Not to sound too dark and fucked up but given Venom wasn't initially intended to be in Spider-Man 3 I think it would've been way cooler if the execs let Sam Raimi go with the original plan of revealing in the final confrontation that Venom had actually eaten Eddie over the course of the film and was puppeteering his skeleton around. It's traditional Sam Raimi horror and really emphasises both how far gone Eddie was -being willing to let the thing eat him if it meant it would kill Peter- and showing how dangerous the symbiote is.

(Yes the original concept would make it more of a parasite than a symbiote but idc it's still a way cooler idea)

I really appreciate how long spiderman 2 sticks to it’s guns with Peter abandoning the hero gig, and the lengths to which he goes to pretend that desire is no longer in him.

He doesn’t stop a violent mugging, turns away from it in fact and lets it play out even if instinctually, he lurches forward at first to help. He doesn’t respond to the police sirens while Otto is on the loose. He pretends he lacks power to help.

And yet when faced with something as dire as a child trapped in a burning building, he doesn’t hesitate. Even with all that power gone he still rushes in, and you see the guilt eat at him when it’s revealed someone else died in the building before they could be reached.

It's getting really frustrating how people keep spreading misinformation about Raimi Spider-Man 4, especially as someone who followed the development in real time back when it was still going to happen, but something I see a lot of now is how the Lizard was going to be the main villain or one of two or three along with the Vulture and maybe Kraven, and that simply isn't true.

It's true that there was an earlier draft of Spider-Man 2 that featured both Doc Ock and the Lizard as villains. It's true that the Lizard was going to appear in Spider-Man 2 video game even after being cut from the film, but was removed possibly bc he was still an option as a future film villain. It's true that Dylan Baker was going to return in Spider-Man 4 as Curt Connors, but he was upfront he was only going to have a supporting role where he helps Peter with science stuff, and you have to remember this is not the era where a major villain would be hidden as some kind of tease where the reveal after the release would be a surprise meant to go viral as hype. And we have known that Spider-Man 4 was supposed to star John Malkovich as the Vulture and either Angelina Jolie or Anne Hathaway as the Vulturess since forever at this point, and after what happened with Spider-Man 3, no way would Raimi do three villains again.

The other thing that I think has since been forgotten is that Sony was never going to let Raimi use the Lizard bc there was this weird clause that the villains could only have human faces, which meant the Lizard was out, even though Raimi was interested in using him eventually, and I remember a lot of frustration when it was announced that the TASM reboot would have the Lizard as the villain bc it was really unfair that Sony basically barred Raimi from using him, only to turn around and renege on that clause for the reboot.

EDIT: This post was written before Dylan Baker revealed and officially confirmed in April 2024 that the Lizard was going to appear in the Spider-Man 4 script Raimi wanted to film before he left the production; prior to that, the idea of the Lizard appearing was fan speculation at best.
