Hot take, I really don’t think we should assign human morals onto animals and call them bad or evil. Fishblr has internalised this idea really well with sharks, and I think that’s good! Sharks don’t deserve all the fearmongering they suffer from in media. But… can we please remember to extend this to other animals too? Even to intelligent animals like dolphins (most commonly bottlenose dolphins) and orcas. It seems to be a counter to pop culture’s tendency to show dolphins as complete angels when they partake in some messed up things, but like…. Dolphins are still animals? They may be able to recognize themselves in mirrors and they may have language and culture and know how to use tools but their intelligence is still on the level of a human child (and how empathetic are those!!??). I see people talk about how evil dolphins are but I never see people talking about other animals the same way, like, why aren’t sea otters and their “evilness” the topic of discussion? :/

hello my love! how exciting! i shall tell you more

last week was my second time seeing the burnt city as i'd gone once before with my school last year. i have been dreaming about it and thinking about it ever since so persuaded my parents to come with me again teehee

the space is two massive warehouses, one representative of troy and the other of greece. the characters include (with some artistic license) the houses of priam and agamemnon and their tales within the myth of the trojan war. beginning in the bar, 'peep', you enter into a museum-style exhibition, where you are given a white mask similar to that of a plague doctor, and shown your specific entryway to the worlds of troy or greece. it's important to note that you are entirely free to move around the space and go through any doorways which open and that there is no specific plotline for you to follow. it's entirely self-created, as, in your wanderings, you find your own narrative and characters to engage with. for example, the first time i went, i didn't know that one of the scenes depicts the sacrifice of iphigenia - instead i interpreted this as an interaction between persephone and hades, with bits of eurydice and orpheus intertwined (my hadestown influence really shows through!).

once you're inside the space, you are free to explore. troy is filled with many small rooms, creating the feeling that you're inside a packed city. the rooms are all incredibly intricately decorated and include a hotel, a bar, and a multitude of shops. it is centrally red/pink. greece, on the other hand, is a much larger space, an open floor with a balcony. the main space is airy but surrounded by a sandy area where sacrifices are carried out and large sheets of canvas which are shaped into the tents of the greek soldiers. in contrast, it is primarily a cool blue.

okay. we've made it into the main playing space. now, we're essentially free to do whatever we want! i like to lose the people i'm with and embrace the anonymity. in this space there is total escapism and weirdly i find it very very relaxing. the most recent time i was there, i began in troy and wandered through there for an hour or so, coming across actors and pieces of action depending on which rooms i walked into. the actors and their characters each have "routes" which they complete whether or not they're being watched. for example when i was in my wanderings i suddenly came across two actors making out in a corridor. but the lovely thing is that the actors, while staying entirely in character, are fully aware that they're being watched in very close proximity, and therefore when i did walk in on these two very attractive men making out against a wall they literally FHSJFJDJ SIDE EYED ME AND THEN CARRIED ON i was like lol. anyway! after some time i finally found greece! after searching for it through many doors which just led me to THE SAME FRIGING CORRIDOR i could have cried. but! in greece i watched the sacrifice of iphigenia and then was watching the sparking of romance between clytemnestra and aegisthus when another actor, playing The Oracle, caught my eye. he beckoned me towards him and took my hands, leading me into a small room in the corner of this bigger space. inside, he locked the door and very gently removed my mask before talking to me personally about the visions he'd been seeing, and dripping water onto my hands which he then wiped away with a bloodstained cloth. i hadn't had a one on one experience when i'd been before and this absolutely made my evening. it makes the experience a whole lot more meaningful when you become personally involved in the narrative. there is very little speech during much of the show as it is primarily physical theatre, so this moment of heavy dialogue became more impactful.

so yea! a fully immersive, highly atmospheric theatre/club experience! it's important to note that the bar is open for the entire show and can be easily accessed whenever you need a break or a drink, and is a place where you can talk, take off your mask, and be entertained by cabaret. it's also important to note that (aside from blood, violence, nudity and other.... adult themes...) the space includes strobe lighting, periods of intense darkness, uneven surfaces, purposeful isolation and a lot of smoke and perfume which are some definite drawbacks. however it is truly one of my favourite spaces to be in and is a place where i feel safe and completely fulfilled. the show is on in woolwich, london until the end of september!!
