Qua'tuli's traditional adult north-east winter clothes when he returned home, around year 217-219 of GA, before recall (timeline is in the work, numbers might change one day). Altuyur is a hot moon, but only in the far north can temperate seasons can happen.
more infos on clothes below
Tumblr media
info chart, I'll expand on some things I've pointed out in the drawing, so make sure to read the notes before reading the text below
The family's folklore animal:
Tumblr media
The northern, puy'ul families always have an animal associated with them, said association is from history that happened with the animal, but the event has nowadays turned into folklore. The stories only being transmitted orally, they slowly diverge and change to be more fantastical. The emblem animal can start off as a regular one but slowly shift into more strange descriptions, eventually ending up as a unique beast. Even if two families have the same emblem animal, the stories will never be the same. The emblem animal will often be a coastal one. On Qua'tuli's clothes, it is found in a bone disk that is hollowed out, then tissue is placed under and attached on the side, and the animal is embroidered in the tissue. They believe that emblem animals will be here after their burial at sea has been done, they think the creature will pick their core at sea and return them to haanu.
Repeated Eye designs:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
each region have a different depiction of haanu, maanul's all-mighty mother. In the north their version of her has plenty of eyes. constantly shifting from place to place like clouds passing in the sky, they slowly reemerge from her face to disappear in the wrinkles of flesh at the end of her snout. this is what haanu's face looks like in the north ->
Tumblr media
a while i dont have an info chart of every version available yet (ill have a separate post for the subject), this is an old sketch but still very accurate! repeated eye patterns are seen as a protection symbol in north regions
Necklace to hide neck:
Tumblr media
Not having clothes isn't inherently seen as sexual, as context matters, although in day-to-day life adults might have certain body parts to hide depending on region. In the north east, adult of both genders will hide their neck, and will also always have their keel hidden even in interiors when wearing lighter clothes. Although they can be shown to their partner in private settings, they're hidden for cultural beliefs.
As i said context matters so showing keel and neck in north east while bathing (they bathe in groups) will not be seen as a lack of decency, as the setting is them simply washing themselves
lucky charm
Tumblr media
a tooth (of an unidentified animal) qua'tuli has found as a little child in the snow, while throwing himself in the powdered snow he just stumbled upon it and has kept it as his lucky charm. He actually has it with him as a recruit (inside a pocket), and when he came home after acquiring his iron talons he kept it on his foot glove.

qua'tuli and yarey'lu laying down in a sleeping room
beds can just be rugs on the floor with many pillows stuffed with juvenile feathers, stuffed mattresses on the floor, weaved sleeping mats, and so on. beds are generally on the floor, if not they could be a carved large hole in the wall to climb into. large family size hammocks are also appreciated, tho family-sized ones look more like a spider web than a typical hammock, a 1 person hammock is more for daily napping than sleeping through the night. Because yes, I've mentioned it once but maanuls and kyhuines typically nap during the hottest time of the day, and altuyur rotational period is 32 hours. within a day multiple solar eclipses happen because of the other gas giant moon (satmuh moon), while to us that is a crazy thing to witness to them, unless they're a little kid that just opened their eyes they do not freak out about it. It only lasts some minutes (apox 10-15 mins maybe)
But back to the sleeping stuff, beds could also have wooden (or other plant fiber material) "hood" that close off the bed from exterior things. A sort of cozy cocoon that i have yet to figure out how to draw properly. The best example to look at are rolluik bureaus, that have that wood door part that slides down to close it (I've got that type of desk lol!). Then again even those beds are not elevated like a typical European one would, beds stay on the floor unless its a hammock (obviously) or an elevated sleeping hole. Forgive me for the shirt art, but i haven't drawn the sleeping stuff yet , this is what id think the hole beds would look like, this one is more of a style like a large family, id think of the edges being really smoothed out
Tumblr media
when sleeping they lightly curl up on themselves, if they have a kid that is small enough they almost wrap around them, closing the circle with their tail and head. since maanuls have a tuff of feathers at the end of their tail they usually cover their face with it, while kyhuines have a smooth tail end it doesn't stoop them from doing similar thing tho that skinny tail tip doesn't hide anything
Tumblr media
i should one day draw real cave art of maanuls and kyhuines sleeping, i think of it as stylized so much that they become stupidly round balls, which is impossible for the to each in real life

northern winter uniform of GA soldiers, explanation on the history behind it under ->
21-06-23 edit:
Tumblr media
Since GA is the first and last war altuyur had, well maanuls and kyhuines didn't know how to even battle properly. Many things related to that age have a sort of clumsy beginning, and so do uniforms. Firstly they used modified versions of the decorative armor that were originally used in theatrical plays, religious performances, and even sports. The modified versions had fewer metal pieces, and no decorations, but were completely inconvenient as they were not thought out for battle. Combined with the crazy temperature recorded in the battlegrounds (mostly in the southern desert) armors were just terrible! a literal oven. So quickly they abandoned the armor to just tissue, but uniforms stand out so much from how their clothing normally looks that looking back at them, it just feels alien to them. lifeless even. an example of an early armored uniform can be found here.
Now back to the northern uniform, when a small part of the north joined the red troupes by believing in their aggressive propaganda campaigns. They then had to make special uniforms for the recruits and soldiers, as in the north there are seasons when the temperatures get quite low. Much like what you have in western/central Europe, which makes the far north of altuyur stand out as the rest is hot with only 2 distinct seasons.
When making the northern winter uniforms they based it on already existing pieces of clothing (in this case basic northern winter hunting clothes with some pieces taken from dancing garments), but striping them off from any decoration, simplifying them to the bare minimum. Moving the ventilation holes to the side of the torso to protect the opperculums more, tho it makes them quite uncomfortable but recruits and soldiers just get used to it. The most "unique" thing about the uniforms is the patch on the arm with the person's name, and yet that piece is easily rippable, in case the owner dies so they can just rip it off and recycle it for new naive recruits that aren't even aware someone died in these clothes before.
They lack any creativity to them, for maanuls as well as a kyhuine these are soulless, as they highly value the art of crafting. There's no passion, no real purpose but a nonsensical war in these uniforms. Nothing to make them truly worthy in their culture. These are just morbid for them to look at during the silver age.
The maanul featured in this drawing is Qua'tuli, which easily translates to "one'whisker". He's a northeast maanul which explains his dark pelt, he has a singular whisker with a mole and is born without tahofahs which is a birth defect and also means he can't smell anything. Like many young influenceable people, he was tricked to join the red troupes thinking it would make him a hero for his people forever, that the war would just last a week, that they'll easily reach kaar'kchir in a week. And that after his service he will be granted special permissions (ex: being able to build his own fisherman's house, building permissions is a law that appeared in GA to force people to join the ranks). Although he started his service in the west as he was living there. When the north joined the war his division was then sent to the north.
here's a silly drawing to show the 3 layers
Tumblr media
Fun fact, Monmartre and Qua'tuli meet as young recruits in the west. Enjoy monmartre that caught a cold.

What are some of the characters favourite foods and why?
qua'tuli likes small fish (the size of an anchovy for example) that has fermented for months in a sealed container, that food is eaten during 1 northern festival, the longest night of winter (only in the far north is winter plausible, altuyur is a hot moon).
Those small fermented fish stink, like a lot. Only people who have been used to it since childhood don't gag at it (northern maanuls in this case) and even then they don't peak out their tahofah around it. it's a small dish to eat for the fun of it, like "it's so nasty! bet I can eat more than you without going sick haha" type.
Qua'tuli only says it's his favorite food because he likes the shocked faces non-northern maanuls do when he reveals it. Around kyhuines it's not so fun to mention as they don't know what it is and aren't aware of the food's reputation. while he does it for the quick giggle, that odd dish reminds him of home and the festivals, which he likes that.
as teenagers, he used to dare mao and lulu to try it once the war was over that he'd show them true northern festivals.
Mao is the teenage nickname of monmartre, lulu the teenage nickname of yarey'lu.
obviously, the war didn't end like they were told it would, and it went on for decades. But as teenagers, they would tell each other things they'd do once their years were done. Which was mostly about sharing each other's culture and visiting one another, sadly that never happened and they all took different paths for better or for worst.

❇️ & 🌌 for one’whisker!
❇️- what is their most prized possession? what do they value?: One'whisker isn't a very material maanul and don't care much about possessing things, but his most prized possession is surely his family heritage! the object can be anything like a flute, or collar and in his case, it's a decorated "dagger" carved from a bone. It is not meant to be used for combat but as an accessory or to hang in the house.
Tumblr media
🌌 - what was the inspiration behind your oc? what was the first thing you decided about them?: His inspo was penguins and magpies! And also I always liked cats with 1 whisker in media, so the first thing I thought while making him is how he'd have dark feathers and a mole with a singular whisker because it felt silly and i liked that

How does momartre's parents look likes :0?? Or anyone else actually!!! I always enjoy seeing this with people's ocs lmao
its dad doesn't even have a name, all there is about them is that they're northern. While its mom does have a name (stüstümali) and got mentioned in dialogues in text I did for practice, she has no importance, literally none
Stüstümali has some art of how id see her, I just think of her with voluminous feathers, she doesn't have anything special except how the feathers on her nose cut shortly instead of fully covering it like other maanuls. Just greyish with blue on the head and the face/nose bleaching a bit with age
Tumblr media
Stüstümali gave her unwanted egg to her sister who was already incubating Morang's egg, Morang and monmartre are raised together by Morang's mother. they see each other as siblings, that's not something odd, since maanuls and kyhuines already consider cousins and siblings to be the same thing. In both languages, there isn't a word for cousin and they will use sister/brother instead
for other characters? I got nothing except brief ideas. Like how for tamtam, kâpone, ôto, and sätmu (they're all from the same litter) I imagined how the mom would have that gene of curly feathers that kâpone partly herited of which is why she can stylize her feathers this way. Or just stuff like how qua'tuli and taptu's father was a great fisherman, nothing more.
Stüstümali, she's just here in the background. She roams around her sister's home and would be more seen as an ""uncle"" than something else, monmartre doesn't even recognize her as its mom even if she is biologically speaking

is there anything that inspired you to create altuyur? or inspirations for just parts of it, like maanul/kyhuine culture or specific characters?
I can't tell if this is intended for faq but since it's in my inbox I'll consider it to not be
Altuyur itself I don't have anything in my head that pops when it comes to what inspired it overall, sure there's spec bio works that made me think I can do that too (expedition by Wayne barlowe) but to say that it inspired what altuyur looks like in my head would be a stretch me
Maanuls and kyhuine are just inspired by my love for birds/dinosaurs, there's bits of pokemon inspiration in there in terms of design. For example latios and latias for kyhuines. Maanuls originated as one character that was heavily inspired by sirene from devil man OVA (not crybaby version, they butchered her) and borzois
Characters in general, I could say that qua'tuli comes from how I like cat design with only 1 whisker (if I'm not wrong a character in wc is like that which is then where he comes from), that alongside mgpies and penguins for his colors, he was the first north east and he wasade before I cared in being consistent and having clear regional variants. And son on with other characters, another fun fact morang and ak'laam used to be one character

Do you have a favourite GA character?
i dont really have one, my favorites change from time to time! i just get focused on writing several characters then switch to another group, so all time favorites are never consistent
