Well, I managed to make myself *start* the Yi City arc empathy flashback in my MDZS reread. I'm not sure I can make myself finish it tho.

When I first watched CQL I looked up mcd spoilers, but I didn't think the Yi City arc would be a thing so I only found out a few episodes before, by accident, that the pretty sword gays I'd fallen in love with on sight were going to have a tragic end. I skipped 36, fast forwarding through, because I'd read a synopsis and couldn't bear that much pain for essentially no reason. When I later read the ExR translation, I skipped it again too.

I finally watched 36 about a year ago (I watched CQL initially 2.5 years ago) when a friend reached that point for the first time. We watched it together while chatting on Discord, and it hurt but I could cope.

But I just read through meeting Xue Yang and I kinda flipped through the rest...I've put off reading more MDZS cause I had reached the empathy stuff and couldn't face it and now that I'm here...I'm again not sure I can face it.

I feel like I oughta actually read it once. It's not like I don't know what happens, I've read synopses of both how it goes in CQL and how it goes in the book. And I did ultimately watch everything. And I just...idk, I'm so tired and stressed and I want to read the book but the Yi City flashback sequence is such an impediment. Watching Xue Yang systematically break Xiao Xingchen is just. Too much for me right now, maybe.

Idk why I typed this all out. It's not like I need permission to skip something I've already skipped before. I think I'm mostly a little disappointed, or maybe frustrated, with myself. I'd intended to read it, but maybe...no.

(I've had to skip a chapter of 2ha and two or three chapters of Qiye too, tho that was specifically cause of one of my main triggers being hit in each, whereas with this it's more...the amount of pain in the arc versus the mental "reward" for reading it are not commensurate.)

I can't stop thinking about Beiyuan and the absolutely unhinged loops of rationalisations this man went on at the end of the novel. He's like:

I'm going to stay to fight (because I've put actual effort into putting my ex-soulmate on the throne and I hate effort), but I'll send my would-be lover away to safety. To ensure that he leaves, I'll kiss him and make him swallow a drug that knocks him out for days, but, get this, in order to avoid him hating me forever for this terrible breach of trust in our relationship, I'll simply sleep with him first AND I'm going to bottom, because, you see, that way he's definitely going to realise I actually love him and didn't just steal his first time and send him away for no good reason.

Okay so I’ve had Word of Honor playing in the background while doing casual work sometimes (there’s some parts I want to rewatch with more attention, but I don’t have time, and I figure if it’s on then when it gets to a part I really want to see I can ignore the casual work for a minute or five and watch). ANYWAY. So I’m on episode 10, right at the “break up” and Wen Kexing spouts out a “can you say you ONLY killed innocent people?!” and Zhou Zishu has some flashbacks and the first time I watched it I was like “oh ~nice~ a random triggering scene I didn’t know would be there” (I trigger to harm to small children) but NO IT’S NOT A RANDOM SCENE IT’S THAT FUCKING SCENE FROM QIYE THAT I DIDN’T KNOW WOULD BE THERE AND ULTIMATELY FORCED ME TO SKIP LIKE A CHAPTER AND A HALF.

The first time I watched I hadn’t read Qiye and I thought it was just like “here’s a random example, what more proof than murdering a kid to demonstrate that some innocents got killed for the greater good” BUT NO IT’S LITERAL FUCKING CANON and now I know the canon it’s referencing and aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.
