The Pursuit of Excellence

In assembly this week, Mrs Skilton spoke about the Ghent Altarpiece (https://visit.gent.be/en/see-do/ghent-altarpiece-supreme-divine-art). This beautiful work of art can be seen in St Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent, Belgium and is considered to be one of the most significant works of art in Europe. It was painted in 1432 and over the last 600 years, its survival has been frequently threatened by war, fire and theft. It has been stolen from the cathedral a few times including by the Nazis, who took it to a salt mine in Austria, where Hitler hid several art treasures intended for the planned Führermuseum. At the end of the war, Hitler ordered the salt mine with all works of art to be blown up but a few heroic miners prevented the destruction and it was then rescued by the Monuments Men and returned to Belgium.

The altarpiece is magnificent and the detail in the painting is incredible. Details that would never have been seen are now apparent, thanks to technology. The link above allows you to zoom in on the work to see things such as the stitching in the clothes or the individual flowers in the garden. The artists would have known that these details would not have been visible to people visiting the Cathedral, but they were aiming for excellence with the expectation that it would be seen by God.

At last term’s Prize Giving, I mentioned one of my favourite quotes (often misattributed to Aristotle), which says that “we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” The painters of the altarpiece, Hubert and Jan van Eyck, were aiming for excellence and knew that this had to be shown in every detail of their artwork.

Mrs Skilton finished with part of the ‘Street Sweeper’ speech by Martin Luther King.

Y’know what makes me sad? Lost potential.

Case in point: the 1940’s Basil Rathbone Holmes films. 20th Century Fox had an excellent start with Hound of the Baskerville’s. (Although the including of the séance, and “Watson, the needle,” were odd.)

Nigel Bruce’s Watson here was not a bumbling buffoon (and I mean this as kindly as I can) and Holmes was polite, humorous, even compassionate. “No, Mrs Barryman, he’s in more merciful hands.”

Adventures was…meh. George Zucco plays a great Moriarty, but this was when they began turning Watson into a bumbler. And Ida Lupino’s role was terrible! She still marries her fiancé even though he did nothing to protect her brother, and threatened to hurt her!

And then the war began and period correct Rathbone Holmes changed over to present day of WWII.

Universal began with The Voice of Terror (loosely based off the last story in His Last Bow, called by the same title, I think) and it was…good. I mean, it’s Holmes fighting against the Nazi’s, that’s pretty nice. And the plot twist with Reginald Denny’s character is neat.

But it lost the charm of the stories and Watson and Holmes’s friendship. Holmes is shown as rude towards Watson’s slowness, interrupts him when he talks, once, in Sherlock Holmes in Washington, he even has him tap his spoon against his plate for no reason except ‘to break up the wavelengths if there was a dictograph’ or whatever it was in the walls.

(There’s a scene in SH Faces Death -once again, loosely based, off The Musgrave Ritual- with a soldier who’s paranoid about bombs being in anything and Watson tossing down an unopened package and telling him to open it INFURIATES me.)

Sherlockians of the ‘40s complained about this, they pointed out that Holmes would never treat Watson so rudely nor would Watson, a former army doctor, be this foolish. And the studio ignored them.

I can’t fully blame Rathbone or Bruce, both were good actors, it was the studio’s boneheaded decision to dampen the mystery and Watson down to comedic relief because of the war.

Just…imagine what we could’ve had.

(Such as Mycroft in one, and on that, why was he not in the ‘40s films? He was the British Government!)

We could’ve had the Irregulars (orphaned children from the war, maybe) a better Lestrade, Gregson was in The Woman in Green, and God bless the writer’s for sparing him from Lestrade’s treatment. Watson being a retired doctor, sure, fought in WWI, okay, I suppose he and Holmes met after the war.

Mrs. Hudson remains unchanged because she’s a sweetheart in everyone, I wish they had more of her.

And Moriarty- the man was in three of them and each time he was different! (One of the films had both men who played him in the same movie, it was very confusing.)

We could’ve had more of 20th Century Fox’s Victorian Holmes, maybe it could’ve gotten better after Adventures. Or Universal could’ve done the nice thing and not reduced Watson to comic relief. Or, Fox could’ve done the ‘40s adaptation, which they could’ve, they were doing Michael Shayne at the time of Voice of Terror and they were fine.

I love Rathbone’s Holmes, he was the only one I knew and grew up on (for a long time all we had was Hound and the Secret Weapon) but I despise what they did to him, to Watson and the stories. I don’t expect much from ‘40s Hollywood but I know they could’ve done better.

Forgive my essay. The lost potential of stuff gnaws at me.

I would like to give you all a lore dump that was supposed to be about Havedas and Verdowyn but spiraled into worldbuilding about two groups of goblins:

Havedas and Verdowyn are mixed race and grew up in a multicultural home (just like me! :D). Their father, Umys, is a green goblin(I swear I’ll come up with a better name soon) whose family came from a series of floating islands that serve as one of the few gateways between the feywild and the prime material plane.

Raising dire chickens for companionship, warfare, and showmanship is a major part of the green goblin's culture, though some also raise dire chickens for food.

These goblins are also slightly fey-touched due to constant exposure to feywild gates, and both Havedas and Verdowyn inherit a teeny tiny bit of this fey fuckery, but it only manifests in the siblings' uncanny ability to go completely unnoticed even in situations where it wouldn't make a lick of sense.

Their mother, Valowick, is a grey/Palitian goblin from the mountains that hug the north end of the Palitian forest (which is where Dunhallow is! though that city takes up the south and west end of the forest). Their culture is heavily influenced by both the neighboring Dwarven strongholds and the dark elves that travel from the underdark.

They are known for extensive cities built in massive cave systems, with their most famous being Tian-Tor, which is known both as the safest way to travel from the underdark to the surface, and for some absolutely gnarly mushroom wine. Most of the stories Havedas knows are from his mother's culture.

I haven't done much coding lately, but I decided to look at my solution for the narcissistic number challenge I did back when I was still regularly doing coding challenges on codewars. And I was a little distressed at how messy it was (the function called "narcissistic"), but then I was a little smug when I managed to do the whole thing more succinctly and without using unnecessary steps/list creating (the function called "narc_2").

#self indulgent stuff #the little code I do still write is still usually spaghetti code but eh #it's functional so!#like I have been trying to re-fresh my time series knowledge #and I've created a function for weighted and unweighted moving averages #where I can even choose which 'scale' of moving average I wanna use!#and the code looks messy but it spares having to use a calculator #(or worse - excel.)#(there's probably a built in function for that in a r package #but I will take any opportunity to combine coding practice with other pursuits!)#(not to the extent where I create the functions in R and not just Python #at least for the time being #but still!)
