hey queer nd teen here i've been really interested in punk culture and the message drives me to tears but i'm scared of being called a poser because i feel like a coward

i hate cops and i think they should fucking die and the government is fucked and we have to look after each other. but i feel backed into a corner because i'm surrounded by family who would laugh at me and just wouldn't understand and i don't feel like i can Handle it but i Want to

as a shy and nonconfrontational teen with a shit ton of anxiety to boot i dunno. i admire brave hardcore punks who beat up cops and nazis but i Can't Be That

When I was a teen, I was told by my best friend that I could never be a punk. That I would never be a punk. But here I am. I was a shy quiet kid, and I’m still pretty quiet and prefer to avoid confrontations when I can. My point is, these things don’t prevent people from being a punk if its in their nature

Not all punks are the big tough punks who can physically fight those fights. Though they are a very important part of our community. But we also have plenty of disabled, neurodivergent, and chronically ill people who are just as punk, and even people who are just not into violence. They are advocates, they are researchers, they are community care takers. Being a punk isnt all about fighting evil. I actually think thats not the best way to look at it at all. Being punk is about caring for your community. And while ‘fighting evil’ is a part of it, there are a lot more things that entails.

If you truly want to be a punk, it seems like you are already going down the right path. You alluded to a not so great home life where it might not be the best idea to dress in alternative styles. You could always start with smaller, more subtle things. Or you can just wait until you can move out to start exploring that. Remember, being punk is more than just an aesthetic, and while the aesthetic may look cool, it is by no means a requirement to be a punk (honestly half the time I run around it cowboy boots and a flannel - in the winter I usually add the hat too)

You are a teen still. Growing and learning about yourself and the world around you. And so are your peers. Any teen who calls you a poser is being a jerk and doesn’t know all that much about the scene. Any grown adult that calls you a poser is probably a poser themselves who refuses to acknowledge that not every person comes from the same background. But I also feel like it’s important to tell you that what anyone else says shouldnt matter that much. Even if it feels like it does, if you let their words matter to you, you are giving them all the control.

Its okay to be young and not know a lot. Its okay to not dress alternative for any number of reasons. Its okay to not feel like you could go off and fight bad people. None of those things make you a poser.

PUNKS PLS HELP

Hi! Im kind of a puppy punk (i hope people actually use that term lmao), and im having trouble finding punk music. I've already got a pretty good amount of riot girl (the genre, not the band) on my playlist but i want to diversify it! Im just really frustrated, because every time i try to find more punk bands they're either pop punk, not punk AT ALL, or just not really my style. If the punk community on tumblr could give me some band/song recommendations I'd really appreciate it! I won't be too picky, but if you want specifics, im looking especially for anti-cop, anti-capitalist, anti-nazi, pro-queer, pro-jew, pro-cripple bands/songs. (I chose red thread so I could see it easier since it’s my first time)

this sock had a GIANT hole in it (from washing I think). like. the thing was hanging on by a couple THREADS & I managed to (badly) sew it back together

it might look atrocious INITIALLY, buuuuuuut…..

…when styled normally, you can’t even tell which one is mended ^___^ so I call it a win. especially for someone who’s never ever picked up a needle in their life before this 😭

Any good tips for any baby punks out there? I'm new to the scene and need some advice. Any advice for diy's/ideology/music/ect?

Hi!! Sorry its taken me so long to get to this, I’ve traveled about 1300 miles (aprox 2093 km) in the last 2 weeks

Tips for baby/puppy punks!! Yes! I have a lot of those, but I’ll summarize into the important ones:

The absolute most important thing I can tell you is to develop critical thinking skills (if you don’t already have them). Dont just hop on a bandwagon because all the other punks are doing it. Take the time to learn and form your own opinions on something

The second most important thing I can tell you is to always take advice/criticism with a grain of salt (this applies to things outside of alternative sub cultures as well). People will tell you things. Sometimes they are lying or dont know any better. Sometimes their advice will work for one person but not another. For example, a lot of people say if you dont dress the part, you arent punk. However, sometimes it takes a while to build up an alternative closet. Sometimes people live in an area where it may not be safe to wear their opinions on their sleeves (especially minors). Sometimes people just like the color pink and thats *fine*. This mindset can be applied to literally everything. Just do what works for you

That leads nicely into my 3rd point, you dont have to dress or look a certain way OR listen to certain bands to be punk. Anyone who says otherwise is a poser. That being said, it’s generally accepted that you shouldnt wear shirts or patches for bands you’ve never even heard of (no one can stop you but you might be labeled a poser)

Advice specifically for diy: watch videos, if you want to learn how to make a specific thing there is 100% a video somewhere on it. Also, ask people. If someone has something really cool and you want to learn how they made it, go talk to them (assuming its not some dark alley). Some materials you might want to start collecting are can tabs, bottle caps, and safety pins

Music advice that I will die by: You dont have to listen to punk music to be punk. Sure, its an important part of the subculture, but not the only part. Its more important to learn about punk values than headbang until your neck snaps

and remember kids: if there is anyone in your life who is a mandatory reporter (eg a teacher, sport coach, medical professional, etc), never, and I mean never, tell them about illegal shit you've done, even if its a joke or reference. like sure make a joke like "oh if this happens I'm going to commit crimes" (like if your reading a book and a character dies), but never go up and openly say "oh yeah I graffitied this really cool flower the other day"

what I like (not specifically punk bands but I like their sound): Radiohead (my favourite band ever), nirvana, the cure, dream nails, crass, currls (they're so underrated), UK waste, a bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees, the smiths, deftones, T.S.O.L, Fleetwood Mac, zounds

I want to find more punk music I like (fan of crass, t.s.o.l and dream nails) but I don't really enjoy music that's super heavy and screams a lot - a couple here and there absolutely!!! go for it!!!! but if it's just nonstop Noise it's not really my thing. so if you know any bands with music like this I'd love to give them a listen!! if you're in doubt, just give it to me anyway I'm open to having my mind changed!!!!
