#PHnews: Esperon denies 'creative ways' accusation of Red groups

MANILA – National Security Adviser (NSA) Hermogenes Esperon, Jr., on Wednesday denied claims that government security troops are using "creative ways" in detaining individuals allegedly red-tagged by the government.

The "creative ways" reportedly include the filing of false charges like homicide and illegal possession of firearms and reportedly being done to offset the repeal of the Anti-Subversion Law of 1957 or Republic Act 1700 which was repealed in 1992.

"Ano namang creative ways eh talaga namang nangyayari yan dahil miyembro sila ng armandong grupo dahil sila gusto nilang pataubin ang ating gobyerno sa pamamagitan ng armed struggle (What creative ways are they saying? Such incidents are really happening because they are members of the armed group and they want to topple our government via armed struggle)," Esperon said when asked to comment during a "Laging Handa" briefing at PTV-4.

Being part of an armed struggle against the government, he said, means members of these groups are known to carry weapons that are often found in their underground safehouses when discovered and caught by authorities.

"Doon sila talaga nakikita, ayon yung nagiging ebidensya sa kanila na kasama sila sa violent overthrow ng Republika ng Pilipinas (Those are seen there and used as evidence against them for their role or part in violent overthrow of the Republic of the Philippines)," he said.

Also, during the course of operations aimed at neutralizing communist terrorists, such weapons and other equipment, including laptops, are seized by government forces.

He added that these captured laptops, when checked, often revealed the extent of the involvement of their owners to the armed struggle or armed revolution being espoused by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) and its allies and aimed at the overthrow of the existing government.

"Wala tayong ginagawa na sinasabi nilang planting of evidences, yung mga nakukuha sa kanila ay talaga kanila yun at malimit naman ay sa engkwentro nakukuha yan. Kung ano talagang makuha sa engkwentro, ayon yung ebidensya natin (We do not plant evidence as they claim, all items seized from their possessions are recovered during encounters with them. What was captured or taken during encounters are our evidence against them)," he said.

Republic Act 1700 outlawed the Communist Party of the Philippines of 1930 (Partido Komunista ng Pilipinas-1930), the Hukbalahap, and organizations succeeding them, including the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDF) and the New People's Army (NPA) on the grounds that these groups are involved in a "conspiracy to overthrow the government and imposed a totalitarian regime".

It also prohibited association with these groups. It was repealed by then President Fidel V. Ramos in 1992 through Republic Act 7636.

Esperon said the red-tagging did not come from the government, adding that it was CPP founder Jose Maria "Joma" Sison, in a video clip, who identified progressive groups allied to the communist terrorists.

In the same video clip, Sison identified the Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Gabriela, League of Filipino Students, Bayan, Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, Kilusang Mayo Uno, and many others as his allies in the so-called "National Democratic Revolution", he said.

"Kaya siya mismo, kung may masasabi tayong-red tagging, siya mismo ang nag-red-tag (It is Sison himself who red-tagged his companions, if others are saying that we are the ones red-tagging, it is Sison himself who did that," Esperon said.

The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.

"Sa totoo lang, tama yung sinabi ng Pangulo na ini-inform natin ang public. We are informing, we are identifying them and that was for the information ng public para hindi mapasubo ang kabataan na sumama sa kanila (What the President said about informing the public about them is right. Week 1 Tutorial - Alphabet in my pocket

Coming out of the longest summer holiday of my life, I’d completely forgotten what life as a student was like. To ensure my first day as a uni student went smoothly, I had meticulously planned the day in advance.

Monday 2nd March.

My alarm was set to wake me up at 8:30am. My outfit, already picked out from the day before, hung on my bedroom door. I was to brush my teeth, shower, do my hair, and get dressed before 9:00am. I was to be out the door by 9:30am to begin a 1.5 hour commute into the city, which would result in me arriving half an hour early - leaving time in case PTV decided to act up that day. Fortunately, everything went to plan, and I was standing at the foot of RMIT’s School of Media and Communication by 11:00am. Each step up the stairs was increasingly more nerve wracking than the last. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, my eyes immediately started darting around, desperate to find a familiar face. There were none. I spent the next half hour looking around and placing bets in my head on who I thought would be in my class. Then when the time arrived, I watched as each person shuffled into their respective studios. Needless to say, stepping into my first class was extremely daunting. However, my fear would soon dissipate upon meeting my peers who all confessed to having the same sense of trepidation that I had. We introduced ourselves and quickly became acquainted with one another.

Class began and started off doing the cornerstone activity of university: icebreakers, more specifically, two truths and a lie. I went first, but being the terrible liar that I am, I was quickly exposed as a fraud who tried to pass as a quadrilingual. This activity taught me that I was the youngest at my table, and there were many well-established people in the course back in uni working to obtain a second degree!

Soon following the icebreakers we were introduced to our first prompt. We were to create our names using only the items we had on hand. This caught me extremely off guard as I packed extremely lightly thinking that all we’d need for a design course was our laptop and some pencils, so I was limited to only using the things in my pencil case, and in my pockets. However, being an exercise in creative thinking, the task was successful in making me think more like a designer in realising that everyday objects are shapes that can be contorted and combined to create various recognizable letterforms.

Ly, C. (2020). My name with items on me Upon finishing the first prompt, we were tasked to pool all our objects with the people on our table to create the whole alphabet. Whilst challenging, with lots of teamwork and creativity, my table was able to complete the task. I came to be quite surprised as to how some objects were much more versatile than what my initial impressions of them made them out to be. Cables could be twisted and tied down to create curves, and the rigid nature of some objects made them ideal candidates for creating angular letters.

Ly, C. (2020). My groups combined attempt at an alphabet This was hard to photograph. I had to combine a few images at different angles to be able to fit everything in. You can still see artifacts of my blotchy editing at the bottom edge of the table. The first week of uni was jam-packed full of meeting new people and already had me constantly thinking outside of the box. If the weeks were to continue on like this, I will no doubt enjoy my time as a design student.

Honestly depends on what you need and what phone you have though, since different phones have different apps already installed. For my old HTC I had to download an app for making lists and notes, as well as Any.do, but after changing to Apple I don’t need those since the phone has notes and reminders.
