Entry 5: Virtual and Augmented Reality
Introduction
During this series of entries, I will be analysing five different topics in relation to the Digital Sport and Digital Media industry. This fifth and final entry will look at virtual and augmented reality and what role they play in the modern sporting industry.
Summary
Virtual and augmented realities are both modifications for a users sporting experience. The main difference between the pair is with virtual reality, you enter a fake (‘virtual’) simulated place to experience an event whereas, with augmented reality, modifications are made to the real world to create a more in-depth experience (LASource, 2020).

The impact it’s having on the sports industry
The implementation and use of augmented and virtual reality have had a majorly positive impact on the sports industry. When it comes to VR, the use has been great when referring to important games based such decisions such as tennis’ hawkeye, soccer’s VAR system and crickets’ DRS all through the use of strategically placed cameras (Echo3D, 2020). AR is also helping with the broadcasting of sports as producers can put images or graphics on screens to enhance a viewers experience for those at home (Laurie Ainley, 2019)

The opportunities it is creating
Augmented reality in sport has created many different sporting opportunities including training for its athletes. In order to train either to avoid injury or to avoid inclement weather, athletes can use augmented reality to experience different sporting tasks such as hitting a golf ball, throwing a punch in boxing or throwing a football in American Football (Jan Kees Mons, 2020).

Challenges it is causing
A challenge associated with the sports industry when it comes to the use of augmented and virtual reality in the sports industry is that if it creates such a good at-home experience for the consumer, ticket sales and attendances at sporting games may slowly decline over time which could be a detriment to the league (Echo3D, 2020). It is a tight line to walk through as, in order to keep the fans coming to events and games, the league needs to keep the sport’s fresh and viewable (Smith & Stewart, 2015).

Current Issues
A current issue surrounding the use of VR and AR is the associated costs and the equipment that is needed. Having no knowledge of VR myself, an Oculus Quest 2 with 128GB which features a VR headset would cost $479 (Amazon, 2021). For a person with a handy disposable income, this price may be able to be accommodated but for the average sporting viewer, this is a ludicrous price. Leagues such as the AFL, NRL and A-League will have to be very careful if they are to invest as VR headset sales only passed 200,000 in 2016 (ZDnet, 2017)
Closing Thoughts
In closing, virtual and augmented reality both play a fairly important role in the modern-day sporting landscape. Although the negative associations, in particular, the costing of equipment and infrastructure are strong, there is indeed benefits to the use of virtual and augmented reality within the sporting industry.

The Memorable Bar Cart
BAR CARTS are social pieces we should all have in our homes. Unless of course, we live in a 5-bedroom, tri-level, three-car garage, with marble floors, and a double staircase-A wet bar should be built in.
What makes these furnishings so special is that we can make them stand out. Adding personalized touches to our home spaces is what interior design is all about. There’s a little bit of a designer in all of us! Bar carts come in different styles for glam spaces, masculine rooms, and modern style lofts.
For your bar cart to be a functioning piece, you must have these items:
1. Essential Glassware: If you are anything like me, you hate wine glasses with short stems. Keep in mind, every part of your bar cart reflects your style. Your drinkware is vital, because not only do you want your cart to be welcoming, but you also want those glasses to make a statement! There are different glasses for different cocktails.
