Wyoming recently became the first US state to ban abortion pills after its governor, the Honorable Mark Gordon, signed the measure into law. The Wyoming legislature had previously passed a bill that makes it illegal to “prescribe, dispense, distribute, sell or use any drug for the purpose of procuring or performing an abortion". The governor noted that he had engaged in extensive prayer before signing the law. Its violation is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a US$9,000 fine. The new law will come into effect on July 1, 2023.

One of the ways society pushes women towards abortions is by instilling the fear in us that our children won't have the best quality of life for any number of reasons such as a disability, economic misfortune, etc. Society tells us that oir children are better off dead then to live in this world. Let me tell you this: that is a lie. Look around at this world. I'll bet that a majority of the people of we know don't have the best possible quality of life. We all have our certain struggles whether we keep them hidden or not. Life is not easy and there are struggles, but these struggles are no reason to deny a human being's right to be born, to live, to experience. Each human being has a purpose in life. A person's purpose does not change based on their quality of life. Quality of life can be overcome - but only if all human beings from the moment of conception were given the chance. This is NOT a repost: just my late night/early morning brain that doesn’t sleep....

Which is worse: a sudden and unexpected death, or a prolonged suffering then death...?

It continues to frustrate and break my heart that the concept of “life” is so politicized...

Unjust death, unexpected death, senseless death or undignified death is all still death.

Various sufferings, are all still suffering.

One is never easier to walk through than the other. One is never more significant than the other. It is hard to imagine a God (or Ultimate Being or insert your term) that sees all life as life; and that loves and mourns the sinner just as much as the saint. Whether it is a baby in the womb, a black man on the road, an immigrant fleeing danger, or an officer protecting society, speaking for one shouldn’t necessitate or equate a denouncement of the other. Sometimes I think God weeps more from the destruction and “death” we cause in our misguided attempts to stand up for “life” or “justice” or “freedom”.

I have wept over the death of a loved one who walked the long suffering road of terminal illness, I had grieved loss while listening to the heartbreaking “final radio call” of a beloved blue life in my family, I have journeyed through the unspeakable destruction and indescribable pain that can be caused by a the effects of a broken system on minority or lower income families and the situations that are formed because of it, and I have cried with too many friends at the unbearably devastating loss of an unborn precious baby.

It is so easy to speak of each of these scenarios as generic causes to justify our harsh criticisms of “opposing” views.

But if you don’t intimately understand the value of each of these LIFE issues, (not in a ranking order but as equal though different experiences of heartbreak and loss), then please give thanks, as you most likely haven’t “walked in those shoes”.

If every family and interaction in relationships of people only saw things as, it’s EITHER my cause OR your cause, but it can’t be both...how much more broken would our world be...? Speak for your cause and stand by your beliefs; please just remember that we have probably veered off track when these causes become more important than the people and lives who may not agree with them...When our need to speak becomes more important than our willingness to listen.

I truly wonder what the world would be like if we fought even half as hard for daily lived compassion and unity as we do for overarching ideals that prompt judgement, defensiveness and division.

This isn’t a popular place to stand. But I do believe it’s the stance I am called to. Some would say it is a “Catholic” one and some would say it’s NOT even a “Christian” one. But actually, for me it’s mostly the “human” one.

I write all of this as a much needed reminder to myself. Prayers for all who are walking through difficulties, illness, suffering, oppression, or loss in this time. Prayers for all men and women who give their lives as daily sacrifices (of themselves and their families) to protect our freedoms, even when it isn’t appreciated. Prayers for the millions of babies who never had a chance to make a difference in this world, intentional or not, and prayers for their grieving mothers, including any women who had no hope, no options, no support and in a difficult time only encountered voices of judgement from complete strangers telling them what is best for their life and their body. Our individual stances will never get better if we don’t see their connection to the others.

Arguments Against Abortion

Size: The unborn is smaller than a born human, yes. But, a four year-old is smaller than a fourteen year-old. Can we kill them because they’re not as big as a teenager? No, because a human being’s value is not based on their size. They’re still equally a person even though she differs in that characteristic. In the same way, the unborn is smaller than a four year-old. If we can’t kill the four-year old because they’re smaller, then we can’t kill the unborn because they’re smaller either.

Level of Development: The unborn is also less developed than a born human being. How does this fact, though, disqualify the unborn from being a person? A four year-old girl can’t bear children because her reproductive system is less developed than a fourteen year-old girl. Yet, she is still as equally valuable as a child-bearing teen. The unborn is also less developed than the four year-old. Therefore, we can’t disqualify them from personhood for the same reason we can’t disqualify the four year-old. Both are merely less developed than older human beings.

Environment:  The unborn is located in a different environment than a born human. How does your location, though, affect your value? Can changing your environment alter your status as a person? Where you are has no bearing on who you are. An astronaut who spacewalks in orbit is in a radically different environment than a person on the planet. No one could reasonably deny his personhood simply because he’s in a different location. Scuba divers who swim under water and spelunkers who crawl through caves are equally as valuable as humans who ride in hot-air balloons. If changing your environment can’t change your fundamental status, then being inside or outside a uterus can’t be relevant either. How could a 7-inch journey through the birth canal magically transform a value-less human into a valuable person? Nothing has changed except their location.

Degree of Dependency: The unborn is dependent upon the mother’s body for nutrition and a proper environment. It’s hard to see, though, how depending upon another person disqualifies you from being a person. Newborns and toddlers still depend upon their parents to provide nutrition and a safe environment. Indeed, some third-world countries require children to be breast fed because formula is not available. Can a mother kill her newborn son because he depends on her body for nutrition? Or, imagine you alone witnessed a toddler fall into a swimming pool. Would you be justified in declaring him not valuable simply because he depended on you for his survival? Of course not! Since the unborn depends on his mother in the same way, it’s not reasonable to disqualify his value either.

Scientific proof that life begins at conception:

"Development of the embryo begins at Stage 1 when a sperm fertilizes an oocyte and together they form a zygote." [England, Marjorie A. Life Before Birth. 2nd ed. England: Mosby-Wolfe, 1996, p.31] "Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization (conception).” “This fertilized ovum, known as a zygote, is a large diploid cell that is the beginning, or primordium, of a human being." The cardiovascular system is the first major system to function. At about 22 days after conception the child's heart begins to circulate his own blood, unique to that of his mother's, and his heartbeat can be detected on ultrasound.

At just six weeks, the child's eyes and eyelids, nose, mouth, and tongue have formed.

Electrical brain activity can be detected at six or seven weeks, and by the end of the eighth week, the child, now known scientifically as a "fetus," has developed all of his organs and bodily structures.

By ten weeks after conception the child can make bodily movements.
