Summary: Sometimes it seems like the past won't leave TK alone no matter far away from it he gets. When a night out for the 126 leads to an unfortunate encounter for TK; Carlos comes to the rescue.

It has been a while since TK has been out with the rest of the 126 without Carlos being there. Even longer since he’s been out at a gay bar, but they wanted to get out and they’re all in need of a place to feel safe after a week of tough calls, including having to deal with several racist, homophobic assholes. TK loves the home he’s found in Texas, but he still struggles with how different it can be from New York in some ways.

They’ve chosen one of the quieter bars; with music loud enough to enjoy, but not drown out conversation, and tables with chairs comfortable enough to sit in for a few hours. TK is content to settle into a chair and decline Nancy’s attempts at pulling him out to the modest dance floor. His muscles are still screaming at him for the more fire than medic rescue he pulled off a few days ago. Judd teased him relentlessly for going soft on them when he complained the day after, so he’s kept his mouth shut since.

Paul drops several drinks on the table, and then takes a seat next to TK soon after the others have left for the dance floor.

“That didn’t take long,” the fond laugh that accompanies the words makes it clear that Paul’s not upset with being stuck ‘babysitting’ the drinks at the table.

TK laughs as he glances over at him from where he was texting Carlos. His fiancé is apparently using his slow shift to his advantage to catch up on paperwork in the office and check-in on his friends at the bar.

“Nancy wanted to let off some steam and Mateo’s not going to say no to that.”

TK sighs as he watches Mateo lean in a little closer to Nancy, a move he’s made on Carlos a number of times when they go out, and the thought makes him miss his man a little more.

“I’m surprised Marjan is risking her sanity being that close to the happy couple on the dance floor right now though.”

“Nah man, she’s been out with you and Carlos enough times to know when it’s time to run and they’re not even close yet.” Paul comments drily as he takes a sip of his beer.

TK narrowly manages to keep the sip of cranberry soda from shooting out across the table, but at the cost of swallowing some down the wrong tube. Paul’s deep laugh and the feeling of his hand patting firmly on TK’s back causes a rush of heat to flush from TK’s chest up his neck.

Here's what I'm consumed with today. How much Carlos lost absolutely everything when he and TK broke up because everything good in his life is connected in some way to TK. He temporarily lost the person he loves but he lost so much more than that. Carlos has to live alone in the place that was supposed to be their home. He found a second father in Owen, who was there for him before his own father was, and that would've been gone after TK was gone. Carlos has a better relationship with his parents because of TK. He needed to hear them both say they're proud of him so much and he needed it for years and he finally got it from them both in connection to something that happened with TK, and now he has to distance himself from them because he has to lie to them about TK breaking up with him. Carlos probably liked his job better because there was always the chance he might run into TK, and now that's become something he dreads. All of his friends were TK's friends first, and Nancy keeps inviting him to hang with them because she's kind but how long realistically would she have kept asking when she knew he was gonna say no? Carlos needed community so badly and he got it because of TK and now that's gone. He gets Grace as a friend because of TK. He gets Paul, another queer person, as a friend because of TK. He gets to indulge in his love of cooking and feeding people because of TK, he would have started to resent cooking after TK was gone because there was no one for him to cook for. Literally everything good Carlos had in his life was connected in some way to TK and it's just all gone after they break up and I get so damn heartbroken thinking about how truly alone this soft man was.

i feel like we’re all focusing a lot on carlos being done dirty by the writers (which he definitely was. he’s my babygirl there’s no way he would have done this shit) but tk was also done dirty. he’s grown so very much in these three years, and you’re telling me that this is all he gets?? a three seconds long breakdown?

tk used to walk out on confrontations, shut down completely, but he’s grown so much and it shows when he stays in the room, he doesn’t walk out on carlos telling him he’s been married for years. but then what? i feel like there’s a whole side of that we haven’t seen. tk had a right to be mad. growing doesn’t mean not ever getting mad, it means learning to have a conversation and talk things through. and tk didn’t get this. they just had him ask a couple of questions and then it all went away, like nothing ever happened. there’s a whole season on why keeping secrets and walking out on confrontations is poison for a relationship, and now that tk has grown to learn all this, he doesn’t even get to have a confrontation. it just all ends there.

i think the writers really did them both dirty with this plotline. i know my babies carlos and tk would never act like this

Chapter 02

TK woke up in a hospital room, in a silence broken only by the machines controlling his body. Carlos was sitting next to him, his healthy hand in his, kissing and caressing his. Next to him was Andrea, rosary in hand, praying softly, while Owen had sat on the other side of the bed and was staring out the window, stroking hs arm.

TK rolled over in bed but protested as he felt the intense pain in too many parts of his body. He squeezed his eyes shut, looking for a position that would be more comfortable and not make him want to cry and finally his brain decided to wake up and allowed him to open his eyes.

No one said anything at first, they had been told to give him time. The shock was severe enough that he was groggy at first.

So they waited.

"Carlos..."

"Ty, my boy..." Carlos walked over to the bed and smiled.

"What... those people... the ones who... me..." TK tried to stir again and that brought back the pain in his abdomen and made his insides burn with the senesation that incandescent irons were being thrust into him. "Hmmm Carlos... dad... It hurts so much."

"I know, son, that's why you need to stay calm and move as little as possible." Owen told him. "I'm going to let the doctors know you're awake in case they want to..."

"No please...Dad, don't try...please. I want to sleep."

"Ty, babe, we need you to stay awake a little longer. The doctors want to run a couple of tests on you and then you can sleep again, I promise." Carlos told him, sat on the edge of the bed and stroked his boyfriend's cheek. "Besides, your eyes are too pretty and I missed them."

TK loved it when Carlos got cheesy and said those tacky things. He smiled and and made an effort not to laugh, because he knew the pain would come later. But Carlos got his point across and just for that alone he stared at him.

"That's..."

"Carlos... it hurts..."

"I know, my love, that's why we asked also doctors to put you on an adequate dose of painkillers enough to make you feel good but not pose any problem."

TK trusted his life to Carlos with his eyes closed, so as much as the thought of being on any kind of drugs or substances, no matter how much they would take away his pain, scared him, he knew Carlos would do anything to help him

"Is there anything you need mijo." Andrea asked him and TK shook his head. He just wanted to sleep and forget and since the latter wasn't possible, sleep would be enough.

But Owen called his doctor and three people came into the room. Too many people, he didn't like it, it made him suddenly uncomfortable when there were so many people around him, especially when they were strangers.

He opened his mouth — bad idea when you are underwater — and his throat, his lungs, his whole body was drowned by the liquid that was pulling him from outside. All around him was water and silence. Cold and water. Loneliness and death... Carlos knew that if he didn't get out of the water, it wouldn't be long before he was dead, but the uniform weighing down his body was making things almost impossible, the tiredness from the minutes he had been fighting... Or maybe it had only been seconds.

He had never done the test to find out how long he could hold his breath underwater, without breathing... holding his breath. But he had stopped doing that, he had stopped holding it and the water was rushing through his body, searing his veins. It was also burning his muscles and his brain was about to explode.

He could barely think anymore and felt himself falling, sinking, being pulled down, or was it up because he was dying and his body was about to surface.

They would find him like this, swollen from the water inside his body, pale, perhaps disfigured. Maybe there were fish or flesh-eating creatures in the water and then TK... no... no... TK would have to identify his fish-eaten body. He couldn't put him through something like that.

Not to TK, not to his parents, not to anyone who cared about him.

He had to fight for all of them, because he had already pulled the woman out of the water, now it was his turn, he had to get out of the water, resist and fight... It hurt but he had to fight. If only because if he died, he knew that TK would too.

No matter the reason, getting out of the water and surviving was the most important thing now. When he got to land he would worry about what would happen next.

He kicked in the water as hard as he could, though he barely moved and maybe that was why, because he wasn't moving and was only going down...always down, to the bottom of the lake where he would be lost forever.

"TK..." he thought in one of his last breaths. "I'm trying... I promise I'm trying, I'm fighting to get back to you, but I can't. I'm tired, I can't take it anymore… I want to get out, I know I'll die if I don't, I know you'll die if I don't and that's why I keep kicking, but I know it's too much."

When his hand suddenly touched the surface, he clutched his fingernails to the earth beneath him. He hurt himself but pulled his other hand out of the water and dug his other nails into the earth as well.

He pulled his body. He was exhausted, and literally couldn't breathe, but he kept pulling until half his body was out. No, he couldn't breathe, he couldn't get any air into his lungs, and when he breathed in nothing happened.

His body fell forward, he could still feel the water on his legs; if he wasn't careful the water would take him in again, but he had used his last bit of strength to get there, so that someone would see him before it was too late.

"TK..." he muttered as everything went black, and death quickly took over his being.

"Has anyone seen Carlos?" Mitchell asked, walking through the wreckage of the multiple accident.

Five cars and two trucks had been involved because of the slippery ground in the middle of an ice-covered road. They had skidded all over the place, one of the cars had fallen down a slope and had come very close to a lake. The two trucks had collided causing a fire that the 126 was taking care of while Tommy's ambulance and crew were tending to the injured, waiting for more ambulances to arrive.

Mitchell and Carlos had been among the first to arrive. They had taken two of the drivers of the cars to safety and had split up to help with the other vehicles involved in the accident, but it had been a while since they had seen each other.

She had tried to call him on the radio, but Carlos had not answered. With all the craziness they were in the middle of, they hadn't had a chance to see each other again and now she was worried about him.

"TK," she called out to him as she saw them close the ambulance door and get ready to leave. "I don't want to worry you and I'm sure it's silly but I haven't been able to reach Reyes… Carlos. Have you talked to him?"

"Um, no. Now that you mention it I've been so busy with stitches and bandages that I didn't realize we haven't talked. Why?"

"I don't know, I have a...weird feeling and Carlos always answers my radio messages. But today... This will be silly, I know, but it's been a while since he last answered me."

"Hold on, I'm going to call him," TK said.

On the video, you could see your mother in-law walking beside your little girl, modelling a new dress while Clara showed off a new pair of sandals, "show mama and papa, cariño! You look so beautiful, Clara!", you could hear Carlos Sr's voice.

"Look, Piñón is not having it at all!", you pointed at the screen, seeing your four pawed friend sitting on the dog bed looking very unamused.

"There's also another one - if I didn't know better, it would look like my mother had just discovered you can send videos!", Carlos chucked before tapping another one.

You could see Carlos Sr tell Clara how he was driving the car, "that was the first time I won a rally, Clarita", he smiled as the little girl seemed to be obsessed with what she was watching.

"Can we do that sometime? Just me and you?", Clara asked and you swore your father in-law's eyes shined a little brighter.

"We'll need a carseat for you, and some more protection, but sure, mi amor!", he beamed.

"We'll have to see how Y/N and Carlos feel about it", Reyes said, flipping the camera to show her face, "enjoy your rest, dears!".
