My #1 post of 2022
I always had a suspicion that that scene with the knife would be after Aemond gets hurt because, damn, in Alicent’s place I might’ve snapped too. Like, even all the other baggage they’ve got aside, your kid just gets stabbed and permanently disabled by one of the multiple other kids who ganged up on him in a 4-on-1 fight (two of whom had already been involved in lowkey bullying him before), and your husband, your hurt child’s father, seems far more concerned what mean things your hurt child had said to “provoke” being stabbed. (The things happened to be mean but also true.) Then, the brat’s mother says your already seriously injured child should be tortured until he confesses where he heard the mean-but-true things he said. And while that doesn’t happen, literally no one is punished for your child being beaten and stabbed for no fucking reason other than saying some mean things. I mean, come on...

people who comments 'oh i wish op would include this or that in this gifset' or 'it's a shame gifset ends here, there's some interesting stuff right after that' or something like it. you never made a gifset yourself huh. it's not as simple sometimes. sometimes there's not enough frames for a one gif it will look choppy and weird, you have to either cut it off or add it to another shot, if you really want to include it. and even tho now you can make a set that is more than 10 gifs you also don't want to make it to too long and look endless. you also need to maintain some sort of harmony (at least for me it's very important, i am a very visual person)
and with all that you also need to stay under 10Mb per gif. and while that is a huge number and ridiculous compare to times when i started making gifs here and it was 500kb... sometimes even that is not enough (especially the bigger gifs are) so you have to make decisions to not include something or at least not in full length
gifmaking takes a lot of time and pretty gifs believe it or not takes also some skill. and btw no one pays us gifmaker for it, we just take time of our life to make things and post it here. and also no one freaking reblog anything anymore which makes it for us gifmakers extremly hard to exist

PSA: reposting gifs is stealing!
i'm directing this specifically at the wotshow fandom because i've seen this rampantly in the wot on prime tag in the past week, but it applies to all fandoms.
gifmakers spend hours creating gifsets for you all to enjoy. if you just save their gifs and repost them in your own post without crediting them, as if they were your own gifs that you made, that's extremely disrespectful. it's equivalent to reposting art without crediting the original artist, which as we all know is a big internet no-no.
so, what to do instead?
1) Just Don't Repost Gifs. if you like the gifs so much, just reblog the original damn post. it's not that hard.
2) say you're making a post and you want to use someone else's gif to illustrate your point. use the little gif button within the text post editor. this will allow you to search for gifs on tumblr and insert them into your post, and doing so will automatically put the creator's name at the bottom of the gif and link back to the original post.
Tumblr media
3) what if you have a certain gif you really want to use in your post, but you can't find it in the tumblr-wide gif search feature? then provide the same crediting information, but manually. tag the OP of the gif (this will give them a notification and give them the opportunity to ask you to remove their gif from your post, if they wish) AND link to the original gifset (so that if someone's looking at your post and thinks "wow, what a pretty gif! i'd love to see the full set" they can do so).
(also, i can't speak for all gifmakers. i used to not want my gifs reposted at all, but i've accepted that's a losing battle, so my official stance now is that you may use my gif in your own post IF you properly credit my blog AND my original post using either method 2 or 3 above. but that's my personal stance and other gifmakers may have different ones.)
(also, i should add that methods 2&3 are, for me at least, only if you want to use a specific gif or two for illustrating your point in a text post. if you're thinking of reposting an entire gifset of mine and just, like, giving it a different caption or something, do not do that. just reblog the original gifset.)
what about reposting to other platforms? well, that's also subjective for each gifmaker. i saw one of my gifs reposted to twitter a couple weeks ago and i was kinda pissed about it, although i would've been a little LESS pissed if the tweeter had credited me, which they did not. on the other hand, made-for-tumblr gifs look like ass on other platforms, so i also don't really care that much if twitter users are looking at a tiny shitty compressed version of my lovely gif whilst tumblr users are enjoying to its fullest extent.

The "reblog, don't like. Liking hurts creators" stuff has always gotten on my nerves, who are you to tell me what to put on my blog? But I jsut saw this post, which put it in a different light. https://mayahawkse.tumblr.com/post/691239174316097536/heres-a-little-comparison-for-people-who-say
I' got on Tumblr in 2013, quit around the porn ban, and only came back pretty recently. I didn't realise that people had actually stopped reblogging things from each other.
I guess the "likes hurt creators" thing might have some validity after all. I still really don't like the tone of entitlement or the idea that expressing your appreciation to OP with a like is an insult instead of an expression of appreciation.
The comment section probably cuts into the reblog counts; people have conversations there instead of in reblog chains, and don't have to reblog an entire post just to point out one quick thing or make the same joke as everyone else, but I don't think that comments account for the ratios in that post, especially since the screenshots don't show posts with hefty comments.
So yeah, guys, likes don't hurt creators, but Tumblr is for passing posts around. If you see something you like, you can just reblog it to be all "look at this cool thing I found". You don't have to worry about adding anything meaningful in a reblog, and if you and all your mutuals reblog the same post twelve times in a row, well, that's just how Tumblr works; if someone gets anoyed they can block the post through xkit.
--
Eh. I'd beware of anecdata like that.
I used to get like 2 notes a post and no asks ever. On the rare occasions that I reblogged heavily in a hot fandom of the moment for a month or two, I got a lot of engagement once people realized I was a place to go for that fandom, and I particularly got a lot of reblogs because people wanted that content on their own tumblrs.
Currently, I get a decent number of reblogs, but I get a lot more other interaction because things here tend to be discussions and debates and people don't necessarily want them on their own tumblrs.
--
In my case, I don't like the framing that it hurts creators because that's assuming that a person would have reblogged if they hadn't liked. In reality, they probably just wouldn't have interacted.
People pass posts around all kinds of ways, including pasting links to mine into various discord channels for fandom drama or sending me links to others' posts via chat messages here.
I also don't like the framing that it hurts creators because this only makes sense if you mean that it hurts the ability of visual artists to earn money.
Am I not a creator of a kind? Do I not write copious meta even if a lot of the content here comes from others? My ~engagement numbers~ are not harmed by failing to reblog. My engagement numbers don't matter full stop.
Or maybe, maybe, it's not about money, but it's about clout-chasing nonsense. Boo hoo, my gifset doesn't do numbers because it's not 2012 and I'm not in superwholock fandom now. Oh well. Chase the crowds to another site or chase the megafandoms. That's the only way to get those numbers back.
--
I do think that some time after 2012, people became increasingly afraid of harassment and may have pulled back on interactions, particularly contentful ones, because of that.
But mostly, tumblr has cleared out. Fewer people are using it, and fewer of the ones remaining are using it actively in a way where it makes sense to fill their own blog with content.
Maybe part of the change is that you can't become a BNF of tasteful curation so easily now, so there's no point in reblogging unless it's for yourself?
Maybe it's gifsets that are out of fashion? I don't know.
--
I never had much interest in "look at this cool thing" sans commentary back then, and I have little now. I have my activity page set to hide all that.
The changing phases of a site can be interesting, but we need a bit more than one person's top couple of posts to reach any conclusions.

possible indicators of stolen gifs
(this isn't about going to the gif menu which automatically sources the gif underneath the image itself, this is about downloading and later uploading the image in a completely separate post.) (@gerardwaist's post reminded me to make a proper compilation of information which i've been meaning to do for a bit now because i'm tired so ty kit)
odd or inconsistent resolution - most people make gifs that are 540px wide for single-row gifs, 268px for 2 per row and 176px for 3 per row (as these are the resolutions that the gifs will be displayed on most people's devices when viewing the post in the dash). people who've stolen gifs often don't line gifs up correctly and this can result in oddly pixelated/small or clear/large looking gifs.
generally inconsistent gif style - this is pretty easy to spot, if gifs vary greatly in quality, size and colouring they may not all belong to the op (this is because the maximum image size on tumblr has increased massively over its existence; gifs from before 2012ish often being small with a low frame rate while most after 2017ish are very clean and smooth.)
captions with no source/information - the majority of seasoned gifmakers use the text part of their gif post as a place to denote what the gifset is about, source videos and/or add a relevant passage/quote. stolen gifs are usually accompanied by "reactions" to the gifs rather than information about them.
over-tagging or no tagging at all - since what most people who steal gifs want is engagement, they often over-tag said gifs with things that aren't particularly relevant to the actual content in the post (most people who've been on tumblr a while don't do this because tags are a way to find specific content, not just a way to get your stuff in front of more people. you'll probably get grilled for this).
also, most gifmakers tag their gifs as something along the lines of "my gifs" or another signature tag in order to find their ops later (for example mine is "candy.gif").
new or half-empty account - as i mentioned, a lot of this has to do with how long someone has been on tumblr. gifmaking is a very tumblr-based thing, people who have brand new or semi-active accounts probably aren't gifmakers.
watermarks (i.e. text stating the creator's username) that don't match the url - this can always be because the user has changed their url after making the gif, but if there are other indicators that the gif isn't theirs then it probably isn't.
the post itself isn't about the gif(s) - it may be a diary-type text post, fanfiction etc accompanied by a gif of the character they're talking about. plenty of people source these nowadays but there's always a few who don't get it.
either reply or send a quick message/ask to the person letting them know that they shouldn't repost someone else's gifs without permission and if possible track down the original post(s) to reblog and/or let the gifmaker know. a lot of people genuinely don't know the etiquette around fanmade content online so it's safest to let them know and give them a chance to right themselves before being particularly mean or judgemental.

I'm sorry but i was scrolling through tumblr and came across a nancy drew gif post that you reblogged and u said some pretty stupid things. Just because a gif looks similar to another it DOES NOT meant it has been stolen and I believe your being real arrogant claiming the opinion that it is not from the respected blog who posted it. I SUGGEST YOU STOP BEING SO RUDE AND CARELESS.
PS: Why did u decide to restrict replies? Did you know that you were wrong?
Hey, I didn't restrict replies. Only OP can do that so I guess refer that question to them.
Didn't want to bring this up again but here is the original gifset: https://hucklebucket.tumblr.com/post/733757567721947136
And here is the (now deleted) gifset your friend posted: https://stuckonaglacierwithmacgyver.tumblr.com/post/740324371448676352/did-you-make-all-these-gifs-yourself-apart-from
She then reposted the same gifs with her own watermark over them: https://www.tumblr.com/classymorallygrey/740332748230803456
They're not similar, they're identical.
The lighting on this show being what it is, the odds that she could get identical gifs given the amount of colouring needed on those scenes are pretty small. I asked in a reply (which was then deleted) whether all the gifs had been credited, thinking they'd forgotten to link to some! Which would have been a totally normal mistake to make! They then doubled down. I said literally nothing else to them after that btw.
You can believe me or not, but coming into my DMs, replies, and messages to call me stupid is also pretty rude!

a message for new users:
tumblr isn't like a lot of sites you're used to. if you're younger than i am (and it seems like a good deal of you are) you're probably used to social media sites that throw anything at you to get your attention. sites with algorithms that show you stuff they think you want to see. sites with verification and visible follower counts, so that you can see who is important. sites where you're expected to consume content, and not necessarily to create it. those sites are fun, and it's totally valid that you've learned to engage with them in the ways that you have. but it's not like that here.
a lot of you might be too young to remember when blogs were a mainstay of the internet. basically, people had their own little website where they posted stuff they made (usually writing), often centered around a specific topic or theme. so like, cooking blogs, poetry blogs, parenting blogs, etc. tumblr came about as a way to combine the individual expression of a blog with some of the more social aspects of social media. this way, you could post your own stuff to your blog, but you could also collect cool stuff you liked by reblogging. and then your blog was this cool hybrid of stuff you made and stuff you liked. and you could go find the cool stuff again, because it was on your blog.
you see, tumblr wasn't built for users to be audience members. tumblr was built for creators, and eventually became really well known for the way it cultivated communities. especially fan communities. part of why this worked well is because almost everyone participated. people shared their thoughts and cool stuff they made, they reblogged stuff they liked, maybe even added on to it or talked about why they liked it so much. when we talk about 2014 tumblr and how cool it was, (it wasn't but, y'know, nostalgia), part of that was how a lot of us were teenagers and young people on a site that let us make friends and build communities, where we could completely cultivate our own experience.
being on tumblr without participating in tumblr is kind of like having your camera and microphone off on a zoom call. yeah, we see that you're here. maybe you like a post sometimes, sort of like using the zoom thumbs up. but you're basically a ghost. and it's sad, because we want to hang out in cool little communities, but it feels like we're talking to a sea of faceless voids who don't respond.
when current users say that they want to scare off twitter and tiktok users, or people who make stuff complain about the lack of reblogs or comments, this is why. we're losing the communal aspect of tumblr that made it so great. more and more, users have no profile picture, blank blog titles, and are private or have no posts. they like posts instead of reblogging them. they don't engage. they're audience members. they're blank zoom squares. you feel like you're talking to no one, and it's sad.
so i beg of you, please engage. please reblog that story you liked, and tell the author the one line that made you squeal in the text of the reblog. please reblog that cool gifset you saw, and tell op that the colors are pretty. please reblog that cool art and let the artist know that you wish you could get it tattooed. and, above all, please make your own posts. talk about the weather today, write that story that's been in your head for a few weeks, make fan art of characters from two different shows making out, say something so weird it ends up screenshotted in a "cryptid vibes"pinterest board. send an ask to a user who's been around a while and ask them about the skeleton wars.
this is one of the only spaces left that isn't selling you something, that isn't trying to keep your eyes on it by any means necessary. this is one of the only spaces left that doesn't want you to be an audience member. so please, don't kill this space by refusing to take part in it.
welcome to tumblr. i hope you get the most out of being here that you can.

something to add to your reblog/like convo
i feel like a lot of gifmakers don't like people adding commentary on their gifsets and sometimes that makes us think twice about reblogging. Idk why since it adds notes?
and even if we are criticizing the source of the piece of media (like hopefully it isn't a "i hate this gifset for this character/ship and here's why) like is that not what this website and having your own little blog is about? a collection of your thoughts on the media/art you consume? Idk. I do understand you guys put in a lot of work and I know I cant do it in general nor anywhere near as pretty as you guys so I'm not creating gifs. I know I'm taking a shortcut by saying no I'm not going to start my own gifs to criticize/talk about a show but I guess what's your stance on it? If you're not being a dick about the content of the gifset itself but just adding your thoughts on a scene, or even criticizing the post, can you add those in the tag?
hmm I think the thing about adding comments is more of a personal thing, I'm fine with people adding stuff onto it outside of the tags but I know some people might not so it honestly depends. typically though people stick to putting commentary in tags on any kind of posts. but even no commentary at all while reblogging is better than not reblogging at all, since at least it could reach a wider audience. as for the thing about criticism, I think a point that needs to be made is that we're all here to reblog stuff we like, right? and if you don't like a character/ship then personally I feel like it's better to not engage with the post at all instead of just clicking the like button- the op won't know you scrolled past if you don't engage and there would be less of a depressing like-reblog ratio. but if you like the set but are just going to reblog and find flaws with the editing itself (I've had people come at me because I made a typo with my subtitles once) then that's just being an asshole. I'm curious about what other people think about this tbh
