I do kinda adore this pairing~

I liked how Kat was there for Tommy when the shit with Kim's letter went down. It was done and dusted, and she was there to be a shoulder for him to cry on. She tried to cheer him up by taking him snowboarding and all that shit and asdfgbfbdvscnaddfh I JUST THINK THAT IS SO SWEET!!

I love their moments in Soul of the Dragon. I really don't like a lot of the aspects of that book and how they handled things, but Tommy and Kat's relationship really isn't one of those things. They're perfect. And it's really so sweet, that even when Tommy retires as a sixty year old professor, he's got someone to love and cherish him and they basically grow old together and aaaaaiaiiiiiiiii

THIS ONE is fairly recent. I know Once and Always didn't place a lot of focus on their relationship, but hhhhh that moment where she stands in front of the captured tommy action figure it just HITS SO DEEP. Her expression, when she extends her hand towards it. I feel like they're trying to say so much in that scene, from her eyes, and with JDF's passing irl, I think Catherine Sutherland really, really got it ON POINT. it was beautiful and my heart just. cries. AAAIIIIIIII

So I finally read Soul of the Dragon (late to the party I know I know) and overall I enjoyed it.

Tommy’s plot was great and all but tbh my fave part was…

SPOILERS

…the reveal that Finster wasn’t disintegrated by the Z-Wave, he was purified and became like that kooky-great-uncle friend to Tommy (and presumably the other OG Rangers). And my man just lived out his days in peace using his clay molding skills to make art. I loved it.

Tegan Green-Song was a half-elf ranger, and devotee of the god Lathander. Ever the optimist, she struck out on her own at a young age, with only her companion and pet - a bear, Svir - for company. Wanting to do good in the world, though with little in the way of concrete ideas as to how, she started small, picking her way across the landscape, scattering acts of kindness and vigilante justice along the way.

A few years into her wanderings, she came upon a town besieged by a black dragon. A dreadful, gargantuan beast of impossible power, she knew she would never be able to defeat it on her own. She turned to prayer, instead, hoping that perhaps her god would have an answer - or at least provide her with insight as to how she could defeat it. However, it was not Lathander that answered her prayers, but the Lich God, Vecna.

Sensing the desperation in the young woman, he offered her a deal; he would give her the knowledge and means to slay the dragon, and she would be his Chosen. Thinking herself clever, and believing she could weasel out of such a role with the God, Tegan accepted the deal. But liches, of course, are not like devils or fey, they do not need to write out long-winded contracts, full of clauses, and loopholes sewn tightly shut, and nor are they bound to speak only the truth - no matter how riddlesome it may be. No, liches may lie and cheat and curse, and curse her he did.

Upon accepting the deal, he placed a curse upon her; for every act she did contrary to his tenets, he would own another piece of her soul.

It was slow acting, and it took a number of years after she had defeated the dragon to truly notice the toll it was taking on her. Unknown illness seemed to sap her strength, nightmares infested her dreams, and she could feel herself losing something, though she did not yet know what. She went to a cleric of Lathander, hoping her God could give her answers, and it was from that cleric that she finally learned of the truth of what she had done.

With the curse now hanging over her head, and time steadily ticking away, she set off again to search for a cure, and for Lathander's blessing - if either were even possible.

In Baldur's Gate on her way to search for the Blood of Lathander, she was snatched up by the Nautiloid, and a mindflayer tadpole inserted into her brain. Though the tadpole seems to be staving off the curse, Vecna owning her soul might be the least of her worries.

Something interesting to keep in mind about Tommy's characterization in The Return is how the crux of all adult!Tommy stories in the prime timeline - his status as the legendary, longest-running ranger of all time and how that interferes with his personal life and sense of self - shouldn't really apply to him in The Return's timeline. With all of the OGs keeping their powers their entire lives, he ironically has the shortest career of all of them, if only by a couple weeks/months. So it'll be interesting to see how Tommy is written in a story where he doesn't have the burden he carries in stories like Wedding Vows or Soul of the Dragon; he's "just" Kim's husband and Olivia's father who also happens to be the Green Ranger.

It'll also be interesting considering it's safe to assume this will mostly be written from Kim's perspective, and we already have the impression from the Re-Imagine prologue that she considers the non-Ranger memories of Tommy (the proposal, their wedding, working together as coaches) as positive ones while the Ranger memories were mostly negative. So I think we'll get more about him as a person and husband with the ranger stuff being secondary rather than him as a ranger with the family life stuff being secondary
