imo every water metaphor people throw at faulkner gets better when you remember he can't swim. “stories are currents, and he plunges headlong into those rushing waters, time and time again" yeah and he can't swim. he's drowning in the narrative he's making for himself. "speak now of the man you will leave behind, the man you have been... drown him in the river’s depths" yeah he's been trying to. he kinda always is, a little bit, just by virtue of being there.
it just speaks to such a fundamental incompatibility in my eyes. he's still scared - he ran out of the hotel when he sainted the hotelier in season one and he runs away from the angel he summons in s3e6. it seems like he can only partake in violence through abstraction - it's just water and symbols until someone's dead or changed in front of him, and then it's real. the withermark is a holy triumph until he counts the houses and the people inside, and then it's something no one should ever have. sacrifice is foundational to all faith in this universe. this isn't something he can avoid, even if the upcoming schism lets him steer his part of the faith where he wants.
(and, to tangent, someone telling him that they finally killed her in some distant town isn't real because he didn't see her face when she hit the soil. if that happens then she's just someone who's not there anymore and he can keep on missing her like he's been doing. i am convinced this is why he gave the shoot on sight order.)
it’s mentioned that he's left alone in his room at the gulch for hours at a time, just like when his father would neglect him and his brothers and leave them to their own devices. he wants a real and genuine love like family, but instead gets worship and idolatry from one hand and schemes to kill him from the other. he keeps climbing the ranks, distancing himself from the potential of gaining the closeness he craves, all in the hope of getting closer to the god he's losing faith in. he's crawling towards the river and he can't swim.
he is trying to love something that wants to drag him under. even if there wasn't a god in the river, the water would greedily swallow him anyway. river currents do not care about your love. he is putting the sunk in sunk cost fallacy. he’s participating in reverse self-immolation. he is drowning in deep water and has only just learned how to keep his eyes open without goggles. he needs to reach the surface but he still can't fucking swim. he is going to die thrashing in the river he loves so much, trying to get out once he realized it wasn't ever going to love him back the way he wanted.
and if he can’t learn how to swim in time, he’s going to need the help of someone who can to pull him out.

So... Please tell me I'm not the only who has Thoughts. About Hayward's plan to recruit Shrue and specifically Carpenter's involvement in it because. Adjudicator Shrue has been working to legalise the Trawler-Man's people and was working with Mason and the current Katabasions. Before that they were trying to eradicate them, being the one to hire and send out Mercer and Gage with their own platoon of soldiers.
Which brings us to Faulkner and his murder of Mason and Thurrocks, his opposition to the Katabasions plans to legalise them and let the Withermark and their people be used as a weapon of war, and the story he spins pinning the murders on Carpenter, painting her as a traitor who was working with the legal authorities (aka Shrue) and undermining them:
FAULKNER:
I could never have imagined that the Legislatures could have won her over to their cause.
It was Sister Carpenter who alerted the government’s forces to the location of the Paraclete’s Gulch.
(With a weary finality)
But they had, and of course her return was no coincidence at all.
It was Sister Carpenter who attempted to undermine our defences from within.
And after their attack failed, thanks to the combined strength of our disciples…it was Sister Carpenter who waited for a moment when the entire Gulch was gathered below in joyful celebration, and she assassinated Katabasian Mason and poor Sister Thurrocks.
(3x01 Something Dreadful Shall Arise)
And we know how strongly Carpenter feels about the idea that she would ever work with the government legislatures against the people who were once her family, how angry she is that Faulkner has written a story that has made that lie true:
CARPENTER:
You think I’d ever make peace with the people who did it? You think I’d work with them against my own family?
Against my brother, my parents, my grandmother?
You think I wouldn’t have put a bullet in my own skull already if I had that weight pulling me down?
And I think it's important to point out that Carpenter has no idea why Faulkner killed Mason and Thurrocks. She doesn't know anything about Mason and the other Katabasisons plans to legalise their god by proving themselves useful as a tool in the war. But we do know that in the past, when the idea of legalising the Trawler-Man was brought up before in S1 by Paige as a more peaceful way forward, she loathed the idea as much as Faulkner:
PAIGE:
But this is what's absurd, isn't it? We're talking about ancient history. Laws from 50 years back, long dead legislatures.
They're accepting new faiths back into the canon all the time now. You just need to get your god's name on a petition and-
CARPENTER:
Listen to her, Faulkner. "Our god's name, on a petition". Well. Why shouldn't we be reasonable about all this? Now that the Peninsula is ready to hear our case?
Why shouldn't we go through the proper channels? Why shouldn't they be allowed to get away with it?
FAULKNER:
Carpenter, let's keep this quiet...
CARPENTER:
My parents were dragged in shackles to the Saints hydroelectric dam, a year after I was born. They were dragged there, they were sentenced, and they were tossed off the side into the churning waters.
And the last words that they ever heard were that they were to be devoured by something that they did not understand. Because the dam was new, and on unconsecrated, and because a god must feed, and because these false faith renegades from deep in the fens made for the easiest sacrifices.
I will not hear that the world is a better place than it was because there is process. I won't and I can't.
(1x12 And To Fight Is Just to Choke)
And now Carpenter is with Hayward, and are headed towards Adjudicator Shrue to try and work with them so they can help the Woundtree seem more sympathetic and have someone who can better tell their story, as it were.
Carpenter is still being hunted by Faulkner's schism, only being given a break by being in a no man's land, only now she won't be, as she's heading into Glottage.
CARPENTER:
(Staring out of the window)
If we stayed on this road heading south, we’d make it down to Marcel’s Crossing by nightfall.
Another day’s driving, and we’d be at the Paraclete’s Gulch.
(3x06 The Wise Man Knows the Taste of Rot)
So the next time Faulkner hears about Carpenter, it's going to be about how gosh, you were right all along Katabasion Faulkner, that devious Carpenter is working with the same government official who tried to eradicate us and who is now trying to legalize us to use as a tool in their war! (that's not even mentioning she'll be seen with Hayward as well, who as far as Faulkner is aware is the cop who was hunting them down back in S1) And Faulkner is just gonna be like
Tumblr media
Wondering if he told his lie about Carpenter working with the legal authorities undermine the Parish of Tide and Flesh so convicingly that he made it into the truth and what's that? IT'S THE FOILING TO VAL AND THE LAST WORD WITH A STEEL CHAIR READY TO BEAT ME SENSELESS-

Better to die like this, probably.
Better alone.
So they don’t have to see you.
So you don’t have to look at them when you go.
Like an old dog burrowing under the floorboards.
Up ahead on the roadside, there’s the shape of an abandoned car, and hope, pure hope, swells for a heartbeat...
...until you get a little closer, and you can see the true detail of the rusted wreck.
Its passenger seat is dangling open.
Its bonnet is a broken shell.
Wildflowers are growing up through the wheels.
Tumblr media
Hiiii guys I couldn’t stop thinking about the car where Carpenter collapses at the end of season one. I feel like it’s a really beautiful place and I’ve never seen anyone draw it before. So here ya go. This was also a chance to practice scene drawing as I almost never draw scenes 😅 I just really like drawing people

“ Babygirl, you are awkward and do not understand social cues. ” — Eddie !
billy blinks, because it's like a fucking gust of wind hitting him in the face. he's mopey now, he mopes, because he kinda wishes he hadn't been saved. he stares at eddie. and by now billy feels like he should be used to it. the things eddie says. the shit he pulls. but this one is different. where to fucking start? it makes him chuckle. just unbelievable. he let's the criticism of social cues pass right by. billy pretends most of the time. it ain't his fault people are so uninteresting they are shocked when billy does or says anything. "-what did you call me?" to his face. he's still fucking giggling. trying so hard to hide the fact that it makes his heart flutter and feel dizzy. he won't. he's acting offended. mostly just shocked. "-no, no, no, say that again what the fuck did you call me?" the old billy bubbles back up. in like an endearing way almost.

@disasterconspiracy | x | for skara!
It was over.
The sky had turned into a shade of color more similar to the human realm's sky than what it was previously. A hand was reaching out into the sky, red grass growing over what houses she could see there. Faintly, she could see people on palisman holding onto said palismen for dear life.
They were fine, it looked like. She directed Azura downwards, claws wrapped around the staff.
Everyone had gathered at the owl house already. Luz was aiming to reunite with someone else.
Landing in front of Hexside, the half-titan jumped off of her palisman's staff. Azura started to move, the bat landing on Luz's shoulder, her usual perch. Luz scratched Azura's head, then glanced around, looking at the reunions of a few others.
There. In the crowd.
Luz bolted into a run, feet claws slamming into the ground and leaving some scars.
"Skara!" She shouted, and instantly went in for the lift + spin. "I'm so glad to see you again!"

faulkner is actually really funny when you think about it
he is directly responsible for one drowning and indirectly responsible for many more at the age of 13. he then sits on this for 6 years.
within the first two episodes, it’s established that he’s been a member of the faith for 16 days. this is his first mission. the mission has also been going on for 16 days.
three days into this mission, he saints a man and turns him into a shrimp creature.
less than a week after that, he finds the crab equivalent of a nuke.
he nearly dies after summoning his god, gets a dorky staff in the process, and walks all the way back to the church, at which point he collapses in the middle of a sermon.
he gets a promotion, spends months in luxury, realizes he doesn't quite like this position like he thought he would, and then gets sent back out on a mission - as the leader of the group this time.
somehow, between the crab nuke and his second mission, about eight months pass. i assume most of that was him relaxing and not him walking. faulkner's day off - more like faulkner's half-year off.
this mission takes over a week but probably not as long as two, over the course of which all of his charges die except for one.
he spends a couple days getting kidnapped, rescued, and hightailing it back to base in order to prevent the religious battle that is about to go off
he survives said battle as a beacon to his people, increasing his credit
he then proceeds to kill one of his higher-ups and one of his followers
his god goes legal and there’s now an empty katabasian spot. i wonder who’ll take it. i wonder.
within the span of less than a year, he goes from a new member to someone of high ranking. he has effectively speedran religion, doubly so if he either dies as a martyr or becomes a disgraced heretic in s3. the momentum he held from drowning many people at 13 was enough to shoot him over the finish line. he has jumped into the river with both feet, completely forgetting that he can’t swim. silly guy. i hope he cries in s3. he needs it.

DENNIS:
(Suddenly a little unnerved)
So wait, did I hear that right? A, uh, sacrifice.
PAIGE draws a knife.
PAIGE:
(Deadpan)
Well, why do you think I let you come out here with us, Dad?
DENNIS:
(Startled)
You wouldn’t-
You’re joking. Aren’t you?
PAIGE:
PAIGE chuckles at him as she walks straight past him.
Limited but meaningful, was it?
We hear her gasp as she cuts her palm. We hear the blood dribbling down as she walks, spreading it across the monument in some kind of pattern.
(She stops, bandaging her hand.)
(Chapter 23 I'd Howl and Scream In Victory)
There's something oddly fitting to me about Paige using her own blood as a sacrifice instead of her father's to birth a new god that she can believe in. Paige said to Carpenter in the previous season that she never found a god to believe in, but her relationship with her father and how she describes it does (to me at least) reflect the other characters relationship with their respective gods.
"And when I tell you yes, you'll praise me, in a sweet and loving voice, and ask me for just a little more, a little more for something else that needs to be taken care of. I'll tell you yes, more often than not. I feed your love, because I need to hear it, even if I can never quite believe in it."
(Chapter 7 It Carries Few it Drowns Many)
How she needs her father's approval, his praise and love to be certain of herself, how much control she felt like he had over her life, and needing to "feed" his love with money, and it never being quite enough to ever satisfy him because he'd always ask for more eventually, much like how the gods constantly demand sacrifices to feed them. It definitely clicked when Paige's dad Dennis himself said it
"gods, people, we all need to feed on something!"
And why he specifically is present in chapter 23 and openly opposing Paige's idea of a new god. He represents the status quo of the gods and their system to Paige specifically that she wants to challenge.
"You give so you can take. You help so you can hurt.
You’ve never done a single thing for me that you didn’t make me pay for."
So, using the blood of herself is like bleeding an old god to birth a new one. One that Paige can actually believe in, as she believes in herself. She as a person is meaningful as The Many Below's first sacrifice, but limited, and wants to grow beyond that through the god she's trying to create and what she wants to accomplish. It's something she wants to be apart from her father and everything other god that exists in this world.

some thoughts on what happens after the day of unity:
this is all subject to change after we see the final two episodes && see how things pan out, but it’s safe to assume that the boiling isles are in chaos, both from the havoc wreaked by the collector && the power vacuum created in the wake of belos’ true intentions coming to light.
it’s safe to say that the boiling isles don’t need another emperor. their entire societal structure is going to need to change, but it also won’t be able to go back to how it was in the savage ages, && they’ve gotten too used to having a power hierarchy. they need a leader — && that leader is raine.
they’re strong. they’re used to leading a team ( both as coven head && in the rebellion ). they’ve never been power-hungry, && they have plenty of humility. they’re certainly not going to seek out this job, but i imagine there are many people who would turn to them simply because they seem like the best person to trust. we don’t get to see what happens in the months between king’s side && the end of thanks to them, but it seems reasonable to assume that raine would be stepping up to help everyone both rebuild && stay safe from whatever is happening in the meantime.
so, that’s what happens. the people need to choose a new leader. someone suggests raine. there’s nearly unanimous agreement. even the most power-hungry people in the covens have just had their entire worldview shattered — but raine knew, && raine has the mental fortitude to push past the trauma && do what’s best for everyone.
( i also think a conversation happens regarding hunter, && whether he has any claim to the throne — he technically would count as belos’ heir, but opinions are too divided in terms of whether he’s trustworthy, && in the end he’s very adamant about the fact that he just wants to be a normal kid... && there shouldn’t be a throne, or an emperor. && that’s when raine’s name comes up. )
so raine becomes the president(?), && slowly things rebuild. they get married to eda a short time later, && they have the biggest wedding on the isles, && raine is completely embarrassed by it && very much in love.
the anniversary of the day of unity becomes a holiday in the demon realm, a day of remembrance && mourning but also commemoration && gratitude for their survival. raine always hosts a gathering, a big dinner. their doors are open to everyone, but the core group that comes every year is eda, king, luz, amber, katya, derwin, && hunter. darius && eberwolf are there more often than not, && amity often comes along too, which means gus && willow are there too. in a gesture of goodwill, raine always invites the other former coven heads ;   most of the time, they decline, but they’re always very grateful for the offer. terra is the only one who has never attended, && never responds.

❛ rough day today? ❜ from robin!
billy   sits,   his   knees   pressed   up   to   his   chest.   he   usually   retreats   to   his   room   in   this   house   that   isn’t   his   but   he   doesn’t   want   to   be   alone.   less   when   he   feels   this   level   of   fucking   shitty.   people   died.   people   died   and   it   was   his   fault.   and   he   feels.   he   feels   things   he   wishes   he   didn’t   in   all   honestly.   and   he   has   never   been   great   at   talking.   to   people.   to   anyone   really.   he   sighs,   uncurls,   legs   stretched   out.   turns   his   head,   in   a   movement   that   may   seem   uninterested   but   it’s   rather.   just.   quiet.   and   small,   nothing   like   the   billy   hargrove   people   used   to   know.   “-i   need   a   cig.”   he   says   it   in   hopes   that   this   robin   chick   will   take   pity.   in   the   sense   that,   he   shouldn’t   be   smoking.   dying   turns   out   can   really   fuck   up   the   lungs.   and   your   liver.   yet,   he   needs   an   out.  and   maybe   she   can   help.   it's   worth   a   try.

what tragic horror character trope are you?

the harbinger
the harbingers have been through fire. you've got the scars to show for it. some people say harbingers are jaded- scary, even, to people who don't understand that the harbinger has seen the edge of the world and survived it. but being the harbinger means you're cursed to watch younger, brighter eyes fall for the same traps you did. trying to help isn't enough for you; you know what they're getting themselves into, and you want to protect them the way no one ever protected you, so why won't they just listen? it's frustrating. it's terrifying. no one should have to live through what you did, and i hope you know that you can't protect everyone but it's damn noble of you to try. it's not your job to save the world but i hope you know you've already made a difference to everyone who has taken your words to heart.

in case anyone was wondering i’m still crying screaming throwing up over the fact that out of all the adjectives he could’ve used to describe dave, the very first thing klaus says is “he was kind.” like yes he was strong and vulnerable and beautiful, but he treated klaus with KINDNESS and that is the one thing klaus remembers above all else.
dave was kind. and that was what mattered to klaus
