Mother, Father, what's afoot?
Only Possum, black as soot.
Mother, Father, where to tread?
Far from Possum, and his head.
Here's a bag, now what's inside?
Does he seek or does he hide?
Can you spy him, deep within?
Little Possum, black as sin.
Bag is open, growing wider.
What's inside it, man or spider?
Little boy, don't lose your way.
Possum wants to come and play.
Look at Possum, there he lies.
Children meet his lifeless eyes.
See his nasty legs and tongue.
When he wakens, watch him run.
Wait a while, my little child,
For what is playing dead.
Possum, with his black balloons,
Will eat you up in bed.
Happy valley, painted black,
All the children in a sack.
Wave goodbye to sun and moon.
Say hello to black balloon.
The parcel opened, out it sprang,
The black, long-legged Possum Man.
Children, run! He'll eat and smother,
Any child without a mother.

Idk if anyone's still talking about Possum in the year 2024, but I just can't stop thinking of the "I had no idea" scene.
I'd already read the short story, so I already knew that Maurice was the one who abducted Philip as a child, but in the scene where they're burning the puppet, Maurice brings it up. At first, it seems like he's being cruel as usual, but Philip starts fretting and Maurice actually looks sorry. There's this pained look on his face, like actual regret, when Philip isn't looking at him. (Rule of thumb: if no one's looking at you, your action can't be performative.)
I don't want to pull the "oh, he actually feels bad about what he did!" card. I never want to hear that in my life. But I also know that--especially in instances where you needlessly torture a child--there Can be a conflict of gratification vs guilt. Idk, it was a humanizing moment that I think added to the fact that Maurice was actually fucking alive and not a ghost?? It could be Philip's own denial or wishful thinking if Maurice had been a ghost. But I genuinely think that Maurice was alive and he had a moment of actual civility.

When I was 17 I made a comprehensive Freudian psychoanalysis of the film Possum for my psychology teacher to show I was dedicated to the subject.
Filled with pictures (that I’m sure are haunted cause the printer refused to print them out) and quotes from the film like all made to the film aesthetics.
Sadly you can count this as lost media as the teachers classroom was knocked down (i guess my project was too horrific).
Anyway here are some notes I made for it :]]]
She couldn’t look me in the eyes for a few weeks afterwards…I didn’t mean to creep her out oops…

So I'm watching a horror movie for every day in October, but since I started late, I'm watching four tonight to make up for lost time. I watched Possum, which was okay. I bet if I rewatched it I would like it more. The connection between the puppet and Phillip's trauma was really well thought out, but I also feel like the movie dragged for a long time, and the ending was too quick to be satisfying

I watched - Possum - 2018
"Patches!?!?!"
I watched this because Tubi was like, "hey you liked Lake Mungo right? What about theeese fine options." Which I get is to keep you watching for ad revenue/data collection. But also funny with an adblocker. Anywho.
I was mediumly on-board? I couldn't immerse myself to get over it mostly being just a guy throwing around a puppet. I got it. But something about the movie just made it slip through my grasp. A story about childhood trauma, and returning to wrestle with that is compelling though. I feel like the movie was bogged down by trying to hit a runtime? Unsure.
