Port Colborne Feline Initiative preparing for busy spring kitten season
Tumblr media
As spring returns flowers begin to bloom, trees put out new leaves, and across Port Colborne and the Niagara Region many kittens will be born. In spring and summer 2022 the Port Colborne Feline Initiative took in 68 kittens, in addition to several other adult cats. “We took in five pregnant ones last year. They […]

Today in Great Lakes shipping history. December 28th.
2022: Ice is becoming more of a problem every hour these days.
Vessels in the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway locks are also encountering late December ice. Heavy ice at Port Colborne is causing problems, with tug Vac trying to flush ice between each lockage though Lock 8. The process is leading to about an hour between downbound transits.
Ice cover has been growing quickly in Duluth-Superior, thanks to a run of sub-zero weather, though vessels are still moving there without much difficulty thanks to tug and icebreaker assistance.

Viking on the Great Lakes
Guess what floated past our cottage one recent evening ...?
The Viking Octantis. And, no, it didn't stray off course from the Danube River. It was exactly where it was supposed to be.
Last year, Viking - that high-end river cruise company - added Great Lakes cruises to its repertoire.
One option - a 15-day voyage between Toronto and Duluth, Minnesota - includes calls at Niagara Falls (Port Colborne) , Cleveland, Detroit, Mackinac Island and other places.

Did you hear about this brilliantly silly election in Ontario?
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/oct/21/canada-ontario-port-colborne-mayor-steele-brothers
Tumblr media
This is the premise of a family comedy. I love it.
But actually the guy's stated reason for running - that otherwise his brother would be re-elected by acclamation - is totally legitimate imo. Uncontested elections just leave a bad taste in my mouth as a concept, even if it's just for the mayorship of a small town.

"TWO SAW WAY OUT OF JAIL MAKE LADDER, SCALE WALL," Toronto Star. May 14, 1943. Page 3. --- Cut Six Iron Bars on Window at Welland, Tear Boards Out of Shed --- ONE FROM TORONTO --- Special to The Star Welland, May 14 - Police in the Niagara peninsula today are hunting for John Stark, alias Stack, 24, Crowland, and Peter Max, 27, Toronto, who escaped from the county jail here during the night.
Stark and Max sawed their way out of their cell with hacksaws, crossed the corridor and sawed through six iron bars on a new window in the north side of the jail. They also sawed away the iron sash and crossbars of the window itself. Dropping down six feet from the window into the jail yard, they went to an old woodshed and broke away a part of the shed. With this lumber they fashioned a ladder to scale the jail wall and dropped 25 feet to the street.
The escaped men had been on remand for the past two weeks. They were arrested by provincial police near Port Colborne. They allegedly were carrying three revolvers, one an automatic. Police said they picked them up in a stolen car,
("We want these men in Toronto," stated Inspector of Detectives Arthur Levitt of Toronto police. "They are wanted on housebreaking and car theft charges. One of the revolvers found on them was stolen from Oriole Parkway in Toronto."
(Police also stated the men are wanted in Hamilton on theft and shopbreaking charges.)
The men's escape was discovered by a night guard, Harry Herman.
"We suspect they got outside help in some way," said Sheriff V. L. Davidson of Welland county. "They have had visitors."
C. F. Neelands, deputy provincial secretary, said the men would be wearing civilian clothes. "There are about 25 prisoners in the jail," he said.

canadian_lady7719: I met @elisabethmossofficial and @burtonleblanc for the first time back in 2020 when s4 was being filmed here in Port Colborne. Little did I know I would actually end up participating in the show for a few episodes a year and a half later, on the episodes that @elisabethmossofficial directed!! For this episode in particular, it was such a unique and unforgettable experience spending a few days filming with the show. To be in the presence of these actors whom I admire so much, and as a huge fan of this show to literally have a front row view on what it takes to make this show was mind blowing. I have never done background before, or anything in television for that matter. 32 hours to film the procession literally walking a block… a 7 minute scene, so beautifully done. The calming leadership that Lizzie has on set is remarkable. This cast has so much fun together when cameras aren’t rolling…@bradleywhitford serenading us about Fred being dead, @maxminghella dancing (probably to keep warm). @yvonnestrahovski and @officialevercarradine working those heels like champs in that cold! Thank you @handmaidsonhulu for having me for a few days. Grey is now my colour 😉🙏 🐝 Photo credit to @burtonleblanc for catching me on the street in action 🙏 📷 😊
