It seriously irks me that people say that Kiara “homie hopped” through all three boys. Do we forget that both John B and Pope made the move FIRST. John B kissed her and then Pope put his arm around Kie when she was literally crying. She made her boundaries clear with John B and if I were Pope, after having her take my arm off of her, THAT WOULD’VE BEEN THE END RIGHT THERE! I would NOT have tried again but HE DID WHEN IT WAS CLEAR SHE DIDN’T LIKE IT TO BEGIN WITH! JJ has been the only person she has been able to make decisions with on her own time, nothing forced…just perfect. Quit calling my girl a hoe cause she is far from it.

The way the OBX fandom has a weird hate train on Kiara for not reason is why I’ll keep calling this fandom racist and misogynist.

Because how is valid for Pope to be an asshole to Kie after she rejected him on Season 1 but Kie isn’t valid for feeling confused about him during the crazy time they were experiencing. How is Kiara invalidated for saying she’s a pogue and will always be one because she’s rich but Sarah doesn’t get the same treatment. Sarah who’s family owned half the island and is richer than Kiara will ever be — Kie’s family did build their way up from pogues to kooks. AND Kiara was always defending the boys and would stand up to them even in front of the elite rich.

How is Kiara the one to blame for John B kissing her that one time. It’s not her fault they all wanted her and were making moves on her. She shut that down and it was never brought back again. Neither him or Kie care about that. How is Kiara still blamed for yelling murderer at ward. It was stupid but it was a reaction. Since then she has made it up for it and not even JJ and Pope held it against her. Why should you?

Saying Kiara gets "passed around" isn’t the take you think it is. Pope is the only one she actually dated and slept with once (if we can even count that dating). She shouldn’t be blamed for not loving him. She did try. It just didn’t work out.

Like, if you’re going to defend a characters wrongs and rights make sure to add Kiara into the equation, otherwise I’ll just think you’re a racist. How do you walk around simping for Rafe but hate on Kiara for breathing. How you’re out there defending Sarah cheating on John B (that’s my girl but it was wrong) but at the same time say Kie gets passed around.

i think the reason why the pates were so ready to abandon their other ships its coz even they realized that apart from jarah they hadnt put much effort into them. popekie and jjcleo would've been doa coz they're too compatible it becomes boring. just look at jiara and how it organically enriches both of their characters which makes for a better ship the audience want to root for. it also forces them to think about the kook/pogue dynamic which they dont with jarah much.

No because the ones they picked are so much better even just from a writing standpoint, chemistry aside. You’re exactly right about the organically enriching; I don’t want to watch ships that are practically the same person? Kie and Pope not so much, but JJ and Cleo would’ve easily fallen into that.

Kie and JJ are so alike in the important ways of what they want. And I love the pattern of JJ worrying about their differences but Kie constantly seeing their similarities. “Your parents hate me.” “Well they feel the same about me.” They just provide so much of what the other needs? JJ is that adventure and free spirit that Kie has always wanted, and Kie is so capable of providing JJ with the emotional intimacy he’s always struggled with. She’s his safe haven. And you’re 100% right about the pogue kook dynamic. We got to explore how Kie is both and neither, which I’m not at all convinced would have happened with pokie. Pope is a “respectable” pogue that wouldn’t have fired up her parents the same way. So what it led to is a more complex and nuanced version of the pogue/kook dynamic in comparison to Jarah’s pretty black and white one.

And with Pope and Cleo I love the direction it took both their characters as well. Cleo helps Pope relax and I love the fact that it showed him that the plan he’s always had for things like his love life might not always be the best one. You have to see what’s in front of you sometimes. And with Cleo they got to lean into Pope providing the stability Cleo had never had. They both want that and it just wouldn’t have made sense with JJ.

I’m just so happy to see how much the writers learned from S1. They definitely didn’t realize how much work it takes to get an audience to like a ship when they started off, but now they all have storylines that feel respectable and real.

It will never not piss me off that there’s still a narrative about Kie wanting all 3 of the boys, so here’s my analysis —

JohnKie: The things that JJ & John B read as romantic signals toward John B in s1 can easily be explained by Kie’s awareness that he’s grieving, making her more compelled to comfort him & worry about him, even hyper-focus on his needs b/c they seem the most urgent. And then when John B makes a move, she immediately shuts it down & only revisits it to ask if he told JJ (more on him in a sec).

PopeKie: Pope seems to be the most level-headed Pogue generally (though they’re all silly teenagers at times) & he’s the one that her parents could grow to embrace b/c of his ambitions & solid family unit. Even during her rebellious streak, she still loves her parents & wants them to accept her/them. That may not be the canon reason she gravitates to Pope, but I think it explains her getting involved with him despite their utter lack of actual romantic chemistry or compatibility (other than bad writing direction).

Jiara: If you’re paying half enough attention to the ad-libs of these actors & editing of this show, this one is obvious, so I shan’t say more than this: Kie wants it. JJ wants it. We want it.

let’s talk about it. pope/kie/jj were always such an unintentional love triangle because jj is always during most of the popekie scenes.

in the 110 kie and pope argument after she rejects him and he storms out of the wreck they film jjs reaction to it and he is the back during the whole argument, jjs reaction to their first kiss, kie holding his hand and the frame is still just the three of them, basically all 201-204 with jj always on frame but the funny thing… is always kie and jj closer together in the frame. if you watch the show without context you would think the couple are jj and kie of the three. jj wanting info on their relationship on 201 and pope immediately sensing a vibe between them when he got in the car. jjs reaction to kie kissing his cheek, but also, jj was the one that pushed kie to consider pope. the focus on jjs face when pope said he thinks kiara likes him on 205. sarah messing w jj when pope and kie left to hookup. the “why you always take his side, why you never go mine” and lastly, his face when he sensed trouble in paradise on 206. jj being the one to tell pope to take kie on a date w otis redding playing and like, he was always inserting himself in that relationship. and he also inserted himself in jb and kiara too. he was begging jb to date kiara like he was projecting on it. on 103 pope says he thinks kie might like someone else and in the same episode we have the famous ‘did you tell jj?’ from her.

for someone that “didn’t plan jiara” everything alights so well for them in the show.

Thank you for summing up exactly why this is such an epic ship. I really don't have much to add. Even if it was by accident the writers have managed to craft a beautiful arc for jiara that starts in 1x01. There are elements of a love triangle there but they managed to thread the needle pretty well so it didn't become overbearing. Probably the main reason it works is because JJ is never vying for Kie's affection, in fact he is convinced he'll never have it. You see signs that he has feelings but he's not pursuing her and while he is pining away in the background she is slowly realising that the right fit, the good weird, is to be found with JJ and not Pope. Ugh I love them. It's going to be so satisfying to rewatch the whole show and see everything unfold.

I love it too!! And I just love how certain Kie was of her feelings all season. They both needed that.

Like Kie never showed real interest in the other boys and never had true agency when it came to past ‘love interess’ but as soon as she realised JJ was an option like that she was all in and wanted him to know.

And then JJ. Fuck. We know JJ wasn’t running because he didn’t feel the same was. He was jsut scared. And having Kie constantly being in him. Telling him not to run. Be sure of herself. Telling him not once but twice that she loves him, not for him to say it back, but just so he knows.
