Police are investigating after the United Church in Ponoka was vandalized on Thursday.
Mounties say someone threw eggs and splattered tar and an unknown substance on the rainbow sidewalk leading to the church.
"I was gutted, shattered, just really demoralized," said Jessica Jones of the Ponoka Pride Society.
Members of the church congregation first painted the steps in 2020, to show solidarity with the LGBTQ2S+ community.
Graham Boys of the church said he's disappointed someone would vandalize the steps, particularly during Pride month. [...]

Mr. Orr: Mr. Speaker, time and time again Ottawa flaunts its provincial biases. Even now as Alberta fights back against the federal government’s imperious and unbalanced laws harder than ever, Ottawa still mocks us.

alberta queer history time yeehaw!!
so irresponsible of me to forget and I’m sorry this is last minute but here’s your pride-eve announcement:
Are you interested in 2SLGBTQ+ history? Do you need a little mental health walk after that shitty transphobe got elected in Ponoka? Can you be outside Edmonton City Hall at 5pm on Thursday, June 1st?
RSVP here for the free tour led by none other than former City Councillor (and one of the first openly gay politicians in the country let alone the city) Michael Phair to learn about how Edmonton was and is still being built into a safe and welcoming city for queer folks through the 70s, 80s and 90s to today.
in Edmonton this month but can’t make it tomorrow? don’t worry there’s More or you can pick up a free map to take your own self-guided tour from the Stanley A. Milner Library or download it straight to your phone
I know Calgary pride is traditionally in September but you can find out about Calgary Gay History’s upcoming walks here and find out where to get a copy of Calgary’s Queer Map.

An insane old tree called The Thinking Tree. It's in Ponoka, Alberta and no one knows how old it is. It's a Manitoba maple.
Whole middle is dead. Looks like the branches rooted in the places they dipped down and then grew new trees?

"Will Make Start on the Fort Saskatchewan Gaol This Fall," Edmonton Bulletin. July 23, 1913. Page 8. --- Hon. A. J. McLean, Provincial Secretary, Says Overcrowded Condition of Gaols of the Province Will Necessitate the Immediate Erection of Big Gaol at the Fort. --- Hon. A. J. McLean, provincial secretary, announced yesterday in view of the overcrowded condition in the gaols of the province a start would probably be made this fall on the new provincial gaol at Fort Saskatchewan. The gaol will be erected on the site at present occupied by the Mounted Police barracks, which the province has secured from the Dominion government. The gaol will probably be larger than that at Lethbridge, which has accommodation for about 100 prisoners. It will be used for prisoners committed in the northern half of the province, the cost of transportation of prisoners to Lethbridge being one of the biggest items in connection with the conduct of the prison system in Alberta.
Mr. McLean further stated that after the gaol at Fort Saskatchewan had been built a third gaol would probably be erected at Calgary. A gaol was needed in the centre as well as in the southern and northern parts of the province.
The crops at the provincial gaol at Lethbridge and the Ponoka asylum are in fine shape. In connection with the Lethbridge farm the growing of sugar beets is being largely undertaken. This industry is profitable and provides a large amount of employment for the prisoners. During the summer the broom factory is closed down, the prisoners being employed on the farm and on road work. Broom making will be resumed in the fall. when outdoor work ceases
Since the new wing at the Asylum was opened there has been no over crowding at the Asylum which will be able to meet the needs of thi province for some time to come.

A bakery owner in Ponoka, Alta. says a Pride flag in her store window has become the cause of conflict between her and her landlords. If she wants to keep her Pride flag up, she may have to do so at a new store.
Sarah Kumar has been baking cakes at her store for over a year and until a few weeks ago she never had any issues with her landlords.
“They had asked me to take down the little Pride flag that I have in the window of my shop. They had also asked me in that letter, to stop hosting any Pride meetups, coffee chats that sort of thing,” Kumar said.
Kumar owns Sarah’s Specialty Cakes at Riverbank Common and has been told by her landlords that the flag and the after-hours meet-ups violate her lease.

Crumpling Health Care System
Flipping through the news there is article after article of health care facility temporary closures. They range from ER departments to obstetrics due to physician and nurse shortages. This is not only in Alberta, but across the country. Canada is a country that has always had good affordable health care. Now we are faced with the issue of our local health care center not being able to provide care. What if you didn’t have the means to go to another center? What would happen?
Along with temporary closures to health care facilities, the wait times for an ambulance have increased as well. These issues show the strain which has been placed on our health care system. So how is this supposed to get better? During the pandemic AHS added 230 paramedics and over 1000 registered nurses, but this is not enough. Government funding for health care has been increased, but without the proper trained staff this will go unrecognized.
Along with everything else, the cost of receiving an education has also risen. For those who don’t qualify for student loans and cannot afford to pay out of pocket choose not to go to school to obtain a career. To me it seems like those who are wanting to make a difference, are not able to, due to financial limitations. The average cost of an undergraduate nursing program in Canada is $21,922. This is just tuition, let alone if you need to relocate to gain an education, as well as books and basic living expenses. This number is out of reach for most people. For those who don’t have the prerequisites they will need to spend more on school to be able to enter the program.
So, with all of this, how are we going to face this crisis within our country to provide the population with accessible healthcare? I believe this issue is one in which is a long way from being resolved. Our country brings in lots of physicians from underdeveloped countries, but this hasn’t solved the issue and has only caused more crises around the world. I have read stories about people dying in ER’s waiting to see a doctor, which is heartbreaking as they are in a place in which they should be safe. We need to figure out this issue and resolve it before the situation gets much worse. Those who are working in the healthcare field have been overworked and are facing burnout due to the pandemic, making it unsafe for them to provide care for patients. We need to first take care of those who are already in this field, and then promote others to join to lessen the strain. The government needs to act and work to resolve this issue before we don’t have anyone left willing to work in this field.
