SWAMP RABBITS ANSWER BACK IN GAME 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eberle nets game-winner; three multi-point performers shine in win  BY: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC—Tanner Eberle broke a deadlock in a wild third period to headline the Greenville Swamp Rabbits' Game 2 win over the Orlando Solar Bears by a 4-2 score on Monday night. The win for the Swamp Rabbits splits the series at 1-1 heading into the next three games in Orlando this weekend. Both teams repeated Game 1 and skated scoreless through 20 minutes of play. Jacob Ingham manned the net again for Greenville and staved away only four shots on the net, while Evan Fitzpatrick turned away 15 in the opening frame. The deadlock was finally broken by the Swamp Rabbits, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Josh McKechney started off the scoring when he slammed a Colton Young effort in close range of the net past Fitzpatrick to push the Swamp Rabbits ahead 1-0 at 2:28 (Young and Quinn Olson assisted, the latter earning his first professional point). Following the goal, the Swamp Rabbits penalty kill was tested, and a five-minute major was needed to kill off due to an elbowing penalty assessed to Bobby Russell. The Swamp Rabbits thwarted the effort and followed it with a power play goal of their own, the only one in the series thus far. With 8:33 left in the second, Carter Souch, on the team's second power play, took a Sam Jardine pass on the left side of the zone and rifled a shot over Fitzpatrick's shoulder to double the Swamp Rabbits lead at 2-0 (Jardine and McKechney assisted). The Solar Bears stormed out of the gate to start the third, tying the game at two in the blink of an eye during a wild scoring exchange. Brayden Low got Orlando on the board when he deflected a Jimmy Mazza shot past Ingham at 2:09 of the third, slashing the Greenville lead to 2-1 (Mazza and Aaron Luchuk assisted). Exactly 1:36 later, Spencer Kersten maneuvered the puck in close range of the Swamp Rabbits' net and redirected it off of his body and by Ingham to square the game at 2-2 at 3:45 of the third (Darik Angeli and Alex Frye assisted). Ingham was replaced in net by Luke Richardson for the Swamp Rabbits, who didn't allow anything behind him for the remainder of the game. The switch kicked the Swamp Rabbits in gear: 51 seconds later, Carter Souch found Tanner Eberle streaking to the back of the net, resulting in a backdoor tap-in for the veteran to put Greenville ahead for good, 3-2 at 4:36 (Souch and Nick Prkusic assisted). Eberle's tally ended a scoring run of three goals between teams over 2:27 of hockey in the third. Adding insurance for Greenville was Quinn Olson, who batted the puck out of mid-air on a skilled maneuver late in the game past Fitzpatrick to push the Swamp Rabbits ahead at 4-2, bringing the game to its final score (Anthony Beauchamp and Josh McKechney assisted). In relief, Luke Richardson picked up his first career postseason win, stopping all 11 shots he saw in 16:15 of work (1-0-0). Jacob Ingham started for Greenville and turned aside 10 of 12 in 43:42 game time. The Swamp Rabbits shift the series to Orlando for Game 3 on Friday night, April 26th. Puck drop at the Kia Center is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST. SWAMP RABBITS DROP GAME 1 in OT
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spencer Kersten ends a 72-minute game to steal Game 1 from Greenville By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. – Spencer Kersten ended a marathon goalie duel to give the Orlando Solar Bears a lead in the South Division Semifinals, 1-0, over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits by a 1-0 score. Both goaltenders answered each other's energy with game-breaking save after game-breaking save. Jacob Ingham, manning the Swamp Rabbits net, stopped all seven shots he saw, while Evan Fitzpatrick, in net for the Solar Bears, returned serve with a dozen saves in the first 20 minutes. Special teams factored into the second frame, with both teams going 0-for on their respective advantages. The physical element was evident between both combatants, and the goalies again did their jobs. Fitzpatrick turned away 14 shots in period two, while Ingham denied five sent his way. By the end of the third period, both teams combined for six posts clanked: four for Swamp Rabbits, including a crossbar, and two crossbars for the Solar Bears. Orlando fired a game-high 11 shots to Ingham in the final 20 minutes, which he thwarted. Fitzpatrick matched his counterpart, staving away nine shots. One goal was all that was needed in this tight affair, and it eventually came from Spencer Kersten. With 7:38 left in the first overtime, Luke Boka worked the puck from behind his back in the right-wing corner to Kersten, who had space in the same side faceoff circle. Kersten fired his shot that squeaked through Ingham and in, ending the game after 72:22 in favor of Orlando. The 1-0 final score coincidentally gives the Solar Bears a 1-0 series lead. Jacob Ingham turned aside only one shot of 29 and chucked his way in his playoff debut (0-0-1). The 2024 South Division Champions now look to rebound against the Orlando Solar Bears in Game 2 of the South Division Semifinals. Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is tomorrow, Monday, April 22nd, and is slated for a 7:05 p.m. EST puck drop at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. ANDREW LORD NAMED ECHL COACH OF THE YEAR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fourth-year bench boss becomes first in both franchise and Greenville hockey history to receive recognition By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC—The ECHL announced today that Andrew Lord, Head Coach/General Manager of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, a proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, received the John Brophy Award as the ECHL's Coach of the Year. Lord, who finished as runner-up for the award in his first season in 2021, becomes the first coach in both franchise and Greenville professional hockey history to receive the league's honor. The John Brophy Award is presented annually to the ECHL coach who has contributed the most to his team's success. The coach is chosen by ECHL coaches, broadcasters, media relations directors, and media members. The trophy is named for John Brophy, who won a record three ECHL titles with Hampton Roads in 1991, 1992, and 1998 and was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2009. This season, Lord guided the Swamp Rabbits to a 44-23-4-1 record and 93 points in the standings, claiming the organization's first South Division Championship in over a decade with a second straight 40-win campaign. Additionally, the Swamp Rabbits earned their 30th win of the season in just 42 games, the fastest pace ever in Greenville professional hockey history. They won eight straight road games from November 14th to December 9th, a new franchise record. By holding the highest win percentage in the Eastern Conference before the Christmas break, Lord was named one of two coaches of the ECHL All-Star Team for the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic in January. "I'm extremely honored to receive this award from the ECHL. It's truly humbling," said Lord. "A recognition like this is a true testament to the organization that we have here in Greenville. From Assistant Coach Kyle Mountain, Video Coach River Pease, our support staff in Alec Muise and AJ Smith, our players, front office, and ownership, this is a collective effort and a true reflection of our culture and determination to be better both on the ice and in the community. I'm grateful to Jeff Dickerson, our owner, Todd Mackin, Tim Vieira, our President, and everyone who made this season possible. It's a true honor, and I'm thankful for the ECHL's recognition." Over four years in the Upstate, Lord has compiled a 155-94-30-9 record in 288 games, a 0.606 win percentage. He's led the Swamp Rabbits to the Kelly Cup Playoffs each season, reaching as far as the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals in his first campaign. "I couldn't be prouder of Andrew in receiving this honor from the ECHL. It is very much well deserved," said Todd Mackin, President of Spire Holdings. "It was apparent during our hiring process four years ago that Andrew had what it takes to transform our team into one of the most competitive in the entire ECHL. He tirelessly works with his staff to build a team that's worthy of representing our community and competing amongst the best in the league. Back-to-back 40-win seasons, postseason qualification each year, and over a dozen players promoted to the American Hockey League only scratches the surface of where his career trajectory will take him. We are grateful for everything he's done for our team, both on and off the ice. I look forward to watching him continue this excellence as he pursues our first Kelly Cup Championship as an organization." Before joining Greenville before the 2020-21 season, Lord led the Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League to nine separate titles, including three Conference championships, two Challenge Cup championships, two League titles, and two Playoff championships. As the winningest coach in Devils history, he led the team to a 221-75-22 record across his six seasons as head coach. Before entering the coaching ranks, Lord enjoyed a lengthy professional hockey career out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He spent ten seasons in the pro ranks, totaling 462 games. His best work as a pro was done in the EIHL, where he scored 173 points in 216 games, all with Cardiff. "Coach Lord epitomizes what it takes to be the best at his craft. The accountability and urgency he brings to our team make us better as an organization, not only on the ice, but off the ice and in the community," said Tim Vieira, Swamp Rabbits President. "Working with him is an immense privilege. His leadership of our men on the ice and our support staff has been evident from the very first day we worked together – and this recognition is a culmination of that dedication since day one. From coaching the ECHL All-Stars, to setting team records, and elevating everyone around him, there is no one more deserving of this honor." The Swamp Rabbits, 2024 South Division Champions, now look forward to the beginning of the 2024 Kelly Cup Playoffs, taking on the Orlando Solar Bears in the South Division Semifinals. Tumblr media Tumblr media

The affiliation, which began as a working partnership in 2021-22 and became an official affiliation at the start of the 2022-23 ECHL Season, will perpetuate for another two seasons into the 2025-26 campaign. "We couldn't be more excited to continue what's worked so well. We're grateful for the Los Angeles Kings for extending this partnership we have," Swamp Rabbits Head Coach/General Manager Andrew Lord stated. "Since we began our relationship, the communication from top down on hockey, players, and organizational success has been second to none, which is key in today's game in both winning and properly growing talent. SOMOZA LEADS SWAMP RABBITS TO ROAD TRIP SWEEP
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Greenville goes four-for-four on the road with a 2-1 win over Savannah; the magic number at 15 for playoffs By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits SAVANNAH, Ga. – Ethan Somoza rifled a laser at 7:53 of the second period to break a 1-1 deadlock and, coupled with Ryan Bednard's 32 saves on 33 shots, powered the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 2-1 win against the Savannah Ghost Pirates on Thursday night. The win gives the Swamp Rabbits a 40-win season for the eighth time in Greenville professional hockey history, back-to-back 40-win seasons for the second time in franchise history. It knocks their magic number to clinch a spot in the 2024 Kelly Cup Playoffs to 15 with 14 games remaining. Both teams started the game deadlocked and left it as such, with each igniting the goal lamp once. Ryan Francis put Greenville on the board first when he entered the Ghost Pirates zone down the middle, took on his defender one-on-one, and fired a shot from the high slot. His shot deflected off his assailant and fluttered by Savannah goalie Jesper Vikman, giving the Swamp Rabbits a 1-0 lead at 9:29 of the first period. Savannah deadlocked the game late in the first, with Keltie Jeri-Leon squaring things up. Off the Rush with 2:08 left in the first, Jeri-Leon sent a shot from the right circle that slipped under Swamp Rabbits net-minder Ryan Bednard, squaring the game at 1-1 (Brandon Estes had the lone assist). The game was deadlocked until the middle of the second period, when a solid breakout led the Swamp Rabbits to pull ahead. With 7:53 left in the second, Jake Stevens bumped the puck to Tanner Eberle, who slipped a cross-ice pass to Ethan Somoza, triggering a two-on-one entry. Somoza elected to toe drag and uncorked a laser past Vikman's blocker up top, putting the Swamp Rabbits in the driver's seat with a 2-1 lead (Eberle and Stevens assisted). The Swamp Rabbits locked down the third period once again defensively and weathered a late storm from Savannah. The Ghost Pirates came close a few times and had a great chance to tie the game late with a power play and extra attacker in the final 30 seconds of the game, but Greenville stood its ground and hung on for a 2-1 win, sweeping all four games of their road trip against Atlanta, Orlando, and Savannah. Ryan Bednard stopped all but one shot of 33 faced over 60 minutes, anchoring a team-leading 18th win of the season (18-9-0-0). The Swamp Rabbits return home to take on the Toledo Walleye for games at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The puck drop for game one on Friday, March 15th, is at 7:05 pm EST. The game is our annual "Faith and Family Night," presented by HIS Radio and LeafFilter, and features live music on the Furman Plaza starting at 5 pm and a celebration of faith, fellowship, and family throughout the game. Saturday's rematch is St. Patrick's Day, presented by Helacious, and features specialty St. Patrick's Day-themed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. The Swamp Rabbits complete their weekend on Sunday in Jacksonville to square off against the Icemen on Sunday, March 17th, with puck drop set for 3:05 pm EST at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. Greenville wins three of three on the road trip with one game remaining; the magic number to clinch now 17 By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits ORLANDO, Fla. – Ben Freeman broke a 1-1 deadlock late in the second period, and Jacob Ingham stopped all but one of 29 shots on net to help lead the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 2-1 win over the Orlando Solar Bears on Wednesday night. Because it came against Orlando, the win slashes the Swamp Rabbits magic number to clinch a playoff spot from 21 to 17 with 15 games remaining. Both teams left the first just as it started, deadlocked, but each team potted one goal in the first 20 minutes. Aaron Luchuck started off Orlando on the right foot 85 seconds into the game, cashing in a close-range rebound from the left past Swamp Rabbits net-minder Jacob Ingham, giving the Solar Bears an early 1-0 lead (Avery Winslow and Brayden Low assisted). Near the halfway point of the frame, Brannon McManus tied the game up for Greenville. With 9:14 gone by in the first, McManus, off of a d-zone faceoff, chipped the puck by his defender and skated up the ice uncontested. McManus fired a laser off the back bar of the net past Solar Bears goalie Evan Fitzpatrick to square the game at 1-1. Both teams skated without any additional fireworks for most of the second until Ben Freeman broke the tie late in the period. With 2:54 left, the Swamp Rabbits captain took the puck on the left wall and rifled a shot through traffic, bouncing off of an Orlando defender and into the net to give the Swamp Rabbits a 2-1 lead (Anthony Beauchamp and Ryan Francis assisted). The third period was a defensive war, with the Solar Bears hammering 13 shots on net in the last 20 minutes. The Swamp Rabbits stood tall and weathered a late push, with Fitzpatrick pulled for the extra attacker to finish a hard-earned 2-1 win. Jacob Ingham stopped all but one of 29 shots on net, winning his fifth consecutive start since February 18th (16-6-1-0). The Swamp Rabbits conclude their four-game road swing with a showdown against the Savannah Ghost Pirates tomorrow night. Puck drop for Thursday, March 7th, is slated for 7:00 p.m. EST from Enmarket Arena. Tumblr media Tumblr media
Defenseman buries the OT winner to snag all four points in Atlanta on the weekend. By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits DULUTH, Ga. – JD Greenway slipped in close range of the Atlanta Gladiators net and buried his shot at 1:48 of overtime to lead the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a come-from-behind 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Gas South Arena. The win, the team's seventh straight in Gas South Arena, gives the Swamp Rabbits a sweep of their weekend showdowns. For a fifth time in the last six games, the Swamp Rabbits scored the game's first goal and carried the advantage into the dressing room. Anthony Beauchamp matched his goal total from last season when he buried a cross-slot pass from Josh McKechney, rifling his try past the glove of Atlanta goalie Josh Boyko to give the Swamp Rabbits a 1-0 lead with 4:04 left in the first (McKechney and Brannon McManus assisted). Atlanta drew the game level in the second, ending their scoreless skid from their shutout loss the night before. At 6:41 of the second, Ryan Cranford slipped in point-blank range of the net and fired a shot over the shoulder of Swamp Rabbits net-minder Ryan Bednard, beating his glove to square the game at 1-1 (Rob Calisti and Jay Powell assisted). The Gladiators gained a lead over the Swamp Rabbits for the first time since February 17th, early in the final period. With 2:52 played, Jackson Pierson won a faceoff to the blue line to Griffin Luce, who followed shortly after with a wrist shot inside the blue line that he threaded under the bar to give Atlanta the advantage at 2-1 (Pierson had the lone assist). Down but not out, the Swamp Rabbits clawed back and drew the game level late in the third. With 5:00 remaining, Cole Donhauser swooped in from the left side of the zone and put a shot on Boyko, which he steered to the slot. Tanner Eberle skated into the rebound, situated himself, and fired home the tying strike from between the hash marks to even the game at 2-2 (Donhauser and Max Martin assisted). The remaining five minutes weren't enough to determine a winner, necessitating overtime. It took 108 seconds, but JD Greenway sealed the game for the Swamp Rabbits. Ethan Somoza switched with the defender on the right side, and Greenway strolled to the front of the net, with a man all over his back, and buried a close-range chance to give the Swamp Rabbits a 3-2 win and a weekend sweep of the Gladiators. Ryan Bednard earned the overtime win, his third of the season, stopping 27 of 29 shots in 61:48 of work (17-9-0-0). SWAMP RABBITS WIN ON MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT
Tumblr media
Greenville scores fast and hard, twice within a minute or lessBy: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp RabbitsGREENVILLE, S.C. – Carter Souch notched two goals, Tanner Eberle dealt three assists, and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits ran away with a 6-2 victory over the Rapid City Rush on “Military Appreciation Night.” The win marks a fourth straight for the Swamp Rabbits and the second in as many games in their series against the Rush this week. The Swamp Rabbits came out with the first goal for a third straight game and carried that lead into the locker room. At the tail end of a power play with 4:25 gone by in the first, Ben Freeman dropped a pass for an oncoming Brannon McManus down the right, who recognized Carter Souch wide open on the backside of the net. McManus hit him on the tape for a backdoor tap-in past Rush goalie Jason Pawloski that gave the Swamp Rabbits a 1-0 lead (McManus and Freeman assisted). The Rush squared the game early in the second, but the Swamp Rabbits struck hard and fast to maintain their lead after 40. Alex Aleardi tied the game, 1-1, at 8:52 of the second, rifling a shot over the shoulder of Swamp Rabbits net-minder Jacob Ingham in transition to even things up (Brett Gravelle and Kenton Helgesen assisted). However, 33 seconds later, Cole Donhauser completed a transition sequence up the ice with a net-front redirect of a Max Coyle pass, slipping his tap by Pawloski to put the Swamp Rabbits back on top, 2-1, at 9:25 of the second (Coyle and Austin Saint assisted). Precisely 56 seconds later, Ben Freeman created some breathing room in a net-front scramble, slamming home a loose puck to expand the Swamp Rabbits lead to 3-1 with 9:39 left in the frame (Joe Leahy and Tanner Eberle assisted). Mason McCarty ended the Swamp Rabbits scoring run as his team’s second power play expired, rifling a shot from the left side that beat Ingham to bring Rapid City within striking distance, trailing 3-2 with 5:10 left in the second period (Brett Gravelle and Logan Nelson assisted). Utilizing quick strike scoring again, the Swamp Rabbits pulled away and never looked back. On the team’s final power play of the game, Carter Souch notched his second goal, launching a wrist shot from the left side that blew past Pawloski to bring Greenville back to a two-goal lead at 4-2 with 11:01 left in the game (Tanner Eberle and Joe Leahy assisted). Precisely 22 seconds later, Austin Saint, stuck with a chaotic net-front sequence and, through a sea of humanity, edged the puck over the goal line to instantly put the Swamp Rabbits up 5-2 with 10:39 left in the game (Anthony Beauchamp and Cole Donhauser assisted). Beauchamp ended the scoring ledger on a breakaway, set up on a “Hail Mary” by Brett Kemp, to bring the game to its final score of 6-1 with 5:10 left (Kemp and Jake Stevens assisted). Jacob Ingham won his third straight start, stopping 30 of 32 shots against the Rush (14-6-1-0). The Swamp Rabbits conclude their three-game series against the Rapid City Rush this weekend, with game three set for Sunday, February 25th. The final match, slated for 3:05 p.m. at Bon Secours Wellness Arena, is “Wrestling Day,” presented by FCI Agency, featuring a pre-game VIP meet and greet with WWE Superstar R TRUTH.About the Greenville Swamp Rabbits … Acquired by Spire Sports + Entertainment (SS+E) in 2020, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits hockey team has provided family-friendly live entertainment at Bon Secours Wellness Arena since 2010.
