It had all started in Photography 101.

All he had needed was one more elective added to his schedule for the fall semester to be considered a full-time student. It was Robin who had suggested photography.

Steve had never had that great of a memory to begin with, the numerous blows to the head from juvenile high school fights certainly doing him no favors. Sometimes the amount of time it took to jog Steve’s memory surpassed the time it would’ve taken to simply tell him the story as if he hadn’t been there himself.

He was always able to grasp the memory eventually, but sometimes they were slippery in his mind.

He and Robin had found that his memory was ten times better if he had something to look at. Sometimes that was a souvenir from a trip, sometimes it was a takeout menu with his order circled in red pen, sometimes it was a physical scar on his skin from some silly injury. But most of the time it was pictures.

Steve took to taking photos of everything. His friends, his food, the landscape, a book with a pretty cover, anything he wanted to be able to remember.

The walls of his room grew to be covered with polaroids and prints, some staged, most not. Many blurry and out of focus, but in the moment just the same.

So when Robin suggested Photography 101, Steve saw an opportunity to take something he did for his own benefit and turn it into something he really enjoyed, something he was good at.

The semester was a breeze and Steve flourished under the attention of his professor. He was constantly drowning in compliments about the movement in his photos and his eye for composition.

(Robin would tell him on several occasions that she had never seen him enjoy something this much.)

By the time the semester was coming to a close, he was left with one final project. The professor had been intentionally very vague in her description of it throughout the semester, so Steve was a little on edge.

Sitting in the front row of the small classroom, he twirled the strap of his camera around his fingers while he daydreamed. The room slowly filled and the professor settled in behind her desk.

About five minutes after class was supposed to have begun Steve noticed they were all still sitting in silence. Glancing at the professor he saw her brows furrow and a frustrated lilt to her lips as she looked at her watch.

What are we waiting for?

She stood and dusted off her pants before clapping her hands together.

“Well,” she began, “I guess we can go ahead and get start–”

The door at the back of the room swung open and knocked against the wall with a resounding slam.

“Shit! Fuck! So sorry I’m late. Traffic was a bitch.”

Steve is so caught off guard by the man who just burst into the room that he barely even registers the words he’s saying.

He’is tall and all lanky muscle, dark curls and jewelry, tattoos and the smell of smoke, chains and leather and everything Steve’s not. Everything nobody in this class is.

He’s even more caught off guard when his professor laughs and pulls the man into a tight hug. There are only five other students in this class, surely he’s not the only person confused.

He keeps an arm around her shoulders as she introduces him to the group.

“Guys, this is Eddie. He’s a family friend and he’s going to be your subject for your final project.”

Steve’s own eyebrows furrow as he tries to understand how this was the project she has been keeping under wraps. They’ve had plenty of portrait sessions this semester, with models and subjects of their choice alike.

The guy, Eddie, claps a hand to his chest in a dramatic show of faux humility.

“Thank you for having me, Joyce. It's such an honor to be here.”

She smacks at his arm and carries on.

“So, Eddie is your subject and you have no parameters. The only requirement is that he is the inspiration for your shoot. This can look like a standard portrait session, this can be contemporary urban street photography, whatever you like. Eddie does not even have to be in the photo! He just has to be the inspiration for it.”

Steve's brain is already running a mile a minute, conceptualizing shots faster than he can keep up.

Dingy bars, backseats of cars, details of his eclectic style.

But one idea sticks out from the rest. As Steve lifts his eyes to Eddie once more and meets his own twinkling with mirth and smirking back at him he makes his decision.

He’s going to take his mugshot.

“I want to take your mugshot.”

They’re at the campus coffee shop. Joyce had scheduled a few hours for Eddie to meet with the other students during their class time so they could talk through their projects.

Eddie barks out a laugh. “What, man?”

Steve twirls his straw around his drink and tries not to bristle at the reaction.

“Look,” he starts, running a nervous hand through his hair, “I don’t really know where the idea originated but once I had it, it stuck. I just saw this vision of the shot in my head and it was sick, dude.”

Eddie leans back in the booth, one of his boots knocking into Steve’s foot under the table. He crosses his arms and tilts his head.

“Thought this shoot was supposed to be inspired by moi,” he says, gesturing a hand towards himself. “You saying I look like I should be in jail?”

Steve groans and puts his head in his hands. “No. I already told you I don't know where i got the idea–”

But that’s a lie isn’t it. He knows exactly where he got the idea. It was somewhere between the chains dangling from Eddie’s jeans and the handcuff belt he was wearing the day they met.

He put his hands together on the table between them. “Okay. No, I’m not saying you look like a criminal, Eddie. I’m saying I think you want to look like one.”

Eddie blinks at him for a moment before his face breaks into a slow smirk. He huffs a quiet laugh and leans closer. “Guilty as charged, Stevie. Besides, I was arrested once actually.”

Steve gawks while Eddie laughs. He is unfairly attractive when his dimples pop and Steve is going to have such a hard time holding it together behind the camera.

Steve takes his shoots very seriously. Every detail has to be perfect, even the ones not relating to the subject of the photo.

So it is wildly convenient that his professor happens to be married to the chief of police back in Hawkins.

One quick phone call from Joyce and Steve and Eddie were granted access to the booking room at the police station. You know, for the sake of realism.

Steve’s setting up his tripod while Eddie takes a chalk marker to the placard and writes up his own booking ID, a long series of random numbers with E.M at the end.

Steve would be lying if he said Eddie’s choice of clothing wasn’t exactly what he’d had in mind.

He’s wearing a ratty, old band t-shirt for some group Steve’s never heard of. There’s his usual black leather jacket and the silver chain around his neck. His ripped black jeans and fingers covered in rings and black nail polish.

It's perfect for the shoot. But Steve’s sanity is struggling.

He gets the camera and the lighting set up just as Eddie steps into place in front of the height measurement wall.

Steve puts his hands on his hips and gives instructions.

“Okay, so I know you’ve done this before–”

“Hey! It was one time!”

“So you know how this goes. We’ll do one forward and then one to each side.”

Eddie shakes out his hair and rolls his shoulders back. He holds the placard up in front of him and levels the camera with a dead-eyed stare.

He looks good.

Steve is less than shocked that he looks even better on camera.

He lines up his shot. Click.

Eddie turns to his left. Steve gets a little distracted by the line of his jaw.

Click.

He turns to the right and of course only now does Steve notice his ear piercings.

Steve takes a deep breath and focuses.

Click.

Before he can even look through his shots Eddie is dropping the placard on the desk.

He’s halfway out the door before he grabs the frame and leans back in. “One second pretty boy, I have an idea.”

He’s back before Steve snaps out of his stupor at the nickname. This time, he has a pair of handcuffs swinging from his index finger.

Steve snatches them out of his hand. “Where did you get these?”

Eddie crosses his arms over his chest and shrugs. “I know a guy.”

He rolls his eyes.

He’s already picking up the placard and setting up some detail shots when Eddie grabs his wrist and stops him. He freezes for more than one reason.

“Hey, uh. Not to step on your toes or anything, but I actually have another idea.”

Steve is about to start on his spiel about ‘not messing up his flow’ when Eddie rubs his thumb over the inside of his wrist. Gentle and reassuring.

“Do you trust me?”

Honestly Steve has no reason to trust him, he’s basically a stranger.

A pretty one. His brain supplies.

But he does. Trusts him enough to let him take Steve’s creative liberties and throw them out the window apparently.

“Yeah. Yeah, okay.”

Eddie’s smile is blinding. He turns Steve’s hand over and drops the handcuff key into it.

“Don’t lose this big boy,” he says as he snaps the cuffs around each of his own wrists.

Steve laughs, loud and shocked. He waggles his eyebrows at Eddie.

“Well, now didn’t this take a turn.”

Eddie rolls his eyes this time and lifts his hands as much as he can.

“Don’t try to sexualize my creative prowess, Steve. I am a professional.”

He nearly trips on his way back to his place in front of the wall and Steve has to hide his laugh into a cough.

Steve’s back behind the camera, hands back on his hips when he asks, “Alright, what’s the plan?”

Eddie smiles and says, “You just shoot, Harrington. I’ll do the rest.”

He leans down to finalize his camera settings and line up his shot. When he finally looks through the viewfinder his jaw drops. Because while Eddie was clearly joking about being a professional, if Steve didn’t know any better, this shot would have him believing it.

Eddie’s got both of his pinky fingers tucked in the corners of his smile, tongue bitten between his teeth. His thumbs are raised along with his middle fingers, while he’s got his nose scrunched and one eye squeezed shut. The cuffs hang right under his chin and accentuate his silver jewelry in a way Steve never would have anticipated.

Click.

The next is a close-up of the booking placard between his teeth.

His hands twisting to unlock his own cuffs.

He’s a natural, and Steve’s camera roll can attest to the fact.

It wouldn’t be until Steve was reviewing and editing the shots that he caught on. The booking ID on the placard looked long because it was. It was Eddie’s number.

Steve got an A.

He got an A, an endless stream of compliments from Joyce and a dorky hot boyfriend.

The rest of the class went the route Steve expected them to.

Dingy bars, backseats of cars, details of his eclectic style.

But Steve’s mugshot series stood leagues above the rest.

Later in their lives, when one of their friends would see the photo in Steve’s wallet they would ask when Eddie got arrested and why.

It quickly became a game between the two.

He’s been arrested in high school for selling drugs (True.)

When he was twenty for public indecency.

At twenty-two for arson.

Thirty for contract killing. This one was followed up with the claim that he was in witsec and was now going to have to change his identity and flee the country.

But the real when and why Eddie got arrested is because when he was twenty-one Joyce told him there was a nice boy in her class that she thought he should meet.

he had been there once before - the day that y/n moved into her dorm. in the time from move-in to now, austin could tell that the residents of the dorm building had truly made the place their new home. the lounges were bustling, full with post-it art on the windows and some even had a few friend groups mingling in there. he glanced at each whiteboard that was on each dorm door that he passed, even stopping to fill out a few polls that people had left on their boards. for a second, it made him wish he had gone to school instead of going straight to working after high school.

he thought over a poll that was on one of the whiteboards - one that was on cody and ted’s whiteboard. he only knew it was their room because of the nametags and multiple polaroids of the two men with y/n that was taped up on their door. he quickly counted the current count: 8 for ass, 12 for titties. truly a shocking turnout for austin - he assumed more people were ass guys nowadays. he giggled to himself as he wrote down a third option “personality” under the poll and added a tally mark… to the ass tallies.

he set the dry erase marker back in its spot just as the door opened, and austin was met face to face with a blonde man who looked like he was having the worse day possible. he feels bad for scaring the man, watching the way he jumped slightly at the sight of austin standing by his door. he figures this one is cody.

austin nodded in greeting, watching cody do the same before he turned on his heel and walked across the hall to y/n’s room, clutching the plastic bag in his hand. he could feel cody’s gaze on him, and he figured it was because he was wondering who he was and why he went straight across to y/n’s room. austin knocked on the door, feeling a shiver unpleasantly creep down his spine at cody’s stare.

y/n opened the door, and austin’s eyes widened at her tear-stained face. he shook off cody’s stare, taking a step in as soon as y/n stepped off to the side to let him in. “how long have you been crying?” he asked, quickly shutting the door behind him with the back of his foot as he leaned down to set the plastic bag down on the floor besides their feet. he shrugged off his backpack in the process, letting it drop to the floor with a thud.

he wrapped his arms around y/n’s frame, pulling her against him as he walked her over to the bed so he could sit her down. y/n wished she could cry - but she had already cried all the tears she had. she let austin sit her down on the bed, feeling his hands come to rest on her shoulders so that she wouldn’t be able to just lean forward and shy away from his gaze. “i don’t know. i don’t have any more tears now.” she mumbled.

austin let go of her shoulders and let her fall forward until her face was pressed against his lower stomach. he sighed softly, adjusting himself so that he was standing between her legs. austin wrapped his arms around her, keeping her pressed against him as he felt her arms wrap around his midsection.

“my little baby.” he cooed gently, gently patting down her hair as he stared down at the top of her head. austin rested his hand against the back of her neck, guiding her to pull her face away from his stomach so that she could look up at him. “i spent so many years loving you gently and making sure not a single tear would ever fall from these eyes.” he whispered, letting go of her neck so that he could cup her face in his hand. “now look at you, dove, crying over two silly little boys.”

“it’s my fault.” she replied, ignoring the way austin hushed her. “i should just have never gotten involved with anyone. cody and roman aren’t going to be friends now and it’s all because i couldn’t just go on dates with roman and not fuck cody. and if i wasn’t so one-dimensional, then maybe i’d realize that cody might end up catching feelings because he’s only human and-“

austin got her to quiet down by placing his hand over her mouth. he bent down until he was eye level with y/n, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to her forehead. “you’re only human, too. you’re allowed to make mistakes. you’re allowed to not be able to read another person or a situation properly. it’s not like you went into this with the goal to hurt them. you’re just a girl who is finally free from her dad’s stupid overprotective self who’s finally getting to explore herself and the outside world.” he reminded her, pulling his hand away from her mouth and resting both of his hands on her hips. austin watched as she thought over his words, eventually nodding her head in silence.

“it feels wrong, though. that everything about me is wrong. i feel like i’m so far behind everyone else. i just recently had my first kiss. i just recently lost my virginity. i still have never been in a relationship. meanwhile, everyone else is way ahead of me and it feels like i should just know exactly what i want by now but i don’t and people are getting caught in my crosshair.” she huffed out in frustration, her gaze boring into austin’s eyes. “all my friends are growing up faster than i am, and i can’t help but feel like my immaturity is hurting people because i don’t know what i’m doing”

“just because you haven’t experienced all those things up until now doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong about you, y/n.” austin mumbled, leaning forward until their foreheads were pressed together. he shut his eyes and sighed, “everyone gets hurt, dove. it’s just how life is - not because of whether or not you’re ‘grown up’ enough. you find someone, you try it out, and it either works or it doesn’t. and it doesn’t always mean officially being boyfriend-girlfriend whatever, sometimes you find someone and you’re the closest thing to dating but then it’s ripped apart.” he paused, pulling his forehead away from hers while keeping his eyes shut. it was as if austin had already known exactly how far he’d have to pull back and tilt his head up to press a kiss to the girl’s forehead. “you know that much already. it’s happened to us, hasn’t it?”

in another universe, y/n knows that the man in front of her would be her first everything. there was once a time when the two were just middle schoolers with silly little crushes on each other. everyone around them knew, especially their closest friends, but they’d never confess to each other. instead, they’d try and get the other to make the first move and confess through means of: secretly holding hands under the lunch table, austin letting y/n wear his hoodies whenever she was cold, and y/n cheering for austin at every basketball game with a large sign that she’d spend far too long making.

but this universe is cruel, and when y/n’s dad let her know that he began seeing someone else and that she had a son that was her age, y/n was ecstatic. until that faithful day that her dad invited his new girlfriend to dinner at their house and was told that her son would be joining them only to learn that her dad’s new girlfriend’s son was austin.

the two never spoke about it back then, but they knew that their crushes on each other weren’t enough for them to sabotage their parents’ relationship. from this, an odd dynamic was born between them: with austin growing ever so cocky as puberty began and y/n retracting far back into her shell. austin was the only one in their friend group to go to a different high school, simply because his mom wanted him to go to a charter school instead.

but y/n would still be the loudest person cheering for him in the bleachers. he’d still send her off to school with one of his hoodies to make sure she stayed warm. and they‘d play video games in austin’s room with their legs laid across one another. with the over-looming fact that they’d become step-siblings officially one day, austin had even taken it upon himself to joke about sleeping with y/n like those step-sibling porn videos.

but y/n wouldn’t tell him to stop and austin would only continue because he enjoyed making her flustered. but he also knew that if y/n had ever wanted to say “fuck it” and give them a shot, austin wouldn’t wait any longer.

it’d continue on until now, and although their feelings had faded away when austin began dating other girls and y/n started finding others attractive- they both knew that there’d always be something like love that’d be lying under the surface of their interactions. they didn’t need to tell each other because they already felt it long ago.

austin opened his eyes and pulled away from her completely, hearing the way her breath had hitched in her throat. “let’s drink. you’ve had a rough day.” he said, turning around and picking up the plastic bag he had dropped to the floor. he took out both bottles of hennessey and jack daniels, walking over to her desk so he could set it down. “got cups?” he asked her.

y/n pushed herself off the bed, thinking over austin’s words as she walked over to her fridge. she took out two plastic shot cups she had from the stack that sat in her basket, walking over to austin and setting the cups down on the desk.

“i feel like people are judging me because i’m a shit person for continuing on with my dance without realizing that i wouldn’t be able to not hurt one or the other.” she mumbled, feeling austin’s arm wrap around her waist so that he could pull her to his side after he had opened up the hennessey bottle.

“fuck what others think.” he hummed, pouring out the drink into the two shot cups while he rubbed circles into her side with his thumb. “they’re just as shit of a person as the next guy. no one’s perfect and as far as i’m concerned, they shouldn’t be judging you just because you’re not as experienced and you’re going into this whole thing blindly. i know you’re not the type of girl who romanticized everything and watched chick flicks so you’re actually learning from the very bottom. well, i guess besides the awkward flirting we did in middle school that sorta faded away into this whole step-sibling porn thing we got going on now.” austin pointed out, setting the bottle down and holding out a shot cup for her to take. once she grabbed it, austin grabbed his own and clanged their cups together.

“cheers.” y/n and austin mumbled before they both tossed their head backs and downed the shots.

they set down the cups fast on the table, y/n grimacing at the taste. “no chasers, baby. we’re big strong men in this household.” austin mumbled, watching in amusement as y/n’s face contorted.

“god, you’re fucking horrible. i don’t know how you expect me to take that without a chaser.” she coughed, leaning against austin as she felt his body shake with his laugh.

he pressed another kiss to the top of her head, turning so he could face her and properly pull her in for a hug. he smiled as he felt her wrap his arms around his waist and bury her face in his chest while he rested his chin atop her head. “alright, no more deep talk stuff, okay? let me get this straight to you. you started a fight between two friends who are certainly not going to be friends anymore because you lead the both of them on.“ he could feel her pull her head back to talk back at him, but he raised a hand to press against the back of her head and keep her face pressed against his chest. “but you’re only human. you make mistakes and that’s okay, you just have to learn from them. but tonight, let’s make a few more mistakes and get so drunk that you’ll have to skip classes.” he continued softly.

he didn’t get an immediate reply and austin knew that the girl was thinking over his words. he smoothed out her hair as he shifted his weight from one foot to the other to gently sway her.

“okay.” she mumbled against his chest, pushing back against his hand so that she could look up at him. “i missed you, austin.” she whispered softly, watching as a small smile crept up on austin’s face.

“i know.” he replied, unwrapping his arms from around her so that he could reach for their shot cups again. he handed y/n her cup before grabbing the open bottle, pouring another shot into both of their cups. “i missed you too, baby. now, let’s drink, turn on your laptop, and sing the entirety of the let it shine soundtrack.” he responded, watching the way y/n’s mood visibly lifted as they clanged their cups together before tossing their heads back and feeling the alcohol burn down their throats.

alexa nikolas (nicole on zoey 101) said that when she was 12/13 years old working on zoey 101, she would do wardrobe fittings and there was a curtain she would change behind and dan schneider (creator of the show and many other shows on nickelodeon) would be in the exact same room and when alexa would show him the outfit she was in and the person in charge of wardrobe took a polaroid of the outfits, dan would ask for the polaroids… of a 12/13 year old child! 🤮 alexa said when she went on to do other shows, such as the walking dead and mad men, when she did wardrobe fittings she asked doesn’t the creator/showrunner need to be here and explained what happened on zoey 101 and the wardrobe people on those shows would be like, no that is absolutely not normal.

alexa also said she was always in ridiculously short skirts on zoey 101 for her character and had to wear biker shorts underneath and they would even have to cut the shorts because they were too long

she also called out all the creepy, fetish type scenes in all of dan’s shows 🤮

talking about reddie, i remember you saying eddie drives a gtr and sai said ren also drives a corvette (i'm ignoring his motorcycle rn lol). do they ever meet cute at traffic stops? go to local car meetups? do they race diva and teo down the 101? do they have the glove box to themselves like the passenger princesses they are?

and do eddie and diva have custom licence plates? any specific decals for their cars like tinted windows, color wraps or seat covers? i think diva would be the type to have custom star shaped exhaust pipes.

CAR QUESTIONS? Omg… apologies if this is all over the place, my thoughts are messy

Eddie likes cars but he isn’t much of a social person so he wouldn’t go to any car meets, and although he knows how to race, he doesn’t really race much but will if Diva or Ren drags him to one!!

But most definitely has a princess compartment for Ren, but sadly Ren doesn’t trust Eddie to drive for some reason unknown (Eddie never bothers to asks, but it is a bit odd when they’re taking HIS car).

Eddie doesn’t have a custom plate but Diva most definitely!! It’s probably DIVASTAR with a star replacing the i (is this possible? Idk but I think it should be) AND YOURE 100% RIGHT SHED HAVE A STAR EXHUAST

Eddie’s car is squeaky clean always, they both take good care of their cars! Eddie probably doesn’t do much to his car, maybe a few moderations just for functionality. Diva is the car girl that decorates her inside and out. Diva has two cars, one her grandpa gifted her and the other she got herself which is shimmery pink (OBVI).

Diva def has like little hello kitty plushies hanging on her rear mirror and some other plushies along the dash board or in the back. And sometimes she puts them in the seats with their seatbelts on. She also has her own compartment with emergency feminine products and makeup.

I think if Eddie really was going to have some form of decorations? Probably some Polaroids of his loved ones on his dashboard but he’s bland 🩵 both twins also have their windows tinted!! A bit too dark… like 35% (if I remember, the percentage is how much light can go through).

Oh oh and Diva def has rbg lights somewhere. And her headlights and taillights are stars 😼

Can i just. That whole jaylex dynamic. But the addition of Tim into it. They all hang out one weekend, and then start teasing hints of this fucked up game they like to play sometimes. Getting Tim both freaked out and interested by it. He thinks Jay and Alex are both like, super fucked in the head to think chasing each other around with knives is fun (they havent told him that each time ends with fucking crazy sex), but Tim can also admit that the idea of maybe getting in on that is like. Just obviously super fucking hot. Maybe he tags along the next, and instead of just having a knife and zipties, he’s got a whole fucking horror movie mask to wear. Which gets Alex hard pretty much immediately.

theyre all sitting around drinking and talking over the movie they put on and jay n alex keep making weird little "jokes" abt their weekend plans n whatever and tims like haha good bit guys (???) and eventually jays pulling out the polaroid in the back of his wallet of alex hogtied in the woods like lol no we're serious. yk how ppl pay to get kidnapped?

and tims just kinda curious. in a normal way. theyre the weirdos here hes just wondering abt the logistics and such. obviously. and when they invite him to come along next time sure he agrees but its not that he wants to he just. hes just. yk. okay maybe somewhere around when he opened a fourth beer and alex lost the coin toss for whos gonna play victim this weekend tims started to think abt it. about what it would feel like. hunting a person. the thrill of the chase, the rush of victory when theyre caught and at your mercy. (tim likes it more than he should. cant help but think they have to be both leaving out the part where this is a sex thing, right? theres no way alexs tipsy psych 101 bullshit abt catharsis and being a mammal and whatever was the whole story. right?)

so he digs his old buck knife out from when he was living alone and paranoid as hell and finds the mask he wore to brians halloween party last year while hes there (remembers how alex looked at him, looked at the screen during the first halloween movie, decides he'll wear it) and takes his ass down to the woods and discovers hes really fucking good at tracking alexs footsteps in the dark, keeping silent as he follows. at getting up behind him soundlessly and pressing the knife gently to his kidney, whispering for him to hold still if he knows whats good for him before he whistles for jay. pulling alex against his chest to lift up his shirt and drag the blade over his bare skin, asking if alex is really hard or the lights playing tricks on him.

he gets his answer after jay appears out of the dark, after tims forced alex down in the dirt and held him still for jay to get a ziptie around his wrists and mock him for struggling so much when he knows by now its just gonna get him more hurt in the end. jays feeling him up, pretending to check him for weapons, and when he grabs alexs crotch he laughs, calls him a sick fuck. asks tim if he wants to have a little fun with him before they kill him. since the little sluts practically begging for it.

One month until the wedding! Yesterday, we had our “Engagement Photos” taken. I wondered if Caleb would even show up in pictures but he told me they just had to be polaroids, oddly enough. He said even ghosts show up on them. He explained that digital cameras are different, especially with ghosts – because they can manipulate them. It was kind of a creepy lesson on the supernatural.

Actually, it was kind of cool doing our photos with just a plain polaroid camera. The photographer is someone Caleb knows and once I got into just focusing on Caleb, it was easy.

We got the pictures back today and I love them!

#im about to finish my uni stuff and then i will start working on a super long (haha) new fic that i'm very excited about and that hopefully

It's Ciri's sixteenth birthday when she asks her Dad for a polaroid camera. Geralt raises an eyebrow at her, the sentence "I'm not a stupid hipster, Daaaad!" engraved in his mind. But it's her birthday, so he can't really say no, can he?

"If you really want one," he says, "then go up to the attic and look through your Mom's highschool boxes. You can have hers."

Ciri's eyes widen in wonder. She doesn't remember much about her parents, most of it comes from stories other people told her. Often being told how much she resembles her mother, Ciri has started to mimic Pavetta - hoping to connect with her in some way.

So,

Ciri spends her morning in the attic. Sitting on the floor and carefully going through some of the boxes that are labeled "Pavetta - senior year". There's a lot of memories hidden in cardboard treasure chests and she takes her time to enjoy a bit of her Mom's life.

She finds the camera. It's a charming old thing, safely put away in a brightly colored shoulder bag that is adorned with stickers and pins and doodles. It's well loved.

She plays around with it for a bit and to her joy it still works. Then she notices the side pocket on the bag where a little stack of photos must've gone unnoticed. Ciri carefully pulls the pictures out and her heart flutters with excitement as she sees her Mom wildly grinning at her, Ciri's father Duny, standing in the background, talking to somebody.

Flipping through the photos she gets a great inside of what her Mom's highschool time must've been like. The best thing about the find, though, are the pictures Pavetta took of Geralt. She knows Pavetta, Geralt and two other friends were a band in highschool, but getting to see it is a whole new experience. To her surprise, her Dad looks kind of cool behind a set of drums.

And then she sees it. Her eyes grow huge and in disbelief she pulls the photo closer to her head. It's a band picture. Her Mom, her father, her Dad, another girl and an awfully familiar face grin back at her.

Ciri does what every teenager would have done. She pulls out her phone and takes a picture of the polaroid, posts it online with the caption

"so apparently my Mom was in a band with leadsinger (at)JaskiertheBard"

Her post goes viral over night. A few days later her favorite singer and songwriter has sent her a chat request.

Ciri accepts.

Jaskier walking through a market place past a pen where a bunch of horses for sale are kept. A horse neighs. Jaskier stops, turns around with a grimace on his face and looks at a chestnut mare. "Roach?" Roach nods. "He's lying in a ditch somewhere, right?" Another nod. Melitele above that horse has always been too smart for his own comfort. "I will have to steal you back now, I guess?" Roach neigs rather dramatically and Jaskier sighs. So much for a calm evening. A few paces behind the guy who sells the (stolen) horses backs away, suddenly having decided that that particular mare is not worth the trouble.

So Jaskier, completely shitfaced, is sitting somewhere on the dirty floor near a tavern in Oxenfurt, when he meets Vesemir for the first time.

He instantly recognizes the old witcher and loudly calls him over, something along the lines of "Hey! Hey you- you, wolf! Papa wolf! Yeah, come on, I need to have a word with you about your son. The- the stupid one-"

Vesemir is obviously not amused, but he comes over nonetheless because for some reason that drunk kid knows him.

Then, Jaskier proceeds to ramble on about Geralt and it gets very close to trash talk, but Vesemir keeps his cool and reads in between the lines. What he finds out is this: Geralt - who up to this point had been his favorite - had somehow managed to break this poor kid's heart, not once, not twice but "at least five times". Said kid had apparently "spent more than half of his life" following his son like a lost puppy. He mumbles something about elves and djinns and then tells this elaborate tale of a golden dragon. "And then he left me on a fucking mountain!" Vesemir for his part would have not believed any of this, if the name Yennefer hadn't fallen. Many of the unreasonable things Geralt does are related to Yennefer.

The old witcher then takes a closer look at the sod on the floor and oh yes, didn't Geralt say something about a bard?

Then suddenly the kid stops mid sentence as if remembering something important. He waves at one of the other young men and loudly asks "Oi Mikael, is there- is there class tomorrow!?" Vesemir doesn't show it but he's kind of shocked. The drunk kid is clearly a student at the Academy, way too young to be traveling with a witcher. What ln earth is Geralt thinking?!

When the other man, for some reason looking as shocked as Vesemir feels, answers the kid's question with "yes", the bardling seems to sober up by a lot. He staggers up, wishes Vesemir a good night and starts to stumble towards Oxenfurt Academy, quickly followed by the other student.

The last thing Vesemir hears before they walk out of side is how the student asks the bard "Does that mean we won't have to write that test tomorrow, professor?"

Professor. Vesemir needs a break.

🌟 Are you engaged/would you get engaged? Describe/Show a picture of your ring. we aren't.. not yet anyway :))) we've been together for less than a year and it feels really early to make that move but i think we both definitely think about it anyway.. i feel like he'd be the one to propose and i'm sure he'd plan something big and special

🌟 Are you married/would you get married? Describe/Show the aesthetic of your wedding. nope, and i'm not sure! personally i'm not the biggest fan of marriage, specifically the whole performative ceremony thing ?? in theory it's very cute but the idea of being in front of people while i'm saying my vows and talking so intimately to him is Scary to me.. but if we get married then i would want it to be a very small gathering of just close friends/family, not really fancy at all.

🌟 What does your ideal home look like together? eclectic, warm, cozy, lots of neutral shades with pops of color thrown in, accent walls with vintage wood paneling, healthy and thriving plants everywhere, LOTS of natural sunlight, it's tidy but still full of little knick knacks that we've collected over the years.. there's a constant feeling of comfort and safety, it smells Amazing all the time despite the pets, several polaroids that we've taken are lining the shelves in frames, little sticky-note love notes are still hanging around in various hiding places either because they've been forgotten or we don't like to throw them away, there's always a record playing in the living room.. it's literally perfect

🌟 Do you have/want kids? If not, would you have/want pets? we do Not want kids LOL... we do, however, have/want pets! currently we have just his bearded dragon but we'd love to get a cat, and maybe a couple geckos and a snake 🥺 we love animals so so so much

🌟 If you have/want kids or pets, how would you name them? diego's beardie is lovingly named anguirus, i've already told him that if/when we get a cat its name will be oliver.. we don't know on the others, we figure a name will present itself to us eventually when we get a new pet

🌟 If you could give advice to yourselves when you started, what would you say to each other? get over yourselves HFKLDSHGDS.. for me: calm down, trust your heart this time, let him in and allow yourself to fall for him because the faster you do the quicker you'll be in his arms 🥰 and for him: go easy, don't overwhelm her with your desires, be Patient and Understanding, things will turn out just fine

🌟 What do you look forward to the most in the future of this relationship? as of right now (december 1st '22) i'm looking forward to new years :)) also our birthdays, though his is pretty far away LOL.. basically i guess i'm excited to go through special days of the year with him

🌟 How long do you think you’ll be together? How long do you want to be together? ✨forever✨ ... who knows! i like to think we're in it for the long haul, it's extremely rare that i develop feelings for someone so there's definitely something very special and long-lasting here

🌟 Do you think you’ll continue to self-ship with them for a while? y e s LOL i anticipate it going on for a while, i had a previous f/o that i essentially self-shipped with for around 5 or 6 years (the self-ship community was not as open and visible back then as it is now) and he was not nearly as fleshed out as diego is in my mind now.. honestly this is The Most i've ever felt for a fictional character 🥺 he is so stinkin special to me
