Tenoch Huerta and the racism in Mexico that he wants to be known about: a little bit of "Orgullo Prieto"

For a few weeks Tenoch Huerta has been a trend on different social networks (which makes me proud, certainly. Hollywood finally makes the right people famous 👏) thanks to his portrayal of Namor in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" (I already read all your fics, they're amazing by the way).

But today I want to talk about something else, beyond his sexy back, his great performance as Namor and his countless and exotic sexual fetishes: his first book, in which he exposes, without stuttering, racism in Mexico: "Orgullo Prieto".

For those who don't know, Tenoch is an actor who for some time has turned his privileged speaker into a continuous platform against racism in Mexico.

This year, a few months before the premiere of his most recent film, Tenoch gave us this beauty, where, based on reflections, anecdotes, questions, concepts and ideas, he covers this topic, in an attempt to answer the question: of what we talk when we talk about...?

I had the opportunity to read a little of this book, which from the first page captivated me. You may not believe me, but throughout the entire reading I was smiling. Not because Tenoch was telling a story that made me happy or saying something funny, but because every word this man wrote, every word from which I learned something new. It left me floored. As part of Mexican society, reading this book (even if it was only a small part of it) made me realize the impact that racism had and has on my life and those around me. It made me question the origin of every decision I've made in the past and many of them come from the same root: racism, which without realizing it, was instilled in me since I was a child.

Leaving my sentimental speech behind, I would like to share with you small parts of—what I read from—this book, phrases and stories that made me think, get out of my comfort zone and say: "Verga, estamos bien jodidotes".

"racism exists in everything: in every governmental, social, private, cultural institution and even in language. If we are part of this society and participate in all of the above, without needing to be violent or actively aggressor , whether we want to realize it or not, we are all racists. You and me too. Why? Because we were trained in it and it conditioned us, and because we ignore it for centuries so as not to speak openly and on a daily basis about the subject."

"It was too tired and painful. (He was talking about his attempt to belong to the whiteness) That attempt to assimilate me, to mix myself, cost me a lot. Little by little I came back to myself, but there is something I still can not recover from: I lost my linguistic identity, and I think forever. I stopped sounding like myself, like I sounded all my life. I stopped sounding like my childhood, like my friends, like my family. Years after having lost or forgotten this part of my identity, I took a voice workshop where the teacher said: "The eyes are the mirror of the soul, but the voice is the mirror of intimacy". I had lost it: I had lost myself. I was adrift for a few years and made a number of stupid things that separated me from my true and original being."

"I remember when, as a child, a teacher asked me if my parents weren't ashamed for giving me a dog's name. She was Mexican, brown like me, and part of the same population group. Without knowing it, with that question, she was denying our roots, our identity. She did it because she surely grew up hearing (also at school, the same from monographs or history books full of Europhile biases) that our ancestors were savages and that Europeans were an "advanced" civilization, just because they were cool, because they were splendid, They came to save us from an almost animal life. We must thank them for our "humanization" or something like that. Was it really like that? Were the Mesoamerican peoples the true savages?"

"I remember one of my girlfriends, brown girl, who always sought shade or avoided sunbathing at all costs because "it burned her face". She didn't say it because she was worried about getting skin cancer, but because she didn't want it to darken. She even told me that it was to avoid stains. She searched for all possible euphemisms to turn around the real reason: not to get "more dark". It is clear to me that she, like others, surely grew up hearing that the ideal way to be beautiful was to aspire to be white and that if you are dark, you have to avoid being even more so. They are aggressions that mark us."

"What happens then with those who deny racism in their country? Being racist is a "bad" thing. So, first: no one comes off as racist because no one wants to be the bad guy. Second: since they do not see themselves in that situation, riding a horse burning crosses, it means that they are not racist. It would be like saying that men who commit gender violence are only those who have reached the point of beating or murdering a woman. Seen like this, if I don't wear the cone, I'm not a racist. Mistake."

Let me explain the situation: most of haters are on twitter. they're a bunch of shit that don't take the time to listen to him before attacking him with bullshit. They attack him with pure hatred and racism and that has been the case for a long time, however everything became intense since he made it public that he was with the president to watch a simple soccer game that took place in the World Cup. Everything exploded with the rebozo/cape issue; the media invented that the complaint was against him when in reality it was against a brand and the group to which he belongs. People blame him for things he didn't do but no one knew about the bullying towards his family until today when he made it public. Really this week has been very stressful and frustrating for him, just take a look at his twitter and see the amount of hate he receives even from "influential" people that only has waiting for a minimun mistake from him. He calls out the press for the lack of rigurosity when writing the news about the rebozo.

He talks about how now that his fame has grown, the attacks have too.

MER replies: "The one that in her Festival Poder Prieto asked more artesans to go free at los Pinos (because they aren't famous, they're making them a favor)

When asked "why is Tenoch a sexual offender and predator?" she replies "because he is, why else?"

When asked if Tenoch had sexually assaulted her, she replies "yes, and many more".

She says that Poder Prieto protects the sexual offender and predator Tenoch Huerta. She also states they went to look for her at a concert so there wouldn't be any polemics because of his Marvel movie (and she tags Marvel Latam).

She also tells Maya Zapata directly "I'm not playing".

She says that Tenoch sleeps around with women in Poder Prieto and a lot of them do it because they want to advance in the movie industry.

She's confronted about the accusations made by different sources about the way her family lived in Oaxaca (these are supported by legal papers). Says those are "paid campaigns" by Vera Carrizal (her attacker) so they can silence her.

Makes a thread. In it, she says "They are not unsubstantiated accusations. Rape is not fiction and is substantiated."

Takes her three hours to post the first "proof".

It's an anon

The anon accuses him of stealthing. There's no proof because the anon deleted everything.

Tenoch exits his movie Fiesta en la Madriguera. He sends a statement to the news. He mentions he will be taking legal action.

in these screenshots we learn that she might have accused tenoch of stealthing because a woman called raciel rivas out and tenoch dismissed it, saying he does it too. she had this message since june 12th, and if you remember, she issued her statement on june 15th.

Raciel Rivas denies what MER said, therefore, tenoch being there saying those things never happened either.

A few comments about it:

So far, she hasn't been able to prove that he has sexually assaulted, or r*ped a woman.

She has blocked most of tenoch's fans and journalists who approached her to talk about the topic.

Statements made by her about her mental health have resurfaced (here).

A lot of people from Oaxaca have spoken up about what happened there and her connection to murat, she blocks them.

Openly speaks out about racist typecasting & colorism in both Mexico and in Hollywood

Gave a TED Talk about Racism, then created a multi-video series to expand on the topic.

Calls out ‘Whitexicans’ (both online and in his video series) for their disconnect from the reality of racism, colorism, and associate classism within Mexican society. 

Spoke out against the massive development project to build a 950-mile rail line through the rainforest to bring tourists to Mayan archeological sites. Rightfully called it a “Colonialist Project” and said that the Mayan people should be making the decisions about it themselves (rather than the wealthy elite).

Basically says exactly what he thinks about people’s behavior, and doesn’t give a shit about playing nice in the entertainment industry. 

Co-Founded a group to raise awareness about racism, Poder Prieto. (Tenoch is apparently so outspoken, the organization has asked him to cool it a little.... but he hasn’t, what a king).

I remember back when Tenoch Huerta was early announced as Namor how excited I was for the casting, specially since I knew Tenoch way before for his other works, and I literally went to my mom only to express how happy I was, and how I KNEW that the moment we started to see content of him, that when the movie came out, the thirst and ovation over Tenoch was going to be IMMENSE. I could see how even white folks would love and praise his work, even tho here in Mexico a lot of people made fun of him, when he's Mexican too, and even doubted him.

So, as you could already see, I was right. He proved all of those people who doubted him wrong, and nothing makes me happier. Seeing Tenoch's work being praised and loved, how he's the (not) white boy of the fucking month. He deserves all that and more, he's a legend and the impact he's causing amongst brown, indigenous and Mexican people is unbelievable.

And I know my English might be trash, but I felt in the need to express my happiness and gratitude over him in a language I knew most of people understand, because I think he deserves to be praised and I want people to know what he means to me, to us.

I’m honestly confused about the Tenoch situation.

I'm gonna sum it up and if you need more info just go through my Tenoch Huerta tag

A few days ago, Elena Rios, (a survivor of an acid attack/attempted femicide from her politician ex boyfriend who hired someone to attack her in 2019, is an advocate for laws to protect women and a saxophonist) calls out Poder Prieto on twitter (a company that is supposed to promote the fight against racism that she and Tenoch were a part of in years past but are both no longer a part of/have distanced themselves from it) for using her music/work in a podcast that she did not authorize and was not paid for, and in that tweet also claims that Tenoch is a Sexual Predator, and then goes on to claim he assaulted her and many others and that Poder Prieto covered it up because Tenoch is a Big Celebrity.

Poder Prietro replies that they didn't use her work. However this company is shady because earlier in the year they stole credit of textile art (a cape) from an indigenous artist lady and then tried for months to discredit her and claim she was lying about making the cape. The truth came out, the woman was credited by Tenoch when he finally found out what happened and he made amends with her even though he didn't know what was going on but wanted to make things right. So again, both Tenoch and Elena have left/distanced themselves from this company.

Elena spent days repeating this accusation and claiming she had more to say but that she was afraid to say it because Tenoch is a Big Celebrity. Multiple journalists reached out to her to get more details and she blocks them, many people who ask her to post something more concrete or evidence or even details of an incident she ignores or blocks them. She says she will post more when she is ready. She later deletes the tweet where she specifically said that Tenoch assaulted her and many others.

The internet/media goes insane, people take sides, both Tenoch and Elena get massive amounts of hate/death threats and insults. Racists are having a field day and people already assume that Tenoch is an abuser.

Tenoch takes a couple days to respond in a formal post on Instagram stating that he and Elena were once a couple who had a consensual loving relationship that ended a year ago and that after that she had begun misrepresenting their relationship to their mutual friends and in private. Tenoch also says he has people who knew/witnessed them during their time as a couple who could back him up that it was not an abusive relationship. And that he has legal personal who he hired a few months ago because of her claims. This means whatever this was, was a private dispute before Elena posted it on twitter. Elena did not once mention that she and Tenoch were in a relationship or that they broke up before the publicity of the Wakanda Forever movie.

Elena responds that she cannot respond to Tenoch's statement because she is busy promoting laws to protect women from abusers like him and his fans who sent her death threats. The only screenshots of messages she posted were of random fans death/hate messages. She does not once post anything specific about her claims.

This is now a "he said, she said" situation, and until Elena posts something official or presents evidence, or whatever, then there is no news. However because this is the internet, people either believe Tenoch or Elena and think the other is a liar, meanwhile the racist people who hated Tenoch and have tried for years to destroy his career are using this against him. No other women have come forward with any claims of abuse by Tenoch as of yet.

This is the best news I have heard with regards to Tenoch. Really taking that fight against racism and implementing solutions out of it. In addition to the photograph below, the tweet continues -- "he says he's close to opening his own production studio to help people tell their own stories as well."

Also happy he's stepping back from Poder Prieto. Really happy. I hope he gets genuine people who are as sincere and passionate as him in this fight.
