SORRY sorry. i need a minute. i just remembered hob was never really written originally to fall in love, and that at the same time that in-fiction hob was taken off guard by what he began to feel for rue, at-table brennan himself had been blindsided by what was unfolding. hob was meant to be a plothound. a benevolent busybody. a sleuth. for hob's writer, his creator and god, love was never considered as a part of his story, and yet it came to him anyway. and yet it slipped in through the space between the periods in his name. and yet it found him in the dark cold of his tent and held him in warm arms. k.p. hob is a character who, pulled gently by the hand of another, stumbles, falls, and then runs away from the future that had been imagined for him. what a thing a story can be when it's cracked open by love.

in light of the new d20 season (burrow's end!!), i have updated the spreadsheet & will be updating it as class info comes out. by god i gave myself homework to do.

anyways, here's the updates:

brennan is now at 18/20 seasons, playing in 4, three of which were aabria's sidequests. i'm glad he got a break from gming for a bit. now he's just a wee stoat for a while.

siobhan, joining ally and zac with 9 total seasons! it's so fun to see her in the sidequests--i can't wait to see where she goes with this one. i'm also just giggling at the fact that in some of the clips she just has a leaf in her hair. just sticking out the top.

aabria, still at the top of the guest list now with 6 seasons under her belt, gming 3 of those. now, since we've been told that the next ih season will likely by starting late Q4/early Q1, murph will be up to eight. however, if they stick to a similar sidequest schedule and he doesn't join, aabria may well overtake him next year. she's already very close.

erika, up to 5 seasons now! she's back again folks! i'm excited to see if he sticks to the magic or if he takes a dip into martial this season. as noted previously they've had 2 druids, an emo disney princess mage, and a shadow sorcerer vampire before; where will they go from here?

izzy, joining the three cree ranks, with rekha shankar and matt mercer. they've put her 1) in the plothound seat next to aabria, 2) next to erika, and 3) across from brennan. oh boy get ready people. she's back.

and joining the dome for the first time we have jasper william cartwright and rashawn nadine scott! after the schedule was posted for this week i knew it was likely they were teasing rashawn for this season, but i could not have predicted jasper! from the trailer it seems they're both following the trend of intense makeup & hair--very fun to see.

Fic rec time! Since we're talking about how trans men are portrayed in fic, Plothound does trans men in a way I haven't seen anywhere else.

His characters tend to be very masculine with typically male phsyiques, no boobs (or mention of having had boobs), and masculine cunts. He describes trans junk in a way that clearly reflects the IRL results of HRT on normal human junk, but it's just "here is a man's cunt, it's hot" and doesn't really go on about HRT or the magical equivalent thereof. We're left to assume that his characters have medically transitioned, but the fics are about men having sex, not about transitioning.

One of your anons pointed out that he likes it "when trans men are written as if their bodies are normal male bodies", and Plothound might be right up his alley.

Do note that Plothound's works cater to some very specific kinks -- I found him when I searched AO3 for "pear of anguish", and that's just the tip of the iceberg; he writes lots of noncon, painplay, and magical torture, and he's got a kink for realistic plate armor -- and is definitely not for everyone, and he writes more original works than fanfic, but if you like your trans men as trans men rathe than trans men, and you like your fic to focus on sexy bodies instead of the social aspects of transition, you'll probably enjoy Plothound.

ur the only person ive ever seen talk about kpwuvvy in any capacity + ive been thinking about wuvvy talking abt seducing lords of the wings to make them lose their wager so. au where wuvvy seduces hob to distract and keep him away from rue but of course ends up pitying him and seeing herself in him

hello good afternoon i spent my entire commute thinking about this and my morning shift writing a circle around it. first of all holy shit? i love this, i do think wuvvy has an interesting relationship to her body in acofaf and the seduction game is clearly one she'll participate in. it's a very interesting intersection of the regency and fey genres, right, bc the consequences are very different in both.

ive really been chewing on that moment in ep3, with the challenge to a duel, and i do think this is the moment it could happen if it were to happen -- wuvvy's protective instincts are engaged, she's thinking about hob as a political enemy, she's hurt and wants to avenge those hurt feelings, and she believes him indifferent to rue so would not think that she's getting in the way of rue's happiness by engaging with him. the difference between the duel and the glamour is, well, whether she uses her mother tongue (the champion's discourse, the duel) or whether she translates her intentions into the language she has learned from the court of wonder ("she's getting better at her glamours").

haven't cracked how she would approach hob, but i think that he would mistrust the advance no matter what. a fey he's never met taking an interest in him? a fey whose magic reeks of enchantment? he would have to assume it's related to the mission, and i think brennan would engage with it from the plothound angle rather than "the hookable part", the part of him that's empty. at least at first. the thing about rue that caught him in the woods was their vulnerability, their apparent desire for him that they suppressed, a moment of recognition to see someone else trapped in the role they play.

ofc, bc wuvvy and hob think so similarly, all that is what she would see in him. she would pity him. im resisting the urge to plot this out, but i think it would begin to shift after rue's reveal in ep4, a moment where wuvvy is now looking for hob, looking to see how he will react to their true form and whether she will have to hate him after all. instead she would see his respect and his understanding. and for the first time i think she would see what he has really been looking for in rue, why he resisted her courting him, what he wants.

from there, i think she would start trying to genuinely get close to him, and we know that hob can and will fall for those who are good to him. he's capable of believing that anything is possible, if someone shows him affection; judging by his canon relationships, he can't help it. hand on his stupid heart & all that. so he's falling for a glamoured wuvvy, who, like rue, would try to change his perspective on the goblin court. her model for that would be pretty different -- less "you were used [...] take care of yourself, pray, protect yourself," because that's something wuvvy has never told herself, but rather "devotion does not have to mean being wielded for another person's interests. you have a choice in your allegiance, and you can swear yourself to what makes you happy."

my reading of kpvvy is one of mutual admiration and respect, and a bittersweet feeling that you've met someone just like you who somehow has everything you want. from a text i sent my bestie abt the cyrano au!kpvvy: "wuvvy sees a person who has no one to be themselves with and goes 'anyone gonna stand right next to them' and not wait for an answer." "with hob it's [...] like fully girl i don't know if i want you or if i wanna be you. cuz shes presenting him with this model of honor and service that like, works? in a way his doesnt? shes not miserable all the time holy shit?" -- they are SO similar that it's less of the "run away with me" love you get with kprue and the "i would do anything for you" that you get with ruevvy, it's "here are all my strengths and weaknesses in another person, and finally i can see that they all stem from the same part of me, which is also a part of them." not trying to be saved by each other, not trying to save each other, just trying to get as close to the other as they can get.

consequences for the seduction game arise, regency-style, when the goblin court is unable to secure a match for hob bc he has been seen so often in intimate settings with a fey from the court of wonder, and as for the fey angle. the major point of conflict there is the glamour, since hob hates lying and being lied to, and it's more about the betrayal and the fallout of acting on the intensity of emotions.

given canon, i have no reason to believe this wouldn't resolve in a happy ending, bc hob was able to break his engagement and forgive rue for concealing their role as saboteur from him -- except that there's no way, in this au, that rue isn't falling for wuvvy as well. and the thing that hob allows himself to leave the goblin court for is rue's open confession of love and care. would wuvvy offer him that if she finally has rue's attention? i don't know! i would LOVE to know what you were thinking in proposing the au, though, bc i have a feeling this mini-essay wasn't quite it. sorry this is so stupid long btw : ) if u are still here just know that i do love kpvvy i just cant imagine any pairing in this world for long without eventually arriving at the triad.

i have finally found the time to watch through the entirety of a court of fey and flowers and it has left me clawing the walls

a few thoughts, here and below the cut:

aabria is honestly one of my favorite gms to watch work. like, literally watch, i am 95% podcasts for my actual play media, but the visual elements of her games (esp. her npc facial expressions & acting choices) are so compelling. every damn time wuvvy looked at rue i died.

never not gonna be impressed with how smoothly this team integrated dnd combat & magic & skill checks with the good society framework to make a compelling, weighty, primarily social game. the unique tokens! (the significance to burning them!) the many pvp insight/deception checks over sighs and glances!!

brennan being an eternal gm is a crime, hob is The Most Character

like, picture me taking that character art of hob, printing it out, folding it up, and eating it. love him.

he’s a self-loathing emotionally obtuse plothound who claims to be bad with words but gives The Most Austen-style heart-wrenchingly vulnerable speeches. who else is doing it like him.

(seriously, if you’ve got regency media recs with hob-alike MCs I Want Them)

i am imagining some bonkers child creation magic — like, cabbage patch If You Want One It Will Grow stuff, genetics and gametes need not be involved stuff — that gives hob and rue an enormous passel of kids to love on and Treat Right, including at least one Owl With Bug Wings and two or three Literal Bears.

also picturing atla level confusion when the first one of those bears comes along. “just a bear?” “not a bugbear, not an owlbear, not a bugowlbear. just a bear.” “…this kid is weird.” “yeah, but we’re gonna love them like mad anyway right?” “oh yeah, of course, i’m just saying!”

deeply shocked andhera was able to sit through that detect thoughts at the tailor shop scene without blurting out SOMETHING, given his tendencies towards blurting out everything in other moments.

but like. imagine.

hob: the k stands for knickolas!!

rue: i love him.

andhera: oh shit, for real?! you love him for real??

disastrous. andhera fails to keep his mouth shut, four wounded two dead. (rip buddy, you were a real one)

otoh. now i’m imagining a fun little trivia game at rue’s nearlywed shower with questions like “where did they meet” and “who asked whom” that give them an excuse to retell all of these cute stories about their relationship, and one question is “when did rue first realize they loved hob?”

the answer is supposed to be after they danced all night at the masquerade, because rue thinks it’s fine to lie a little for the Romance of it all, but andhera’s like “oh, i remember that! it was when hob told them what the k in k.p. stands for!”

and he’s very :D satisfied with himself for winning his team a point! not noticing rue and hob’s very complex face journeys as they silently have a Conversation about this.

most shocking moment for me, a person who saw a fair number of acofaf gifs on my dash last fall: chirp marriage & child reveal, no question. the cast around her reacting is also very good, but the twist in itself was honestly so unexpected! and it works fantastically to give the lords of the wing motivation to join the larger plot on Our Heroes’ Side, i thought that was very smartly done.

and last but not least, a fun fact!

I did not realize this until the ap episode where omar confirmed ace andhera, but my first dnd character was basically a mash-up of andhera and rue.

like. they were an ace paladin poorly faking charm and coolness, using a normative appearance (“imagine a combination of chris hemsworth and chris evans”) as a facade a scared, nonnormative creature hid behind— unfortunately my BINX-alike PC friend died early in the campaign, and the plot took priority over character exploration. but still: same hat!

Day At The Dog Park

Ok, so my three favorite dog breeds are the akita, irish wolfhound, and Black & Tan coonhound. (Yes, I have eclectic tastes)

Akitas tend to be aloof no matter what, but a well-raised hound tends to be a big baby!! LOVES to cuddle and rub against your legs demanding scritches.

Well, took Sutter Cain to the dog park today (forgot my camera, damn it) and I not only saw, but got to PET an ADOOOOOOORRRRRRABLE 5 month old B&T COONIE!!! That made me so happy!!! Little baby’s paws were almost bigger than his whole body!!

I also saw a beautiful plothound, an otterhound, two lakeland terriers, a suuuuuper soft husky, and several other REALLY rare breeds for this area.

I even got to cuddle with a sweet baby newfie!! Bigger than Sutter Cain and couldn’t have been more than a few months old.

What a great day.
