The chill of the crisp autumn air blows through your little shop just as the door swings shut. It sends a pleasant shiver down your spine from where you kneel in the romance section to take inventory.

Your fingers delicately skim the spines of your favorite novels as you count and check them off your sheet. Too caught up in your own daydream of being swept away by a handsome stranger, you don’t hear the footsteps coming down the aisle when you stand up on your feet.

All the air leaves your lungs as you lose your footing. With eyes clenched shut and awaiting the inevitable you brace for the impact that, strangely, never comes.

A comforting warmth wraps around your middle, breaking your fall.

“Careful, miss!” Your savior makes himself heard.

You deeply inhale to catch your breath, surrounding yourself in the mystery man. Your heart skips a beat at the feel of his chest to your back. He’s lean, yet muscular (not that it mattered, but it was a plus). And his scent… he smelled like a mix of warm spices and laundry detergent in a way that reminded you of home. Your eyes just almost fall shut in his warm embrace. Almost.

“Uh, miss?” The arm on your waist loosens and you feel a firm hold on your shoulders.

God, was he gorgeous.

The naval aviator with the perfect hair and adorable glasses has been there five times since Monday, not that you’ve been counting. It is currently Wednesday.

“Hi,” you gasp breathlessly. Your eyes flick to the patch on his chest. “Lieutenant Floyd.”

A small smile graces his features as he pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “Hi, Y/N.”

“You-you know my name?” A flutter bursts in your chest.

“It’s, uh, on your name tag,” he points to the pin on your apron.

Duh. You feel like an idiot. If you weren’t hot earlier, you certainly are now. You wish the ground would open up and swallow you whole right then and there. “Right,” you clear your throat. “Of course.”

He nods and awkwardly scratches at the back of his neck.

He opens his mouth to speak but you’d rather not embarrass yourself any longer so you point to the register before bolting.

You leave Bob standing in the aisle with pink tinted cheeks. He feels his palms start to sweat as he watches you walk off. Bob’s desperate for another interaction with you. Your wide eyes and rambling sent his heart into a frenzy. The moment he discovered your hidden gem of a bookstore in Fightertown, USA, he knew for certain that it would become his favorite place to frequent. The plethora of books and cute bookshop owner was a plus. He has wanted to talk to you for so long and now that he has, he’s scared you off.

Just talk to her. Bob scoffs to himself as he picks a random book off the shelf. Some advice that was, thanks Hangman.

He makes his way back to the front of the store to see you flipping through a Better Homes and Garden magazine. Bob takes a deep breath, puts some confidence in his stride and makes his way to you.

The sight of your newfound favorite customer with your favorite book in his hands has you practically throwing your magazine to the floor.

“You all set, Lieutenant?” You hope the shakiness in your voice isn’t obvious.

“Bob.”

The puzzled look in your eyes urges him on.

“Earlier you called me Lieutenant Floyd. But you could just call me Bob,” he shrugs.

“Bob,” you test out. It’s a simple name, no more than three letters, yet it feels right on your tongue. Like his name was meant to fall from your lips. “Alright, Bob, your total is $4.50, military discount included.”

He completes the transaction in silence and you rock back and forth on the heels of your feet. You desperately want to say something, anything but you can’t. You’ve never been this nervous around a boy before.

“That’s my favorite, you know.”

Bob looks down at the book in his hands, realizing he didn’t even care to look at what he grabbed. “The Notebook?”

You hum in response as you fiddle with the corner of your magazine. “It’s the perfect amount of romance, true love, and tragedy.”

“Like Romeo and Juliet.”

“Oh, no, nothing like that. My opinion on Romeo and Juliet has almost gotten me killed on multiple occasions, so I don’t want to delve into that.” You dismiss with a shake of your head.

You’re rambling again and Bob smiles. You were just the cutest thing. He could listen to you ramble all day if you’d let him. “I’d love to hear that opinion. Promise I won’t kill you.”

The most beautiful sound falls from your lips at Bob’s poor attempt at a joke. That’s when he knows, he’s absolutely enamored by you.

“You say that now, but once I tell you what I think, you might change your mind.”

“Not possible,” he grins, leaning forward on the counter. “You’re too cute to kill.” Bob’s eyes grow wide at his words. Now it’s his turn to be embarrassed. He’s about to apologize, about to take it back and run out of the store when you stop him.

“You think I’m cute?”

The way your face lights up makes Bob think his embarrassment was worth it. “Yeah,” he lets out, turning redder by the second.

“I think you’re cute too,” you smile, placing a gentle hand atop his on the counter.

Bob’s watch goes off startling the both of you and you pull your hand off his. He finds himself already missing the warmth. “Shoot, I’ve got to run.” He grabs his copy of The Notebook. “Say, what are the chances of me taking you out sometime?”

“I’d say it’s looking pretty good, Lieutenant.”

The wink you send him makes his heart rate rise. “Alright, I’ll see you then.”

“See you then.”

You watch him leave with a lovestruck grin. The squeal that comes from you echoes through the empty store. Who’d have thought your handsome stranger would come in the form of adorably shy, Bob Floyd?

“It looked interesting,” Bob mutters.

your post about portland and umbrellas is the final nail in the coffin for its california gentrification I haven’t been there in like 10 years but the idea of the street emptying out in the rain… foul

i don’t really understand the texture of us gentrification yet, so i'll take your word for it. i think it could be the temperatures today, it was 8°C/40F but in the sunshine if i'm dressed against wind i personally find that kind of pleasant and in my experience pnw doesn't storm like monsoons so it goes away.

portland feels very very empty to me in general compared to an indian city. poverty and homelessness is inescapably obvious tho in all cities, but i find theirs no begging? i think thats due to insane amounts of armed private security and cops everywhere. i entered nordstrom rack(?) and their was a 6 foot tall guy with a massive automatic reloading gun and i was so freaked out i took off my bagpack and was like where do i put it. and he was like ah you don't have to but thanks. i've only seen those kind of guns near metro stations or airports behind security walls not at the checkout of a store. the only places i saw a line were soup kitchens/churches. every single public garden and museum and zoo was begging me to donate tho, i've not seen that india before lol. i got a seat on the trimet everytime and didn’t accidentally shove anyone even downtown? there was a cop at my trimet stop ominously reporting on someone. theirs single family housing everywhere?!? two blocks from downtown even? all the street food places are kind of hip and cool and limited to designated street food zones but afaik thats all of the usa. i don't know how different this was 10 years back.

Monday 26th June 2023

After a fond farewell to Days Inn by Wyndham, Vancouver we picked up our Toyota from the airport and set off for Hope BC. The reason for booking this place seems a little lost, but we assumed that it was that we needed a break in what would otherwise have been a very long journey to Naramata tomorrow. Whatever it was, it would appear to be a commonly held view because it appears that the place is mainly geared up as a place to pause to eat and sleep on route to other places all points Rockies. Hope, population 6,181 was first noted when some two third of the native inhabitants were wiped out by smallpox in 1782 after a community having existed here for 10,000 years. Next Simon Fraser arrives in 1808 giving his name to the river, Hudson Trading Company opens in 1848 before being engulfed by the golf rush in 1858. Hope along with the rest of BC became part of Canada in 1871 and in 1886 acquired a station stop on the Canadian Pacific Mainline Railway. The 512km Kettle Valley Railway was built in 1916 to service the copper and silver mining industries and passed through Hope but was closed in 1961 and the track bed now used for recreational pursuits. Skip forward a couple of decades and Rambo First Blood was made here in 1982. However, the Hope we have today is a town set in glorious mountain countryside on a fast flowing salmon spawning river with the beautiful Kawkawa Lake nearby. It doesn't deserve to be just a stopover town because it has fantastic virtues of it own for many outdoor activities. We are staying at the Hope Springs Eternal B&B. A well used phrase from Ecclesiastes, later a poem by Alexander Pope, a film in 2018 and now a B&B. Jolly good. Well it's a great place to stop, although how the postman finds number 65882 in a street completely defeats me! We are told bears visit the very pleasant garden in the morning from the woods beyond. Hmm that old one. The area sits in a bowl created by surrounding mountains making the weather a little volatile. The sky was blue and the sun shone this afternoon, then within a very short space of time the clouds gathered and we had an enormous thunder storm accompanied by torrential rain. Then it all cleared up and we went for a walk along the disused railway track.

Tomorrow we move ever onwards deeper into the Rockies, climbing ever higher. Next stop is for 3 nights giving us more time to explore the area.

ps Some local controversy in these parts due to a federal project forcing an oil pipeline to be cut through forest from Alberta. Feelings are that locals get the construction noise, dirt and grief and Alberta sells its oil and gets rich. All this and accusations that Alberta would like to be part of the USA!

Mormon Country

Today is my last day in Salt Lake City, Utah, and I don’t want to leave. The city is beautiful with its lovely mountain landscape and bright colored tulips springing from the ground. I came at a good time because the weather feels like Spring. In one direction, I see snow covering the mountain tops. In the other direction, I see hues of browns, tans, & greens in the distance. My view from my hotel room made my stay even more pleasant. This was my first time staying at a 4/5 star hotel. I’m glad to have this experience alone because I really got to enjoy the space. Sleeping in a different bed in a new place hits differently. I’m glad I took the opportunity to come out here.

The main reason I came to SLC is to attend my first Anti-Human Trafficking Conference. Since I registered for this conference I kept my mind open because I didn’t know what to expect. For a 2 day conference, the organizers (Freedom Network USA), packed in lots of workshops. When it came to selecting my workshops, I chose ones that the subject matters were little known to me and unfamiliar to the scope of work I do with Adelante. I spoke to a view people, but I mainly moved around on my own (not too much of a big deal). It seemed like the underlying theme was centered around or related to labor trafficking which was refreshing because I think the movement is hyper focused on sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation. First, I regretted signing up for the Young Professionals workshop, but now, I’m glad I didn’t change my mind. I got some helpful information and good insight to how others in my field have encountered similar challenges in the work environment as me, and everyone in the room were in their 20s. However, I feel even more confused thinking about next steps related to my career. Adelante has become a job and not much as a career for me. I’m still passionate working in the anti-trafficking movement, though I wonder if I want to change landscape like doing the same work outside of the health/medical field.

Though the days were long, I was able to explore the city at the end of the day. I visited all things Mormon like the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints temple and tabernacle; LSD Conference Center, the Temple’s botanical garden, and the LSD museum (more like walked passed it). I received a few compliments on my prayer sweatshirt. SLC is seen as this overly conservative religious place. Yet, I ended up at a bar called WHY KIKI and attended my first (drag) burlesque show. I enjoyed myself! It was like a mash up between the movie Burlesque and RePaul’s Drag Show. A round of applause for the women & men who performed that night I know I couldn’t go on stage display my body like that. Like the hosts said, “Every body is a Beautiful body”. I walked around some more & walked through the City Creek mall, and spent the rest of my last day exploring Utah’s Hogel Zoo. I was considering visiting the Great Salt Lake, but honestly, I didn’t want to go by myself (maybe next time…).

I have to flight out in the morning. I’m treading it because I have nothing to come home to. I’m going back to a city I’m not too fond of. I’m going back to an apartment where my bedroom is the only piece of me. I’m going back to a job that I have a complicated relationship with. I guess the good news is that after two weeks of being back, I’ll be off again. This time heading South to South Carolina. I can cross off visiting the West Coast. Next time I’ll be on this side again is to visit Adelena and/or Miranda if they are still stationed in California.

sustainable gardens: macro and micro vegetable, fruit, et cetera.

housing: macro and micro. Tesla type housing? boxable style? for folks looking to live permanently in America but cannot do so, because of no visa, green card etc.

Libraries with books to read- also audio cassette players/cd players and tapes and cds(compact discs) for supplemental education/ language learning- books on tape et cetera

micro/macro gymnasiums with weights.

teachers/ retired or active. teachers are needed to teach a variety of topics and should have access to good amenities food/water/care et cetera.

therapists/therapy. People are often in need of therapy/therapists. People are in need of pleasant/helpful and supportive people.

Here are a few views of my Christmas Tree. The Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri) , also spelled Frasier Fir, is native to the Appalachian Mountains of the USA and is one of the most popular pine species for Christmas trees in North America. The elegant symmetrical pyramidal shape, closely packed needles with blunt ends, and pleasant pine scent makes them perfect as the centrepiece of Christmas home decor. However, these traits are really evolutionary adaptations to survive cold winters. The needles' compact shape with less surface area and a thick waxy cuticle protects them against frost damage while the conical shape of the tree helps snow fall off the branches.

Day 5: Killarney

Today was on par with yesterday for being great. We had a much more pleasant train ride to Killarney. Once we got there, I immediately understood the hype of Killarney. It’s everything I wanted it to be. Adorable small town vibes with great restaurants and shopping. We met our local guide, who gave us a nice list of the restaurants, shops he likes and thinks are worthwhile, which was helpful. He was impressed that u asked about Innisfallen island.

For lunch, we went to Laurel’s, and I had a very oniony chicken and barley soup. After that, we shopped around a little before going into Killarney House. We didn’t do the House tour, but we had a good time strolling through the gardens.

Then we rented bikes (yikes) to go to Ross Castle. I haven’t ridden a bike in about three years, so I was a little nervous. I was shaky at first, but we were on nonstop empty paths, so I was okay. We rode to the castle which was amazing. From there, we took a boat to Innisfallen Island, home to a 9th century monastery. It was just us and two other people on the whole island, and it was absolutely incredible. There are several different parts of the ruins to explore. There’s a Celtic across that had been in the lake for 700 years that they estimate is about 1000 years old. At one point, I found myself standing on what looked like chapel steps. I took a moment to soak that in; it’s hard not to feel close to God when you’re standing somewhere people used to worship over a thousand years ago.

We took a path around the rest of the island after that, which was not quite as cool, but still nice. We saw some special deer.

After returning from the island, we hiked back to Killarney. We went to Rudy’s for dinner, and had Thai curry. We went to Murphy’s and I had a gin and elderflower cocktail.

We stayed in our hotel room after that. we watched Wimbledon and the USA v England World Cup match.

she wanted to do something special for futaba, especially since rei knew that her father was far away. bring a bit of ' america ' into her home by cooking a more ' traditional ' meal, consisting of some barbecue & wings, as well as some fries. the kind of food that she knew was more of futaba's liking, even if she favoured burgers & pizza. rei wanted something a bit more elaborate to show her efforts. she had texted her early on to make sure she could make it ; anticipating the moment that she'd knock on her door. a bright smile featured her lips when she opened & reached for her wrist to tug her in.

"hey, i'm glad you made it." rei beamed, & stepped aside the moment they reached the kitchen just so that futaba would see the banquet she had prepared. she had probably overdone it, but for that reason, invited fang in case she wanted to join as well. whether she'd, though, was unknown to her. there was no confirmation from her part.

"i know you must miss it there, so i wanted to make you feel at home." she offered. even wore colours that would go with the theme, although her clothes tended to be a bit darker, or muted. not as bright & vibrant. "i don't have fireworks, but i thought i could at least cook something for you."

At this point, one must really expect of Rei to think of absolutely everything, but the invite was still a rather pleasant surprise, though she sure was worried if Rei really had the skill for BBQ and the required tools. In a way, she was almost upset, that her friend had been faster to arrange something, while she had been busy with her job. Sadly no holiday in Japan, and taking vacation felt like a crime, but it had been nice to find some time for a phone call with her father.

"I didn't know you celebrate..." she voiced upon seeing her, knowing full well that Rei did it extra for her. For the 4th of July, Rei's apartment was certainly lacking, considering its simple design but the dining table sure was a sight. "Are more coming?" she had to wonder, who even? There was no way, they could eat all of it. Futaba's joy remained rather mild, if anything, she felt rather guilty now, that her friend went through all of this, just for a single person. Even if Fang came, she barely ate, just like Rei. Meanwhile Fang would not come as she messaged Rei, too busy gaming after a long day of work and frankly, she did not give a fuck about that particular holiday. And the possible food only motivated her less. No company Futaba would be really missing now, but staring at the dining table, made her once again realize, how cut off she was from her family. Her father had a big party in their garden, and she had heard more than enough noise in the background. Her half-siblings sure must have fun there too.

"It's wonderful," she commented then, before reaching for her bag and pulling a small plastic bag out full of little USA flags, which she pinned here and there into Rei's food. "But now it is better." Smiling.

Day 23 - June 14, 2023: Interlaken to Zurich

I started my day fairly early to pack-up and check-out of my place in Interlaken. I got a migraine last night so I was awake for a couple of hours before my migraine medication kicked in. That migraine medication takes a while to work but is a complete game changer for me. I wish I had started taking it sooner.

After I checked out, I decided to take a nice ferry cruise along Lake Brienz this morning. The weather was absolutely gorgeous so I wanted to be outside for a bit before I headed to Zurich. The lake was absolutely gorgeous and blue today. There was also a waterfall at one of the towns but I didn’t get a picture of it because everyone was crowding on the other side of the boat trying to get a picture.

I then got back to my place to grab my bag and head over to the train station. The weather was gorgeous today. Not too hot and not too cold. Warm, sunny, and just right. Wearing my backpack wasn’t bad at all for the 15-20 minute walk. I’ve been carrying it around for 2 weeks so I am used to it at this point. The train ride back to Zurich was quite pleasant. I did sleep a portion of the trip though. The ride was easy, it went directly from Interlaken to the Zurich airport train station.

My hotel is actually inside the airport. It’s a capsule hotel, which I’m pretty excited to try. So far the place seems really nice. My bed is one of 12 beds in a little pod area. There is a spa attached to the bathroom and showers but it is shut-down based on some new Swiss laws regulating energy conservation. Bummer, I was looking forward to trying it out. Only thing I wish I had was a little more room to spread out when I re-pack my bag. I need to fit my hiking boots back into my suitcase so it’s going to be a tight suitcase coming back. I didn’t have room for many souvenirs so I don’t think the few I did purchase will affect me too much.

When I decided to go out on the town, I chose to stop at a place for a drink at a place called Frau Gerolds Garten, which was recommended to me by the Swiss Canadians I met in Lugano. It was very eclectic, and also very crowded. I wasn’t in the mood to stay for the food there. Basically, bar food you would see at any beer garden. I didn’t get any other pictures because there were so many people. You know how the Swiss are with their privacy. It was definitely all locals though.

I ended my night with an Italian food place that was one of my only disappointing meals this trip. It was a white truffle pasta dish that completely lacked flavor. I did manage to have a nice affogato though. I suppose that’s what I get for ordering Italian food in Switzerland. On my way back to my hotel, I stopped at a supermarket and purchased a few Swiss chocolate bars. I haven’t purchased any chocolate out of fear of the chocolate melting. I have no idea which ones are good but I picked a few that were slim and could fit into a backpack easily. I also don’t think the ones I picked are chocolates I could find in the USA.

There are a variety of trams and trains I could have caught to get back to my hotel. One was the IC-8 train. The train is quicker than the tram so I thought why not. Both IC-8 trains were at platforms 31 and 32 leaving at almost exactly the same time. I needed to get on 32 and I accidentally got on 31 instead. Silly me got on the IC-8 going the wrong direction. There usually is another stop 30 minutes later but this one was one of the only direct ones. I had to ride an hour to Bern then rush off and run to the correct train leaving 3 minutes later from 4 platforms away. Thankfully, I made it. I arrived back to the airport around 11:15pm. My 15 minute train ride suddenly turned into over 2 hours, oyyyyy.

I got back, showered, and packed up my bag. It took a little work but I got my bag to pack completely with my winter coat and hiking boots. Woot woot!! This capsule hotel is really quite nice. It’s not your classic dorm or hostel. It feels posh even though I’m sleeping in a capsule. Temperature control is good too. Although there’s a check-in and check-out time, I notice there’s only a virtual check-in and the people in my room appear to be like myself, just trying to get sleep before a morning flight or between layovers. You can hear a pin drop in here. Everything is keyless so you either have the code or hold your phone up to the keypad to get into the dorm and into your room.

Today is my last day in Europe and I’m not ready to leave. My flight doesn’t take-off until 12:05pm so I’ll have time to sleep in and maybe get a coffee if I’m feeling brave enough to take the buses or trains tomorrow after this experience. Maybe, maybe not. Alas, another backpacking trip has come to an end. I am incredibly lucky to have the life that I do. I need to keep reminding myself that when I go back to reality.
