March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day!
Tumblr media
March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a reminder to get educated, get tested and get treated.
HIV and Women in New York City
In 2018:
430 cisgender and transgender women were newly diagnosed with HIV in New York City.
82% of new diagnoses among women were attributed to heterosexual contact.
34% of women newly diagnosed were born outside the United States.
Black and Latina Women accounted for the majority of new HIV diagnoses in women.
Of the approximately 26,000 women with HIV living in NYC in 2018, 77% had a suppressed viral load.
Women comprised a larger proportion of new HIV diagnoses in the Bronx and Staten Island than in other boroughs.
Take charge of your health.
Did you know that there is a pill that can help prevent HIV? Pre-exposure prophylaxis (also known as PrEP) is a daily pill that greatly reduces your risk of HIV infection, especially if you don’t always use condoms. PrEP can be an important HIV prevention option for women. If you are HIV negative, talk to your health care provider about whether PrEP may be right for you. You can also use the NYC Health Map to find a PrEP provider.
Click here to find National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day events in NYC where you can learn more about how to stay healthy, whether or not you’re living with HIV.
For more information on HIV in NYC:
Get Tested: Visit a Sexual Health Clinic, call 311, click “HIV Prevention Services” on the NYC Health Map or text “TESTNYC” to 877-877 to find local testing sites. Outside of NYC? Here’s the AIDS.gov testing locator.
Get Treated: If you are living with HIV, you can protect your health and your partners’ health by getting treated. Remember that if you are on treatment and maintain an undetectable viral load for at least six months, you will not transmit HIV through sex. Undetectable = Untransmittable! Text “CARE” to 877-877 for help finding HIV care or support services in NYC.
Learn More about PrEP and PEP: Daily PrEP is a prevention option that women can control; emergency PEP can stop HIV infection if started within 72 hours of exposure. Visit our PrEP and PEP page to get more info.
Stay Sure: Find out where you can pick up free NYC Condoms.

The death from AIDS of theater artist Michael Friedman in September at the age of 41 was a shocking reminder that, yes, people still die from AIDS — and yes it is still affecting the New York theater community, a fact worth repeating on World AIDS Day, which is today.

Michael Bennett 1943 – 1987
About a million people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2016 – and yes, although thanks to the miracle of modern medicine it is no longer an automatic death sentence, people do die in the United States, where, according to statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control,, it is the eighth or ninth leading cause of death for those aged 25 to 44.
As the CDC points out: “An estimated 1.1 million people in the United States were living with HIV at the end of 2015, the most recent year for which this information is available. Of those people, about 15%, or 1 in 7, did not know they were infected.” There were 37,600 new HIV infections in the United States in 2014 — 26,200 of them men who have sex with other men.

For the AIDS Dead By Frank Bidart
The plague you have thus far survived. They didn’t. Nothing that they did in bed that you didn’t. Writing a poem, I cleave to “you.” You means I, one, you, as well as the you inside you constantly talk to. Without justice or logic, without sense, you survived. They didn’t. Nothing that they did in bed that you didn’t.
#WorldAIDSDay: Still Here, Still Affecting the Theater Community The death from AIDS of theater artist Michael Friedman in September at the age of 41 was a shocking reminder that, yes, people still die from AIDS -- and yes it is still affecting the New York theater community, a fact worth repeating on World AIDS Day, which is today.

Prevent HIV with PrEP
Attention NYC women!
If you are an HIV-negative woman in NYC, ask your doctor about pre-exposure prophylaxis, also known as PrEP. It is a powerful tool that can help prevent HIV if taken daily.
According to New York State guidelines, candidates for PrEP include women who:
Are in a sexual relationship with a partner living with HIV
Exchange sex for money, drugs or housing
Have been prescribed PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis)
Use recreational drugs
Inject drugs and share injection equipment
Are transgender women whose sexual practices may expose them to HIV
You should feel comfortable asking your doctor or medical provider about PrEP.

April 18 is the Second Annual National Transgender HIV Testing Day
National Transgender HIV Testing Day was created to increase awareness of HIV status among all transgender and gender nonconforming people. Getting tested and knowing your HIV status is especially important for trans women of color, who experience higher rates of HIV. Those who provide care to TGNC people can learn more about the best way to meet the needs of the community.
All New Yorkers can benefit from knowing their HIV status. People who test negative can learn about HIV prevention tools, including daily PrEP and emergency PEP, which can help them stay negative. People who test positive can start HIV treatment to help them live long and healthy lives.
If you are taking gender affirming hormones, your doctor can prescribe a PrEP or PEP regimen that will not interfere with your hormone therapy.
Many HIV prevention and treatment options are available in NYC. Learn more about how you can beHIVsure , PlaySure, and StaySure.
To get tested:
Join our New York Knows community partners at one of the free testing events listed here, call 311, use the online NYC Health Map, or text TESTNYC to 877877 to find local testing sites.  You can also visit our resources for trans-affirming medical care in NYC.
