Personal headcanon that Usopp and Nami bought their mothers' recipes with them on the Merry. Neither family was particularly rich but (and I'm basing this on my family) they have a few notecards with recipes lovingly writing down. They're borderline illegible and probably says things like "a pinch of nutmeg," "enough salt," and "measure garlic with your heart". (Bellemere's orange duck recipe is there, and I don't remember Banchina cooking, but maybe she has pie or fudge recipes that Usopp barely remembers anymore).

Sanji loves them and tries to recreate them whenever possible, especially if it seems like some comfort food is needed or if someone just really needs a pick me up. They are treated with upmost care and kept safe to avoid damage.

i'm INSANE for platonic ships. most people don't often pay attention to the beauty of nami's relationship with the guys (especially with sanji and luffy) since they're always being shipped romantically with her. they make me physically unwell. they're so so so important to me. if i could talk about platonic sanami and platonic lunami all the time without it constantly being seen as shippy, believe me, i would be the most annoying person on this site.

luffy and nami's relationship is actually really important to me personally because her story and background really resonate with me. i cried so damn much watching arlong park,, not gonna go into detail here, because you all know how important their dynamic and relationship are in canon, but they make me ill. nami spent years without having any friends because she didn't let herself trust others and even less, let herself deserve to have friends. and luffy just appears like a motherfucking ray of sunshine and helps her get out of that toxic and harmful situation she's in. she's herself with the crew. she can be rude and harsh sometimes to keep them in place and yet they still see her as the sweet, fun, caring girl she actually is. she is a thief and a menace and a bit of a bitch (in the BEST sense of the word) and they all know she's always going to be there for them. and she knows they're going to be there for her, too, always. the fact that luffy is always looking after her and protecting her no matter what? the way the first thing that always comes to his mind whenever they're in danger and he has to leave, is to tell either sanji or zoro to look after her for him? it makes me want to curl up and sob. it's not that he thinks she's weak, it's that he knows her fighting style is more to defend herself or others only when needed, and he won't let her be in danger like that. she's the brains, he's the captain. that's HIS navigator. i love the platonic possessiveness of it all. i love them clingy and sappy and holding each other whenever they are sad and always supporting each other. currently, i'm watching wci (everyone knows this because i'm the most annoying sanji fan so ofc i won't shut up) and the fact that she didn't run away when luffy told her so and stayed with him to fight?? the way she stays with him after the fight with sanji???? they are so,,, i just love them so damn much i'm gonna cry. and this is just the example i choose NOW because i'm in a wci mood, but i could talk about them for hours.

I've noticed that we've probably seen all the original main cast characters being romantically (or at least hinted to be so) connected to another character, even if the connection was one-sided. Nami was nowhere seen in a similar situation, except the gag-full marriage with Absalom. The manga is already on it's final saga and there's no sign of her having reciprocated or one-sided feelings towards another character, male or female. Personally, I think it would have been at least logical to make her reject Sanji somehow, if nothing is planned between them. He's been head over heels, willing to die for her for quite a long time and we don't see any signs or development from Nami's side, neither positive, nor negative. As of now, do you think there might be a future change in Nami's feelings or will her undefined position towards Sanji remain till the end, as we haven't seen anything after the WCI events?

(Okay, I'm really sorry for how long it got! I tried to shorten it the best that I could!!)

I think that by the end of the manga, we will find out whether she likes Sanji romantically or not.

I don't think Oda will leave this unsolved, but I do think that (if Nami does reciprocate Sanji's feelings) he might make it happen very discretly, and maybe not even give much panel time for that. Similar to when, all of a sudden, Oda gave us a coverpage of Mister 9 and Miss Monday happily together... with a kid. It was so out of the blue, and we didn't really even see any moment between them that even hinted they had a mutual interest in one another.

Of course, with SaNami, from Sanji's part it's obvious he is interested in her romantically, but what we need now is for it to be mutual, and that's the part I think that might happen "offscreen".

I know this isn't something we, SaNami fans want things to go, but I there are to reasons for me to think that:

A) The "offscreen" route seems like the standard for how shonen mangas deal with romance. Shonen Jump still focuses on content for boys, and they don't think boys want to read about romance as much as girls. So my guess is that, even if Oda wanted to portray a romantic relationship amongst the crew (I don't think he does tho) I don't think he would be able to write that many romantic scenes - so a lot of the romantic development would have to happen offscreen.

I'll give you an example: Sasu Saku in Naruto. Please consider that I am not comparing the characters themselves with Nami and Sanji, I am just analysing how another mangaka from Shonen Jump developed the relationship of an endgame couple in his story and how it might be how Oda writes it too (because he is also a mangaka writing for the same company).

For the entirety of the manga, Saku had a crush on Sasu, but we never really knew whether he reciprocicated her feelings or not. He cared about her, obviously, but for years, fans had to rely on small hints that could be interpreted either as platonic or romantic from Sasu's part.

Only by the end of the manga did the author let us know that Sasu did, in fact, like Saku romantically. And if you rearead the manga knowing that, the moments between them that before were seen as ambiguous become mostly romantic.

(Please, do not interpret this wrong, I know Kishimoto and Oda are two completely different mangakas, with completely different writting styles, but they are writing for the same company, have the same audience and therefore have to follow the same set of rules)

B) I have a feeling that Oda doesn't want to shift the dynamic between the crew.

I myself am a very romantic person, but to be honest, I'm very picky when it comes to romance being portrayed in adventures. I've always liked to ship characters and read fanfics about them, but when it comes to the official content I don't like it when romance takes too much of a story that isn't supposed to focus on it. It's a weird thing from me, I know. Go figure.

Anyway, I think that Oda is afraid of that happening to his story. One Piece is about a group of friends helping one another to pursue their dreams. If we add romance in the mix, the "family" dynamic in the story shifts, and it doesn't really add to the main message anyway, which, to me, is "found family" and "freedom". Otherwaise, the fandom would also get into bigger fights, saying things like "W character loves x character more than y" "W character would rather let y die than character x because he/she loves her/him more" when these things don't really matter.

I know that there are people out there who do that anyway, but I think Oda wants to keep himself away from that type of discussions to focus more on the fraternal love the Strawhats clearly have for one another.

Obviously, it won't stop anyone from shipping (lol here I am, writing this huge text about SaNami even with all the warning from Oda himself), but maybe the wars could be even worse if Oda chose to portray romance. If that's the reason, I really understand where his mindset comes from.

With those two points in mind, my guess is: if Nami does reciprocate Sanji's feelings and they do end up together, not only do I think it will happen doscretly but I also think it's going to be only at the end of the story.

For now, I think Oda will keep on writting ambiguous moments between Nami and Sanji (with Sanji being the one crazy in love), trying to preserve the dynamic they already have until the very last arc, and only change it when the story comes to an end.

That way, romance amongst the crew won't be portrayed during the entirety of One Piece.

It starts when Nami walks into the Merry’s galley, and sees Sanji looking at the molding, unused food in the kitchen with a look that seems deeply troubled - no, more than that; it seems like the very thought of the slightest bit of food being wasted, being tossed aside, uneaten, is like a dagger in the heart.

(Nami does not forget the hint of desperation in his eyes when Sanji made the first meal for them all and declared, with a leg raised threateningly, that no food would ever go to waste on the ship.

A rare possibility, but even with their captain’s appetite, there are no fool proof plans to preserve uneaten foods in the harsh environments of the seas)

He doesn’t even notice when she walks up beside him, a surprising feat given his usual adoring nature when around her, and only starts when she taps his shoulder.

“Sanji?”

“Ah!” He jumps, head perking up and eyes immediately dancing with lust (and still, respect. He, despite his mannerisms, has always backed off when Nami asked him too, or before he had crossed a line. Not that she asked him to back off a lot – no, she liked the attention thank you very much.) “Nami-swan! Would you like a snack? I’m so sorry you had to bother to take time out of your day to fetch your own food! A beautiful princess like you should never have to do that!”

Nami laughs, and waves him off. “No Sanji, I’m good. Just needed to stretch my legs that’s all. What are you doing now?”

It is startling, the way his mood turns somber, the way his shoulders slouch and his one showing eye darkens with sadness. It is not a look she likes on their proud, kind cook and she wants to find out what caused it.

(She had only known the others for a week before Arlong Park, and Sanji even less so. Still, in the few weeks after and all the adventures they had, her love for them all has grown immensely – almost terrifyingly. She knows each of them and cares for them – a somewhat foreign concept still but one she is without a doubt, willing to accept.

Which is why any sadness among her crew, if she can stop it, will not be tolerated.)

“Ah, just… looking at what food can’t be saved and what needs to be thrown out.” The ache in his voice hurts her – and more, she recognizes it from just hearing her own voice in the past. Food to him must be like money to her, Nami realizes. Something important, something needed, something that should never, ever, go to waste.

“Rotten food can’t be eaten after all. It’s my fault for not noticing it was there – normally I use every part of whatever we are eating in our dishes. Sorry Nami-swan.”

God, the guilt. Nami knows Sanji – knows that his food is delicious and knows that the quiet look of pride that lights up his face when the entire table is cleared of any morsel of food is something to be treasured. Knows that he puts effort into every meal he gives the crew (though only his stellar service is for her. Even so – there are always identical snacks waiting in the kitchen for the boys), and knows that smoking is something people sometimes pick up after severe starvation.

She won’t stand for this – this sorrow.

So, she pushes herself off the counter where she had been leaning and smiles at the cook. “Rotten food can’t be eaten, but it can still be used.” She can fix this.

His look of confusion is adorable though.

“Gather up what can’t be eaten and follow me.” She orders. Sanji, as always, hastens to do what she says, even if his movements still have that horrible melancholy lilt to them.

Once he has everything gathered up into bags, she leads him to the top of the Merry, where her tangerine trees are. Along the way they pass Zoro and Luffy, dozing together (cuddling, really, Nami wants to know how long they knew each other before she came along) in the midday sun, and Usopp, fiddling with some new gadget or other, who waves at them as they pass.

It’s a peaceful sort of day, and the waves are calm which means she has plenty of time to show their cook the wonders of composting.

“Uh, Nami dearest, what are we doing up here?” Sanji asks her, setting the bags down as she stops. She only smiles at him, and gestures him further along, to the fenced box of soil she keeps shrouded beneath her trees.

“This, Sanji,” she starts, taking the bags from him, “is a compost pile from my home that I had put on the ship with my Tangerine Trees. It’s purpose is to create nutrient rich organic material that helps the soil in the tangerine trees – which we can then use for food.” Nami opens the bags and grabs her gloves and shovel, ready to get to work. “And you know what we put into the soil?”

With the way his eyes are brightening and his smile is growing wide, she thinks he does. But still, her boys in particular can be idiots so better safe than sorry.

“Any food that we can’t eat.” Nami smiles as she slowly upends the rotten food into the compost pile. “So that no food ever has to go to waste.” Normally she takes organic material from the towns and islands they visit – but this is a much better alternative.

(And – while she doesn’t know what makes Sanji so particular about food now, (No – that comes later, as the two of them sit late at night with midnight snacks (Kitchen locked for fear of their hungry captain) and talk about harsh childhoods that didn’t always have enough food or money for lost little children) but she knows that he does care about wasting food – that if they do, he smokes long and hard outside as if his own meal was not enough to calm the force of starving memories within him, as if every bite was stolen from the mouths of the very people his job it was to feed)

The smile and look of awe he gives her as he realizes that now he will never have to waste food is all the thanks she needs. As the hour passes, she shows him how to compost, how to turn the soil, what few foods couldn’t be used, and how to tell if it was ready to be used on her beloved trees.

As the food is slowly placed into the pile, she can see the sadness dripping off his shoulders, the hurt disappearing from his heart.

(The thought that she did this, is an inspiring one.)

When she gives him a tangerine at the end, he looks as if he had received a gold bar, and promptly sings praises of her name, fully back to his worshipping self.

She is proud her cook is back.

Months later, when the Merry is gone yet still living in their hearts, and the Sunny’s warm Adam’s wood are the planks beneath their feet instead, Sanji and Nami start another compost pile. It becomes a tradition to work quietly in the garden after supper and before the sun sets on the last day of the week (if they are not dragged on another dangerous adventure by their beloved captain, that is), slowly turning what would be waste into life for trees and Robin’s Flowers and Usopp’s Pop Greens.

It’s a nice change, and in the quiet hours that they do this, Nami can’t help but be thankful for their wondrously kind cook and his dream to make sure none of them ever have to starve.
