Mini Doctor McCoy in “Star Trek TOS S03E08: For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky”, drawn in the note space of March 9th in my 2023 diary, and Spock from “Star Trek TOS S03E10: Plato’s Stepchildren” drawn in March 21st note space.
They were the first ones I did in colour, that’s why they’re a bit washed out. References and close ups below cut.

I’m gonna headcannon that, at least at first, Spock was able to more outwardly resist the villains’ telepathy. Like Kirk starts out standing at the ready like a soldier while Spock’s legs are spread out, Spock’s dance feels slightly delayed to Kirk’s, and the way he bows his head at the end almost looks like someone literally shoved his head down. Again compared to Kirk.
Kirk also knows the score here. He knows the torture and embarrassment are supposed to get them to give up. And he’s able to compartmentalize his embarrassment and maybe even be or appear more susceptible to the telepathy. While allowed his faculties he specifically orders Bones not to give in no matter what they make him (Kirk) do. Kirk is willing to put himself through the ringer for Bones’ sake. And Bones knows Kirk can handle it.
But then what about Spock?
He’s willing to risk it all for McCoy as well, but the loss of control takes a far heavier toll on him. Spock’s pain is so great it even gets Bones to beg for mercy for him, and Kirk breaks free (more like cuz they’re not as focused on him cuz they’re too amused that the emotionless Vulcan can be forced to show his feelings) long enough to try to convince Spock not to let them break him.
I love the triumvirate so much.
Don’t really have anything else to say at the moment. It’s a weirdass cringe fest of an episode but I like the character work.
ok now i’m up to plato’s stepchildren and during the scene where they’re making kirk and spock and uhura and chapel perform for them chapel says to spock “for so long i have wanted to be close to you” making it pretty fucking obvious THEY WERE NEVER ACTUALLY TOGETHER
my friend (who thinks star trek is stupid) fell asleep while i was watching tos so i turned on plato’s stepchildren just to fuck around and they woke up. while kirk was neighing and acting like a horse. and i had to sit there and try to justify myself but brother there is No coming back from that one
What are your favorite Spock-centric episodes in TOS/TAS? Mine are Amok Time, Journey to Babel, Spock's Brain (it's the best-worst Spock-centric episode), and Yesteryear. And I love Spock's character arc in The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home.
You already listed the most obvious first picks so I’ll talk about a few episodes that I think are extremely important for Spock (if not entirely Spock-centric) that I don’t feel get talked about enough!
The Enterprise Incident
I find it incredibly intriguing for Spock to be planted as a Romulan spy, especially after Balance of Terror put him through so much grief. It’s one of the few times he’s likely utilizing both his halves in order to fit in, his Humanity to engage with Romulan emotionalism (and to seduce the commander), and his Vulcanity to get close to the commander vis shared cultural history and making “cold-hearted” choices. Not only that, but to accept the assignment, to fake killing Jim (again), and to then be put in the position of a honeypot with the Romulan Commander. It feels almost like a dark and bizarre microcosm of Amok Time. Even if it’s merely going through the motions. I would LOVE to know what’s going on in his head in that one.
Is There In Truth No Beauty?
Oh my GODDDD this one! The relationships Spock has with the Medusan Ambasador and with Dr. Miranda! The ace-spectrum solidarity energy Miranda and Spock have vs the one-sided telepathic jealousy. Spock operating as a physical vessel for the ambassador is still one of my favorite Star Trek moments of all time. The ambiguity of whether Miranda influenced him to look at the Medusan without the protective visor or if he was so curious and lonely that he brought that upon himself?! Love it!
Plato’s Stepchildren
An underrated episode about autonomy and consent and abuse of power. Parmen is a powerful telepath that forces Spock to do all kinds of terrible things he grapples with in this episode. He is forced to display emotion, nearly hurt Jim, sing, and kiss Chapel (which was rough before but is now even more agonizing because of SNW). It is one of the few times where he struggles to contain his rage while not under the influence of anything strange. It’s an absolutely fascinating character study of him!!
