Apparently a lot of adults have trouble with the concept--and reality--that just as good people can do bad things, so bad people can do good things, and I give you Liz Cheney, who after what appears to be a lifetime of doing or at least supporting very bad things, including her war-crimes-profiteer father, is doing a good thing and paying for it. The left is full of men who say flowery idealistic things and are wildly misogynist; history is full of people like John C. Fremont, self-promoter, land-grabber, casual killer, and this country's first antislavery presidential candidate (in 1856); there are military leaders who have their own set of principles they're loyal to--notably the joint chiefs of staff who prepared to stand up against Trump after the 2020 election--that differ a lot from my principles. John McCain was an interesting figure who wallowed in corruption a lot of the time and occasionally did something with integrity. Oh and let me add people who change: who committed a crime or were aligned with something terrible and then evolved, repented, awoke: the category lovers don't want them to leave their slot, which is often quite literally a prison cell. Racism too depends on faith in airtight categories (and often leads to collective punishment, aka members of a group are interchangeable). I get the impression people want everyone to be slotted into a tidy pigeonhole so they don't have to keep thinking and sifting, want people to be all good or all bad, and I certainly see a lot of tidying up of the record--excusing sins, ignoring virtues-- to achieve that goal (and a whole other tome could be written about the condemnation of people in the past for having the values and views of their time rather than ours). People love categories so much they stuff everything into them whether or not they fit, ignore the contradictions and complexities, and once they've slotted something into its proper category assume they know it. The main thing about categories is that they are leaky and contain contradictions. They are useful and necessary descriptions of reality up to a point--after all words are categories, though even drink or horse or fair can mean many things. Taken too far they obscure what's out there. And we are given so many people and things to respond to--including the climate bill signed into law a day or two ago--that are a complicated tangle of the good and the bad; the ability to cope with complexity is a survival skill and maybe a creative talent. Its lack helps people become manipulable, become cult followers who having once made the decision that the leader is right keep following into all sorts of dank places, become unable to perceive what's going on around them ....

I love the new textures of Wish finally going away from hyper-realism, the designs look lovely and storybook-esque, and we seem to be getting a fun villain, but I'm hoping the vibes of Wish is just a bad trailer.

Is it just me or have the past couple of female Disney protagonists had very similar voices and expressions? It's very hyper, optimistic, exaggerated awkwardness in Rapunzel, Anna, Moana, Judy Hopps, Young!Raya, and Mirabelle.

Their respective films do distinguish them, but the same character energies over and over again are a bit monotonous. It'd be cool to see more variety in expression eg. withdrawn, outgoing, chill, angry

thinking about dusttale but ridiculously meta where sans is basically forced by the narrative to do what he does.

he’s tried EVERY. SINGLE. THING. ELSE. He’s even told many people about the situation but try as they might they can’t help. the anomaly just never leaves and continues specifically doing no-mercy routes, because that’s how the story of dusttale goes

something tells him he needs to kill the other monsters in the underground in order to stop the human but every part of himself is like “???why would i do that? why that?” and he just subconsciously knows that it will 100% work for reasons he can’t pin down. but he’s still refusing to carry it out because it’s ridiculous. but then that “something” gets louder and more aggressive like it’s a child whining to their playmates that their game of pretend isn’t going the way they want it. and frankly it’s very annoying and starts to border on unbearable

and since he’s tried everything else and knows a reset can bring everyone back he’s like fuck it, fine, geez. i’ll do it like once stop screaming in my skull

(the something’s probably ink, dude needs to make sure the au’s running its course properly)

my pigeon recently learned that he can rip the newspaper at the bottom of his crate so i’ve been waking up to the sounds of loud paper noises in the morning

Shameless plug as we get closer to the end~ Link here These are 2 of my previously produced designs. They were both guest designs I was invited to make, so I wanted them to mirror each other. Extinct birds and extremely endangered fish. I dunno if I mentioned it last time, but the orange fish, the Golden Skiffia was extinct in the wild until last year. 1200 were reintroduced and they're supposed to be monitored for 5 years. Hopefully they make it! Reintroductions aren't often successful, but I'd love it if these little guys beat the odds.

Andrei's eyes open, blinking away the haze of sleep as he turns towards the door. The length of the flickering candle on the wall telling him it's nearly morning, but not quite. It's not a nightmare that had woken him, so what could—

Crack.

All thoughts of sleep immediately flees him as his gaze whips to the basket sitting on the bedside table, at the egg laying atop the furs lining the basket.

The egg that now has a sizeable crack lining its width, almost like a split grin.

As Andrei watches, there is another soft crack, the grin widening a sliver as the occupant of the egg moves within the shell. He sinks to the floor by the bed, eyes level with the basket, and stays in that position, observing the process.

It takes longer than he expects, the slight movement every few seconds punctuated by stretches of silence in between. Fingers hover over the egg hesitantly, before withdrawing. All birds must hatch by their own power, isn't that right?

After an achingly long time, it finally tumbles out of the shell altogether in one motion, a tiny, bright pink little thing with a sparse covering of yellow feathers and pieces of broken eggshell stuck to its body. In the candlelight, he could just make out a pair of wings, a beak, a pair of eyes, tightly shut.

"...Cranberry," Andrei breathes, the name suddenly all too fitting for the newborn.

Then, a high-pitched squeal from the hatchling sends him immediately to his feet, and Andrei, basket in hand, is out of the door and heading towards the tunnel that leads out of the Abyss before any of the others in the dormitory could wake. The thought that he now had, not an egg, but a real, live, very small and vulnerable bird on his hands just now dawning in his mind.

He needs to go find Naesala immediately.

Congratulations! The egg has hatched!

#i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that #andrei as a noble raised in a time and setting where pigeons are still useful for communication esp in wartime #and for whom pigeon was the very first idea to come to mind when asked about what pet he'd like to have #would have roughly the same pre-research knowledge as someone in the 21st century with access to the internet #and a reasonable interest in animals not specific to pigeons #so i'll base his knowledge on what i knew about pigeons two weeks ago before i fell down the research hole in preparation for cranberry #➵ taking the reins (drabble)#➵ cranberry

I like checking out clown car animation styles so I watched that new teenage kraken movie and honestly I cannot explain how fresh the whiplash is every time I see Jaboukie credited as one of the main roles. Just like..."JABOUKIE?"

The Bastard. The Bastard with warm eyes, a shit-eating grin, a missing tooth, and just ONE earring. Where is the other one? What happened to his tooth, and how could one kid have so many scars? He is HUMAN. The face of human nature, imperfection personified. He sailed on the waters which Gillion used live in with as much ignorance as possible, as a child, not thinking deeper than the surface and what could be used for himself. The Haunted One. The Bastard. The Pirate. He has seen so many things that while Gillion Tidestrider may be Gillion Tidestrider, Champion of the Undersea, Hero of the Deep... to Chip he's just another person. One that can be used. While Gillion Tidestrider's view of the world is confined to a perfect box, Chip's is vast and unlimited and they are POLAR OPPOSITES.

Gillion's name, his status, means so much to him. The world and more. Chip doesn't even know his "real name," and "Chip" is real enough, thankyouverymuch! Chip is everything Gillion was taught is wrong in the world, and he is the one who lifts him out of the water, and sees him as more than his destiny. Oh, and Chip wasn't taught anything. He doesn't even realize how much that matters to Gillion.
