‘This work needs to be done:’ Isthmus funding delays cause frustration in N.S. and N.B. border communities

An 11 hour application for federal funding to address climate change threats against the Chignecto Isthmus has been greeted as a positive development along the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border, but not much more.

“I guess it’s good because we have taken a step forward, but it’s still that unknown,” says Andrew Black, mayor of Sackville N.B.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs say the application for federal funding does not rule out potential legal action in the future.

Houston and Higgs want the federal government to pay for the entire project. The federal government says it will pay for half of the project’s costs through its Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund program.

Megan Mitton, the New Brunswick Green Party MLA for Memramcook-Tantramar, says time has run out for any further mitigation delays due to funding disagreements or legal threats.

“This work needs to be done, no matter what,” says Mitton. “In terms of what percentage should be paid by which government, I think the people of my area feel that it’s going to be our taxpayer dollars no matter what. We just need to figure out how to protect our communities and make sure we don’t end up underwater, in any given year.”

Mayor Black says limited signs of progress and a lack of communication has been frustrating for residents in the border towns of Sackville, N.B., and Amherst, N.S.

“Our two communities specifically have more skin in the game in terms of the Chignecto Isthmus flooding,” says Black. “For our municipalities, it is an absolute game changer.”

Portions of Sackville face a significant flood risk from severe storm surges.

“We just want to see the project get done.”

Reporters asked Premier Higgs at the Atlantic Growth Strategy Meeting in Moncton this week if suing the federal government while applying for funding would be detrimental to the project.

“No, I think the discussions we've had to date are both an interpretation of what we believe in one sense of the Constitution and what my federal counterpart believes [Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc] is what the Constitution says. So getting a legal interpretation and applying for that directly is a prudent thing to do,” said Higgs on Tuesday.

Dominic LeBlanc told reporters this week a lawsuit against the federal government over mitigation funding would be “frivolous” and a waste of taxpayers’ dollars.

During a stop in Halifax in late June, federal Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre said he needed to study the issue before commenting, stopping short of saying the federal government should foot the entire bill.

The Trans-Canada Highway, a CN Rail line, and a system of dikes built in the 1600’s are all located in the area, with an estimated $35 billion per year in goods and services passing through.

Project funding would go toward improvements to the dike system. Once believed to be between $300 and $400 million, mitigation work is now estimated to be as high as $700 million and would provide protection from major storms until 2100.

It could take a decade or longer to complete necessary work, considering three options: raising the height of 35 kilometres of dikes, building new dikes, or raising the existing dikes and installing steel sheet pile walls in select locations.

Roberta Clowater, executive director of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society in New Brunswick, says experts across multiple fields should be part of the decision of which option is used.

“It’s important for ecological reasons,” says Clowater. “It’s important for cultural and human reasons.”

“It will help us figure out how to deal with threats in other places, where it will also come up,” says Clowater. “How can we make sure that we are able to work best with nature, and put that into any of our solutions?”

Clowater says mitigation efforts at the Chignecto Isthmus must include consideration for the natural movement of wildlife, as well as consultations with First Nation communities.

Canada’s New Opposition Leader is a Bitcoiner

Canadian politician and well-known crypto advocate Pierre Poilievre has taken the helm of Canada’s Conservative Party, which appears poised to give the current administration a run for its money in the next federal election.

With his most recent appointment, Canadians may finally be able to pick a pro-crypto leader in the country’s 45th prime ministerial election, which is scheduled to take place on or around October 20, 2025. Poilievre encouraged the Canadian people to elect him as their leader earlier this year in an effort to “make Canada the blockchain capital of the globe.” In March, YouTube channel BITCOIN posted a video of Poilievre at a Tahini's Restaurant during his leadership election campaign talking about his support for crypto, saying: “We must keep cryptocurrencies legal.”

“People should have the freedom to choose other money. If the government is going to abuse our cash, We should have the freedom to use other, higher quality cash.”

He also briefly discussed strategies for streamlining cryptocurrency taxes, laws, and regulations so that there would be a uniform law across Canada. The Conservative Party of Canada currently holds 16 out of 105 seats in the Senate and 119 out of 338 seats in the house of commons, while Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party has a minority government with 160 seats in the latter. In the same video, he purchased chicken shawarma using the Lightning Network. Nevertheless, Poilievre has provided very few details on how his party would implement the regulation and adoption of cryptocurrency. When the Canadian Parliament established a national law on digital currencies in 2014, Canada entered the world of digital assets. A fresh pre-registration file for cryptocurrency platforms was also made by the Canadian regulatory council in August of this year.

Patrick Brown's disqualification from the Conservative leadership race gives Pierre Poilievre an advantage — but Jean Charest may still have a chance.

The Conservative Party has withdrawn Brown from the race, citing allegations that he violated campaign finance rules. Brown denies the allegations, and his campaign has stated that it will appeal the decision.

Poilievre will have a clear shot at the Conservative leadership if the disqualification is upheld.

Teneycke cited the Poilievre campaign's claim that it has signed up more than 300,000 of the 675,000 eligible voters.

Approximately 675,000 members are now eligible to vote for the next Conservative leader.

While Brown's disqualification makes Poilievre's path to victory easier, Shakir Chambers, a principal at Earnscliffe Strategies, believes Charest can win if he courted Brown's supporters.

Brown claims to have recruited 150,000 new party members. Chambers believes those votes could propel Charest to victory.

However, that scenario is likely to depend on how many of Brown's supporters still vote.

Grenier believes that if a significant number of Brown's supporters abstain, Poilievre will gain an advantage.

Poilievre and Charest both claim they have paths to victory based on the preliminary membership list and that Brown's disqualification has no effect on their calculations.

The Leadership Election Organizing Committee of the party did not break down membership numbers by region or indicate how many members each campaign has signed up.

However, the Poilievre and Charest campaigns claim they have enough members in enough ridings to win.

The Conservative leadership election rules award 100 points to each of Canada's 338 ridings. These points are assigned to candidates based on their vote share in each riding. To be elected as leader, a candidate must receive the most points.

Poilievre and his campaign claim to have more than 300,000 members.

However, Charest's campaign claims that 450,000 party members are concentrated in fewer than 100 ridings.

The Charest campaign also claims that the former Quebec premier has secured 80 percent of the votes in his home province's 78 ridings.

The Poilievre campaign denies that their candidate's support is concentrated in a small number of ridings. At least 100 people have signed up in every riding across the country.

Poilievre's campaign provided the CBC with a regional breakdown of his support, claiming that he has over 25,000 votes in Quebec, 118,000 in Ontario, and 71,000 in Alberta.

Those figures do not include those who were removed from the preliminary list by the organizing committee, but the party claims that only about 6,500 names were removed from the list for failing to follow party or Elections Canada rules.

The fact that a campaign has a certain number of members does not guarantee that those members will vote in the fall — and those who do can vote for a different candidate.

The release of the preliminary list allows all campaigns to call or email party members in the hopes of persuading them to switch sides.

Scott Aitchison, an Ontario MP and leadership candidate, has announced plans to go on a tour this summer to win over supporters.

The campaign for Roman Baber is "optimistic" about the membership makeup.

Leslyn Lewis's campaign in Ontario also claims to have a path to victory, though it has not released its own membership figures.

On Mediocre Men, or Persons in General

I always thought mediocrity has a few telltale symptoms, not the least of which being that the mediocre person feels the irresistible need defend every scrap of opinion and every inch of power they have. Mediocrity aspires to more but rarely claims it, but it also tends to act like saline water when presented with an isolated container of freshwater - it wants in. It'll interface with the moiety of the surrounding environment and it'll seep in in whatever way it can, at any cost. That obviously includes power.

Wil Wheaton's post on mediocre white men didn't offend me in my nature as a Caucasoid, because I humbly think I lack that particular trait, that need to step up with a "yeah, but what about-" that characterizes so many supposedly SJW-skewering pundits. I'm not an authority on what others of other gender identities, cultures, lifestyle choices or creeds go through, but I am someone who at least tries to apply empathy. The thing is, it's impossible to empathize with mediocre people, following the above definition.

I'll lay Putin to rest for a sec, seeing as the entire world knows how much of a low-down, hateful and ignorant piece of shit the guy is, and instead point to Quebec's own Jean Charest as an example of mediocrity.

Dude started as a Conservative, waffled over to the Liberals, switched back to the Tories and then clinched his mandate as Prime Minister of Quebec as a member of the Liberal party. In every case, rallies start with him stroking the backs of his donors and contributors, stating how much of an XYZ he's always been, and how he deeply shares in XYZ's values. This time, as he's courting the Calgary elite and pushing hard to make them forget the fact that he's fundamentally a French Canadian removed from their own priorities, he's openly stated that he's built to win.

As it really isn't about politics. It really isn't about having the courage of his convictions - it's all about hitching a ride on whomsoever's back happens to be large enough to get him to Ottawa. He doesn't even try to stroke the usual Conservative erogenous zones, like a revised fiscal plan or (groan) budget cuts, and merely sticks to promising a win, plain and simple. Compare and contrast with Pierre Poilievre's Diet Trumpism and his stoking the fires of the old Freedom Convoy dumbshits, and you realize that while that second one at least has enough balls to be stupid, John James Charest has no ambition. All he wants is to sit his ass in Parliament and in so doing, reassure the slightly agitated base amongst Conservatives that's a tiny bit distressed with Canada not having an international representative that has the dynamism and passion of a slice of stale bread. As historically, that's mostly what we've had.

I get that Justin Trudeau isn't perfect. I get that his handling of the pandemic wasn't perfect. I understand how many would've preferred to avoid certain scandals, starting with the WE Charity debacle. I understand how some people might somehow feel that he doesn't quite rise up to the office's standards - if said standards are of being a doddering White dude past his prime with an eye out for the captains of industry's coinpurses.

I'm ordinary. I'm white-bread as shit, even as far as people speaking in the name of their fellow disabled persons are concerned. I don't even have the decency to be crippled enough to justify sweeping credit reforms for low-income workers with reduced mobility. I can take the bus, I can work a desk job and I can take care of myself - I'm ordinary.

With that in mind, I'm content enough to not be mediocre. I can't imagine what it must be like, to live in a tiny bubble that lets you think the circumstances of your upbringing are universal enough to give you complete authority on how others live out their lives, or to assume that your privileged status means you have to spend your years in office stroking lobbyists' backs. I know Putin and Charest can't compare, but both of them are insulting for differing reasons.

Differing reasons that both mark them out to be mediocre in nature - at least in my book.

A group of Conservative MPs fiercely opposed to the new vaccine mandate for cross-border truckers has criticized what they call Justin Trudeau's "vaccine vendetta," saying that the policy will disrupt the country's supply chains.

Pierre Poilievre, a Conservative MP and finance critic, said the government's vaccine policies are "eliminating grocery stores and ballooning food prices," which makes some Canadians "go hungry."

He joins the unvaccinated truckers who intend to protest the mandate, says Garnett Genius, an Alberta Conservative MP. Justin Trudeau's vaccination vendetta is foolish, he argued in a recent post on social media.

Transport critic Melissa Lantsman urged supporters to sign a petition opposing new vaccine requirements. Her claim was that the policy would cause thousands of jobs to be lost as well as "empty shelves" in Canadian retail sectors.

As Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole said today, Trudeau is bent on dividing Canadians by forcing vaccines on truckers. O'Toole has opposed vaccine mandates for federal public servants and the travelling public.

In times of high inflation, the government should instead conduct rapid tests at the border for unvaccinated drivers. He called for what he called practical alternatives to a vaccine mandate, saying, "Let's be clear. We can both advocate for vaccines and also protect people's livelihood."

In contrast to some doctors who regularly appear on television promoting public health measures, O'Toole has "encouraged vaccination more than anyone in Canada."

O'Toole also called on the government to either halt or postpone an increase in Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions. Inflation is now at its highest level in decades, so Canadians can't afford a pay cut.

As a result of a Jan. 13 decision by the federal government, most of the border policies that already apply to the general public are now extended to essential workers like truckers, who up to now have been free to cross the Canada-U.S. border.

The government initially announced the policy in November, but later backtracked, telling journalists the policy would not come into force as planned. According to Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, that statement was sent by error.

To avoid stringent testing requirements and a lengthy quarantine period, all Canadian truckers must show they have received two doses of an mRNA vaccine — or one dose of a Johnson & Johnson shot.

Unvaccinated or partially vaccinated foreign nationals are not allowed into Canada. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials will deny entry to anyone who shows up at the Canada-U.S. crossing without appropriate proof of vaccination, the government said in announcing the policy earlier this month.

Canada does not accept foreign nationals without vaccinations or with partial vaccinations. Those who show up at the Canada-US border crossing without proof of vaccination will be denied entry, CBSA officials announced in an announcement earlier this month.

A similar vaccination mandate has been implemented in the United States. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will require proof of vaccination of all essential foreign travellers, including truck drivers, starting this month.

According to industry groups, the new vaccination policy could sideline roughly 26,000 of the 160,000 Canadian and American drivers who regularly cross the border.

Vaccination rates are high among truckers, according to the Canadian Trucking Alliance, which represents the industry. However, It warned that Ottawa's mandate could result in the loss of thousands of Canadian cross-border truck drivers — roughly 10 to 15 percent of the vehicles crossing the Canada-US border regularly.

The trucking industry is planning a rally on Parliament Hill this weekend to protest the new vaccine requirement. Canada Unity, an anti-public health mandate group is being organized by Canada Unity, an anti-public-health-mandate group, is organizing the convoy dubbed the Freedom Convoy. The group's website states that the convoy should arrive in Washington on Jan. 29.

Over $3 million has already been raised through a GoFundMe campaign to help truckers and their allies make the cross-country trip.

As stated in a media release, the CTA "strongly disapproves" of protests on public roads, highways and bridges. CTA says that protests that disrupt public safety are not an appropriate way to express disagreement with government policies.

"Governments of Canada and the United States have made vaccination a requirement for crossing the border. Since this regulation will remain the same, as an industry, we must comply," CTA president Stephen Laskowski said in a statement.

A commercial truck or any other vehicle crossing the border must be vaccinated." In response to journalists' questions, O'Toole was non-committal.

"It's not the job of the leader of the opposition or any political party to attend a demonstration on the Hill or participate in a convoy. It's up to politicians to advocate for solutions in a cost of living crisis in a way that is responsible and respectful of the public health crisis we are facing," he said.

The prime minister defended the policy today, saying COVID-19 infections are disrupting Canada's supply chains more than any vaccine mandate could. In his opinion, enforcing this policy is the best way to prevent new travel-related infections.

We want to ensure COVID does not become a scourge in this country, so we encourage everyone to get vaccinated, he said. About 90 percent of truckers are vaccinated in this country.

Conservatives are using "fear-mongering" to convince Canadians that the shelves will be bare if this mandate is enacted. "Vaccination is the way forward, but that's not something the Conservative Party will support," he said.

Canadians took to social media over the weekend to post photos of their local grocery stores in the midst of the political battle over vaccine mandates and supply chains. In some pictures, shelves were empty, in others there was abundance.

Application process for emergency benefits for workers begins this morning

Applications open today for the new federal emergency aid benefit for Canadians who lost their income because of COVID-19.

The Canada Revenue Agency will open its application portals this morning to those born in the first three months of the year, with those born in other months able to apply later in the week.

The agency is trying to keep demand from overwhelming its online and telephone systems.

More than two million Canadians lost their jobs in the last half of March as businesses across the country were forced to close or reduce their operations to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Others are unable to work because they are required to self-isolate at home, or need to look after children whose schools and daycares are closed.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau anticipates the wage benefit will cost the government $24 billion.

People born in April, May and June can apply Tuesday, those born in July, August or September can apply Wednesday and applications are accepted Thursday from people born in October, November and December. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be open to anyone.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday Canadians who sign up for direct deposit could get their first payment before the end of the week. It's anticipated direct deposit applicants will get money within three to five days, while those who opt for printed cheques will get money in 10 days.

How to apply for the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit

"While we still have a lot of work to do, we're making good progress on getting you the support you need as quickly as possible," Trudeau said.

However, opposition parties say there are some glaring holes in the aid that is leaving some people in need out of the program completely.

Conservative finance critic Pierre Poilievre said there are "serious design and delivery flaws" that should be fixed.

Poilievre said some small business owners who paid themselves with dividends don't qualify because they won't have $5,000 of employment income in 2019 as the benefit requires. Further, he said a worker who has lost most of their income but still has one contract or a handful of clients won't qualify for any money because you can't have any current income in order to be eligible.

"They are effectively banned from doing any amount of work that might help keep their business open," he said.

Poilievre said there are some easy fixes, including adjusting the wage benefit down slightly if a worker earns some income, much like happens when someone is collecting employment insurance but manages to find work temporarily.

He also wants small business owners to be viewed as employees for the purposes of the emergency response benefit.

NDP MPs Peter Julian and Gord Johns wrote to Morneau Sunday also asking for changes, including to address the fact the benefit provides an incentive not to work at all.

They said workers who have lost most but not all of their shifts, or lost one part-time job but not the other, "are living on significantly reduced incomes" but won't qualify for the benefit.

"The consequences are that they are now asking to be laid off or furloughed so that they can access the CERB," they wrote. "This is causing significant disruptions to normal business, to essential services, and to community contributions on local economies."

Opposition parties also want more clarity on the government's biggest aid program, the $71 billion, emergency wage subsidy, that will cover up to 75 per cent of wages for businesses that choose to keep employees on the payroll rather than laying them off.

Poilievre said it is going to take too long for businesses to see any of that money, and some of them won't survive that long.

The Conservatives and NDP both want the government to reconsider the requirement for businesses to show a 30 per cent drop in revenue in order to qualify.

To be eligible for the emergency benefit, workers must have earned at least $5,000 in 2019, or in the 12 months before applying. The benefit is the same for everyone regardless of previous income, and is a less complicated application process than for employment insurance.

Instead of an honest debate about fiscal policy, we get filter bubble pap

Last week, I chastised Bill Morneau, the Finance Minister, for gloating about Statistics Canada’s latest hiring tally, which suggested a way-too-good-to-be-true 94,100 jobs were created in November.

That’s more than five times the monthly average since 1976. StatCan advises against making big statements based on singular readings from the Labour Force Survey (LFS); the margin of error is too large. Election season must be close, because politicians and politicos who should know better are ignoring such warning labels.

The goal appears to be to lure partisans into an alternative universe until election day, when they will be sent back to this Earth to vote. How else do you explain the candy-coloured world that so many Liberals inhabit on social media, and the dystopian fantasies that play out on the Twitter feeds of Conservatives such as Pierre Poilievre, the Opposition finance critic?

This should trouble all of us, and especially readers of the business pages, who might have a tendency to dismiss political gamesmanship. We’re used to politicians exaggerating the merits and drawbacks of various policies; now, basic facts are fair game. When there is nothing on which partisans can agree, the result can only be more of the chaos of the sort that has brought us the trade wars. Paul Martin, the former prime minister, thinks we’re “living a throwback” to the worst era of modern history.

“One could say that we are going back to the turn of the century, which led to two world wars and a major depression,” Martin said at an event hosted by the University of Ottawa’s Institute of Fiscal Studies and Democracy. “It did that because it was impossible for governments, for parties, for political people to get along and to compromise and to understand what was required.”

The same jobs report that got Liberals excited also produced the source material for a story Poilievre told his Twitter followers about how the cost of living in Justin Trudeau’s Canada is increasing twice as fast as their wages.

He rooted around and found a subset of data that said the average weekly earnings of permanent employees were 1.2 per cent higher in November than a year earlier, while annual inflation in October was 2.4 per cent. “That’s a real wage cut for Canadians,” Poilievre said. “Trudeau’s taxes and deficits are weighing heavily on working people.”

The Opposition finance critic appears to have something in common with the minister he shadows: They both think most of us are stupid.

Fact: The cost of living isn’t increasing twice as fast as wages. The Bank of Canada tracks four wage indicators and uses them to create a composite measure of its own; taken together, those gauges show that average hourly earnings are rising at least as fast as inflation. (Unlike Poilievre, most economists track hourly pay, not weekly earnings.) The wage data in the LFS is the central bank’s least favourite because it’s so volatile.

Job creation tends not to explode the way it did in November, and upward pressure on wages doesn’t vanish overnight in an economy that has been growing at or above its non-inflationary potential for two years. On average, the hourly pay of workers 15 years and older has increased at annual rate of three per cent this year, according to StatCan. The pace has slowed in recent months despite low unemployment, which is a mystery worth solving. But overall, while many of us might still be struggling to get ahead, most of us aren’t falling behind.

Conservatives spent a lot of time before the Christmas break talking about the deficit. That suggests they sense a weak spot, which would mean Morneau and Poilievre will have feature roles in next year’s election drama. It’s a shame both men have been so willing to sacrifice their credibility in order to win cheap political points. Neither appear interested in winning converts. Their messages are designed only to keep their filter bubbles happy, or unhappy, whatever the case might be.

Deficits are a good issue. The decision of Moody’s Investors Service to downgrade Ontario’s credit rating is a reminder of what happens when governments let their debts get away from them. It plays in the federal Conservatives’ favour.

At the same time, Ottawa’s finances are nothing like those of Ontario. The latter’s debt is on track to reach 45 per cent of gross domestic product in five years, while the federal debt-to-GDP ratio is forecast to remain stable at around 31 per cent. Canada is one of only a handful of sovereign borrowers that retains the highest score from all the major debt rating agencies. It also must be said that Trudeau’s deficits have offset the negative effects of the trade wars. That plays in the Liberals’ favour.

An honest debate might cause some Conservatives to realize that there is nothing magical about a balanced budget; research by the International Monetary Fund shows that spending on infrastructure, education and other things that create wealth reduce debt over the long run. Or it might cause some Liberals to realize that their current champions have squandered Martin’s legacy as slayer of the last big deficit.

Charest, Brown both promise to honour federal childcare agreements with provinces (msn.com)

OTTAWA — At least two of the candidates running for leadership of the Conservative party say they would do something the former party leader wouldn't: honour childcare agreements signed between the federal Liberal government and provinces.

Those running to be Tory leader must stake out a position on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's promise to provide Canadians with $10-a-day child care by 2026.

The options before the Conservative hopefuls include scrapping the program entirely, replacing it with something else, or keeping it and adding extras.

During last fall's federal election campaign, former leader Erin O'Toole — who was dumped by caucus in a majority vote in February — faced criticism over his plan to kill the Liberal program, unveiled in that spring's budget, and introduce a refundable tax credit.

Since then, all provinces have signed onto the plan, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford in late March.

On Tuesday, Former Quebec premier Jean Charest promised that a Conservative government led by him would keep existing childcare deals in place.

He pledged to introduce a tax credit to rebate up to 75 percent of childcare expenses for low-income families that don't use subsidized daycare and provide payments monthly than rather annually.

Charest also committed to extending parental leave benefits to two years and moving eligibility for the Canada child benefit to the beginning of the second trimester.

He made the promises under the pitch that childcare is an essential service and families are struggling under the weight of the expense.

Several hours later, Brampton, Ont., Mayor Patrick Brown issued a statement saying he would also honour provincial childcare agreements and offer tax credits to extended family members who help raise children.

"I would make it easier for extended family members living abroad to come to Canada to provide childcare for new Canadian families," he said in a statement on his campaign website.

“I would ensure that parents working in gig economy jobs or who have started small businesses have equal access to parental leave benefits as others currently do."

Brown attacked rival Pierre Poilievre, accusing him of wanting to tear up the Liberals' national daycare plan and having "regressive views on families and childcare."

A spokesperson for Poilievre's campaign has not yet responded to a request for comment.

So far, 11 candidates have declared they want O'Toole's old job, with exactly one week left to put their name forward and until the end of the month to submit $300,000 worth in fees and the number of nomination signatures.

The Conservative party announced on Tuesday that Poilievre, Charest and former 2020 leadership contender Leslyn Lewis had crossed that threshold and are official candidates in the race.

As for Lewis's plan, when for childcare, a campaign spokesperson said she would make an announcement on the issue and the Canada child benefit that "we believe Canadians families are really going to be excited about."

On Tuesday, she promised greater protection for parental rights by pledging to make them into law.

"We currently have a society where many parents are afraid of even having conversations with their children about certain subjects," her campaign website read.

No specifics were provided, but on social media Lewis said government shouldn't interfere with a parent's ability to raise their children according to their own values.

She earned considerable backing from the party's social conservative wing and Prairie grassroots in the 2020 race, and her campaign said she has been drawing crowds of several hundred at tour stops around the region.
