I only ask cause you usually seem to be pretty up to date on the goings on of this site, but what the HELL is going on with tumblr's CEO? Why are they having a meltdown responding to asks? What's the trans misogyny accusation about? Why is tumblr apparently being run by children?

This is kind of a long story so this is sort of TLDR for brevity but there’s more going on here.

Some context if you weren’t aware; Tumblr has been accused multiple times by its userbase for fostering TERF staff members and covering for them when making transphobic moderation calls. Things like; an overeagerness to ban trans women for posting nudes despite not addressing nazis or bots for years, or protection of notable TERF users who flagrantly break TOS by organising hate campaigns. The users who collected evidence of this became huge targets for these “””alleged””” TERF mods and users and were basically hunted online for sport. Up until recently the “terf mods” take was considered a bit of a conspiracy theory by some who assumed it was more likely to be an automation problem mixed with transphobic reports.

This week: tumblr user predstrogen was recently permabanned (for a second time) following a mass reporting by TERFs. This, obviously, pissed a lot of people off, and a fairly routine “the fuck haven’t you banned the nazis yet??” ask was sent to photomatt, the CEO.

Photomatt, INSANELY, replied, misgendering her multiple times and defending his decision to personally smack down the ban hammer by citing predstrogens nudes, but by his own admission the far more heinous crime was this absolutely ridiculous post;

Matt has also contacted the FBI over this stupid shit despite predstrogen not living in the US.

Lastly, during this very public announcement on the kangaroo court hearing, matty drops this absolute nuclear bomb about Tumblr having some internal drama when they’d discovered an external contractor was A) a transphobe wielding mod authority to be transphobic B) criminally selling moderation (likely to TERFs).

Despite this obviously being on the record somewhere, this is clearly news to fucking everyone including myself.

It’s also worth noting that predstrogen has not been the only recent ban; several black people and black transfems have been instabanned after directly asking matt for accountability (the user i’ve seen specifically named was @rulerofpurple and his partner)

So, naturally, people are fucking furious they spent years getting gaslit by staff, who had been assuring us of their even-handedness, but surprise!!! Trans women WERE being uniquely targeted, and even worse, likely targeted by the people who they could never seem to deplatform despite constant death threats and doxxing!! And despite all this assurance that Tumblrs internals are now perfectly free of transmisogyny and racism, it’s pretty obvious to just about everyone that Tumblr staff are chomping at the bit to ban trans women.

I think if Matt defaulted to Press Release Rhetoric like "we are looking forward to the further growth challenges that Tumblr will bring us." It would have come off as insincere. Like yeah I don't necessarily agree with some of Matt's management decisions but some people on this website are insane cunts. Haters are an inevitable part of a healthy website ecosystem, and I'm glad Matt isn't trying to make it seem like all sunshine and rainbows.

PSA - Things You Cannot Say On Tumblr

Hi, I'm a tumblr user. Did you know that it's illegal to say "i hope photomatt dies forever" on tumblr?

It's illegal! It's a TOS violation. It's one of the only sentences that you're not allowed to say.

It was ok for me to say it right then, because I'm not actually saying it, I'm just letting you know it's illegal to say. Kind of like a public service. I'm letting you know, so that you don't accidentally go out and say something like that.

But what's interesting is that while it's very illegal to say "I hope photomatt dies forever a painful death" (that's illegal, extremely illegal, very very illegal), it's not illegal to say "involving a car covered in hammers that explodes" - because that's it's own sentence!

It's an incomplete sentence, sure, but it may have nothing to do with any previous sentence before it. So, that's perfectly fine. Perfectly fine.

However, I also found out that it's incredibly illegal to go on tumblr and directly criticise photomatt for tumbling ass-first into an overtly transmisogynistic mass-reporting harassment incident and deciding to side with the harassers. INSANELY ILLEGAL! Ridiculously, recklessly, insanely illegal!

It is yet more illegal to post a series of images involving cars and hammers:

ILLEGAL! They will come to your blog in the middle of the night an ban you for life. Extremely against the law.

Uh, one thing that is still technically legal to do is post a string of emojis related to cars, hammers, and explosions in the tags of your post.

In a stroke of good timing given the photomatt stuff here, Bluesky is beginning to open itself up to federation.

I'm really interested in some kind of service that interacts with ATProto, rather than being another "In case the CEO goes insane" copy server. I made a Bluesky feed that shows whenever people on my list of Webcomic Creators post an update, but I'd love to be able to make some kind of portal site to make a less spam-bot-y TopWebcomics for the modern age.

Hi, so I usually try to keep things light and just talk about my hobbies and interests here, but a community of people I identify as and care for dearly are being attacked on this website and I feel the need to throw my hat into the ring.

Primarily I want to talk about the response @photomatt has been giving about the predstrogen ban. I have nothing good to say about it, and frankly most of it has already been said. The image that got her banned is being referred to as involving sexual content when that could only be accurate if you think most people get off primarily to shoulder blades, the alledged threats of violence are insanely wild situations that you would have to be blind to miss as a joke, etc. But reading through what Matt has been saying the part that initially made me want to weigh in was this

He does this a lot from what I've seen, and it's textbook transmisogyny. This sort of language is used to imply that it wasn't that big of a deal and you don't need to be making that big of a fuss about it. It's used to make the people offended by this seem unstable or hysterical. I say transmisogyny because I've primarily seen it used against trans women, but it can be used elsewhere. At best this is internalised and subconscious, and Matt needs to take some time to address his internal biases. At worst this is intentioned antagonism.

Also, he's currently running this website. In regards to a high profile incident that occured here, I would expect some due diligence in looking into the situation. Pronouns shouldn't be a hard find, they're in most profile banners. Not to mention his in-depth knowledge of various 'guideline violations' she supposedly commited. I find it very unlikely that Matt was just handed a piece of paper with her username and list of offences. Even if he were he could at least put some fucking effort in.

This last segment is directed towards Matt hismelf. This post comes across as angry, I'm sure. That's because I am. I'm angry at the moderation that has consistently failed trans women over the years. I'm angry at the loose and hand-wavey response to this problem. I'm angry at your responses to this issue in particular. Matt, I don't want to be angry. Give me a reason not to be angry, please. It's never too late to backpedal instead of doubling down. The longer you wait the more beautiful, brilliant women you lose from this site, along with the people that care for them. I know you probably won't read this, but I hope that if you do you understand.

also insane to me how staff went entirely scorched earth on that blog (i’ve forgotten the url) that accused a staff member of being transphobic, deleting every single reblog of the post (thus proving they DO have the moderation tools to actually do something about the harassment campaigns that many transfemmes on this site have had to face and they’re just choosing not to do anything) and then just to top it all off it comes out that tumblr staff DID in fact have a transphobic moderator, as admitted by @photomatt himself. That person was basically right all along and they got completely wiped for saying it. i will not forget about that and you can’t convince me staff wasn’t just trying to cover their own shitty behavior. Disgusting.

the fact that the image link matt first posted in the replies of the predstrogen "explanation" post was cropped to only show the reblog not ONLY to be like "LOOK LOOK she ADMITTED to sending me death threats" when that's not even what she said, but also that the actual "death threat" eventually included in post is so ridiculous and clearly not an actionable nor believable threat is just fucking depraved.

the key words in the original post should be "i hope" and "car covered in hammers that explodes[...]and hammers go flying everywhere" and referring to him as "photomatt" and not his actual name

it's not enough that it's insane matt as a ceo with SIZEABLE INFLUENCE would even be participating in this and posting screenshots, especially when what was obviously his "star witness" screenshot backfires and does not placate the masses, but he makes an even bigger ass of himself by posting this in the notes

framing the screenshot as him "making an exception" and doing all of us a favor is such a bullshit tactic, because if predstrogen was truly posting credible threats on his life then matt (being as irresponsible as he obviously is) would have posted it in a heartbeat, because this was his chance to prove anything of what he is claiming.

oh right, and the threat to report her to the feds! that's a great idea, let's report a trans woman to the fbi to terrorize her! because what else would it be for, to find a prototype of a car covered in explosive hammers?? even if there was a credible reason to start an investigation using federal resources, i doubt that matt would be posting screenshots and his awful takes on a public forum like this, it makes no difference whether he is the one who ones the site or not.

this was clearly a manufactured post to further spread misinformation about predstrogen and threaten any other trans women who's frustration with the site and it's blatant discrimination that they will be seen as a threat.
