He was an art major in college and now I am an art major. Crazy. Ace Attorney really helped me get through 2020 (A worldwide lockdown is a GREAT time to play a bunch of 20+ hour long games) and Phoenix was my favorite character since day one. When I was considering a different name to go by I was considering Phoenix for a little bit because of this fucker. He's also just a really good character?? Seeing him in college versus Apollo Justice? He has range.

Papyrus:

I'm the person people come to irl with questions about Papyrus. My friends call me the Papyrus Master. I did not ask them to do this. Hey guys how is a skeleton that's essentially a couple balls attached to a stick so gender btw??? Anyways I was mentally ill about Papyrus BEFORE it was cool /lh. I still find it very funny that people were shocked when Papyrus was my favorite character back in 2015 because Sans was catered specifically towards my interests at the time and I really went "Yeah he's cool but look at this guy instead."

Oh yeah, its all coming together

Despite all the controversies, I've always liked the Hobo Phoenix. His character change from an upbeat lawyer to a jobless man who seemed dead inside took me by surprise when I first played AA:AJ, but it was in a good way.

After a while I realized that Hobo Phoenix had basically the same personality as Sans, who is my favorite character from Undertale (and one of my all time). Then I had that "oh yeah, its all coming together" click.

These two characters exude this disinterested and lazy hobo aura, but inside they know much more than they let on (Phoenix was a brilliant lawyer and Sans a very capable scientist who studies space-time, if the secret laboratory in his home is an indication). Underneath this mask of disinterest, they hide a really tragic story and even assume the role of "mentor" of the main character (Phoenix with Apollo and Sans, more indirectly, protecting and giving advice to Frisk throughout the game.)

Their clothing styles are identical and even their job issues are similar (Phoenix working as a poker player/pianist to support himself and Trucy and Sans working as a sentry/comedian at the MTT resort/hot dog vendor at his “illegal” hot dog stand/telescope keeper to support him and Papyrus). They even have a favorite drink (Phoenix and his grape juice; and Sans has the ketchup).

They even like to make bad puns and jokes (having their signature jokes: Phoenix with "Wright" and Sans playing with the skeleton and bones concept).

And bonus, these two characters have just one person as a family who is bubbly and flamboyant and who means the world to them.

Hobo Phoenix and Sans would be besties and you can't change my mind.

The corridor was yellow, pillars jutting on either side, framing windows. It seemed to go on forever. He knew it didn't. The checkered floor, golden light shining from the windows. His footsteps echoed around the hall as he walked. Then, he saw him. Alabaster. He hadn't seen the guy since Snowdin, since his sisters death. The witch stood, a relaxed posture, hands tucked into the pockets of his emerald green hoodie like they had been the first time they met, unlike the others he didn't seem to carry a weapon. He regarded the other with those cold, green eyes. Studying him like he was some science project.

"Heya." His voice echoed around them. "You've been busy, huh?" He paused like he was waiting for a response. Green eyes stayed glued to where they bore into his. "So, I've got a question for ya." The only response he got was a scowl. "Do you think even the worst person can change…?" Silence. He continued anyway. "That everyone can be a good person, if they just try?" Silence. He laughed. "All right." He murmured, eyes flickering away for a split second. "Well, here's a better question." He shifted his weight, a shadow passed over his face, making his eyes look pure black. "Do you wanna have a bad time?" Again, silence, he shrugged, closing his eyes. "Cause if you take another step forward…" His tone turned cold. "You are REALLY not going to like what happens next." He stepped forward. Alabaster snorted. "Welp." He slid his hands out of his pockets. "Sorry, old lady." His eyes flashed. "This is why I never make promises."

The red soul appeared in front of him. He swore he could hear birds chirping. "It's a beautiful day outside." Alabaster mused, crossing his hands behind his back. His eyes were closed, but he'd yet to attack. "Birds are singing, flowers are blooming…" So he could hear birds. "On days like these, kids like you…" Alabaster's voice turned tight. "Should be burning in hell." His eyes began to glow and the soul in front of him turned blue. slamming him against the ground. Swords shot up from the ground but he was able to avoid them, but more shot out from from the walls, aiming for him. A few lasers shot out at him, he dodged them easily. "Huh," Alabaster muttered. "Always wondered why people never use their strongest attack first." Percy scowled.

6 characters that kinda inspired me 😄

My rambles about each character under the cut:

Chibi Maruko-chan: The first slice-of-life anime I watched as a kid (in Cantonese dubbing). Sometimes I re-watch certain episodes because I thought Maruko-chan’s family dynamic were quite similar to ours (and sometimes my parents would compare me to her aha). She definitely holds a special place in my heart.

Emma Skye: Believe or not, she was my main inspiration to pursue forensics before I ended up with a crappy grade in Biology and decided to do Archaeological Science at university instead. I really liked her in Ace Attorney since I thought she was smart and witty. If anyone remembers this, there was a segment where you dusted for prints and kid me was like, “woah I wanna do that when I grow up.” But then life changed ahaha

Annabeth Chase: She was my favourite character when I started reading the Percy Jackson series at the end of high school. I liked how Annabeth could stay strong and determined especially during the events of House of Hades. Can't wait to see the TV adaption soon!

Papyrus: The Cool Dude himself. He might have been why I got Tumblr in the first place haha. But for real, I like how he has a kind heart with how he interacts with Frisk and Sans. He is genuinely a big ball of friendship.

Adora: Strong women. Can transform into a giant, buff woman with a sword. But on a serious note, I enjoyed Adora’s character development and how she never gives up on trying to save her friends.

Goro Majima: Yes, the one-eyed scrunkly bastard is inspiring, don’t @ me. Jokes aside, I was torn on drawing the 1988 version since I was interested in Majima’s character in Yakuza 0. Then I thought about it, and looked at his journey throughout the series and was like, “Y’know he’s flamboyant and free, and if I had to choose a version it might as well be the one in Yakuza: Like a Dragon where he seems happy and reunited with Saejima.” So, there you go. Flamboyant and free, and to paraphrase Nishida in Yakuza 3: “He might not look like it, but he’s soft on the inside.”
