With the help of three citizen scientists, an unknown Cryptocoryne population was found in one of the streams of Zamboanga del Norte province, Philippines, in March 2023. After careful morphological studies and literature review, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and their collaborators confirmed the unknown species was distinctive and new to science. The new species was named Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis to refer to Zamboanga Peninsula where this species was discovered. The study was published in the Nordic Journal of Botany on Oct. 17. Cryptocoryne zamboangaensis is a perennial, amphibious, large herb. It is similar to Cryptocoryne aponogetifolia for very long leaves and a long spathe tube, but recognized by a narrowly ovate, about 2 cm broad, densely verrucose bright purple spathe limb with a distinct narrow collar.

(Long post but this is important so please read)
For those living outside of the Philippines and are currently unaware of the ongoing situation in my country, we just had our elections yesterday on May 9 (Monday) and results have been coming in since last night. Bong Bong Marcos, the son of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos is in the lead for president while his VP candidate Sara Duterte, daughter of the current president, also in the lead. And this is bad. REALLY BAD.
I can't give a complete and comprehensive summary of Ferdinand Marcos' rule in a single post but this is all you need to know. A lot of people were killed, tortured, and raped during his time, and those were only the ones who were found and accounted for. We still have so many missing victims until now that we call them the Los Desaparecidos or The Disappeared. The Marcos family also stole about billions from the country and her people. They literally lavished in their homes while children were dying from starvation.
Already foreign investors are pulling out which can mean really bad things for our economy which not many of us can afford right now.
And as for Sara Duterte if you've heard of her father and the War on Drugs then you'd understand why we're so apprehensive of having another Duterte have a seat of power in the national government.
As of now there are already allegations of the elections being rigged. Some might think it's a wild conspiracy theory but with the history of these political dynasties and the corrupt system of our government I can't help but agree that something's wrong.
Because before elections even officially closed there have already been reports of about 1800 faulty Vote Counting Machines (VCM) , the highest number in election history with VCMs rejecting ballots or malfunctioning effectively delaying the voting process by hours which resulted with registered voters being turned away by COMELEC because they didn't make the cut-off of 7 p.m.
And speaking of COMELEC (they're basically the committee in charge of handling the elections) their handling of the whole elections is just downright incompetent and shady. There have been allegations of ballots being manipulated and only a few hours has passed since the tallying of votes has begun and somehow they've covered more than 85 % of the precincts just not all over the country but also overseas. Which is questionable considering that about 50% of the country's VCMs are broken.
There is also a noticeable trend with how Leni Robredo, Marcos' most serious opposition who beat him for the position of VP in the 2016 elections, always has 47% of the total transmitted votes for Marcos during every election update.
(tl;dr)
I know that Tumblr can be very Western centric but this is serious. The elections were badly handled from the start and it looks like we're heading towards another Marcos administration thanks to a combination of Filipinos who would rather deny our history and corrupt government officials. Please help us keep a spot light on the Philippines because we're not going down without a fight if Marcos wins.

Baguio was amazing! If it weren't for my exam, i would've never left lol
i actually never expected to have such an amazing time in Baguio because of the responsibilities i was leaving back home. i came there expecting i have to work half of the time and study for a big exam right after we go home but never actually did those lol i seized every minute of our stay in Baguio and explored as much as i can. i also have to mention the amazing climate there. i really love how cold it is in the morning and at night. it feels like i'm on a different country. not to mention the mist. i miss seeing mist around the trees because it looks and feels very mysterious and i'm all for it!
someday, i will definitely come back there with more time and money 💯💯

Disappointed
The Philippine Election is still a hot topic in the country. It was a sad victory for some of us who have hoped for the best. Martial law became the scariest part of history in the Philippines. Thousands were killed, tortured, and abused under Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. Among them is my mother who has dramatically suffered during that time. It was horrifying as she said.
Now that we face another Marcos, I am not hoping for the best but instead, change the system that is run by oligarchs and the elite society. Not to mention that disinformation is rampant in the country where many people would rather believe in fake news than the actual truth. I am actually disheartened by this because I cannot do so much with only the little resources that I have. Also, people around me would also ridicule me for supporting another candidate which is totally absurd.

Also disappointed by a lot of adults who cannot handle young people. They treat us like we are not grateful for everything that the government did for us. Like, do we owe them something? We are future taxpayers so it's not really our obligation to thank them. It's a win-win situation actually.
Teachers are also not effective. In our class, one teacher is biased over the election. She is clearly siding with what she is favoring. Also used degrading terms for people who voted for the opposition. I'm honestly annoyed but I choose not to talk about it in the class because I don't wanna create tension. Of course, they'll throw the "respect my opinion" card again. Nothing new.
My only hope is for a better Philippines. I just want to say that fuck the Marcoses. Sending my best regards with 7 counts of graft.

Another full day in Manila beginning with a tour of the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, detailing and honoring the history and the role of the Philippines in World War II - a humbling and illuminating visit. Many, many American soldiers are buried here, and I realize that I know very little about this part of Philippines-US history and intend to learn more. In spite of the solemn setting, we had an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide (Carlos, aka Mr. Google) who kept things respectfully light and fun. Grateful for the experience 🇵🇭🇺🇸🎖️🪖✝️✡️🌳 . . @joatwood @zaneta.encarnacion @audie.decastro @livingcatrina @i.am.pam #philppines #manila #manilaamericancemetery #manilaamericancemeteryandmemorial #ww2 #philippineshistory #history #generalmcarthur #ishallreturn #travel #filipino #filipina #tattooer #ladytattooer #mestiza #filam #filipinoamerican #worldwar2 #leyte #buffalosoldiers (at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoC2FCFOSTD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Doing a literary analysis of a poem about PGMA (Gloria Macapagal Aroyo) and reading about how she wasn't impeached for the "Hello, Garci" scandal cause the house failed to get enough votes. On that very same article one of the reccomended articles was about the senators who opposed the contempt of court charged on Quiboloy (a pastor who's been accused of rape, child molestation and human trafficking.)
