During Women's History Month we are celebrating MTA Arts & Design women artists who are making history through their artistic practices. #WomenMakingHistoryMondays
Philemona Williamson was recently included in Art and Object's list of "Contemporary Black Artists You Should Know More about." Williamson's work is currently on view at Steven Harvey Fine Art Gallery, along with the work of many great women artists including #MTAArts artist Andrea Belag (Avenue U, F station), through March 20, 2021. Imagery from Williamson's #MTAArts fused glass artwork “Seasons” (2007) at the Livonia Avenue (L) station in Brooklyn was paired with Marilyn Nelson's poem "A Strange Beautiful Woman" for #PoetryInMotion in 2016. A special shout out to these incredible artists -- and strange, beautiful women everywhere -- on this #InternationalWomensDay.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH. If you haven’t seen Philemona Williamson’s unique work take this month’s call as a reason to do so. Her work illuminates blackness while transcending the very concept. Filled with revelatory objects of every era from the Topsy Turvey dolls of slave times to the occasional odd errant lobster all floating through the composition of her works. Resonating influences as diverse as 18th century graphic artist Winsor McCay and the provocative Portuguese painter Paula Rego, she shape-shifts through art history while exploring childhood myths and illusions, insecurities and longings in a world of dreamlike proportions where bodies and tables and iconic objects have become unmoored. She juxtaposes highly specific contemporary understandings of race to the eternal and universal experiences of the imagination navigating freely in richly colored narratives. Her work is every bit as much a call to action and contemplation as the poetry of young Amanda Gorman and equally liberating. A few images to follow. #philemonawilliamson #amandagorman #blackhistorymonth #paularego #littlenemo #winsormccay #benningtoncollege #prattinstitute https://www.instagram.com/p/CLE4EGzFBiy/?igshid=1ajvtt1wonk26
