West Side High fic: Part 3
Part 1 can be found here and part 2 can be found here. When we left our protagonists last time, they were in school, Dan, the man with a plan, and Phil, the gay who wants to stay out of the way. I’m glad there’s an appreciation for my storytelling here; it’s not the easiest writing in second person and in present tense, and I’m trying my best. This isn’t how I normally write, but it makes for a fun change. And anyway, who’s to say this isn’t really happening? If you believe in the multiverse theory, then technically, this is in fact happening somewhere. This is real. Did I even make it up if that’s true? Who knows. We can return to the story, anyways, for now.
Dan sits in the town library, going through old texts. Perhaps it would be easier using the library’s search system, as all the works he’s going through are uploaded into the system anyway, but he has a thing about being authentic. He likes these old texts, and is always excited when a new one joins the library’s collections. He has a particular fondness for philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato, as cliche as that is. He’d love to meet them someday, but for now, he’s only interested in local history. If you’ll remember, he’s looking for anyone who might have been able to get out of an arranged marriage. They don’t really sort books on that kind of topic, though, so he’s not really coming up with anything. Like at all. Like, maybe he really should use the library search system, even if it goes against his aesthetic. Okay. Only because Phil would kill him if he didn’t.
Dan puts the book he’d been skimming through back and walks over to the VR section of the library. He finds an open room and flicks the switch so that the sign above the door changes from “Vacant” to “Occupied”. The language reminds him of a port-o-potty. Yes, sadly those still exist in this universe.
He goes over to where the contact lenses are and inserts one into his eye. This pulls up the menu in front of his face, where he sorts through turning on the search engines he needs and starts typing in key words. There’s a voice control option, but he feels odd anytime he speaks in an empty room.
We won’t go too into depth about his search, as it’s quite boring, and I don’t want to write boring, and you don’t want to read boring, but he does in fact find a suitable ghost to summon. Her name is Mikaleiagh, and she died in what would be 2127 our time. She was destined to marry her husband Ron, but for some reason that wasn’t mentioned in the text, it never happened. So that night, when Dan gets home, he goes up to his room and starts to work on summoning her.
“Yeah, I didn’t end up marrying him because I killed him,” Mikaleigh told Dan, picking at her ghostly nail polish. “If you want to get rid of your betrothed, kill him. Just be careful not to get caught, or you’ll end up like me.”
Dan sighs and ends his seance. He hasn’t done his homework, but he feels so discouraged he goes to bed anyway.
The next day in school, Phil corners Dan in the boy’s bathroom.
“Did you think of anything yet?” he asks eagerly.
Dan rubs his sleepy eyes. “Yeah, but it didn’t work out. I need to think of something else.”
“Well hurry up,” Phil whispers harshly, throwing an arm up to place his hand on the wall behind Dan, pinning Dan to the wall on one side. Dan pushes Phil’s hand off the wall.
“What’s the big fucking rush?” he hissed, getting upset that Phil was suddenly putting all this pressure on him to do something about their stupid arranged marriage while Phil did who-knows-what.
Phil blinks, caught off guard from the question, and seems to ponder his answer. He decides to avoid answering however, and with a “Never your mind, just get on it,” exits to boy’s bathroom to make it to his next class.
