RIP Peter Brown - lyricist for Cream and Jack Bruce - musician, producer, poet. One of my favorite JB/PB collaborations - written for Jack’s wife, Janet. ❣️

Jack Bruce, with his Danelectro Longhorn, and Felix Pappalardi, with Eric Clapton's Gibson SG "The Fool", during the recording of Disraeli Gears (spring 1967).
"[...]From the American Press I have always been resented from my association with Cream. They're stupid to start with, they're as dumb as anybody could be, they don't have the education to cope with a lot of the music that is going down they're just dumb. They believe that music started and ended in the Delta and you and I know that's not the story, but you can't tell them that.
They feel that I meddled with Cream, they wanted an advanced Mayall's Blues Breakers but I didn't give a flying f–k what they wanted. I had a band in the studio and Jack Bruce was extremely important to that band in fact, if not the driving force musically in that band, and as a producer I had to cope with what was happening there and not what I thought Rolling Stone Magazine wanted.[...]"
- Felix Pappalardi (Sounds Magazine interview, Nov 20, 1971)
"[...]Ertegün is credited with bringing in Felix Pappalardi to produce the band and looking back it would appear to be a shrewd move, but it must be realized that Cream came very close to splitting up before it's American recording career had even begun as Jack was devastated initially by this move and came very close to leaving the band at that time.
He was inconsolable and believed that his contribution to the band was being underestimated and his contributions were being trivialised by the record company boss.
Fortunately, due to some very effective diplomacy and a lot of very positive vibes towards Jack from Felix, things smoothed out sufficiently well to be able to establish a working relationship and in fact Felix and Jack became good friends once it became very obvious who was the master[Jack] and who was the pupil[Felix], but it was touch-and-go for a nail-biting time and Ahmet [Ertegün] played no part at all in achieving such a positive outcome [...]"
- Bob Adcock (via Facebook)
"[We] got very close. We were real buddies; at one point I'd say he was my best friend in the whole world. I was the best man at his wedding"
- Jack Bruce (Jack Bruce: Composing Himself, 2010)

Pete Brown, countercultural poet, singer, and lyricist dies, aged 82
What a fascinating figure; Brown was so much more than Cream's frequent lyricist.
It seems that Martin Scorsese was a huge admirer of Brown's work, and that we can expect a Pete Brown documentary from Scorsese later this year.
RIP, Pete Brown. We know that the upcoming documentary will make it seem as though you never left.

「Alto Artistry」'44〜.49

the first iteration of the dream team is so funny.
imagine youre a regular new yorker and you’re being attacked by santas or bugs or devils at an art show and things are weird but you also can’t quite tell what’s actually happening (got to love umbral arcana) ? but you’re scared out of your mind until a drunk lady punches the scary monster in the face and the guy who’s clearly a drug dealer starts blasting fire out of his hands?? maybe he’s got a lighter and some hairspray, though he’s also holding a gun? and then a very nice and serious older guy is keeping everything calm and encouraging his friends and you think everything is going to be okay, especially because this nice sweet firefighter is making sure everyone’s safe. and you think he looks like mr march from the calendar!
then a massive rat man summons some crocodiles or a pack of rats or a cockroach that is unusually juicy and then broadway legend misty moore literally insults a monster to death whilst indiscriminately flirting with her friends.
and when it’s all over they’re acting like this is business as usual. and maybe you’re confused for like three minutes until you remember this is new york — who else would save you but a broadway star, a rat, a firefighter, a drug dealer, an alcoholic and kingston brown from uptown who helped you jumpstart your car three months ago
