A unit of filthy whelp hussars for Turnip28. I leaned into the root horse weirdness with less armored steeds and gave them a bizarre color scheme to stand out. It’s less blue in person but still kinda blue. Everything about them reads speed.
This is maybe my favorite unit in the regiment and also the game. Having more bodies made them harder to delete than other cavalry even allowing for their mediocre vulnerability.

And here it is. The first model of 2023, and the first fully painted Perry Miniatures Agincourt knight. Those gold bits on the green are supposed to be crescent moons, but they look more like bananas. Ah well.
I think he turned out okay.
I guess he’s going to be one of the first Adretian knights, or a man-at-arms at least.
Oh, I also took these pictures with my new phone’s camera, which I’m really impressed by.

Finally done with my holiday break. And what did I DO on said break you ask? Loads of stuff, but these are my first painted miniatures of 2024! A unit for Silver Bayonet, the Napoleonic gothic horror skirmish game.
I present to you the crew of the Nancy, ably led by Captain Mackintosh, semi-reluctantly roped into supernatural horror-hunting by the reactivation of his naval officer's commission, and his crew of definitely stalwart and upright seamen (as well as a couple Royal Marines on loan from the Admiralty. Just to make sure none of the Navy's orders are mysteriously lost in transit and that all the financials stay present and correct.) These lads are mostly Perry Miniatures with a single representative from North Star along with various conversion bits sourced from all over, as well as my first foray into simple sculpting with green stuff epoxy resin. Also the most intensive basing that I've tried yet, to look like ship's planking. I'm quite happy with how they turned out.
Tumblr media
The individual shots of figures and descriptions are under the cut:
He's Alexander Mackintosh, nephew to the laird, and he does disdain men who are vain, the men with powdered hair!
Tumblr media
Mr Stanhope, the Marine Officer is the captain's right hand man. As mandated by the orders of the Admiralty. But he's a demon with a sword in his hand and that's quite welcome, given that there might be some actual literal demons to fight at some point or another. (He's dispensed with his normal hat plume in deference to the Captain's insistence that despite being dragooned into the King's service this IS ultimately a civilian ship.)
Tumblr media
Mr Gatkins the Royal Marine. A taciturn fellow, he shoots first and asks questions only when specifically ordered to do so by his officers.
Tumblr media
Mister Lannis is the ship's master gunner (Artillerist, in game terms) and his jaunty straw hat is very nice, thank you! (I included a chest of powder and shot from Mantic Games because I had to come up with something to denote who he is during gameplay)
Tumblr media
Dr Phillips the ship's Doctor/surgeon, and a quick and dirty sculpt of my own for his bonesaw (again, had to differentiate this guy on the tabletop. I think it's a decent job. Bonesaw with a cutlass hilt, he's a real combat medic this chap.)
Tumblr media
The venerable and curmudgeonly Mr Elms, the ship's carpenter (a Sapper, in game terms). This was the most intensive work of this whole lot: I started with a metal Perry Miniatures sailor figure, lopped his arms and head off, grabbed a pair of arms from the Oathmark Dwarf Light Infantry box and a head from the regular Dwarf Infantry box, then I sculpted an apron (luckily for me aprons are just flat sheets so it's not THAT hard) and then I grabbed a free musket from the Wargames Atlantic Afghan Tribesmen box. Whew. I think it ended up looking quite nice. Very characterful.
Tumblr media
Able Seaman MacWhorter is along for the ride and excited to show off his swordsmanship against all manner of supernatural toffs.
Tumblr media
And last but not least we've got Mr Harris, the local guide and scout. He's a crack shot and he's worth his weight in gold when the shore party is trying to keep themselves oriented on land. (This model is from North Star Military Figures and I have to say I love that most of their native american models are like this: this is just a guy, not a fantasy cowboys and indians pastiche.)
Tumblr media
Issues with this team are that the vast majority are using pistols, we've only got three muskets in the unit, that's not a lot of long range shooting, might make things difficult vs a more musket heavy warband. But ah well, it just calls for a bit of aggression, doesn't it? Get in on 'em, as I always say!

Irish Kern with Bows
Hi again! I've got another update and once again, we know 'em, we love 'em, it's more Kern!
This time I've put together block of skirmishers with bows to act in support of the gallowglass and bonnachts, or independently to harass opponents in hit-and-run attacks!
Tumblr media
The kern themselves are the usual mix of Perry and Antediluvian figures. I've included a few more drab léine compared to the bonnachts, given that these would be poorer soldiers, and unlikely to afford the fanciest saffron dye all the time
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here's the block of skirmishers screening an advance for the charging Bonnachts
Tumblr media
I hope they've come out ok! For a while I was debating whether to have them blocked in a more dense formation, to mirror the bows-and-bills of the other War of the Roses forces, but eventually decided against it in favor of the skirmishers

Prussian Jaegers skirmishing, 19th century Perry Miniatures Early 2023
Continuing the theme from my previous post, I’m also absolutely mad on light infantry these days. In the words of Marge Simpson: I just think they’re neat! Plus, no matter how many times I have it explained to me (~five times and counting) I still can’t wrap my stupid modern brain around how lining up in front of eachother and waiting for the other guy to shoot and/or lose his nerve was a good idea, and so with that in mind, I think I just appreciate the way that light infantry were designed to move about, skirmish and just get in amongst it all without having to worry about staying in a neat little line. With that in mind, here were have four Prussian Jaegers skirmishing during the Franco-Prussian war, from the absolute masters at Perry Miniatures.

In Turnip28 there aren’t any animals left except humans, so these warhorses are actually root things pulled from the mire. So taking these Agincourt knights from Perry and turning them into hideous things.
I use these as a unit of bastards, heavy cavalry that I have a bad habit of letting get in front of the rest of my army to get cut to pieces.

More turnip28 for my pike and shotte army, infantry wise, for a big game there’s three units there, but for the first few games at least I’ll be halving the units to 3 bases a unit for those who are interested, I am posting on twitter and Reddit more

Built three more models with all the plastic Perry Miniature bits I have.
Top is a lesser ranked man at arms, with full plate protection for this body and legs, with hounskull bascinet and maille aventail, while his arms are protected by padded sleeves and plate gauntlets. Made up of a torso from the Agincourt English Army and arms from the Agincourt French Infantry.
Middle is a drummer. Now, from the evidence I can find, these guys would have usually only worn civilian wear, don’t fully know why exactly but there’s that, but he’s got a bit more protection in the form a padded aketon and a baldric dagger. Torso and head are from the Agincourt English Army’s archers sprue, while the arms are from the Wars of the Roses Mercenaries Infantry command sprue.
Bottom is a trumpeter, same case as the drummer above with a padded aketon and dagger at his back (you can just see the pommel behind him). Torso is from the Agincourt French Infantry set, head from the Agincourt English Army’s archers sprue, and the trumpet is from the Wars of the Roses Infantry (bows and bills) command sprue.
Top guy works best as a sort of soldier of fortune/mercenary man-at-arms type of guy, though he is wearing a short jupon over his torso, so he could work as a lesser retainer for a lord. Musicians I’ll definitely do in livery colours for whoever their lord will be.
And again they’ll be used for models for the Adretian Empire in my fantasy story.

And with that
My box of Perry Miniatures is empty. These are the last of the Sonorian Irregulars that will be painted for the time being, because I’m outta bodies! I did it. 36 models built and painted and ready to go! And all but 3 of them built as Sonorian Irregulars for my converted 40k Imperial Guard regiment!

A Doomed Pretenders Project: Richard de la Pole, the Last White Rose
Hi again! This time, I've opted to go for the upper-bound time-wise of this project (before things get too Renaissance-y), with a command base to represent Richard de la Pole, or Richard IV, titular Duke of Suffolk and the last serious military contender for the House of York, before his death in the Battle of Pavia in 1525.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
De La Pole (and his brothers) presented a fairly serious threat to the early Tudor regime, having a stronger claim to the throne than Henry VII. While the eldest brother died in 1487 at Stoke Field, and Richard's other elder brothers arrested and/or executed by the Tudors, Richard was able to flee to Europe, where he ended up being notably charismatic, winning over a number of highly influential figures in France, the Holy Roman Empire and Hungary to support his claim. Plans were made under both Louis XII and Francis I to support an invasion of England with Scottish support, and with rumblings of Yorkist sympathisers in England itself and the earls of Desmond and Kildare in Ireland happening as well, it's no surprise that the Tudors saw the pretender as a problem. Adding to their concerns, Richard de la Pole had become a seasoned battlefield commander during the start of the 16th century, leading forces of Landsknecht on behalf of France in Italy and Navarre, giving him vital experience that the earlier Yorkist pretenders definitely lacked! First up on the base are a pair of retainers with halberds, to act as bodyguards for de la Pole. Desmond Seward in The Last White Rose mentions that during Richard's stay in Metz in the 1510s he retained a group of musicians and bodyguards in blue and grey livery, so I've used that as the basis for the colours on the livery jackets. I thought it was a bit unusual that unlike every other de la Pole Richard decided to opt for grey instead of yellow in his livery, but my guess is that it may be a deliberate call-back to his grandfather Richard Duke of York's blue and white livery during the War of the Roses. With that in mind, I've added a white rose to the chest of the livery jackets, to tie-in de la Pole to York, and as a pastiche of Henry Tudor's own retainers. Both retainers are based on Steel Fist standing dollies, with Perry Early-Tudor heads and medieval arms
Tumblr media
Next up are the two standard bearers on the base (one for Richard de la Pole's personal arms, and the other for his livery banner). One standard bearer is an unmodified War of the Roses figure in older armour, while the other is a liveried retainer built using the same method as the two others
Tumblr media
Also on the base is a knight, pointing out something on the horizon to Richard. I'm using him to represent an attaché from France or Foix to provide battlefield support for Richard, or alternatively an English exile, adventurer or opportunist who decided to throw in with de la Pole. The figure is one of the excellent Steel Fist Miniatures Italian Wars foot knights without any modifications
Tumblr media
And finally, the pretender himself, Richard de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk. Like the other knight, Richard is a Steel Fist Miniatures Italian Wars foot knight. I love the pose for this figure in particular for a commander, and Richard de la Pole seemed like an excellent excuse to use the figure!
Tumblr media
I've painted de la Pole's jacket in his livery colours of blue and grey, and like with his retainers, I've given him a white rose livery badge (only larger!). I've not found any decisive evidence for any livery badges used by Richard, compared to his father, or older brother John, but I made the assumption that seeing as just about everyone among his contemporaries refers to him as the White Rose, that he must have some effective 'branding' and actively cultivated that association. I decided the beardy head quite nicely captures the look of the portrait that shows up on Google when you search for Richard de la Pole (although, I think it may be actually of Charles III, Duke of Bourbon instead from what I've found!)
Tumblr media
And finally, a couple of pictures of the command base on a grassy field
