2 May 2023: Queen Rania inaugurated the Wijdan Art Space building at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts (JNGFA) Park in Jabal Al Weibdeh, in the presence of Princess Wijdan bint Fawaz Al-Hashemi and other members of the Royal Family.
Named in honor of Princess Wijdan, president of the Royal Society of Fine Arts (RSFA), the Wijdan Art Space includes studios and spaces for mentored courses and workshops in drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, and art appreciation. These training opportunities, to be announced on all JNGFA social media platforms, will cater to students, emerging artists, and hobbyists of all ages.
The Wijdan Art Space also includes outdoor areas for hosting cultural, artistic, and musical evenings, as well as a café serving trainees and visitors. (Source: Petra)
During the event, it was also announced that the original building housing the JNGFA had also been named after Princess Wijdan, a decision by the RSFA Board of Trustees to acknowledge Her Royal Highness’ role in supporting art and artists over the past 44 years.
“Here, in what was a single-story house featuring a collection of 77 artworks, a dream was born,” said JNGFA Director General Dr. Khaled Khreis. “Princess Wijdan’s passion for art led her to establish the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in this very building.”
“This monument to art and culture, which now includes four buildings and a park, is not only a platform for artists from Jordan and the Arab World, but also as a bridge between cultures and civilizations conveying the message of coexistence, love, and peace through art,” Khreis added.
In 1979, Princess Wijdan decided to dedicate herself to the promotion of art in Jordan and the creation of an accessible space for Arab art, leading her to found the RSFA and, one year later, the JNGFA, established in a rented villa fitted with dozens of pieces of art, most of which came from her private collection.
Today, the gallery has 3,000 works in its permanent collection, and has grown to become a dynamic institution comprising four buildings, a park, and various projects, such as its Touring Museum and The Factory Platform, which aims to involve the local community in all aspects of the creative process.
Following the establishment of the JNGFA, Her Royal Highness was inspired to further her education by studying art movements in the region. She received a doctorate in Islamic Art from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in 1993, and has since written and edited several books on the history of Islamic Art.
In addition to teaching at three leading Jordanian universities, the Princess also founded the Higher Institute of Islamic Art and Architecture at Al al-Bayt University and the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Jordan, where she served as its first dean.

One Plaza Landmark in Düsseldorf
4 Jun 2022
Design: HPP Architects
Location: Düsseldorf, Germany
Photos: HPP Architects / MOMENI Group, Visualisation: Brick
One Plaza, Germany
Situated at the Kennedydamm, entrance to Düsseldorf’s inner city, this building, together with the L’Oréal Germany headquarters and the vertical campus Eclipse, will add another impressive element designed by HPP Architects to the urban skyline. The mixed-use building with approx. 45,000 sqm of gross floor area is to be realised for the MOMENI Group and, alongside its function as an office building, will also provide space for special uses, gastronomy and local services. With its characteristic facade, generous enclosed outside spaces, usable roof gardens and modern workplaces, One Plaza stands for identity, sustainability and flexibility.
Organised by Archivibe in collaboration with Valcucine, the installation “LE3DERS” at Milan Design Week 2022 shows the 3D models of LEED-certified buildings as an augmented reality exhibition through an Instagram filter. With its aspiration for LEED Gold certification and its conception via a 3D model as a digital twin, the ONE PLAZA is part of this group of projects by internationally renowned architecture practices.
The building composition, consisting of three wings grouped around a central inner courtyard area, will create a sculptural entity with distinctive architecture and high recognition value. The dynamic design language is applied consistently across all the dimensions of the building, including the facade.
The two-storey elevation at each corner opens up ONE PLAZA on every side. Three generous entrance points are created which connect the ground floor area with the surrounding district. At the same time the height offset at the upper levels of the facade creates a striking roof landscape that offers protection from the wind for office tenants enjoying the gardens. “The diagonal lines of the curtain facade with its vertical, cleverly folded aluminium panels underlines the dynamism and lightness of the whole building and creates an intriguing play of light and shadow”, explains Volker Weuthen, HPP’s Senior Partner responsible for the project.
The building offers users a high degree of flexibility and the opportunity to implement every possible office concept from open plan to a cellular or combi office design. The permanent workplaces are arranged close to the facade. And in addition, in the central zones there are communicative working environments for flexible use with a range of options for employees. The enclosed courtyard serves as an internal meeting place, a central green lung, which, together with the roof gardens, increases the ecological quality of the building and creates a link to the open spaces of the surrounding area.
The fluent and naturalistic design of the open spaces is in powerful contrast to the sharp-cornered and highly compacted building design. Inspired by the leitmotif of “forest home”, the greening of the outdoor spaces, courtyard, roof terraces and sloping roof areas creates an urban oasis that lends added value to the working environment of users as well as increasing the urban quality of life of the neighbourhood. The additional green areas will have a positive impact on air quality, microclimate, heat and noise pollution, as well as comfort and well-being.
Besides these measures, many other green building criteria are fulfilled, so that ONE PLAZA is aiming to obtain both LEED Gold and Wired Score Platinum certification. Sustainable mobility is supported not only by the very good links to the public transport network, but also by electric charging stations and the unusually high number of 180 bike parking spaces, which are also available for the public to use.
The existing building on the developed site was already dismantled last year. Work on the new construction will start in August 2022, completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

RICHARD SERRA
Sculptor of massive metal artworks
Famed American artist and sculptor Richard Serra, known for turning curving walls of rusting steel and other malleable materials into large-scale pieces of outdoor artwork that are now dotted across the world, died Tuesday at his home in Long Island, N.Y.
Tumblr media
He was 85. Considered one of his generation’s most preeminent sculptors, the San Francisco native originally studied painting at Yale University but turned to sculpting in the 1960s, inspired by trips to Europe.
His death was confirmed Tuesday night by his lawyer, John Silberman, whose firm is based in New York. He said the cause of death was pneumonia.
His works include the 1987 Cor-Ten sculpture My Curves Are Not Mad, a familiar sight in Dallas’ Nasher Sculpture Center garden.
The work consists of two steel walls positioned parallel to each other, creating a narrow, shadowy passage for visitors to walk through and catch a glimpse of the sky above.
Tumblr media
In 2002, the installation of Serra’s Vortex was completed at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art. In a Dallas Morning News story at the time, the sculpture — a monumental 67-foot, 230-ton piece — was described as “surprisingly weightless despite its mass, and as elegant as it is assertive.”
Known by his colleagues as the “poet of iron,” Serra became world-renowned for his large-scale steel structures such as monumental arcs, spirals and ellipses.
He was closely identified with the minimalist movement of the 1970s.
Serra’s work started to gain public attention in 1981, when he installed a 120-foot-long and 12-foot-high curving wall of raw steel that splits the Federal Plaza in New York City.
The sculpture, called Tilted Arc, generated swift backlash from people who worked there and a fierce demand that it be removed.
Tumblr media
The sculpture was later taken down, but Serra’s popularity in the New York art scene had been cemented.
Most of Serra’s large-scale works are welded in Cor-Ten steel, but he also worked with other nontraditional materials such as rubber, latex, neon — as well as molten lead, which Serra threw against a wall or floor to create his Splash series in his early career.
His works have been installed in landscapes and included in the collections of museums across the world, from The Museum of Modern Art in New York to the deserts of Qatar.
In 2005, eight major works by Serra were installed permanently at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain. Carmen Jimenez, the exhibition organizer, said Serra was “beyond doubt the most important living sculptor.”
Born to a Russian-Jewish mother and a Spanish father in San Francisco, Serra was the second of three sons. He started drawing at a young age and was inspired by the time he spent at a shipyard where his father worked as a pipe fitter. Before his turn to sculpting, Serra worked in steel foundries to help finance his education at the Berkeley and Santa Barbara campuses of the University of California. He then went on to Yale, graduating in 1964.

All about painting
- Painting is away for artists to express their ideas, emotions, opinions, beliefs and many other expressions. They do this through visual language by creating certain aesthetic qualities in a two- dimensional way.
-Paintings are made up of shapes, lines, colours, tones, textures, and other marks. This creates volume, space, movement and light within work. All these aspects are combined in order to convey whatever the artist wants to express to the viewer.
-mediums: tempura, fresco, oil, acrylic, watercolour, as well as other water based paints such as, ink, gouache, encaustic and casein.
-forms of painting: mural, canvas on easel, panel, miniature, scroll, screen, fan and other more modern forms.
cultural traditions and painting: tribes, religions, guilds, royal courts, and states had a high influence and controlled the form, imagery and subject matter of paintings. They also decided whether a painting was for ritualistic, devotional, decorative, entertaining or educational purposes.
- Due to fine art, many artists began combining other mediums and ways of working with painting. For example artists combined painting with sculpture and collage.

How does this relate to my work?:
As I have chosen to utilise paint as my main medium within this project I decided to research painting and painting techniques. May sound simple and obvious, however, paint is not a medium that I usually gravitate towards. Therefore, I felt it was necessary to research the medium, during which I discovered techniques and ways of working that I was not aware off. I plan to use some of these techniques within my work. For example I will make use of the technique Sgraffito, sfumato, impasto, acrylic painting, action painting, easel painting and using canvas as a surface to paint.

3D Class Ephemeral Art Assignment 2/20/2024
The next assignment for this class involves creating Ephemeral Art.
The assignment will take three weeks to be completed, starting on 2/20/20224 and ending at start of class on 3/08/2024.
These sculptures will be contenders to be juried for the student show. I need everyone to stay on task and do a good job for that.
Materials needed for this assignment:
GLUE GUN
TWIGS found around school
Additionally, this assignment will have a photoshoot component once work is completed and that will happen during class on 3/08/2024.
There are various definitions for this type of art , from transient to non-permanence, art that lives in an instant and or that is short lived.
For this class we are going with the concept of impermanence .
All of you will start collecting twigs tomorrow during class. And you will continue to collect them throughout the week as you will need a lot of them to create this artwork.
Make sure you get twigs that have  fallen from trees to create this work. Do not break twigs from the trees or use flimsy twigs.
Notice that I have stated twigs fallen from trees. That means that I do not want students to harm or destroy nature to get your materials.
You can find fallen twigs as you go to around around school. Since it rained a lot over the weekend, you will probably find a lot of them throughout the campus.
You will go outside tomorrow during class to begin to collect them.
Make sure the twigs are free of insects and other natural materials such as mold and little creatures.
Your aim is to find as many twigs as possible to build your sculpture. Preferably thin twigs and only a few thick ones to create the base.
Once you have gathered your materials, you will work slowly and deliberately to develop your sculpture.
Using a hot glue gun you will join the twigs together in a careful way so that the joining parts do not show excess glue.
Students will create a sculpture that measures approximately 18 -20 inch organic (non geometrical ) self standing sculpture.
I added photos below that shows you work that has been done in previous semesters for you to look at.
The main concept here is to follow the angle and curvature of the twig as you connect them to create a self standing structure.
Stay away from trying to impose your thoughts onto the form, instead let the form evolve.
Stay free and open to develop and allow the form to evolve before you.
Tumblr media
Notice that all lines begin and end connected , nothing is loose or out of place, nothing is forced or imposed. The curvature or direction of the twig determines the direction of the form to be developed.
Tumblr media
More photos below:
Tumblr media
Notice the different approaches to create this work.
These are all examples of different outcomes from students who have created these sculptures in various years.
I will show more student examples tomorrow in class .
Once completed, you will take your sculpture outdoors around school on the last day of the assignment and you will find five different outdoor locations to photograph it from different views .
The idea is that you allow the artwork to be shown in a natural habitat, in this case around school.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING THE FOLLOWING TO CLASS TOMORROW:
Completed carved soaps with base.
Glue gun & glue sticks.
