what are those marker pens that you used in your exam 2 moon doodle? are they felt tips? can i buy 'em online? i like how they look on your sketchbook, but maybe its the type ya use. what's your current sketchbook brand?
sorry just curious, take your time answerin
yo yo! no problemo!
they're pentel brush sign pens! they're water-based, felt-tip pens with a flexible nib:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i bought them online from amazon as birthday present a while back, so you may be able to buy them online, depending on your location (i'm from Canada!) they also come in a pack of "standard" colours, like your usual red, orange, yellow, etc. pack, but i don't have that pack 😅
i included two swatch pages so you can see how they look on different papers. the left one is my pocket sketchbook (the same sketchbook that the Moon doodle is on), which has smooth paper. whereas the right swatch page is on my larger sketchbook, which has textured paper (which I think might be for dry mediums... but oh well). you can see on the left swatches, the colours are lighter but a bit inconsistent (you can see some speckling). but on the right swatches, the colours are deeper and the lines show more feathering, but the colours are fairly consistent. neither of these bother me too much though, because it's these happy little accidents that make traditional art fun (and to drop kick my perfectionism)
also! just an extra note, pentel also sells a very similar looking pen but the tip is not flexible. so if you don't like brush pens, that's an option, but i believe it only comes in the standard colour pack. if you like these colours, i think the brush pen is your only option (but as far as brush pens go, these are fairly beginner friendly!)
as for my sketchbook... that's tougher to answer 😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's a pocket sketchbook i got from my local dollar store, and they don't even carry this size anymore 😭 they carry larger sizes, but i specifically wanted something small that i can put in my pocket and literally just doodle wherever i am. i don't have a lot of info on the brand or the paper quality, but i can tell you it's a bit yellow, as smooth as printer paper but slightly thinner than printer paper, so my markers and fineliners will show through the other page. i included a photo of a spread in my sketchbook where you can see the markers and lines on the other side of the pages showing through (also featuring that exam Moon doodle, some very rough character design explorations, and @starriegalaxy's Fear Factor boys)
but as always, i try not to fixate on the paper or the colours too much when i'm just sketching. my sketchbook is a place for me to experiment and play, and drawing on a cheap sketchbook with markers that bleed through or don't colour smoothly helps me to throw perfection out the window and just draw because it doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be

Hello! I wanted to ask what brands you like to buy traditional art supplies from. I've been buying Winsor & Newton products along with some Faber Castell stuff and I wanna see what you use and recommend.
Thank you and have a great day! :)
I mix and match depending on needs. People will swear by one brand, and an equal amount of people think it's mid at best.
For example: Windsor and Newton never behaves nicely for me. I live in a primarily hot, dry climate and so working wet consistently is a non-starter. If I'm doing plein air, the paints WILL dry out. And I've found M Graham to be the best quality paint I can purchase in a tube that won't crack when dry, and rewets good as new. It owes this quality to its honey binder. I also love me Beam Paints, an indigenous paint company in Canada that, like M Graham, uses honey binder. It's pricey but one set goes a LONNG way.
I tend to seek out brands beyond Windsor and Newton too because WnN is so common, I just want to see what else there is. And I've been rewarded for that search.
Faber and Castell served me well for an initial set of ink liners (similar to micron), but I'm more in favor of Japanese brands nowadays. Their scripting techniques mean a wide array of accessible drawing tools with the kind of flex and bounce far superior quality to felt tip pens in Western media. They last too. I have 10+ yr old Pentel Pocket Brushes that I continue to use.
I've been having fun watching a lot of Youtube videos by artists describing their preferred materials. Do note: for actual shopping suggestions take them from the ones who draw or paint like you want to. I've seen people recommend Himi gouache all over Youtube, but most gouache painters would give you a litany of reasons why it's not a good investment beyond "fun to play with". Thing is, Himi sends gouache sets all over art-Youtube and whenver you get free stuff, you're gonna want to say nice things in return. Keep that in mind.
But it's still the same advice: get what you need based on your needs. Don't get super expensive stuff if you're just trying out, but don't get stuff that's such subpar quality that you want to chuck the media at the wall in frustration (You want to make that wannabe Jackson Pollock on purpose at least). There's plenty of cheaper and mid-tier media that's perfectly find for long term use.
But an all-around solid recommendation is Canson paper. Canson is imo way better than Strathmore and at about the same price point and just as common. It can take a beating. Get a Canson sketchbook. Any of them are good. I love Canson.

Undying Tales 2 : il s'agit du plongeon à bec blanc. Inspiré d'une légende d'Amérique du Nord
Pentel et encres Jacques Herbin sur papier coloré. , format A5.
Disponibilité de l'original : ✅
Légende du plongeon à bec blanc :
🇺🇲 "The mournful and beautifully poignant cry of the loon can be heard skimming across the waters at dawn and dusk. The Tsimshian people who live in Canada and Alaska have a story of how the loon got its white necklace of feathers. Loon assisted a blind man, restoring his vision by taking him under his wing and swimming swiftly under the mirror clear waters of a lake. After several circuits of the lake, when Loon and the man emerged, his sight was restored. He gifted Loon his traditional Tsimshian necklace, and it melted across Loon’s neck to create the white pattern of feathers around the bird’s ruff."

Art v. Artist 2022
Tumblr media
It’s been a very busy year with lots of change, creativity and conversation. I have continued refining my art while exploring more watercolor and gouache but also playing more with graphite. My perpetual journal was a great experience but I put aside for a little bit while working on other projects. I have enjoyed my relationship over the year with Pentel Canada and Etchr which provided the opportunity for me to explore new products but also meet new creatives and share some great materials. One of my biggest challenges was trying black watercolor paper from Legion Paper. The four pieces I completed made me realize there was so much more potential and it also led me to acrylic. I painted so many insects this year in watercolor and will do more in 2023 but for some reason I was totalled distracted with cats which is why I highlighted three. The lynx in pencil was the most special this year. My journey will continue in all areas with a much larger focus on acrylic which I am finding daunting but also very exciting. There will be a few larger pieces to come in 2023. I am working on the final episode of the podcast for this year and will hit 100 episodes in a few months. So many wonderful conversations with fellow creatives. This final episode #91 will include a reflection about 2022 but also some of what I have planned for 2023. I didn’t get to everything I had planned this year but I am happy with the result. I also would to thank all of you for your ongoing support. Whether it is supporting the podcast directly through Patreon, Buy Me a Paintbrush or via message, comment and like. Your words will always find me and sometimes they find me when I need them most. I have enjoyed viewing all your work and seeing your improvement over the past 12 months. Stay curious, be well and keep drawing. -Mike . . . . . #artvsartist #artvartist2022 #watercolor #animalartist #pentel #etchr #graphite #sketchbook #difmpodcast #podcast #reflection #curiousit

Moving is the pits! Anyway, I'll be back doing art again soon so here's a quick pen sketchbook cardboard. I was surprised how well the cardboard took Pelikan ink. Fun! This was done with a Gillott 659 and 170 with Pelikan no. 17 drawing ink and a Posca white acrylic paint marker. I also did some blacks and feathering using a Pentel brush pen filled with Speedball Superblack India ink. At the time, I was drinking V-8 Splash Berry Blast juice drink mixed with Canada Dry original Seltzer water. All this is being typed on a Samsung Galaxy S21 in a crumbling Otterbox phone protector. #artwork #drawing #lineart #blackandwhite #penandink #line #art #indiaink #cardboard #underbite #europeanstyle #crosshatching #sketch #instaartist #instaart #tinymustache #littleeyes https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgyw8C9ubJq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We are sharing our visual libraries to inspire future generations of illustrators
The people from Malacateticpac, 2015, by the author, Isela Xospa.
My name is Isela Xospa and I am a freelance illustrator and editor. The graphic design project that I am developing is the result of a personal journey to find ways of asserting my indigenous identity in a contemporary and transnational context. Discovering and embracing my indigenous identity has given me the tools to build new ways of sharing an inner world that is heavily influenced by the culture of the indigenous people living south of Mexico City.
Night of the paper balloons, 2019, by the author, Isela Xospa.
For the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9, I decided to share the work of young illustrators of indigenous origin and I am sharing them again in this article. I wanted to do this because there are not many illustrators out there who identify as indigenous. The other reason was that, far from trying to stereotype, I believe it is important to publish their work as a provocation that seeks to challenge the imagery and labels assigned to indigenous people and their representations. We must not waste these opportunities to question the formats and styles that are used to represent indigenous groups in the world of illustration. These should be treated as windows of opportunity to rebel against the imposition of the non-indigenous, to make our political stances known and to put forward suggestions, outcomes and ideas to encourage the creation of new narratives and readings, made by and for the indigenous population. For us, the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is not a celebration of labels, customs or exoticisms. Instead, it must acknowledge the systematic attempts to erase us and to integrate us into a nation-state project, which has led to the loss of languages, territories, clothing, knowledge, health and opportunities of indigenous peoples. From the small place that inspired our creativity, some of us with our political views and others with the prevailing need to express ourselves vividly and visually, we will continue to create narratives for children, young people and adults from native populations. We hope that our stories will touch, transform and impact future generations of graphic storytellers who return to, use and embrace their culture. From our creative spaces, we share with you our visual libraries.

Mitzy Juárez
Mitzy Juárez is an illustrator and graphic designer from the Chocholteco Ngiba indigenous tribe in Oaxaca, southern Mexico. She was born and raised in a small, remote town on the plains of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, home to the area’s most beautiful natural springs. The inspiration for Mitzy's drawings comes from the people, the language and the traditions with which she grew up. Through drawing, she has found a way of preserving the knowledge that she inherited from her community—the knowledge that she carries with her wherever she goes.

Griss Romero
An element that stands out in Griss Romero's work is the jaguar, also known as “tekuani” or “tiger” and is one of the most important identity symbols in the state of Guerrero. Griss finds inspiration in the ancestral roots and culture of the Nahua community in Acatlán. She uses her art as a tool to raise awareness of the indigenous peoples in the state of Guerrero in southwestern Mexico, and to showcase their agricultural beliefs and rituals. Griss currently has a piece featured in the Poetics of Colour virtual art exhibition and will soon feature in the virtual exhibition “FROM MY WINDOW — Longing of an Artist in Quarantine”.

Gil Kupyum (Gilberto Delgado)
Gilberto Kupyum is from Tlahuitoltepec Mixe, an indigenous community located in Oaxaca's northwest region, an area of fog and forest. In his work, he uses themes such as nature, oral tradition and music, which he captures in various media, for example, painting, screen printing, engraving, lithography and ceramics. His real name is Gilberto Delgado but is called Gil Kupyum or Mish Kupyum by his friends, which means “woodpecker boy” in the Ayuujk language. He identifies with this bird because wood carvings are used in graphic design. Gilberto Kupyum also works with women and young people from his community. Together they make bags, shirts, notebooks, prints and other products to create a source of community employment.

Richard Newsome on always keeping your clothes on and much more
Richard Newsome is the author of the Archer Legacy; The Billionaire's Curse, The Emerald Casket and The Mask of Destiny.
In researching the trilogy, Richard traveled to England, India, France, Italy, and Greece, visiting many of the historical sites featured in the books. Richard Newsome’s debut novel, The Billionaire's Curse received rave reviews and has been sold to publishers in the US, Canada, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain and Turkey.
Richard was born in a modest-sized town in the north island of New Zealand, a little place called Wanganui on a great roiling river, his family migrated to Queensland’s Gold Coast, Australia when he was two and a half.
After finishing high school Richard deferred going to university to take up a journalism cadetship on the local newspaper, the Gold Coast Bulletin. After seven years working on various newspapers and with ABC TV and radio, Richard went to university to study economics. After graduating with first class honours he secured a job in Boston in the United States with an international strategy firm. After which Richard returned to Australia and moved to Sydney, where he moved into media, by then he was married and had started a family. In an attempt to bore his children to sleep at night, he started making up a story, which would eventually provide the basis for his Billionaire’s series of books. Richard now lives in Brisbane with his wife and three children.
What are one to three books that have greatly influenced your life?
There are many but one that stands out was written by William Peter Blatty, the author or The Exorcist.
The books is Which Way to Mecca, Jack? — it’s a memoir of the author growing up Lebanese in New York, and then moving to Beirut as a US Government information officer. It’s an insider’s outsider account of life in a familiar yet foreign land. I picked it up in the second-hand book shop around the corner from where my dad worked because the cover intrigued me.
It cost maybe 40 cents but it opened my then 12-year-old’s eyes to a large and complex world, well beyond the Gold Coast of the 1970s where I grew up. I’m sure most of the material flew straight over my innocent head, but the author had a turn of phrase that I found intriguing. It was my first experience of ‘grown up’ books.
What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?
A new Spirax A4 Notebook No. 810 ($5.49 from Officeworks). It was for my next book. I hand write the first draft of all my books, and this is my go-to notebook. The paper is just right for writing in pencil (HB 0.7mm Pentel leads for my mechanical pencil, a Lamy Scribble 0.7mm). Scratch any writer and you’ll find a frustrated stationer.
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?
I have a miserably poor attention span for any activity that does not completely entrance me within the first 30 seconds. This has ruled out several attempts at serious business, which is typified by countless hours of donkey work to actually get anything done. Luckily, this psychological tendency towards mind-wandering is ideal for story writing. If I get bored I just have to make the story more interesting. Works for me, works for the reader.
Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by?
I was bemoaning the sales figures for one of my books to a friend and the woeful lot of the author when his young daughter piped up with, ‘Just write better.’ That is my new life motto.
What is one of the best investment in a writing resource you’ve ever made?
My Lamy Scribble 0.7mm mechanical pencil. I bought it in New Zealand about 15 years ago and have written about 700,000 words with it.
Best $75 I’ve ever spent.
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
I’m not sure it’s an unusual habit, but I like to get up at 5.30am and sit on the back deck with the first coffee of the morning and listen to the birds greet the sun while I gather my thoughts for the day ahead. Solitary time is the best time.
In the last five years, what new belief, behaviour, or habit has most improved your life?
The knowledge that resting on your laurels only leads to soreness and blood clots. It’s important to press on to new and interesting challenges.
What advice would you give to a smart, driven aspiring author? What advice should they ignore?
The best advice I ever received as a beginning writer was, ‘Write it out.’ Finish the manuscript. You can plan until the end of time, but unless you actually complete the thing it doesn't count a damn.
What are bad recommendations for aspiring authors, that you hear in your often?
‘Write what you know’. How boring is that! Find out new and interesting stuff and write about that.
In the last five years, what have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
I seldom say no to anything. I’m terminally polite.
What marketing tactics should authors avoid?
Always keep you clothes on.
What new realizations and/or approaches helped you achieve your goals?
That time is going to pass anyway. Life’s clock ticks on whatever you choose to do, so you may as well choose to get stuff done. Is there any more pathetic line in movie history that ‘I coulda been a contender’ from On The Waterfront? Don't be that guy.
When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?
A cup of black Irish breakfast tea (no sugar) and a walk by the river at dusk.
Any other tips?
Once you get published, don’t be an ass.
