Vision Center without optical care loses sight of patient needs (Part 2)
Why make families get a prescription at ACH and glasses and/or contacts for their children elsewhere?
I recently wrote about the Vision Center at Akron Children’s Hospital and pointed out that, no matter how excellent the Vision Center’s eye surgeons and optometrists are, the center abandons their patients in the last mile of care.  Glasses designed for the general population rarely fit patients with atypical facial anatomy. Compared to typical children, my daughter Lyra’s facial features are…

Everything You Need to Know About Pediatric Ophthalmology
Tumblr media
When it comes to caring for our children, their health and well-being are paramount. One often-overlooked aspect of their overall health is their vision. Pediatric ophthalmology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating eye problems in children. In this blog, we'll explore everything you need to know about pediatric ophthalmology, from common eye conditions to the importance of early intervention.
Understanding Pediatric Ophthalmology
Pediatric ophthalmologists are eye doctors who have completed additional training to diagnose and treat eye problems specific to children. They are experts in managing a wide range of eye conditions, from simple refractive errors to complex surgeries. The unique challenges and characteristics of treating children's eye issues make this field distinct from adult ophthalmology.
Common Pediatric Eye Conditions
Here are some common pediatric eye conditions:
Refractive Errors: Refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism are common in children. They can affect a child's ability to see clearly and may lead to other issues if left uncorrected. Pediatric ophthalmologists can prescribe glasses or contact lenses to correct these errors.
Strabismus: Strabismus, or misalignment of the eyes, is another common issue in children. One eye may turn in, out, up, or down, causing double vision or amblyopia (lazy eye). Early intervention is essential to prevent long-term vision problems, and treatment may include eye patches, eye exercises, or surgery.
Amblyopia: Amblyopia is reduced vision in one or both eyes, often referred to as "lazy eye." It can result from uncorrected refractive errors or strabismus and needs prompt attention to restore normal vision. Treatment may involve patching the stronger eye to stimulate the weaker one.
Congenital Cataracts: Some children are born with cataracts, which cloud the eye's natural lens. Pediatric ophthalmologists can perform surgery to remove the cataract and replace the lens, restoring clear vision.
Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): ROP is a potentially blinding eye disorder that primarily affects premature infants. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina. Pediatric ophthalmologists closely monitor premature infants and, if necessary, provide laser therapy to prevent vision loss.
Ptosis: Ptosis is drooping of the upper eyelid, which can obstruct a child's vision. Surgical correction is often required to improve both the appearance and function of the eyelid.
Blocked Tear Ducts: Blocked tear ducts can lead to watery eyes and infections. A pediatric ophthalmologist can perform a simple procedure to open the blocked duct and prevent further complications.
Nystagmus: Nystagmus is an involuntary, rhythmic movement of the eyes. While it cannot be cured, pediatric ophthalmologists can help manage it to improve visual function and quality of life.
Importance of Early Detection and Treatment
Early detection and treatment of pediatric eye conditions are crucial for several reasons:
Developmental Impact: Children's visual development occurs rapidly during their early years. Undiagnosed or untreated eye issues can hinder their ability to learn and interact with their surroundings.
Amblyopia Prevention: Amblyopia can be effectively treated if detected early, typically before the age of 7. Delayed treatment may result in permanent vision loss.
Quality of Life: Correcting vision problems at a young age improves a child's quality of life, allowing them to participate fully in educational and social activities.
Safety: Some eye conditions, such as strabismus, can impact depth perception and coordination. Early intervention ensures children's safety, especially in activities like sports.
Emotional Well-being: Children with untreated eye problems may experience emotional and psychological challenges, such as low self-esteem and social isolation. Timely treatment can prevent these issues.
When to Schedule an Eye Exam for Your Child
Regular eye exams are essential for monitoring your child's eye health. Here are some general guidelines:
Infants: Schedule the first eye exam at around six months of age to ensure the eyes are developing correctly.
Preschoolers: By the age of three, your child should have another eye exam to check for refractive errors, strabismus, and amblyopia.
School-age Children: After starting school, children should have regular eye exams to monitor their vision and address any emerging issues.
Choosing a Pediatric Ophthalmologist
Selecting the right ophthalmologist in delhi for your child is crucial. Look for a specialist who is board-certified, experienced, and has a child-friendly approach. It's essential that your child feels comfortable during the examination and treatment process, as this can greatly influence the success of the care provided.
Conclusion
Pediatric ophthalmology plays a critical role in safeguarding the eye health and well-being of our children. Regular eye exams, early detection, and appropriate treatment are essential for ensuring that children can see clearly and develop optimally. As parents, it is our responsibility to prioritize their eye health and give them the best chance at a bright and visually unimpaired future. If you have any concerns about your child's vision, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with an eye specialist doctor in Delhi to address any potential issues promptly. Your child's clear and healthy vision is a gift that will last a lifetime.

Understanding Pediatric Ophthalmology and it’s Significance - IClinix
Pediatric Ophthalmology, in its essence, deals with children’s visual problems. There are several reasons why pediatric eye specialists have a differentiated practice. The primary reason is that children have different needs than adults and may often not be able to communicate the problem effectively. This requires a specialist that can understand the needs of the child and perform a thorough diagnosis to determine the cause of any problems. Secondly, several diseases manifest in different ways in children than they do in adults and are, as a result, tackled differently. Let us understand some of the common children’s visual problems, their early signs, and treatments. There is further increase in problems for children in metropolitan cities due to increase in pollution that can cause an array of problems. Therefore, if you live in Delhi it is advisable that you get your children tested by a pediatric ophthalmologist in Delhi.
Strabismus or Squint Eye
Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes may not be, and one or both eyes point up or down instead of straight. This condition can lead to a lazy eye if it is not treated on time and is one of the common children’s visual problems. This misalignment can happen if the muscles fail to work. The squint in the eye may not be visible at all times; it may change from day to day, and even in the hours of the day.  However, there may be cases in which a child does not have Strabismus but appear to have so because of the illusion created by eyes that are too close together or abroad and flat nose. To detect Strabismus, it is imperative for children to get regular check-ups to ensure that they are not at risk of developing the disease. Squint eye cannot be outgrown. It continues to affect the child until it is treated. The treatment is administered according to the progression of the problem and can be a combination of corrective glasses, medication, and surgery.
Amblyopia or Lazy Eye
Amblyopia or lazy eye is a condition that arises in case one eye gets weaker than the other. This happens when the one eye has a clearer vision than the other, causing the eye to become stronger and the other one to become weaker. It may also be a consequence of a squint eye that causes the suffering eye to have a low-quality vision. If lazy eye is not treated, then it may result in the weaker eye being rendered useless. The treatment of lazy eye is started with the treatment of underlying causes if any. The most popular treatment is patching the stronger eye to allow the weaker eye to work and gain back the vision. Other corrective measures are corrective glasses, surgery, and medication.
Refractive Errors
Refractive errors occur when the light does not focus properly on the retina. This may cause conditions like myopia and prevent the child from seeing clearly at a distance, or it may manifest into hyperopia or farsightedness. Refractive errors may affect the child’s day to day functioning, and it is imperative to take early-stage corrective measures for children’s vision problems. Corrective glasses or laser treatment can correct refractive errors.
Don’t ignore your child’s eye problems. Early detection and regular check-up can prevent unnecessary suffering and be the gateway to a healthy, problem-free life. If you are a resident of Delhi, you can visit an eye specialist in South Delhi or an eye clinic in South Delhi. To consult a pediatric ophthalmologist in Delhi and get treatment and check-ups, you can visit the trained and experienced eye consultants at IClinix.

Akron Children's Hospital needs the vision to add optical care (Part 1)
Akron Children's Hospital needs to add optical care to its Vision Center. Here's why.
Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital has it. Nationwide Children’s Hospital has it. Even Dayton Children’s Hospital has it. Akron Children’s Hospital, however, does not. What is lacking? An optical department in its Vision Center. During my pregnancy with my now 11-year-old daughter, Lyra, non-invasive testing revealed nothing unusual. With eyes scrunched shut, Lyra cried loudly at the moment…

This young boy had an esotropia (convergent eye misalignment) that resulted in a sudden loss of stereopsis and binocular function (both eyes working simultaneously). MRI scan of the brain excluded sinister causes of acute acquired comitant esotropia, and there was no accommodative component. He was closing one eye to avoid double vision.
The photos show the asymmetry in corneal light reflex (Hirschberg) and red reflex (Bruckner). Prisms are used to measure the size of the eye misalignment, based on when the reflexes become symmetric and the deviation is neutralised on cover testing. This helps us calculate the correct dose for eye muscle surgery, in this case weakening (recession) of the medial rectus muscle in both eyes.
Following routine eye muscle surgery, the eyes are re-aligned and the child’s binocular function is restored!
