You have undoubtedly started learning about gastroparesis and have more questions if your child has recently been diagnosed with it. Here are some further details on the condition:
7 ADDITIONAL FACTS ABOUT GASTROPARESIS IN CHILDREN
1. THE FUNCTIONS OF THE STOMACH
The heart, fundus, body, antrum, and pylorus are the five main components of the stomach. When all of these components are working properly, food can be accommodated, stored, compressed, digested, and pushed into the small
intestine. However, any combination of these five areas may be faulty and result in symptoms in a child with gastroparesis. Additionally, foods or liquids may be to blame for the symptoms.
We now lack a good test that can identify which one or more of the five components is malfunctioning, though we can perform a four-hour gastric emptying scan to see if the stomach empties slowly and can discriminate between liquid and solid emptying. We do, however, have drugs that target certain aspects of the stomach. Therefore, based on which medication helps reduce some of the symptoms, we can figure out which section is the issue after some trial and error. To treat the symptoms, we may occasionally need to take many drugs.
2.AN INCIDENCE
While not particularly prevalent in youngsters, gastroparesis is common in adults. It usually occurs after a viral infection in children. But frequently, the reason is unknown, which is referred to as idiopathic. It does occur when there is diabetes or a neurologic issue present, although it is less common in children. In addition, certain children may experience joint hypermobility, a disorder that can have an impact on various body systems, including the digestive system, and may result in gastroparesis.
3.In children of various ages, IT SEEMS DIFFERENT
Because children can't express their pain, gastroparesis manifests differently in infants and toddlers. They frequently have a feeding issue because they abruptly stop eating and become cranky and vomitous. The diagnosis is simpler in older children because they can express their feelings and report symptoms like bloating, nausea, and feeling full.
4.THE DIFFERENT GRADES OF SERIOUSNESS
Gastroparesis can range from minor to severe. Gastric failure is the term used to describe the severe variant. Children who have it stop eating and constantly throwing up, which causes them to lose weight and get dehydrated. In order to acquire nutrients, they frequently need to be fed through a feeding tube that skips the stomach. Sometimes they can't handle it either, therefore they may need to receive whole parenteral nourishment intravenously (TPN). Thankfully, this is a rare variation of the illness.
5.CONDITION OF LIFE
Many kids might get relief from their symptoms with the correct care. The process of receiving the proper diagnosis and subsequent therapy, however, can be drawn out and have an influence on a child's quality of life. These kids miss a lot of school and extracurricular activities as a result of their stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting symptoms. Most are taught at home. Furthermore, they may improve gradually over a period of several years. Some of them won't get better, and some of them will live with their symptoms for the rest of their lives. In most cases, post-viral gastroparesis gets better in three months to three years. After puberty, gastroparesis typically improves in patients with hypermobility.
6.The best treatment options
Every child will respond differently to treatment for gastroparesis, but alternatives may include prescription drugs, dietary changes, and medical and surgical treatments. A GI-focused psychologist can instruct children in certain methods to lessen the feelings of nausea and abdominal pain and to increase appetite. These methods for coping with pain and nausea can enhance everyday functioning, school attendance, nutrition, and weight growth. Multiple professionals are needed to meet the needs of children with severe forms. We advise patients to work with a team that consists of a neuro gastroenterologist, nutritionist, psychologist, and social services to assist children with their academics.
7.WHEN TO CONSULT A SPECIALIST
I advise having another discussion with your primary care physician if your child has experienced an acute sickness, such as the stomach flu, and if the symptoms, such as bloating, fullness, and pain, have not subsided. Your pediatrician could suggest referring your child to a pediatric gastroenterologist if they have been treating your child's symptoms with medication but they aren't improving.

Anyway, uh, if there’s typos I’m very sorry, and enjoy!

You followed her out and down the lined path, hands sitting in the pockets of your jacket to keep warm. She threaded her arm through yours, and led you down the street to a book shop of all places.
“I remembered you telling me about that new series you wanted to read, something about gay witches? And you’re always talking about how much you want to go to the bookstore but you never do. So, go browse. I want to see what your process looks like.”
“Th—that’s really thoughtful. I don’t know that I really have a true process, but yeah let’s go look!” You opened the door for her, a light going on inside you as you got your first waft of bookstore smell: the paper, the ink. You got the first wave of the noise: the low music playing in the background, the people there talking in hushed tones. You couldn’t make out any conversations happening, could barely hear that there were lyrics in the music. You stopped for a moment, scanning the layout of the room. Your eyes landed first on the display of bookmarks and postcards, making a mental note to get one or two of each to remember this little town so you could find it one day. But then your train of thought halted: could you come here alone?
Best not to dwell.
Your eyes resumed their scanning, noting the different sections. You wandered to the right, letting your gaze drift over the painting beside the door. It was line art of two bodies intertwined, splashed with color to resemble a galaxy where they met. The notecard below it gave the title and artist’s name. And a price. You were struck by how nice it would look on your art wall. But that was for another day.
You started your first pass through the stacks, letting your eyes skate over the spines of the books, pausing to read the note cards when they gave a recommendation from one of the workers. Your fingers started to take on a mind of their own, catching on books here and there, bringing them out for you to investigate. Every couple of them, you would open to the first page, let the author’s words try to entice you. You put most of them back, but a green paperback one with a bent cover stayed behind. You held it close as you continued on, pacing with no purpose at all. If someone didn’t know you, they would think you had a system, but really you were just letting yourself be on autopilot. That is, until you got to the section that housed the series you had read about and wanted.
“This is it!” You hoped your whisper would convey your excitement to Fennec. You had been watching book recommendation videos and this series had come up, promising both a love story and adventure. “I hope th—they do! They’ve got both!”
You plucked both the paperback and hardcover from the shelves, adding them to your little stash. Your small smile would not leave your face.
Fennec watched as you dragged yourself away from the section, mentally patting herself on the back for this idea. You looked so happy, at peace. If she was a part of that? She would consider herself both clever and immensely lucky. As she followed you back to one of the sections you had drifted through, she watched your perusing turn into a hunt. You furrowed your brow as you sank down to kneel and scan for what she wasn’t quite sure. She pulled two more books from the shelf.
“Have you read this one?” She held up a copy of a book called Circe.
“No, but someone at work was talking about it the other day.” She hoped you wouldn’t be disappointed, and wasn’t disappointed when you slid the book back into its place with a mischievous look. Fennec’s mind went straight into the gutter for a moment, imagining you in a very different situation but with the same look.
“Good, you’ll borrow my copy.” There was no arguing, it was a fact. She would.
You stood up again, still holding onto the other book. You were off again, and while she thought you clutching four books to your chest was possibly the cutest thing she had ever seen, you were going to drop one if you kept getting distracted. When you stopped again, she held her hands out.
“Here, let me carry them. You use your hands to browse.”
You nodded once and sank down again, grabbing one of the recommended titles and popping up again. You paused, before setting it on the pile Fennec was holding, warmth building in your face as she gave you one of her smiles.
You set off with one more stop in mind. The waiting room library at your office was lacking in chapter books as of late. You let your feet carry you to the children’s section.
“What are we doing here? I didn’t take you for the Warrior Cats type. “
“The selection of chapter books in my waiting room is looking a little sparse here lately. I want to see what the kids are into so I can update the wishlist.”
Fennec looked at you like you had suddenly turned purple with polka dots and sprouted antennae.
“I have a bookshelf in the waiting room, and I always make it clear to kids and parents that the books on it are meant to be read, cherished, read again, both while waiting and when they go home, with no expectation of return. The Little Golden Books usually do come back, just like most of the other books meant for the teeny-tinies. The chapter books get sparse and don’t tend to come back, but I like it that way. It means I’ve got another reader who gets to learn about the magic of words.”
“But where do the books come from?”
“Well, at first it was just me. There were some parents who made it very clear when I mentioned the shelf that they were perfectly capable of providing their kids with books and how dare I assume otherwise. There were others that you could tell were extremely grateful. There were also a few that had a problem with it but not for any good reason but I’m sure you know what kind of parents I’m getting at.”
She did.
“Then one day I was in the little shop in town and one of the little ones who had started on chapter books saw me and ran up, telling me all about how she had saved her allowance and she was able to get the sequel to the book she had gotten from me. The owner of the shop heard it, and when I went to buy the book I had picked out along with some chapter books for the waiting room, he told me he would let me start a wishlist and he would put it by the register for people to see and maybe buy one or two.”
“Do you usually get what you ask for?”
“It depends on the time of year. During the holidays people get more generous so it’s time to update the list. Hence the reading castle.” You gestured to the structure before you, an alcove that had a castle facade and was filled with still more books. “And the wall of chapter books.”
Before she could formulate a response, you had pulled out your phone and started making a list. Fennec watched you with an emotion she wasn’t sure how to name. The earnest way you took on your task had her pulling out her own phone while you weren’t watching to send a message to the garage group chat. When you had finished, you brushed a hand over her shoulder as you walked by.
You wandered to your last stop: the display at the front. You picked out a pack of bookmarks that were little magnetic trees before turning your attention to the display of postcards. You chose one that was a picture of the gazebo in the middle of town at night, surrounded by twinkle lights with “wish you were here” in small text at the bottom.
You walked up to the register and Fennec plopped your pile of finds on the counter.
“Did you find everything you were looking for?” The older salesperson behind the register had half a smirk on his face as he queried you. “I haven’t seen someone quite as methodical as you, even covered the section for children.”
You weren’t sure if the sarcastic tone was real or meant as a lighthearted joke, but either way you felt your cheeks warm again, and not in a good way. You wondered for a moment if the ground would open up and swallow you whole. You felt Fennec’s arm wrap its way around your torso again as the salesperson started ringing up the books.
“Being thorough is one of the best things about her. And this is just me, but I think it would be kind of nice if my kid’s pediatrician knew enough about what their media looked like to be able to talk to them at their level about things other than their health.”
“Oh so she’s a big kid is what you’re saying? What, does she play with dolls, or are toys more for the bedroom?” That definitely wasn’t meant in a kind way.
Fennec’s arm tightened around you before you got the chance to just slip away and out the door, as if she knew that was something you might do.
“I would stop talking about them if I were you.” Her voice was low, had taken on a dangerous edge that matched what others saw in her leather jacket.
He got the hint, hurrying up with the transaction. When the final total came up, you reached into your pocket, not really feeling anything for that moment or registering the number that flashed in your general direction. Before you could get your card liberated, Fennec was already sliding hers into the chip reader. You wanted to protest, wanted to tell her it was too much, but the interaction was a sea witch that had stolen your voice and you could only look on as the books and other small items were wrapped and put into a bag and Fennec was turning you in a circle to get you out of the shop.
You weren’t even aware that your feet had moved until you were in front of her bike and she had distributed the books into the two saddle bags. She faced you and put her hands on your shoulders.
“Are you okay?”
You looked at her, answering her question with the question mark that had seemingly etched itself on your face.
“Hello? Earth to Doc? Are you in there?” She gave your shoulders a little shake, before she wrapped you in her arms. You finally felt like you could take a deep breath again as you rested your head in the crook of her neck, letting the pressure she was providing ground you again.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered into the collar of her sweater.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. He should be sorry. If he hadn’t stopped talking, I would have made him sorry.”
“I wanted to stop you from paying, it was too much.”
“No. I wanted to do that, it was the plan from the beginning.”
“Really?” You pulled back slightly, peeking at her, searching her face but not having much luck in the low light.
“Yes really. Now, I had something else planned, do you want to know what it is so you can decide if you still want to do it?”
You considered it, but the phantom hollow in your chest and the way your arms and legs still didn’t feel like they belonged to you gave you your answer.
“I want to know, but not yet. Keep it secret, show me next time. I’ve got my own idea though. Will you take me home? I want to show you the Books.”
***
You didn’t want to let go of her, but you needed to if you were going to go inside where it was warm. So you did. When she had taken the books out and put them back in their bag, you headed for the three steps that led up to the door of your half of the duplex. You unlocked the door, nearly dropping the keys because your hands were so cold. You caught them before Fennec could tease you about it.
You clicked on the light in the entryway, lighting the way as she took a few steps inside again. You took the bag from her, and nodded to your left. Behind the stairs to the loft, there was a doorway. You walked through it and to the right, knowing the room in the darkness. You stepped on the clicker for the floor lamp, bathing the room in a soft glow. You walked over to the electric fireplace that added some extra heat to the room, switching it on.
You went back to where she was standing in the doorway, like she wasn’t quite sure what to do with her hands. You took them in yours and brought her in.
Her eyes widened as she took in the space.
The room screamed comfort. All four walls were covered by bookshelves that reached the ceiling, with two interruptions. The first was around the fireplace, if you could even call it that. There was a painting in front of it, but her eyes were too busy wandering to take it in just yet. Her gaze drifted to the window, where either you or the previous owners had built a seat large and plush enough to recline in. While that should have been the star of the room, it wasn’t.
In front of the fireplace was a massive sectional sofa. She was sure it had to have a pull out option you were taking advantage of because it looked more like a bed-sofa hybrid with the way the middle was seemingly filled to the brim with throw pillows and faux-fur blankets.
You stood watching her take it in, as she eventually started looking at the books lining the shelves, punctuated by the odd piece of memorabilia. There was such a variety, all alphabetized, with the only delineation by genre she could see being poetry and prose. As she browsed, you placed your books on the window seat, and from under it produced two stamps: one to mark the books as yours, and one to put a place for people who borrowed them to sign. Others always asked if it was to make sure they came back, but you always replied with no, it was to make sure people could see if they had borrowed them before. You put the books onto the rolling cart that already had a small pile to be put away. Some of them were new, some you had reread and needed to return.
Task complete, you perched on the back of the couch to watch her.
“I should start referring to you as a dragon. You’ve got quite the hoard, baby.” Her words were quiet, wrapped with kindness. “It’s impressive. Thank you for showing me this part of you.”
“I just really like them.” Your smile was growing as she got closer to you. You stood and wrapped yourself around her again. “Does that make you the maiden in need of rescue?”
“Oh, no, you can keep me here as long as you want. Besides, don’t you know the dragon needs saving too sometimes?”
“In that case…” You paused, stealing yourself. “Would you stay a while? I can make tea, we can read, if you’re okay with you could do that pressure thing again?”
“You mean will I hold you close, let you hide your face in my neck for a minute again? Let you whisper things you don’t think I’ll hear but I will anyway?”
You nodded once.
“In that case, I’ll do ‘that pressure thing’ for as long as you need me to. But you have to let me try out this couch nest thing because it looks amazing.”
“Of course, but the first rule of the dragon’s lair is this: no jackets.”

Newsom says COVID-19 data is correct after administration shakeup
Responding to one of California’s biggest setbacks since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday said his administration has fixed a public health computer database failure that distorted test results across the state and raised doubts about actions taken to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Newsom faced reporters for the first time since he touted the inaccurate data as a positive sign of fewer infections a day before the glitches became public. The governor said he was unaware of the problem, even though state health officials warned counties about data issues days earlier.
On Sunday, the state announced the abrupt departure of Dr. Sonia Angell, the director of the California Department of Public Health, the agency in charge of collecting the electronic test results.
“These things are unfortunate, but we are moving forward,” Newsom told reporters during a news briefing Monday in Sacramento. “I’m governor. The buck stops with me.”
Newsom declined to say whether he asked Angell to resign and sidestepped a question about her leadership of the agency during the pandemic. He said he felt it was appropriate to accept her resignation.
“She resigned. She wrote a resignation letter, and I accepted her resignation,” Newsom said. “We’re all accountable in our respective roles for what happens underneath us.”
Newsom blamed the issues with the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange, or CalREDIE, on the state’s archaic technology systems and cited similar processing delays and problems at the Department of Motor Vehicles and the state Employment Development Department, which has faced sharp criticism for failing to process unemployment insurance applications filed by millions of out-of-work Californians. The governor said replacing those systems is one of this administration’s top priorities.
Rob Stutzman, a Republican consultant and former communications director to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said Newsom’s explanation Monday on the data failure and Angell’s departure fell far short of the public accountability Californians deserve.
“It took him a week to stand in front of Californians and address this issue,” Stutzman said. “…He owes a better explanation of the Sunday night massacre that led to her departure.”
Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s health and human services director, said between 250,000 and 300,000 test results had not been uploaded to the database, and that the malfunction began on July 25. Ghaly said all of those problems have been fixed, all backlogged data have been processed, and that the information had been shared with county health officials across the state.
To ensure that the state doesn’t experience similar breakdowns, computing capacity was increased fourfold at CalREDIE, the electronic disease reporting and surveillance system overseen by the California Department of Public Health, Ghaly said.
Still, the Newsom administration’s decisions on which counties would be allowed to resume activities and reopen schools and businesses, including restaurants, was based in part on positive coronavirus test data.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti last week expressed frustration over the state’s unreliable test results and said the problem may have been much more extensive than revealed by the Newsom administration.
“We don’t believe that it’s something that just happened in the last two or three weeks. The state has told us that these reporting problems may have been throughout [the pandemic],” Garcetti told reporters Wednesday. “So it would be, I think, wrong to conclude that somehow numbers have come down because the reporting system just in the last two weeks has changed. This is something that they’ve uncovered that probably has been with us since months ago.”
On Friday, Ghaly said that a server outage caused a delay in health records flowing into CalREDIE and that mistakes by the administration exacerbated the problem.
“The governor has directed a full investigation of what happened and we will hold people accountable,” Ghaly said last week.
After the July 25 server outage caused a delay in processing data, the state implemented “technical changes that allowed the records to flow into the system more quickly,” Ghaly said. The changes needed to be disabled later, but weren’t, which caused “further delays in our reporting of lab data and creating an extensive backlog,” he said.
Officials also discovered that Quest Diagnostics, one of the biggest labs in the state, was unable to report lab data to the system for five days from July 31 through Aug. 4, further skewing the data. Ghaly said the state failed to renew a certificate that allowed Quest to transmit information into the system.
The California Department of Public Health told counties of a data problem in a July 31 email and referenced an earlier notice about the issue. Newsom said he was not aware of the data inaccuracies when he described a steep drop in positive test results as a good sign three days later.
County officials had also raised questions about the data for months. Ghaly said on Friday that he’s working to understand communication issues at California Health and Human Services and the California Department of Public Health.
Without an accurate picture of confirmed cases, many local officials who rely on the CalREDIE system had to conduct their own tallies to understand how the virus spread in their communities. Several counties throughout the state are applying for waivers to reopen schools. That allowance, like state permission for counties to reopen certain businesses, relies heavily on data tied to case counts and hospitalizations.
After officials discovered the data backlog, the state stopped adding and removing counties from its watchlist of areas experiencing higher rates of transmission, which subjects them to more restrictions than parts of California with lower caseloads. Thirty-eight counties, representing 97% of the state’s population, are on the list.
Newsom said he is confident that the updated statewide data on the rate of positive coronavirus tests will “look favorable,” and cited other public health indicators showing a decline in COVID-19-related hospitalizations.
More than 10,000 Californians have died from COVID-19, and 560,000 have been diagnosed with the virus. The pandemic has put millions of Californians out of work, decimated the economy and is forcing most California schools to shut down classrooms and begin the academic year using distance learning programs. The Los Angeles Dodgers and other professional sports teams are playing games in stadiums and arenas without fans and, to lessen the risks of the virus spreading on election day, all registered California voters will receive a mail-in ballot.
Angell, the state’s departing director of public health, appeared alongside Newsom in his public briefings on the state’s efforts to combat the pandemic. She was considered a key player in the state’s coordination with local public health departments across California and, as the state’s top public health officer, was responsible for issuing the statewide mask mandate.
Appointed department director and state public health officer by Newsom in October, she was the first Latina to serve in the role. Angell announced her departure, effective immediately, in an email to staff on Sunday night. She did not give a reason for her resignation in the letter. Her salary in the position was $275,650, more than Newsom makes as governor.
Before taking the job in California, Angell was deputy commissioner at the New York City Department of Public Health and Mental Hygiene and previously worked as a senior advisor for the global noncommunicable disease unit at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Her job responsibilities will be split between two women, state officials said: Sandra Shewry will take over as acting director of the Department of Public Health, and Dr. Erica Pan will shift to become the acting state public health officer after having joined the state’s public health department in June as the state’s epidemiologist.
Shewry, who is vice president at the nonprofit California Health Care Foundation, previously oversaw the state’s Medi-Cal program under Schwarzenegger. Pan, who previously was Alameda County Public Health’s Officer, notably clashed with Tesla’s Elon Musk in May over the electric car factory’s decision to restart production despite shelter-at-home orders at the time.
Sen. Richard Pan (D-Sacramento), who is not related to Dr. Erica Pan, said he understands the need to temporarily split Angell’s job into two positions, but that the roles should not be separated for long.
“You need to have one voice, a person who is speaking as the state’s public health officer who oversees the state’s public health department,” said Pan, a pediatrician. “Otherwise, it reduces the authority of the state’s public health officer.”
He said turnover in the top ranks of the state’s public health department is significant.
“It’s a loss to suddenly have the director and state’s public health officer leave during a pandemic,” Pan said. “It’s critical for the governor and administration to ensure there is confidence in the public health leadership … The data issue has undermined confidence and you suddenly have the director leaving, which raises questions as to why. The administration needs to explain the issue that led to this.”
Times staff writers John Myers and Dakota Smith contributed to this report.

To have a discussion over dinner
Silicon Valley Came to Kansas Schools. That Started a Rebellion by Nellie Bowles for The New York Times
WELLINGTON, Kan. — The seed of rebellion was planted in classrooms. It grew in kitchens and living rooms, in conversations between students and their parents.
It culminated when Collin Winter, 14, an eighth grader in McPherson, Kan., joined a classroom walkout in January. In the nearby town of Wellington, high schoolers staged a sit-in. Their parents organized in living rooms, at churches and in the back of machine repair shops. They showed up en masse to school board meetings. In neighborhoods with no political yard signs, homemade signs with dark red slash marks suddenly popped up.
Silicon Valley had come to small-town Kansas schools — and it was not going well.
“I want to just take my Chromebook back and tell them I’m not doing it anymore,” said Kallee Forslund, 16, a 10th grader in Wellington.
Eight months earlier, public schools near Wichita had rolled out a web-based platform and curriculum from Summit Learning. The Silicon Valley-based program promotes an educational approach called “personalized learning,” which uses online tools to customize education. The platform that Summit provides was developed by Facebook engineers. It is funded by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, and his wife, Priscilla Chan, a pediatrician.
Many families in the Kansas towns, which have grappled with underfunded public schools and deteriorating test scores, initially embraced the change. Under Summit’s program, students spend much of the day on their laptops and go online for lesson plans and quizzes, which they complete at their own pace. Teachers assist students with the work, hold mentoring sessions and lead special projects. The system is free to schools. The laptops are typically bought separately.
Then, students started coming home with headaches and hand cramps. Some said they felt more anxious. One child began having a recurrence of seizures. Another asked to bring her dad’s hunting earmuffs to class to block out classmates because work was now done largely alone.
“We’re allowing the computers to teach and the kids all looked like zombies,” said Tyson Koenig, a factory supervisor in McPherson, who visited his son’s fourth-grade class. In October, he pulled the 10-year-old out of the school.
Tom Henning, a Wellington resident, pulled his son Toby out of the public high school because of concerns about the Summit Learning program.
In a school district survey of McPherson middle school parents released this month, 77 percent of respondents said they preferred their child not be in a classroom that uses Summit. More than 80 percent said their children had expressed concerns about the platform.
“Change rarely comes without some bumps in the road,” said Gordon Mohn, McPherson’s superintendent of schools. He added, “Students are becoming self-directed learners and are demonstrating greater ownership of their learning activities.”
John Buckendorf, Wellington High School’s principal, said the “vast majority of our parents are happy with the program.”
The resistance in Kansas is part of mounting nationwide opposition to Summit, which began trials of its system in public schools four years ago and is now in around 380 schools and used by 74,000 students. In Brooklyn, high school students walked out in November after their school started using Summit’s platform. In Indiana, Pa., after a survey by Indiana University of Pennsylvania found 70 percent of students wanted Summit dropped or made optional, the school board scaled it back and then voted this month to terminate it. And in Cheshire, Conn., the program was cut after protests in 2017.
“When there are frustrating situations, generally kids get over them, parents get over them, and they all move on,” said Mary Burnham, who has two grandchildren in Cheshire’s school district and started a petition to end Summit’s use. “Nobody got over this.”
Silicon Valley has tried to remake American education in its own image for years, even as many in tech eschew gadgets and software at home and flood into tech-free schools. Summit has been part of the leading edge of the movement, but the rebellion raises questions about a heavy reliance on tech in public schools.
For years, education experts have debated the merits of self-directed, online learning versus traditional teacher-led classrooms. Proponents argue that programs like Summit provide children, especially those in underserved towns, access to high-quality curriculums and teachers. Skeptics worry about screen time and argue that students miss out on important interpersonal lessons.
In neighborhoods with no political yard signs, homemade signs about Summit Learning suddenly popped up.
John Pane, a senior scientist at the RAND Corporation who has studied programs that use digital tools to customize learning, said the field remains in its infancy. “There has not been enough research,” he said.
Diane Tavenner, a former teacher and Summit’s chief executive, founded a series of public charter schools starting in 2003 called Summit Public Schools and began developing software to use in the classrooms so that students could “unlock the power within themselves.” The resulting program, Summit Learning, is spinning out into a new nonprofit called T.L.P. Education. Ms. Tavenner said the Kansas protests were largely about nostalgia.
“There’s people who don’t want change. They like the schools the way they are,” she said. “The same people who don’t like Summit have been the sort of vocal opposition to change throughout the process.”
Summit chose not to be part of a study after paying the Harvard Center for Education Policy Research to design one in 2016. Tom Kane, the Harvard professor preparing that assessment, said he was wary of speaking out against Summit because many education projects receive funding from Mr. Zuckerberg and Dr. Chan’s philanthropic organization, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
Mr. Zuckerberg backed Summit in 2014 and assigned five Facebook engineers to develop the software. In 2015, he wrote that Summit’s program would help “meet the student’s individual needs and interests” and that technology “frees up time for teachers to do what they do best — mentor students.” Since 2016, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has committed $99.1 million in grants to Summit.
In a statement, Abby Lunardini, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s chief communications officer, said, “We take the issues raised very seriously, and Summit has been working with school leaders and parents on the ground to address them.” She added that many schools that used Summit “love and support the program.”
Few places better illustrate the reaction to Summit than the central Kansas towns of Wellington (population 8,000) and McPherson (population 13,000). The towns are surrounded by wheat fields and factories. Residents work in farming, at a nearby oil refinery or at aircraft parts manufacturing plants.
Amy Jackson with her daughters, from left, Megan and Jordyn, and their friend Kallee Forslund, right. Megan, who has epilepsy, has had multiple seizures a day since her school started using Summit’s program.
In 2015, Kansas announced that it would support education “moon shots” like “personalized learning.” Two years later, it picked school district “astronauts,” including McPherson and Wellington. When parents received brochures promising “personalized learning,” many were thrilled. The school districts’ leaders selected Summit.
“We wanted to get every kid on an even playing field,” said Brian Kynaston, a dentist in McPherson and school board member, adding that it helped that Summit was free.
He said he liked Summit’s program. His daughter, Kelcie, 14, said she felt self-directed. “Everyone is judging it too quickly,” he said.
Mr. Koenig, the factory supervisor, said: “You want your kids to be innovators. You want them to be on the cutting edge of what’s next.”
[If you are a parent, teacher or administrator who has experience with the Summit learning platform and want to discuss it, reach us confidentially here.]
When this school year started, children got laptops to use Summit software and curriculums. In class, they sat at the computers working through subjects from math to English to history. Teachers told students that their role was now to be a mentor.
Parents of special-needs students noticed problems immediately. Amy Jackson, a night-shift nurse in Wellington, has a daughter, Megan, 12, who has epilepsy and whose neurologist recommended she limit screen time to 30 minutes a day to reduce seizures. Since the school started using Summit, Megan has had seizures multiple times a day.
In Wellington’s town square, residents wrote their opposition to Summit on storefront windows.
In September, some students stumbled onto questionable content while working in the Summit platform, which often directs them to click on links to the open web.
In one class covering Paleolithic history, Summit included a link to an article in The Daily Mail, the British newspaper, that showed racy ads with bikini-clad women. For a list of the Ten Commandments, two parents said their children were directed to a Christian conversion site.
Ms. Tavenner said building a curriculum from the open internet meant that a Daily Mail article was fair game for lesson plans. “The Daily Mail is written at a very low reading level,” she said, later adding that it was a bad link to include. She added that as far as she was aware, Summit’s curriculum did not send students to a Christian conversion site.
Around the country, teachers said they were split on Summit. Some said it freed them from making lesson plans and grading quizzes so they had more time for individual students. Others said it left them as bystanders. Some parents said they worried about their children’s data privacy.
“Summit demands an extraordinary amount of personal information about each student and plans to track them through college and beyond,” said Leonie Haimson, co-chairwoman of the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy, a national organization.
Summit says it complies with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
By winter, many McPherson and Wellington students were fed up. While Summit’s program asks schools to commit to having students meet weekly in person with teachers for at least 10 minutes, some children said the sessions lasted around two minutes or did not happen.
Myriland French, 16, a student at Wellington’s high school, said she had developed eye strain and missed talking to teachers and students in class. “Everyone is more stressed now,” she said.
“Everyone is more stressed now,” said Myriland French, 16. She developed eye strain while using Summit’s program, she said, and misses talking to teachers and students in class.
Collin Winter, the eighth grader in McPherson, said he had joined the January class walkout with about 50 other students. “I was scared a little bit,” he said of participating. “But I still felt good to be doing something.”
One recent evening in Wellington, a dozen parents and students held an organizing meeting in the back of a machine workshop owned by Tom Henning, a local parent. Chris Smalley, a machinist with two children, ages 13 and 16, attended. Mr. Smalley had put up bigger and bigger yard signs in front of his house, even though he knew Mr. Zuckerberg was unlikely to drive by and see them. They were red, with a slash across the word “Summit.”
“It sounded great, what they sold us,” Mr. Smalley said. “It was the worst lemon car that we’ve ever bought.”
Deanna Garver, a church secretary whose sons are in second and eighth grades, had also made a yard sign. It read: “Don’t Plummet With Summit.”
After the fall semester last year, about a dozen parents in Wellington pulled their children out of public school, said Kevin Dodds, a city councilman. In McPherson, Mr. Koenig and his wife, Meggan, enrolled their two children in a Catholic school, using money saved for a kitchen remodel and vacation.
“We’re not Catholic,” Mrs. Koenig said. “But we just felt like it would be a lot easier to have a discussion over dinner about something that they might have heard in a religion class than Summit.”
Nearly 40 more families plan on taking their children out of public school by this summer, Mr. Dodds said.
“We’re out in the middle of nowhere,” he said. “So we’re the guinea pigs.”

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Defense Company on Tuesday positioned the head of its Business office of Children’s Well being Defense on administrative depart, in an unconventional transfer that many observers reported appeared to replicate an exertion to limit the position of the business office.
Dr. Ruth Etzel, a pediatrician and epidemiologist who has been a chief in children’s environmental health and fitness for 30 years, joined the E.P.A. in 2015, soon after obtaining served as a senior officer for environmental wellbeing exploration at the Earth Well being Firm. She was placed on administrative go away late Tuesday and requested to hand above her badge, keys and cellphone, in accordance to an E.P.A. official common with the conclusion who was not approved to discuss the transfer and asked not to be identified.
An E.P.A. spokesman, John Konkus, verified that Dr. Etzel experienced been put on administrative go away and declined to give the explanation.
The E.P.A.’s Office environment of Children’s Wellness Protection, developed by President Invoice Clinton in 1997, is tasked with seeing that company polices and courses acquire into account the distinct vulnerabilities of kids, infants and fetuses. Little ones are more susceptible than adults to air pollution and other probable publicity since their bodies are nevertheless developing and mainly because they try to eat, drink and breathe far more in proportion to their measurement. In addition, some of their behaviors, such as crawling or putting things in their mouths, most likely expose them to substances or harmful toxins.
A number of individuals inside of the E.P.A. or who function closely with the agency reported that Dr. Etzel’s dismissal is just one of various current developments that have slowed the perform of the children’s wellbeing office. One particular individual cited a proposal outlining a tactic for minimizing childhood direct exposure, which experienced been in advancement for about a 12 months with the involvement of 17 federal agencies, and which has been stalled because early July.
The Office environment of Children’s Overall health Safety is technically housed in the business office of the E.P.A. administrator, Andrew Wheeler, who has served as the agency’s acting administrator considering that July.
Underneath Mr. Wheeler and his predecessor, Scott Pruitt, who still left the posture before this 12 months amid investigations into his oversight of the agency, the E.P.A. has aggressively pursued an agenda of rolling again environmental limitations on numerous pollutants, arguing that the laws are extremely rigorous or that they burden business.
“This appears to be like a sneaky way for the E.P.A. to get rid of this application and not be upfront about it,” claimed Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, the director of the pediatric residency software at Hurley Medical Middle, a teaching healthcare facility affiliated with Michigan State University, whose analysis of blood checks in Flint, Mich. — a local community that grew to become caught up in a lead crisis affecting its drinking drinking water — played a vital role in displaying that people have been getting poisoned by the lead. Dr. Hanna-Atisha called Dr. Etzel “an international leader in children’s wellness.”
The decision to put the department head on administrative depart “is extremely abnormal,” explained Joseph Goffman, a former senior counsel for the E.P.A. for the duration of the Obama administration.
The office environment Dr. Etzel oversees is little, with a price range of about $2 million and 15 total-time staff members in Washington and 10 regional children’s wellbeing coordinators, some of whom have other duties in addition to children’s health and fitness.
Mr. Konkus, the E.P.A. spokesman, claimed the Trump administration experienced no intention to diminish or reduce an office environment designed to safeguard children’s overall health. “Children’s overall health is and has generally been a prime precedence for the Trump administration and the E.P.A. in individual is concentrated on reducing guide exposure in colleges, delivering cash for a cleaner faculty bus fleet and cleaning up harmful web sites so that small children have safe environments to study and perform,” he claimed in an emailed assertion.

Car insurance rates sports vs regular?
ok i've never owned a car before, im 19 and i've been insured on my parents 3 cars since i was 16, 1 being a 2005 mazda rx8. perfect driving record, no tickets, no fenders. they're going to buy me a car now, and i'm trying to get them to just give me the mazda because they want to sell it any way. They say the insurance rates would be too high. So they want me to get a shitty honda or something (which would be like the same price they would be selling this beautiful mazda for because it has 40k miles on it) So what would be the difference per month i would be paying in insurance if i were to take the mazda (which i guess is defined as a sports car) vs if i were to buy a shitty car that isn't a sports car""

I plead a DUI down to a wet and reckless for a reduced charge. This was over a year ago, and my insurance premium hasn't changed a bit. How can I get access to affordable US Health care as an American who lives in France?
It has been almost 2 years and I really feel like there is something not right with my health but the doctors in France aren't listening. I have swollen lymph nodes for over a year now. Some disappear, then reappear in different locations. And I am very fatigued and have itching behind my knees at night that wakes me up. Yet there is not a rash nor insect bite. It seems like the doctors in France rely strictly on complete blood counts for everything and if your blood tests are normal, then there is nothing wrong with you. I wonder if it would be the same in the US system, considering France was the winner of the WHO's Best Medical System in the World award. Will applying for medicaid affect the insurance I have now in any way?
I am 32 weeks pregnant and I am covered under my dad's insurance through Tricare. I remain eligible under his insurance until I am 23 and everything is full coverage. However, as soon as my baby is born he is not covered at all. I am looking into my options and I read that if I apply for medicaid now, then I can call the day my baby is born and just have him added on so that way he will have coverage right away. I am worried if I do try and apply for medicaid now that it will affect the insurance I am covered under now by Tricare. I do want to stay under tricare, I do not want to lose this insurance and its coverage if that is the case. I am also worried that since I have to wait until the baby is born to apply him for his own insurance through CHIP or Medicaid - whichever one he ends up qualifying - that I will have to wait a long time before he is actually covered and I know the baby is going to need check ups and a pediatrician right away. I am really worried about all this and wondering what is my best option and what I should do! Will I lose my insurance if I apply for Medicaid in advanced so my baby will be covered right away? Is my best option waiting until the day he is born and then applying? I also live in PA if that makes any difference. Anybody who can help out, thanks!""

Should I get liability or full coverage on my car?
I have a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE with 157,000 on it. I did the KBB value and got $3400 for private party and $2200 for trade in but I'm not sure how accurate that is or how much I'd get from insurance in the case of a collision. I paid $4200 for it in 2009 when it was marked at $6200. Of course, I don't owe anything on it. I've been on my mom's car insurance (I'm 21) up until now but I recently moved out and need to get my own policy. Unfortunately, I don't have the greatest driving record; I had a rough first year of driving in 2007/2008 and I'm still paying for it. I've been paying $180/month for full coverage with Allstate. I got quotes from other companies and I found one (AIA, a local insurance company) that offered me liability insurance for $100 down and $100 a month for 10 months. The next lowest I found was $145/month with Progressive. With AIA, I can get full coverage for $222 down and $190 a month. I haven't had an accident since 2008, and I'm confident about my driving skills, but I don't want to screw myself over. I don't have $3400, or even $2200, to buy a new car if something happened to this one. However, my car is 9 years old, so I don't know if it's even worth it. What should I do?""

There is no possible way, in timeline, for us to qualify for such rules. 16-18 years old (in high school and lived with parents), 18-23 years old (Attended separate universities and lived in different cities), 23- 24 1/2 years old, (both living with parents back home, we alternate and stay at each others place, so have no set home or bills in our name, such as direct tv, electricity, internet, you name it. we are blessed with awesome parents) and yes we have though about just getting married, but no way... we are waiting until we are established and can fend for ourselves to make a decision like that, but yes we do want to get married some day, but not over screwing the government or other reasons. Also we live in california if that helps, since i know every state varies, thank s guys!! ^_^""

Weather Related Car Accident How Much Will Insurance Pay For?
Ok so I was driving home late morning a few nights ago, it was snowing pretty badly making conditions pretty bad, difficult to drive in and especially with my car (eclipse) so I was not doing any more then I could handle. I was on the highway going around 15-25 mph at most. Suddenly I began to swerve and spun out and got turned around and finally hit the guardrail, not much force because I was driving pretty slow to begin with. So the side of my car hit and I ended up facing the other direction. I have noticed there are a few scratches and marks on the front side one on headlight, a little below the headlight and some orange marks along the side, also a crack on the very bottom of the back bumper (not sure how it got there, kinda in the middle) So I was the only one involved and was wondering since it is a weather related accident how much my insurance will pay for? im just very confused because I am not looking forward to body shop and getting estimates, Greatly Appreciated Thanks""

NUK to drop false "clinically proven" claim plus Managing Director responds to monitoring report
Baby Milk Action has published a profile of NUK bottles and teats in its Look What They’re Doing in the UK 2017 monitoring report. This has led to misleading claims being exposed and a requirement they are not used in future advertising.
As part of the monitoring project, we report suitable cases to the authorities responsible for enforcing the UK law and to the advertising industry’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
Company to remove false claims from future advertising and packaging
One issue is Mapa Spontex, the manufacturer of the NUK brand, markets its First Choice teat with the claim it is “Clinically Proven” for “Combined Feeding”, and encourages breastfeeding mothers to introduce feeding bottles from as early as one week of age. Advertising referenced a study suggesting this proves the teat enables “optimal combination of breast and bottle feeding”.
Baby Milk Action investigated and found the study found no such thing. The First Choice teat was the only one involved in the study, so there is no basis to claim it is “optimal” or the “First Choice”.
The title of the study is, “Mechanics of sucking: comparison between bottle feeding and breastfeeding” (although this was not given alongside the reference in the NUK advertising). The study found babies suck differently on the NUK teat and at the breast. There was no investigation of the impact of this on lactation.
The ASA responded to two of our complaints on 29 March 2017 as follows:
We have now resolved the case with the advertiser. They have agreed to remove the study from their advert and will no longer use the phrase “Clinically proven.” We have decided that this is sufficient to resolve the matter informally and we have now closed the case. As I mentioned before, the name of the advertiser will appear on our website in a list of advertisers who have worked with us to amend their advertising. Mapa Spontex will appear on the list on 5 April 2017.
The entry was delayed due to 12 April due to a technical fault. The full extent of the ASA’s notification that the NUK claims are misleading and cannot be repeated is the following.
This is a great concern as the false “Clinically Proven” for “Combined Feeding” claim also appears on packaging for the NUK teat, which is outside the remit of the ASA. We have tried to persuade the ASA that it is in the public interest to publish its findings, but it refused to do so. The ASA has also refused to share the agreement it made with Mapa Spontex not to publish a ruling if it promised to drop the false claims.
We sent Trading Standards our report and it informed us on 28 April 2017 that it had discussed this with Mapa Spontex will remove the “Clinically Proven” statements from its product packaging. Trading Standards will not be taking any further action.
The ASA refused to investigate the claim implicit in the “First Choice” name, saying this was permitted “marketing puffery”.
Baby Milk Action recommends that mothers who wish to introduce feeding bottles look to independent information from NHS Choices and mother support groups as these provide facts on the possible impact on breastfeeding of introducing bottles and how best to do so. See NHS Choices: http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/combining-breast-and-bottle.aspx
Please donate if you would like Baby Milk Action to continue monitoring the baby food industry and holding corporations to account for breaking marketing rules.
Response from Mapa Spontex
Baby Milk Action sent the NUK company profile to Mapa Spontex on 23 March 2017. We received a response on 7 April and we are posting it in full below today on 8 April as the company’s right to reply.
The company makes no reference to its agreement with the ASA to drop the false claims from its advertising and we responded immediately suggesting that it may wish to do so.
The letter also criticises Baby Milk Action for bias, failing to acknowledge our role it to protect breastfeeding and to protect babies fed on formula.
If a mother decides to use feeding bottles and teats, we believe she has a right to accurate information and should not be subjected to false advertising claims.
The response from Mapa Spontex is given below in its entirety.

Re: Baby Milk’s article on NUK products
Dear Mr. Brady,
Thank you for your mail of March 24 and the opportunity to comment on Baby Milk’s website on the NUK brand.
Whilst we appreciate that the aim of your organization is to protect breastfeeding with all means, we do feel that your interpretation of NUK’s activities and brand communication do not do us or the many women that rely on our products every day justice. What’s more, we are convinced that this one-sided approach does not further the legitimate cause of promoting breast feeding.
The reality we see is that a mother’s intention to breastfeed her child may be challenged for different reasons every day. NUK products are not directed against a mother’s choice to breastfeed, but are designed with the realities and obstacles to breastfeeding in mind, thus allowing parents to combine breast feeding and bottle feeding by use of products suitable for combined feeding, when necessary. The NUK brand has a strong and consistent history of investing in research to provide mothers with an appropriate product helping them to relieve their breastfeeding problems and simplifying their everyday routine.
At no point we have suggested that NUK products should replace breastfeeding, medical breastfeeding aids or any other breastfeeding aids. On the contrary, the NUK website expressly indicates that breastfeeding is the best for babies and outlines the benefits of breastfeeding. In addition, we explain how the breastfeeding process works, as NUK strongly believes that mothers should be fully informed before making their decision as to how they want to feed their babies. That’s why we even warn mothers of the possible negative effects on breast feeding of introducing bottle feeding and the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed. In addition, our website encourages mothers who encounter difficulties to seek the assistance of medical aid, such as midwives and pediatricians.
In addition, the claims below that you question are in fact fully substantiated and compliant with UK law:
-We do have the British dental health foundation approval to use their logo -The claim “widely used in hospitals” is supported by statistics on a UK level -the use of the name “First Choice” is perfectly permissible under UK law
You further indicate that our claim that the NUK teats mimic the shape of the mother’s nipple during breastfeeding breast is contradicted by our statement that breastfed babies may be reluctant to bottles. It is perfectly logical that babies who are entirely breastfed may need a transition to adapt to an alternative way of feeding, no matter how close it is to the shape of the mother’s nipple. This is fully in line with our above-mentioned statement that bottle feeding is not a breastfeeding substitute, but a complementary way to feed Babies.
To the extent that you interpret the claim “reduces the risk of colics” to undermine breastfeeding, you will not be surprised we do not agree. The claim “reduces the risk of colics” clearly refers to the fact that NUK bottles have a specific system preventing an air vacuum and thus the swallowing of the air while bottle feeding. This system enables a relaxed drinking and creates a regular flow, reducing the potential risk of colics as it is recognized swallowing air whilst eating can be a cause for colics which may occur with bottles that do not have a similar system. Therefore, we disagree with your view that our claim undermines breastfeeding.
Although we are aware of Milk Action’s open bias to breastfeeding, and that you will therefore consider any advertisement relating to bottle feeding to be “undermining breastfeeding”, we do expect you to communicate to consumers in a professional and non-misleading way. Your article on NUK may influence parents in a misleading and unfair way and does not meet the standards you are so adamantly demanding NUK to adhere to.
Accordingly, reserving all rights, we kindly ask you to correct the article in order to give a fair and balanced view on our products, company and brand.
We are looking forward to discussing this in more detail with you.
Yours sincerely,
Marc Matthews
Managing Director : Mapa Spontex UK Ltd
Baby Milk Action response
Baby Milk Action has asked Mapa Spontex to provide further information on where it warns mothers of the possible negative effects on breast feeding of introducing bottle feeding and the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed as this was not found on its website, advertising or packaging, certainly not in the same location as the false claim that the First Choice teat is “clinically proven” for “optimal combination of breast and bottle feeding” nor alongside advise to introduce feeding bottles by 6 weeks of age at the latest.
Pending that information, we see no need to change our profile on NUK, other than to acknowledge that Mapa Spontex has responded, that the ASA has agreed with our analysis of the misleading claims and that the company, according to the ASA at least, has agreed not to repeat them in advertising.

The buck stops with me.” Newsom declined to say whether he asked Angell to resign and sidestepped a question about her leadership of the agency during the pandemic. He said he felt it was appropriate to accept her resignation. “She resigned. She wrote a resignation letter, and I accepted her resignation,” Newsom said. “We’re all accountable in our respective roles for what happens underneath us.” Newsom blamed the issues with the California Reportable Disease Information Exchange, or CalREDIE, on the state’s archaic technology systems and cited similar processing delays and problems at the Department of Motor Vehicles and the state Employment Development Department, which has faced sharp criticism for failing to process unemployment insurance applications filed by millions of out-of-work Californians. “…He owes a better explanation of the Sunday night massacre that led to her departure.” Dr. This is something that they’ve uncovered that probably has been with us since months ago.” On Friday, Ghaly said that a server outage caused a delay in health records flowing into CalREDIE and that mistakes by the administration exacerbated the problem. “Otherwise, it reduces the authority of the state’s public health officer.” He said turnover in the top ranks of the state’s public health department is significant. The administration needs to explain the issue that led to this.” Times staff writers John Myers and Dakota Smith contributed to this report. window.fbAsyncInit = function() { FB.init({ appId : '119932621434123', xfbml : true, version : 'v2.9' }); }; (function(d, s, id){ var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) {return;} js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "https://ift.tt/1sGOfhN"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); The post Newsom says COVID-19 data is correct after administration shakeup appeared first on Shri Times News.
