#17.2 Auri

Shibisu was beat. His match with Agni must have been the lamest out of everyone. He couldn't land a single blow on him no matter how hard he tried. All the while knowing that Agni was going easy on him. Still, Agni offered him an outstretched hand and pulled him up to his wobbly feet.

"You did your best," Agni smiled encouragingly. It was an odd look on him, since he looked a lot like Khun, and Khun wouldn't have smiled like that. At least never at him. "But there is still a lot to work on with those blind spots."

Shibisu knew. But he wasn't built for agility, especially with his low shinsu tolerance. Each time they ascended another floor, it took him some time to get used to moving quickly again.

"I have something for you." Agni pulled him out of his thoughts. He opened his palm. "Give me your hand."

Shibisu complied and mirrored Agni's example. In return, Agni placed something in his palm.

"What is this?"

"It's special fish food. Hold it like this and just relax, ok?" Agni instructed as he repositioned Shibisu's arm so it was fully outstretched, palm flat.

Before Shibisu could ask, Agni had called one of his hidden lighthouses. He whistled and a fish swam out from it. It was about an arm’s length and very fast. Its color was also quite muted; he would have missed it had he not been paying attention. 

"This is Auri." Agni introduced as the fish swam around him and preened under his touch. "She's a domesticated electric eel, capable of stunning D-ranks and killing E-ranks. Her species is loyal and territorial, but they can be very timid otherwise. I want you to take care of her one day."

"What?!" Shibisu whisper-shouted through gritted teeth, afraid that he would startle the fish. "Didn't you just say that she's dangerous?"

"She can protect you." Agni pried his fist open and led him to stretch his arm out again. "Just give her this and she'll know that you're a friend."

Shibisu held his breath when the fish swam close, trying his best to not flinch or take another step back when it opened its jaw, displaying rows of needle sharp teeth that could definitely shred his flesh. Yet his fear never happened, and the fish was surprisingly docile when it nibbled on the pellet.

Despite his initial fear, he could see its appeal. It was affectionate and gentle. Granted, he always had a soft spot for cute things, even if they might be dangerous. Case in point: his team.

Shibisu tried to move his arm a little, since he was no longer as tense, but the sudden move startled the fish, and it suddenly vanished into thin air. Shibisu looked around and found nothing.

Noticing his confusion, Agni explained, "As I said, her species is very timid. They have the ability to conceal themselves with shinsu, so they can be hard to detect without observers."

The fish reappeared behind Agni, swimming near his shoulders, "Ah, there you are." Agni flicked his fingers and pointed to the lighthouse; the fish obediently swam back inside. "I will bring her again the next time we meet, so she can get used to this team."

Shibisu could only nod, knowing that refusal wasn't an option.

Agni walked away and clapped his hands to get the whole team's attention, "That's a wrap for today. A shame no one won my bet, but I hope you learnt something from this."

Endorsi clicked her tongue, "Show off."

Agni ignored her entirely, but his stance was never unguarded, ready to leap in case of sudden attack. Was every Khun raised like that?

"Hm, one more thing…" Agni walked up to Rak. "Crocodile, come with me for a moment."

Best Wells in Tears of the Kingdom #4

The Popla Foothills South Well is hidden in a small alcove of land along the shore of the lake south of the waterlogged ruins of Deya Village. Most players will discover this well in the process of activating the nearby Skyview Tower, which requires Link to enter the Popla Foothills Excavation Site to free Elmerson, the technician in charge of maintaining the towers.

This well is one of the many secret bases of a traveling chef named Aurie Taamu. Aurie Taamu’s specialty is experimenting with ingredients to achieve special effects in cooking. In the notebooks he’s left underground, Aurie Taamu describes dishes used to create resistance against extreme temperatures, as well as dishes that grant weather-related attack boosts. The notebook in the Popla Foothills South Well details ingredients that create a glow-in-the-dark effect that’s useful for Link’s exploration of the Depths.

Along with these notebooks, Aurie Taamu is also the author of the textbooks used in Ashai’s cooking class in Gerudo Town. This is where things get interesting! If you become close to Cara, Isha’s apprentice at the Starlight Memories Jewelry Shop, she’ll tell you that Isha and Ashai were once in a love triangle with Aurie Taamu.

This makes the text of his notebook in the southern Popla Foothills well all the more intriguing: “The road of a gourmand is fraught with thorns. It’s why I choose to travel alone. This life does have its share of lonely nights. That’s when you need to shine a light to keep the darkness at bay.”

Perhaps because of the mistakes he made in the past, Aurie Taamu is able to close his meditations on life, love, and cooking by offering a solid piece of advice. “There is no shame in not knowing,” he writes, “for beyond that lies the joy of knowing.”

Lucien and Gale get along like oil and a matchstick. Amateur wizard from another plane and former Archwizard out of his element? Both completely erudite? Yes please.

Auri and Shadowheart wind up close friends with a casual side relationship; both of them don't have qualms about, as Shadowheart puts it, "short-term amusements," and both of them have religious ties that greater society tends to shun.

Astarion and Taliesin are both particularly catty with each other. It's hard to tell whether they like or hate each other early on, especially when it comes to Tally's puns and Astarion's vampirism, but as they both open up, they would (and shall!) kill for each other.

If you're looking for romantic relationships, these are the ones I'm 100% sure I'm going for (I have other ideas, but I'm not putting them in until I'm sure I want to add the companions that'd be part of it):

Astarion and Wyll. Astarion uses everyone to his advantage, but Wyll is so earnest and genuine that he's the one Astarion would actually feel bad about doing that to (leading to the Act II confession: "you deserve something real." Because Wyll DOES). There's something particularly well worth exploring between an unapologetically selfish man and a man who'd give everything of himself; Wyll is kind to Astarion in a way no one else has been in his life, Astarion demands Wyll keep something of himself for himself. I've got so much invested in it. It's a really good contrast.

Lucien and Karlach. This one is partly based in canon: Karlach daydreams about Dammon if she's not romancing anyone else in her origin playthrough, and the both her and Lucien are happy-go-lucky and glad to be alive. I feel like they'd play off each other's silliness and sweetness well; besides that, him being willing to fix her engine and her being willing to protect him from just about anything really hits well for me.

Gale and Taliesin. They fall somewhere in the middle between "sweet similarity" and "spicy contrast" for me, both loving cats, both being curious about the world, both having a bit of a love for bad puns, but entirely different in home life and approach to combat. Moving into it: Gale is a man who's prepared to beg for you not to let him die when he asks for magical artifacts; if you agree right off the bat, he has to take a moment to reorganize what he was about to say. And as Tally's author said, no matter how dangerous it is to travel with his companion, he's wholly dedicated to staying by their side. That kind of devotion is something Gale does not expect. And on the other end, if you talk to Tally about himself, he mentions how at one point, his father made him loathe himself so much that he hated his own body. Compare that to Gale being the only companion to not change his opinion of you if you become a mind flayer. He still wants to marry you, the thought of leaving you never even crossing his mind. Gale's love language is soul-crushing devotion. He gives all of himself to his partner, no matter what. And that's something that would totally WRECK Taliesin.

Also, Tally 100% has to meet Morena Dekarios and get spoiled. I demand it.

Whenever the group splits into two for an activity or if they have to coz of reasons, but they are still doing the activity together, it's just that they had to form smaller groups. Wowzz am I making sense. Anywhosss Angelina takes Diego and Ignacio takes Auri and poor Javi is pissed AF and over it and has to pick which side. The triplets like to split Auri and Diego up like that to mess with them. Angi would be a great wing-girl (wingman ha), lift him high up so he can wave at his hot boyfriend when they aren't near. Honestly, I feel like making two separate lists for this

In terms of "most liked/respected" it goes like this

Aurienal: They are sociable, they are caring and compassionate, they are single-handedly managing Chrys's stress half the time so he's not either tearing heads off or imploding from his anxiety, and they can have a good time!

Chrysallus: He may be Pact Commander and Aurene's champion, but beyond the titles, a lot of people don't know him well enough to make comments. Part of that is the apparent propaganda war between Aurienal and Arioch about his personality. Chrys knows nothing about this. Otherwise, he is capable of being civil for a lot of bullshit.

Arioch: As a Courtier? There are a lot that want it dead. After joining Chrys's group and then post-PoF though, they see it as a source of entertainment, spinning wild conspiracy theories. It's seen more as a person when it opens a little shop in LA, selling potions and incense mainly. Does it still grate on people's nerves? Hell yeah, it's funny to rile people up. But at least people aren't trying to kill it.

Now the list for the Court, because they are people too and have heard enough gossip to debate this

Chrysallus: Beside the vested interest of "if we turn the dragon's champion and hero of tyria to nightmare, we'd be unstoppable!" train of thought, he's actually pretty well-liked among the Court. There was a period of time where Chrys got into all sorts of trouble for spying on the Court, but Auri was the only dreamer who knew about certain things, like tending to an injured courtier's wounds out of the kindness of his heart. This is met with a lot of confusion, but they felt respected as people. He's usually left alone for that day.

Arioch: Again, it is a source of entertainment by the Court when it was there by potion mishaps and wild mechanical creations wreaking havoc in Caledon. Popularity spiked hearing that Chrys was dead and it's Dark Hunt was complete, but fell out of favor once it left the Court for good. Now it is kill on sight if a courtier spots it.

Aurienal: For obvious reasons, they are seen as a more devout Dreamer. Let's also not forget the incident with the white stag, which Sariel took high offense with enough to attack the Grove over. They would kill courtiers on sight as a reflex, but so long as they don't trigger their fight or flight, they are usually left alone.
