The magic of mountains in Mesoamerica.
Active volcanoes covered in thick green coats of misty cloud forest and rainforest. A focal point, an epicenter, the meeting place between two oceans and two continents. The origin of the revered orchid, vanilla!
Here, an absurd amount of endemic species with very small limited distribution ranges in Central America and Mesoamerica. Out of about 700 species of reptiles living in Mesoamerica, over 200 live nowhere else. Out of about 550 species of amphibians living in Mesoamerica, over 350 live nowhere else.
And this extreme biodiversity is boosted by the presence of so many mountain ranges located within the tropics, so that “cooler” habitats (at high elevations) can exist closer to the heat of the equator. And orographic uplift (rain in the mountains) means that humid and wetter habitats (”sky islands”) can exist closer to dryland habitats (arid valleys). And also different habitats can occur so close next to each other along the slopes of a single mountain (”altitudinal zonation”). And this is in addition to how the region is the meeting place between ecosystems of South America and North America, and between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
So that there can be about 30 species of hummingbirds that only live in Mexico and Central America.
Or there can be like 11 different species of venomous palm pit vipers all in the same genus living in just a couple of mountain ranges between merely San Jose and Ciudad de Guatemala.
Or how, within the borders of Guatemala alone there are at least 40 different species of salamanders, and most of them are so-called arboreal “climbing salamanders” which live in bromeliads and fern mats growing in the branches of trees.
Like how the mangrove hummingbird only lives in brackish swamps of the mangrove forests along the seashore of a stretch of coastline only within the borders of Costa Rica, and the hummingbird depends on the nectar from the flower of one species of tea mangrove (Pelliciera rhizophorae).
Consider the Motagua beaded lizard (Heloderma charlesbogerti), a species of venomous lizard in the same genus as and closely related to the beloved Gila monster. It’s an endemic species, living only in one valley, and there are less than 200 Motagua beaded lizards surviving in the wild. It’s “one of the rarest and most endangered lizards on the planet.” And for food, it relies on the eggs of the Motagua spiny-tailed iguana (Ctenosaura palearis), of which there are less than 2,500 surviving in the wild, making it another of the planet’s most endangered lizards. Two lizards, found nowhere else, entwined in a relationship, almost extinct. But it gets more incredible. For food, the Motagua spiny-tailed iguana itself relies on the fruit of several cactus species. (One of the dryland plants that the iguana relies on is Pereskia lychnidiflora, one of the only cactus-type plants that basically produces leaves.) Without the cactus fruit, the Motagua spiny-tailed iguana would disappear. Without the Motagua spiny-tailed iguana’s eggs, the venomous Motagua beaded lizard would disappear.
Think of frogs like Bromeliohyla bromeliacia. There are colorful poisonous tree frogs whose aquatic baby tadpoles swim around in the tiny pools of rain water that temporarily collect in flowers growing on tree branches and in forest canopies. A whole multiplicity of “small” worlds existing, some ephemerally and some more permanently. Whole unique ecosystems in the treetops.
Here, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean nearly kiss. They are separated by less than 70 kilometers of land! You could stand on the peak of a Central American volcano, drinking native cocoa flavored with vanilla, and nearly toss a stone between these two marine universes.
Amphibians, reptiles, and hummingbirds in Mesoamerica were just like: “Let’s find a mist-shrouded cloud forest near the slopes of an active volcano in a single mountain range and only live in an area under 5 square kilometeres in size and only between the elevations of 1450 and 1650 meters.” (This is the famous recently-extinct golden toad of the Monteverde cloud forest and the slopes of the Arenal volcano.) Then these creatures were like: “Also I’m probably extravagantly colored with neon blue or fiery orange or bright pink or something.”
“And I’ll live nowhere else on the planet.”

I spent part of yesterday helping a couple of friends with some much-needed yard work in preparation for spring. No, these aren't the friends in question--they're two frogs I ran across in the process! On the left is a northern red-legged frog (Rana aurora), while the green one on the right is a Pacific tree frog (Pseudacris regilla). Both are quite small, under two inches long.
I felt bad for disturbing them, but with temperatures in the fifties it was warm enough they could relocate themselves to someplace safe before nightfall. (The yard is full of all sorts of great little hidey-holes if you are a small critter.) And all the debris that was picked up just ended up in the compost heap, so any invertebrates hiding there would still be safe, since nothing gets bagged up or burned.
I want to say spring is here early, but we're getting a cold front moving in early next week, so it'll be time to batten everything down again. Still, we're due for much milder conditions than lots of other folks this time of year, so I'm not complaining.

!!WARNING!!
Don't read if you are squeamish or don't like extreme gore, violence, and horrific deaths because there's a lot. Also in later chapters there is mention and flashbacks of past abuse.

You reach the Enchanted forest and almost get eaten.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The sirens in this aren't based on real sirens.
Mine have color changing eyes, elemental crystals and powers, and different forms like humanoid siren and full siren in the water, as well as on land human form and animal form based on the clan you choose.
This is a reader-insert type story, so I will write the reader-insert parts like so:
(y/n):your name (l/n):last name (e/c):eye color (h/c):hair color (h/l):hair length (b/s):bust size(chest size) (c/s):clothes size (n/l):nail length (n/c):nail color (l/c):lip color (b/t):blood type (f/s):favorite smell (f/t):favorite taste(sweet/salty/sour/etc.) (f/c):favorite color (s/f/c):second favorite color, (s/c):skin color (f/e):favorite element(ice/lightning/air/etc.) (e/p/c):element power color(based on your favorite element, fire=red, ice=light blue, water=dark blue, air=white, lightning=yellow, light=orange, dark=purple, metal=gray, earth=green.) (f/j):favorite jewel (f/a):favorite animal (f/f):favorite flower (f/w):favorite weather (f/o):favorite ornaments/accessories (it can be more than one.) (o/p):ornament place(hair/ankle/neck/etc.)(If you have multiple, just imagine where they all are.) (c/l):clothing length (c/c):clothing colors (c/n): clan name (Snake tongue=Snake, Bear claw=Bear, East pacific=Spider, Dragon scale=Dragon, Tiger teeth=Tiger, Bunny tail=Bunny, Frog spots=Frog, Bird feather=Bird, Horseshoe=Horse, Turtle shell=Turtle, Butterfly wings=Butterfly, also feel free to make your own) (c/a): clan animal(based on clan)(f/d)favorite drink (f/a/d): favorite alcoholic drink
Yes, I know it's a long list. But, I wanted to give as much freedom to the reader as possible, and I know this isn't how sirens are, but this is my version of them.

Chapter 5
Rivers And Mountains
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heading south for two thousand miles then turn and head southeast for three thousand miles, we finally reach the Enchanted Forest, I walk into the captains’ quarters to alert the captains of our arrival at the humongous forest’s beachy edge, “We’re in Dragon scale territory captains!”.
Sun sighs then stands, “We’v been traveling for two weeks now and we’v asked ya to call us Sun and Moon since the third day, how many times must we ask ye?”.
“But-” I start and Moon cuts me off, “No butsss.” he says while extending the ‘s’ like a hiss.
“We’ve made it to the Enchanted Forest, the tallest tree in the world is in the center of the forest.” I state continuing where I left off.
The twin captains roll their optics at the notice of me sidestepping their request again, “Alright, can ye tell us what of the land is Dragon territory?” Sun huffs then points to the map on the table of the enchanted forest and all surrounding areas.
“The main forest with the thirty-seven thousand meters tall tree named the tree of Tatsuki in it’s center and trees of all varieties ranging from three thousand meters to seven thousand meters, the two closest of the three islands above the mainland, and the bottom half of the closest district in the Celve region.”, “Then what is the third island?” Moon asks.
“Horseshoe territory. The island was gifted to the Horseshoe clan by Kenatatsu the king of Dragon claw to gain their trust and form an alliance between the two, the island itself is the only part of the Enchanted Forest that houses more beings with human-like intellect than just dragons, on that island lives humans, horse sirens, dragon sirens, normal dragons, and one other species of intelligence that lives only on that island. That's why when you said that you were meeting up with some from the Enchanted Forest I knew that we'd be headed to Pegasus Island." I inform them, "Ar' Pegasi the other species yer was talkin' 'bout? I'm guessing that based on the island's name.” Moon responds.
“Yes, they are, pegasi are half dragon and half horse. When the first pegasus was born a burst of energy caused trees to sprout, trees that no one had heard of, they’re called Toumaki trees and are only on that one island.” I state, “There ar’ pegasi, can I ride one?!” Sun screeched excitedly while flapping his hands.
“I mean, if that’s what you’re into.” I state with a smirk, Sun stares at me with a confused look and Moon notices and snickers, he then whispers something into one of Sun’s audio sensors.
Sun’s cooling fans whir to life, he lightly blushes, and steam shoots out of all of his joints as he realizes the innuendo, “That's not what I meant!”, Moon gives a raspy chuckle at his reaction, “Ya know Y/n’s just messing with ya.”
Sun's blush darkens a little and he clears his throat into his fist, "I knew that, I was just trying to play along." He states as he looks away from me and Moon, "Sure ya were, we totally believe that." I state and laugh.
"I really was!" He states as he crosses his arms and puffs out his silicone cheeks in a pout, "We could go back and forth with this all day, but we need to meet Captain Casey first." Moon states, "Fine, but ye gonna answer me question first Y/n." Sun negotiates, "Okay." I agree.
“I’d advise that you don’t unless you’ve known them for a while and they trust you, you also have to ask their permission first and foremost, also don’t just go up to one and ask to fly on their back. Most importantly never come up to a horse or a pegasus from behind, you will get kicked in the crotch at two hundred miles per second because they’re not normal horses, aka your internals will explode from the sheer force.” I state while maintaining a serious look to show them that I'm not exaggerating.
The twin captains visibly cringe at my last comment then they swallow the lumps in their throats at the same time, "Definitely don't do that Sun." Moon states while glaring at Sun, "I won't." Sun states with a sigh.
"Well if we visit the Tatsuki tree after this then you may be able to fly, but not on a pegasus, and I said maybe because Tatsuyo isn't a people person." I state, "Okay, we'll go after we come back to the ship to get ye." Moon states and they start to walk to the doors, "Hold up, I'm going with you two!" I shout as I catch up with them on the main deck.
"No ye'r not, this trip will contain very sensitive information." Sun states, "Tell me then, have you guys ever walked through the Enchanted forest?" I ask with my hands on my hips, "No and we'r not going to, we'r goin through the bottom of Celve district three." Moon states angrily.
The rest of the crew see the argument and start to watch to see who wins, "No you're not, pirates are banned from Celve let alone district three! The people in district three are horrendous, they will tear you limb from limb just because you're pirates! The only way you're going to get to Pegasus Island is if you go to the Enchanted Forest, do you know what lives in the Enchanted Forest!?" I state after I raise my voice, the captain's have never heard me raise my voice, let alone to them, so they're standing there with matching shocked expressions, I wait a bit longer and notice that they're not going to say anything,"Well there's dragons, giant crabs, giant butterflies, giant lizards, giant bees, giant everything! They all eat humans or anything the size of a human, and yes they eat metal, in fact dragons love eating metal it helps their digestive tracts! Not only that but everything in that Forest will eat you alive, and all the trees are jumbo sized, all the plants are jumbo size, the flowers are the size of our normal trees and will eat anything they can reach!"
The two captains stare at me and awe, when they finally process exactly what I said their expressions turn grim.
They both look at each other then look back at me,"Fine ye can come, but when we tell ye to leave you're going to leave, and ye ain't going to listen to a single thing we talk about with Captain Casey!" Moon grumbles in annoyance, Sun nods his head in agreeance and they push down the plank to deboard the ship, before Moon steps on the board to leave the ship he turns to the crew who are still watching and yells at them,"And what are y'all looking at?! Get back to work!" The crew all quickly look away, scared, and scurry back to their positions.
We descend the plank onto the beach and walk forward ‘till I’m three meters away from the ship, the sand swishes between my toes because of the fact that I still haven’t acquired a pair of shoes yet. The wind blows past the skirt that I refuse to take off, it was the last gift I got from my brother before… Anyway I still wear it regardless of my pronouns. The twin captains join me on the tan particles and order the crew to remove the plank and guard the ship, they turn to the bright greenery of the lush forest.
They share an apprehensive look as I start to head in, "WAIT!" Sun yells, causing me to look at him in shock, "Ye don't have any shoes, ye'r going to stab yer feet." He says that he gestures to my bare toes.
"How've ye not cut yer feet on loose nails in the ship yet? Moon says as steps towards to scoop me up.
"Woah, hey!" I shout as he sits me on his right shoulder, "Sirens have tougher skin than most creatures, even in our other forms, though Shield-scaled sirens have the strongest skin and scales of the siren species. Plus there's no need for you to carry me, I've been in and out of this forest so many times without even a scuff." I say with a huff.
"Welp, yer already up here so." Moon responds then starts heading for the greenery, "Hey moon, wait for me!" Sun shouts.
I tell them ways to avoid different giant homicidal animals' nests but the first time they completely ignore me, that's how we got in this situation. Slime and shit scented mucus covers us in this dimly lit area, the smell of stomach acid slowly getting stronger as the dissolving fluid comes closer to the top. A humongous fucking flower, that's what we're stuck inside, waiting for the acid to finish accumulating and release from the stem into the petals that have incased us in this large space that seems so small because of us three being jammed together.
"Damn it! I told you to go right, not left! This is why I wanted to walk instead of being carried!" I scolded the twins from my perch on Moon's shoulder, "Now, there's only one way we can leave. I'ma need you both to listen very closely to my instructions.” I state after I turn their heads towards me.
I tell them the plan and they nod, I hold out my hand so Sun can give me his sword. The center of the floral ceiling is the weakest point but out of reach due to it being seven feet taller then me when I stand on Moon’s shoulders.
🌙~Pov change~🌙
Swallowed and melted by a tall flower, what a way ta go. We go into this situation when we came to a fork in the road, Y/n tells us to go right, the path looks old and like it hasn’t been used in a long time, large vines with thorns coil around tree roots and hang from above. Sun being the way that he is decided against going that way, so Y/n doesn’t get hurt. Without saying a word he takes the left path with long strides, I don’t want to separate from him, he gets lost easily. I follow him through the ferns all while ignoring the harsh whisper pouring out of the siren on my shoulder and catch up with him. We walk for a while on the well worn path, nothing bad seems to be here, at least that’s what me and Sun thought. Now we’re in a carnivorous, purple lily, with black goo dripping from the ceiling. The slime doesn’t seem to have any affects on any of us but the smell of acid is burning my sensors and Sun is panicking, his determination slowly deteriorating as he repeatedly tries to stab the petals that have cage us but his sword just slides off because of the slick black liquid dropping from above. I reach over and put my hand on his shoulder, he stops to face me with terror in his optics, like prey in a predator’s grasp.
“Ye been trying to make a hole for twelve minutes now, ya have tried every petal in every way possible.” I tell him in a calm voice to calm him, his shoulders slump.
"Damn it! I told you to go right, not left! This is why I wanted to walk instead of being carried!" Y/n says in a semi-harsh tone, they turn my head with a hand and turns Sun’s with one of their legs, "Now, there's only one way we can leave. I'ma need you both to listen very closely to my instructions.” They state while maintaining eye contact.
“The center of the floral ceiling is the weakest point, Moon is gonna have to stand on Sun’s shoulders while I stand on Moon’s,  that way we can reach the top. I’ll need Sun’s sword so I can stab it through, but the petals are so thick that stabbing even the weakest spot will only let the blade go though half way, so after I stab it Sun’s gonna need to jump so it’ll got the rest of the way through. When it’s in there fully it’ll be easy to slide the blade down along the side of the flower and cut a way out on the side near the ground like Sun was trying to do.  Okay everyone understand the plan?” They ask, we both answer with a nod, Sun’s determination returns tenfold as he hands them his sword.
Sun kneels so I can step onto his shoulders and grabs my ankles so I can’t slip off, “Eveyone ready? I’m goin’ to stand up!” Sun says under me then stands in one swift motion causing me to sway forward in backward.
“W-Woah, be careful!” Y/n says with a shaky voice from the sudden elevation change, Sun apologies as we all stabilize ourselves.
Y/n starts to stand up on my shoulders and I look up as I grab their ankles to make sure they don’t fall, looking up was the wrong move.
‘O-Oh shit! I forgot they’re wearing a skirt, I can see their underwear!’
Me and Sun got them many pairs of socks, underwear, and we were going to get them bras but they already had a waterproof binder. They didn’t have any of those things before because, well… They live in their siren form most their life. Sun noticed their lack of under garments a week after they lived on the ship, they tripped in the storage room when they both were looking for wood glue. Long story short he got an eye full of ass and turned into a sputtering mess, he didn’t let them leave our quarters until we docked and brang them underwear. They refused to wear any of it for a few days but we finally got them to understand why they needed the extra clothing, but they still refuse to wear the socks.
‘They’re wearing the star print ones me and Sun agreed to get them.’
Me and Sun were arguing about what underwear we should get them. We argued about the color, the style, the print, so we ended up with an assortment of colors and patterns from each style. The one pair we agreed on were the panties are that are white with deep red, dark blue, and bright yellow stars of all sizes across them, the pair they are wearing at this moment.
I’m so distracted that I don’t hear the to people I’m sandwiched between ‘till Sun looks up to see what I’m doing, he realizes and positions his he slightly to the right and notices the panties. His optics widen and he starts to lose his balance which knocks me out my trance, he rebalances be for we all fall, he breathes a sigh of relief as Y/n gets our attention.
“I can’t reach! Moon, could you lift me a few inches higher?” They ask as they stretch their arms and legs.
“Y-Yup, on it!” I respond as I let go of one of their ankles to remove my hat, I hang it on my belt then return my hand to their ankle to lift them and let them stand on my head.
“I can reach now!” They exclaim before they stab it center causing Sun to wobble, “Sun jump!”
Sun slams a foot on the ground then pushes as hard as he can, the sword slices the rest of the way and Y/n pulls the sword down the side with both hands as we brake formation and fall out the hole made from one of the petals being cut down the middle. Me and Sun hit the ground harshly and Y/n land gracefully on their feet like a cat, they slide the air with the grace of a skilled swords man to flick the green blood of the flower off Sun’s sword then goes to put it in a holster on their hip. They realize that there isn’t a holster and look at the sword in confusion, they seem to snap out of a fog and turn around to make eye contact with me. They look past me so I turn to see Sun sitting with his back facing us, I look back at Y/n and they put a finger to their lips to gesture me to not tell him. They smile and make their way to Sun to pat his shoulder to see if he’s okay, he stands and brushes himself off while reassuring them that he’s fine. He turns to them to inspect them to make sure they haven’t gotten hurt, he doesn’t even find a scratch and huffs in relief.
‘Just who are they?’ I think to myself as I start to get up from the ground.
Sun finally looks my way as I rise and they both make their way over to me, “Well at least we’re all okay! Let keep going, I was hoping we could reach there before dark.” Sun says with his signature bright smile, acting as if we didn’t just escape getting digested by a mother-fucking flower, typical Sun.
I shake me head and smile as he bounces after Y/n, letting them lead the way this time.
My Connections to Country: A Critical Self-Reflection
Each afternoon I walk with my dog throughout the surrounding lands of my home, timing this languid journey to align with the sleepy sun that sets heavily somewhere on the western horizon. This is my favourite part of the day because I am surrounded by natural spaces: time-worn fig trees sigh under their own weight, creeks trickle in resistance to drought, and gums fray in long strips of rough bark. Here, I can breathe a little better. I am not weighed down by the polluted air that strains my lungs, nor by the overwhelming mass of information I am constantly force-fed on social media. Instead, I am invited to attune myself to the surroundings: the eerie call from a Queensland Bush Stone-curlew, or the gentle breeze that sends tall gums rustling. These sounds layer upon one another, becoming a familiar sort of percussive music. This routine has become an integral part of my life – a sort of meditation that helps maintain my mental health. I feel a significant connection to this land as a place of evolving beauty – a sanctuary for life. I know these narrow silken streams, their volatile tendencies to rise and fall; I know the crow’s echoed craw, the green frogs' burp; I know the ageing, strangled growth of the water-bogged eucalyptus tree. I feel that this is my home, yet I know I do not belong here. I do not have precise language to explain the natural phenomena, nor can I call upon my ancestors to remember the land’s stories. “I must pay my respects to the Traditional Owners, the Turrbal and Yuggera peoples, who have conserved these lands for time immemorial.” This testimony is a familiar practice to me, one which I have carried out most often within places of learning. Yet I have not known the personal significance of this honouring until my participation in this course.
Throughout ABST2030, I have become keenly aware of the integral role of Aboriginal people’s connection to their Country. This prevailing aspect of identity fuels the continued conservation of environments and sustains cultural practices where memory, language and Country are inextricably linked. The unknowable significance of Aboriginal people’s spiritual belonging to their lands has transformed my perspective. I have further embraced the lands upon which I inhabit while strengthening my participation in its maintenance. This knowledge has also informed my opinion surrounding the generative role of Indigenous creative expression, which positively contributes to Australia’s story of reconciliation. As such, this text represents my journey of learning about Aboriginal creative expression. I will closely examine the role of my standpoint in my interpretation of the course content and reflect on my personal experience of the central ideas of my research project – that is, my connections to Country. This unfolding will be presented through the mode of storying – a critical research mode offered within Louise Phillips and Tracey Bunda’s Research through, with and as storying (2018). I hope this writing will help to consolidate my learnings to date, demonstrating a complex pathway that engenders personal reconciliation. As this storying experiment is grounded in my learnings of Indigenous creative expression, I hope that my journey will show its potential to bring us together.
I took this course having previously completed Australia Pacific Indigenous Arts (ARTT2103) with Dr Sally Butler and Introduction to Aboriginal Studies (ABST1000) with Gamilaraay woman Lisa Oliver at The University of Queensland (UQ). This academic background provided me with a foundation of knowledge surrounding Aboriginal histories, cultures, and identities. But I wanted to learn more about the strategies through which Indigenous peoples centred their voices in contemporary contexts. As I am studying Art History, ABST2030 seemed to be the perfect opportunity to learn about Aboriginal cultures through the diversity of creative practice. Here, I thought I would have the opportunity to examine artists’ intentions behind works that I love. I would be able to explore innovative manifestations of Indigenous ontologies. I could gather a deeper understanding of what Aboriginal worldviews are while learning how they continue to be shaped. Ultimately, I think I wanted to understand more about a culture that continues to thrive almost parallel to mine. I did not expect, however, that my learnings would reveal as much as they did. From Sam Cook’s ‘trauma ecologies’ to Evelyn Araluen’s lyrical poetry, ABST2030 transformed my previous assumptions by challenging my worldview.
Throughout this course, I became aware that my perspective surrounding Indigenous matters was largely formed by three overlapping spheres of identity: intellectual growth, social foundations, and cultural heritage. These aspects of my identity have shaped my approach to learning, strengthening my interest in alternative modes of existence. However, they have also been challenged at times because this course has exposed me to their limitations. I must first acknowledge that my pathway as an academic has been highly productive, both for my personal growth and intellectual development. However, I have found that learning about Indigenous cultures has challenged the nature of my learning by demonstrating the plurality of knowledge. Through exploring the diverse ecologies of Aboriginal cultures, I have become more acutely aware of the boundaries of Western academia. Second, my strong connections to my two best friends have continually broadened my perspective, making me a better and more inclusive person. They have both taught me to celebrate difference and to protect one’s home in solidarity. I have known both women for eight years now and they never fail to challenge me, accepting my moments of ignorance as growing pains in my development. Finally, my white, Anglo-Saxon heritage has become more evident as a signifier of privilege. I acknowledge this aspect of my identity has allowed me freedoms that others cannot access with the same ease. I know that my whiteness is something I will never have to justify or fight for. Yet this distinction has also emphasised the lack of inherent spiritual connection I feel in relation to my cultural heritage. I have never felt a sense of, as Wesley Enoch describes, “responsibility to look at our stories, and beyond ourselves, to pass those stories on to others to create […] change in this country” (SongSummit, 2012, 3:11 - 3:24). I feel a sense of ignorance that extends from a personal absence of storying to that of Aboriginal culture. As such, I have taken away from this course that one of the most valuable practices I may continue to perform is listening. This mode of engagement is diverse, ranging from privileging Indigenous people’s stories to embodied ‘deep listening’ in nature (Browning, Bennett, Couzens & Paton, 2020).
In “Listening to Country”, Bundjalung and Kullilli presenter Daniel Browning (2020) leads an immersive storying experience with four Aboriginal women around the generative role of ‘deep listening’ to one’s Country. I have found this to be meaningful to the development of my connection to the lands surrounding my home and presents another way through which I can honour Aboriginal people’s contributions. I live in a quiet pocket of north Brisbane, Meanjin, surrounded by neighbourhoods that I know as Kelvin Grove, Newmarket, and Redhill. I work at Kelvin Grove OSHC for which I understand the local Turrbal peoples call Barrambin, or ‘windy place’. Throughout ABST2030, I started to research the stories of these lands to learn about their cultural significance. I have found it difficult to find the correct names as there are multiple meanings for one term and numerous errors at colonial hands. But I have found that the meandering Enoggera Creek, which runs from Enoggera Reservoir to the Brisbane River (generalised to maiwar, or maiwah) (Kane, Kerkhove, & Memmott, 2022, p. 17), was named after the Turrbal word Euoggera, meaning 'place of water' or 'place of breeze' (ABC Local, 2009). The local peoples held corroboree at Bancroft Park on Enoggera Creek, a stretch of water known as buyuba, meaning “straight shin bone” (Kane, Kerkhove, & Memmott, 2022, p. 33). I have found this learning has transformed my perspective because I can relate to the lands through another perspective, one forged through connections and memory. Whereas Aboriginal peoples understand language as inextricably linked with Country, my language fails to describe the lands that I walk through. My language is reminiscent of the violent intervention of settler-colonial Europeans; my presence reflects the continual neocolonial systems of oppression that restrict Indigenous people’s ownership of land. While I have found my learning to be a journey of great wonder and immense awe, I have undoubtedly felt that familiar sense of guilt that pervades my experience in an unreconciled Australian context.
In “Toolkits Live: Aboriginal Histories and Poetry”, Evelyn Araluen (2017) discusses the generative force that shame can engender. She advocates for the importance of respectful listening and critical engagement with various forms of Indigenous creative expression. I really appreciate her open discussion around the ‘messiness’ of reconciliation in colonial-settler societies because I don’t always know how to navigate the political complexities that surround European-Indigenous relations. I feel her words have allowed me some space to talk more honestly about my (mis)understandings while strengthening my solidarity with Indigenous peoples. I have learnt to demonstrate my solidarity with Indigenous peoples through personal choices: caring for my lands, supporting Aboriginal businesses, and reading Indigenous poetry. I have learnt to honour Indigenous stories by removing the potential biases of my worldview from my understanding. I have learnt to reconcile a plurality of differences through a significant common goal: the sustained care for Aboriginal peoples’ Country. But perhaps most importantly, I have learnt to listen.
What Do Tree Frogs Eat
New Post has been published on https://www.petculiars.com/what-do-tree-frogs-eat/
What Do Tree Frogs Eat
Tree frogs will usually be seen on tall vegetation, especially on trees. This is where their name comes from. This article will give you a few pointers on the tree frog diet.
The colorful appearance and considerably small size, make tree frogs very popular exotic pets. There isn’t just one tree frog type but a bunch, belonging to families like Hyperoliidae, Centrolenidae, Hylidae, and Rhacophoridae. Even a few genera, like Pedostibes of the Bufonidae family or the Boophis of the Mantellidae family, will have a few tree frogs among them. Even so, the ones considered the true tree frogs are frogs from the Hylidae family, although this particular family also has semi-aquatic or terrestrial species. Most, if not all of the tree frogs, will be found on tall shrubs and trees near of still-water bodies, regardless of their actual genera or family.
Tree frogs can have a lot of different color ranges, from gray, brown, or green, to a mix of brighter colors. You should also know that most bright-colored tree frogs are considered highly toxic. As a camouflage defensive system, some frogs will also have the ability to change the color of their body. Some might even have different patterns and designs on their body like spots and lines.
You might also like my articles on the diet of normal frogs and cute names for frogs.
They usually have a body length that could range from 1 to 6 inches. Their weight will also be anywhere between 2 and 17 grams. These frogs will have a lifespan between 2 and 4 years, and sometimes more. The tree frog has long legs, perfect for climbing and jumping, as an adaptive measure for arboreal life. To cling to leaves, branches, or stems, these creatures also have adhesive toe pads. They have almost binocular vision due to their protruding, round, and big eyes. To catch their prey, tree frogs will use their very sticky tongues, just like most other frogs.
The Diet of Tree Frogs
Although some tree frogs are seen hunting during the daytime, this only happens if they’re hungry enough, as these creatures are mostly nocturnal. Usually, tree frogs are carnivorous by nature, although their general diet will differ slightly depending on their species and geographical location. Their usual diet will be made from a combination of small invertebrates, worms, and insects. Experts have also noticed that there are species, especially on the larger side, that will eat small fish, other frogs, and even small mammals. One of the most popular tree frogs is the Cuban frog, which can be found in North America and is the largest known tree frog. These frogs are known to be great climbers, which enables them to hunt and feed on a lot of creatures, like bird hatchlings, crustaceans, other frogs, lizards, snakes, spiders, snails, and insects.
Food for Pet Tree Frogs
These frogs can usually be kept as pets, as most of them are docile in nature and very attractive in appearance. This is why a lot of people will want to own one of these exotic creatures as a pet. Out of all the tree frogs, the most popular breeds are the red-eyed frog, the Australian green tree frog, and the American green tree frog. It might seem easy to attend for a tree frog at first, but before getting one, you should have extensive knowledge of these creatures and the proper way in which you can care for them. Depending on their actual species and sizes, these requirements can differ.
When it comes to actually feeding your pet tree frog, you should always have a supply of live mealworms, flies, and live crickets on hand. Keep in mind that you will have to understand your particular breed and attend to its individual requirements and needs. For example, the Pacific tree frog will eat mostly ants, flies, beetles, and spiders, while the green tree frogs will like worms and crickets more. Most of the time, you will feed your tree frog with worms and insects, especially the gut-loaded ones. You should always try to get prey of appropriate size based on the size of your frog.
If you have a juvenile frog, then you can use cockroaches, moths, and flies as part of its daily diet. You will have to feed an adult frog around two to three times per week. You can also give them two to five small crickets every other day. Before giving it to your frog, try to dust the insect with multivitamin powder and calcium. You will also have to mist your frog with water that has no chlorine, each day, preferably in the morning. You should also have a separate enclosure to use for feeding. When it comes to the pet tree frog, you can get live crickets or other types of food from the pet store. Tadpoles won’t be carnivores at first and will require pond plants and algae for a healthy diet. You can also feed them boiled lettuce leaves until they grow and turn to a carnivorous diet.
As you might already know, frogs will stick their tongues out to hunt their prey. THey will eat any insects that get stuck on their tongues, including flies or moths. Although they will usually just stay put and wait for the prey to land on their tongues, they might jump or leap in an effort to catch prey. Frogs don’t have teeth good enough to chew or even cut their food, so they will swallow it whole. Tree frogs will like to hunt live insects even when kept as pets, although babies will still have to be fed. Although you will have to feed them consistently and regularly, you should try to avoid overfeeding them.
Hello, local stamp nerd here. Look at these boys!
Frogs are seen on four new stamps in a booklet of 20, featuring digital illustrations of four North American frogs: the Pacific tree frog, the northern leopard frog, the American green tree frog and the squirrel tree frog. Working with a primarily green color palette and touches of brown, artist Nancy Stahl captured the essence of each animal with enough important defining features to make each recognizable. Art director William J. Gicker designed the stamps.
Release date is TBD
