Retrospectiva y análisis del álbum.

Historia y contexto

Si buscas enterarte de qué álbum antescedió a la salida de With The Beatles o no tienes idea de quiénes son los Beatles o cómo es que comenzaron su carrera musical, te invito a que leas mis dos trabajos previos:

Please Please Me (1963)

Las canciones sin álbum: entre «Please Please Me» y «With The Beatles»

Te recomiendo leerlos ya que aquí solo hablaré de la creación de With The Beatles.

El ascenso inevitable

Con Please Please Me, los cuatro de Liverpool consiguieron su primer Número Uno. Su inevitable ascenso los llevó a cosechar el single más vendido en la historia de Gran Bretaña: She Loves You.

El inmenso éxito significó una agenda mucho más apretada para grabar su próximo álbum. El 13 de octubre de 1963 se presentaron en el programa Sunday Night At The London Palladium, donde fueron vistos por un público de 15 millones de espectadores. Al mes siguiente tocaron para la Reina en The Royal Variety Show y poco después cosecharían su tan esperado éxito en los Estados Unidos con su actuacion en The Ed Sullivan Show. Durante esta época, la prensa británica acunó el término de la "beatlemanía" para referise al impacto de la banda sobre sus fanáticos.

En este contexto, a pesar de no repetir la fenomenal hazaña de grabar diez canciones en diez horas, la grabación y producción de With The Beatles fue toda una odisea. Grabaron en cuatro sesiones distanciadas entre sí debido a las obligaciones del grupo.

Habida cuenta de esas circunstancias, With The Beatles no es sólo una gran secuela, sino un logro en sí mismo; el solo hecho de probar que podían hacer otro disco sólido constituía un gran éxito. Pero fueron más allá de eso. Aquí es donde "los flequilludos" se convirtieron en verdaderos profesionales, donde los cuatro chicos de Liverpool se consolidaron oficialmente como estrellas pop. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

La primera sesión fue el 18 de julio de 1963: los Beatles llegaron a los Estudios EMI a las diez de la mañana. Grabaron hasta las 13.30, cuando debieron salir rumbo al Playhouse Theatre de Londres para grabar una aparición en el programa de radio de la BBC Saturday Club (grabaciones que después serían recopiladas en BBC Live). Regresaron a eso de las cinco de la tarde donde continuaron trabajando en el álbum sin siquiera parar para cenar. La enorme dedicación de los jóvenes por trabajar en su próximo álbum se condecendía con su disfrute genuino del proceso de grabación.

Lo que más nos gusta es entrar en el estudio para grabar discos nuevos... Lo que más nos gusta es escuchar cómo una de nuestras canciones toma forma en un estudio de grabación... y después escuchar las cintas para ver cómo salió. — Paul McCartney, 1963

Retomaron las grabaciones el 11 y 12 de septiembre y una última sesión el 3 de octubre.

With The Beatles mantuvo el formato de Please Please Me de contener tanto composiciones propias como covers por dos motivos:

Por un lado, los compromisos en vivo de la banda impedían que pudieran concentrarse en el disco varios días seguidos y de la misma manera, las canciones había que componerlas al vuelo: tanto Lennon como McCartney recuerdan discutir ideas en situaciones lejos de lo ideal, como habitaciones de hotel y micros de giras.

Por otro lado, existía un motivo comercial: no querían cambiar demasiado la fórmula que había hecho del primer disco un éxito espectacular.

Esto, junto a otras similitudes, como la observación de McCartney sobre que "Money (That's What I Want) provocaba las mismas reacciones en vivo que "Twist And Shout", hacen de Please Please Me y With The Beatles álbumes hermanos.

Cuando With The Beatles salió en el Reino Unido el 22 de noviembre de 1963, el disco resultó mejor de lo que nadie asociado con el proyecto hubiera imaginado, especialmente considerando el poco tiempo que tenía la banda por encontrarse cada vez con más demanda. Desplazó a Please Please Me en la cima del ranking británico de discos, y rápidamente vendió más de medio millón de ejemplares en dicho país. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

Madurez musical

Aunque las similitudes con Please Please Me son evidentes, With The Beatles presenta unos Beatles mucho más maduros que en su debut. El éxito desmedido del primer disco permitió que los Beatles se tomaran ciertas libertades en cuanto la elección de canciones. Sobre todo, en su segundo álbum predominó el R&B y el Motown, reflejo de los gustos de Lennon y la idea que él tenía para la banda.

Es evidente la influencia de Smokey Robinson (a quien alguna vez declaro Lennon como "la voz más perfecta que hay") no sólo en el cover del hit de los Miracles, "You've Really Got A Hold on Me", sino también en los temas propios de Lennon, como "Not A Second Time".

Acompañando esta faceta más madura del grupo, With The Beatles señala el comienzo de la experimentación de George Martin con las técnicas de sonido y grabación:

(...) muchas canciones del disco tienen primeras voces grabadas en dos pistas; en varias, Martin toca el piano o el órgano y, en unos pocos casos, hay pedacitos de algunos instrumentos editados e insertados por medio de cintas en las tomas definitivas. De todos modos, en términos generales el disco es un fiel reflejo del sonido en vivo de los Beatles. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

La portada

La icónica imágen de la portada fue obra del fotógrafo británico Robert Freeman. Los Beatles habían quedado impresionados las fotografías que Freeman había tomado del músico estadounidense John Coltrane.

George Harrison expresó que With The Beatles fue el principio de la participación activa en el arte del grupo.

El grupo le pidió a Freeman que se inspirara en las fotografías que su amiga Astrid Kirchherr les había tomado en Hamburgo entre 1960 y 1962.

Para lograr este resultado, el 22 de agosto de 1963 los fotografió en un pasillo de un hotel. Para adaptarse al formato cuadrado de la portada se puso a Ringo Star en la esquina inferior derecha, diciendo que era el último en unirse al grupo y también porque era el más bajo de estatura.

McCartney describió el resultado como "malhumorado" y agregó:

Nos dispuso en el pasillo de un hotel, muy poco parecido a un estudio. El pasillo estaba bastante oscuro y había una ventana al final. Usando la fuente natural de luz de esta ventana que venía desde la derecha, tomó cada una de esas fotos malhumoradas. La mayoría de la gente cree que tuvo que trabajar en ellas un montón de tiempo. Pero fue sólo una hora. Se sentó, tomó un par de rollos, y eso fue todo. — Paul McCartney, 1963

El concepto original era que la imagen ocupara de borde a borde la totalidad de la portada, sin sangrado, título o crédito del artista, un concepto que iba en contra de la práctica de la industria musical de la época, por lo que fue rechazado. El primer álbum en llevar una portada de borde a borde fue el debut homónimo de los Rolling Stones, lanzado cinco meses después.

Canción por canción

1. It Won't Be Long

Esta canción, compuesta por John Lennon y atribuída al dúo Lennon/McCartney, es la perfecta apertura del álbum

La letra usa un juego de palabras entre «be long» («mucho tiempo») y «belong» («pertenecer»), similar a lo que previamente Lennon había hecho con «Please Please Me». El final, en cuanto a su estructura musical, es muy similar con el de «She Loves You».

Tiene casi todos los rasgos característicos de los primeros años: voz principal grabada en dos pistas, un juego de palabras ingenioso ("It won't be long 'till I belong'), ásperos riffs de guitarra y una sentida armonía tríple. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

2. All I've Got to Do

Como cité con anterioridad, Lennon había expresado que All I've Got to Do fue uno de sus múltiples intentos por imitar a Smokey Robinson.

Compuesta por Lennon, las estrofas están construidas sobre los acentos débiles, una difícil figura recurrente que depende de un preciso engranaje de la guitarra rítmica y el hit-hat. Las espectrales armonías vocales que se escuchan en el estribillo influenciron a todo el mundo, desde Abba hasta los Zombies. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

3. All My Loving

Paul compuso All My Loving durante un tour-bus. Cuando llegaron al destino, escribió la música con un piano en su camerino. Fue grabada el 30 de julio de 1963 y pronto se convirtió en una pieza fundamental de sus presentaciones en vivo.

Es la primera canción que escribo primero la letra. Cosa que nunca hago, y difícilmente repito desde esta canción. Siempre es como una especie de acompañamiento. — Paul McCartney

Lennon expreso su aprecio por esta canción en una entrevista para Playboy.

Lennon: Temo decir que por desgracia, Paul escribió "All my Loving" (risas) Revista Playboy: ¿Por qué? Lennon: Porque es un excelente trabajo... Pero yo añadí una formidable guitarra de fondo.

La letra sigue el modelo de "carta canción" también usado en «P.S. I Love You».

Si no se dejan distraer por las estrofas y los estribillos tremendamente pegadizos, descubrirán un punte huérfano e inusual comuesto no para una parte constratante de la letra sino para un solo de Harrison con toques country. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

4. Don't Bother Me

Durante el verano de 1963, mientras estaba enfermo en la cama, Harrison compuso su primera contribución en un disco de los. Beatles. Aún sobrevive la grabación que Harrison hizo de si mismo aquel día en que empezó a componer en su habitación.

No fue una canción muy buena. La llegué a olvidar completamente una vez que estaba en el álbum. Por lo menos me dejó claro que todo lo que tenía que hacer era perseverar, y quizás algún día compondría algo bueno. — George Harrison

El humor hosco y desolado de la letra —«So go away, leave me alone, don't bother me» («Así que lárgate, déjame solo, no me molestes»)— era algo inusual en los Beatles de aquella época, pero habría de ser característico en las composiciones posteriores de Harrison.

Los Beatles nunca la interpretaron en directo, como ninguna otra canción de George, salvo «If I Needed Someone».

Luis Alberto Spinetta hizo una emocionante y hermosa versión en vivo, que recomiendo ampliamente oirla.

5. Little Child

McCartney describió «Little Child» como una «canción de relleno». Admitió que robó la línea «I'm so sad and lonely» («Estoy tan triste y solo») de la canción «Whistly My Love» del baladista y actor británico Elton Hayes.

En una oportunidad, McCartney distinguió entre canciones que eran el producto de la inspiración espontánea y otras que, como esta pequeña y amanerada, tenían una génesis más "trabajosa". Esta alegre canción para bailar es liviana sin llegar al cliché, con una secuencia interesante de acordes y ráfagas demoledoras de armónica de Lennon. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

6. Till There Was You

«Till There Was You» es una canción escrita por Meredith Willson para su musical de 1957 The Music Man.

Tuvo un éxito menor en el Reino Unido cuando fue interpretada por Peggy Lee en marzo de 1961. Paul McCartney conoció primero la versión de Peggy Lee y, para cuando versionaron la canción, él desconocía sus origenes en Broadway.

En algunas entrevistas, Lennon y McCartney expresaron el deseo de componer un musical en algún momento, y varias de sus canciones demuestran que ambos compositores entendían el género. Usada en vivo como un breve descanso entre tanto frenesí que dominaba las presentaciones, este cover calmo y sentido del musical de Broadway The Music Man, de 1957, es uno de los momentos más adorables del primer Paul McCartney. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

Fue grabada para la audición con Decca Records, en la que fueron rechazados. Con George Martin a la cabeza y la banda con más confianza decidieron grabarla nuevamente. Cambiaron la guitarra eléctrica por una acústica, lo que hizo que la atmósfera cambiara por completo.

7. Please Mr. Postman

«Please Mr. Postman» es el primer sencillo de The Marvelettes para el sello Tamla, siendo significativo que haya sido la primera canción de Motown en alcanzar la posición n.º 1 en el Billboard Hot 100.

Desde su primer álbum, era evidente la gran admiración de los Beatles hacía la música de bandas femeninas. Please Mr. Postman formaba parte de su repertorio en vivo desde 1961. El grupo grabó tres tomas en un estilo muy similar al de su actuación en la BBC, pero al no encontrar los resultados esperados, alteraron el arreglo para sonar mucho más parecido a la versión original.

Muchas bandas británicas que soñaban con el éxito copiaban el pop americano. Ninguna de ellas se internó en tantos estilos diferentes como los Beatles, que para 1963 habían demostrado ser conocedores del blues, del primer rock de Elvis Presley, de Motown, del doowop y de los girl groups, con sus tirantes armonías. En esta delirantemente acelerada versión de "Please Mr. Postman" de The Marvelettes, Lennon canta la melodía como si él mismo hubiera estado torturándose a la espera del correo. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

8. Roll Over Beethoven

«Roll Over Beethoven» es un conocido éxito de 1956 del cantante y guitarrista Chuck Berry. La letra de la canción trata del deseo de que el rock and roll y el rhythm and blues sustituyan a la música clásica.

La canción está en el lugar n.º 97 de la lista de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos según la revista Rolling Stone.

Según la revista Rolling Stone y el crítico musical Michael «Cub» Koda de Allmusic, Berry escribió la canción en respuesta a su hermana Lucy que siempre utilizaba el piano de la casa para tocar música clásica cuando Berry quería tocar música popular.

Era una de las canciones favoritas de John Lennon, Paul McCartney y George Harrison desde sus inicios como agrupación, y la siguieron tocando en vivo hasta las giras por Estados Unidos de 1964

De los Beatles, Lennon era el más fiel discípulo de Chuck Berry, y el que por lo general cantaba los cover del pionero del rock and roll. Pro en esta atolondrada proclama de Berry de la primacía del rock y el rhytm-and-blues, George Harrison se hizo cargo de la voz. 9. Hold Me Tight

«Hold Me Tight» fue compuesta principalmente por Paul McCartney en 1961, y fue parte de las actuaciones en vivo de The Beatles hasta 1963. La grabaron por primera vez durante las sesiones de Please Please Me, pero no fue incluida.

No me puedo acordar mucho sobre esta canción. Algunas eran tan sólo canciones de 'trabajo', y no sueles guardar después muchos recuerdos sobre ellas. Esta es una de aquellas canciones — Paul McCartney, 1980

(...) "Hold Me Tight" tiene una armonía de voz que recuerda a The Shirelles, y como muchas de las primeras composiciones de los Beatles, una letra dirigida a una persona en particular. 10. You Really Got A Hold on Me

«You've Really Got a Hold on Me» es una canción lanzada en 1962 en un exitoso sencillo de The Miracles, del álbum The Fabulous Miracles. Es de las canciones más famosas del grupo, teniendo millones de ventas e incluida en 1998 en la lista de las galardonadas con el Premio del Salón de la Fama de los Grammy.

Escrita por Smokey Robinson, la canción explora los sentimientos de un hombre tan enamorado de una mujer que no puede dejarla a pesar de que le trate mal.

The Beatles grabaron «You Really Got a Hold on Me» en cuatro ocasiones para la radio de la BBC en 1963. Uno de ellas, del 30 de julio de 1963, fue incluida en la colección de Live at the BBC. Una versión en directo grabada en Estocolmo, Suecia, en octubre de 1963 apareció en 1995 en Anthology 1. La canción fue interpretada una vez más y de una manera más improvisada, en 1969, durante las sesiones de grabación del álbum Let It Be, y que aparece en la película documental de mismo nombre de 1970, Let It Be.

Este cover del hit de Smokey Robinson And The Miracles muestra cuán profundo era el amor de los Beatles por Motown. Lennon canta como si volviera a renovar la fascinación con cada una de las emotivas estrofas de Robinson. 11. I Wanna Be Your Man

En septiembre de 1963, los Rolling Stones estaban buscando material nuevo para grabar, y John y Paul les ofrecieron la canción. A los Rolling Stones les gustó, pero Decca Records les urgía a que sacaran un nuevo sencillo y la canción no estaba acabada. Los dos Beatles se metieron en una habitación aparte en los estudios De Lane Lea y volvieron en poco tiempo con el primer gran éxito para los Rolling Stones.

Al mismo tiempo, los Beatles siempre la pensaron como parte de su próximo disco. Al ser una canción de "relleno" decidieron dársela a Ringo, quién le dió una fuerza y personalidad que nadie más podría haberlo hecho. La canción se volvió habitual en sus atuaciones en vivo debido al ser el -necesario- número vocal de Ringo, lo que ya se había vuelvo habitual por su gran cantidad de fanáticas. Rápidamente se volvió una de las favoritas del público.

Hasta que se hizo evidente que Starr tenía sus propias fans que lo adoraban, dejarlo cantar no figuraba mucho en los planes de los cerebros compositores de los Beatles. De hecho, cuando Lennon recordó que le había dado la canción a los Rolling Stones, dijo: "Las únicas dos versiones de la canción eran la de Ringo y la de los Rolling Stones. Eso muestra cuanta importancia tenía para nosotros". 12. Devil in Her Heart

«Devil in His Heart» fue escrita por el músico Richard P. Drapkin y grabada originalmente por The Donays, grupo no muy reconocido hasta que los Beatles versionaron su canción.

With The Beatles es el primer disco en que el productor George Martin, siempre riguroso en el ámbito vocal, opta fuertemente por las primeras voces grabadas en dos pistas. No es fácil de hacer: el cantante tiene que grabar una idéntica a la primera. Todos los Beatles lo sabían hacer bien, pero en este cover de una canción poco conocida de los Donys, Harrison está increíble. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

13. Not A Second Time

Fue la última canción del álbum acreditada como Lennon-McCartney, aunque fue escrita principalmente por Lennon.

Cuando un periodista serio en el Reino Unido hizo un artículo analizando la profundidad de algunas canciones del dúo, comparo la canción con «Das Lied von der Erde», de Gustav Mahler, expresando que la «cadencia eólica» de la voz de Lennon al llegar la canción a su fin, poseía la misma progresión de acorde aparecía al final de la canción de Mahler. Lennon, años más tarde, comentaría: «Al día de hoy, no tengo ni idea de lo que son las 'cadencias eólicas'. Suena a pájaros exóticos».

La empalagosa sección de piano en medio de esta oda lúgubre muestra el talento de los Beatles para absorber y reutilizar sonidos e ideas fuera del ámbito natural de sus contemporáneos obsesionados por ser modernos. El interludio, interpretado por George Martin, proviene orgullosamente del cancionero de la música easy-listening, bien con la declaración de Lennon de que no volverá a caer en las redes de una amante mentirosa. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

14. Money (That's What I Want)

«Money (That's What I Want)» es un perfecto final para el álbum que rescata los tiempos en Hamburgo de la banda.

Al hacer varios sets en vivo noche tras noche, los Beatles desarrollarn un talento especial para personalizar y reciclar los hits de otros artistas. Harrison recuerda que se topó con la versión original de Barrett Strong mientras revolvía las bateas de la disquería NEMS, propidad del manager Brian Epstein. La banda le dio un toque Marseybeat para incluirla en sus actuaciones en vivo. La canción es el tercer cover de Motown del disco, y tiene un ritmo encadenado, que le ofrece a Lennon la base perfecta para su primera voz, deliciosamente suelta, así com para la armonía en registro alto de McCartney, casi en éxtasis. — Pablo Plotkin (Revista Rolling Stone, 2013)

Lanzamiento

With The Beatles llegó a tener medio millones pedidos anticipados y vendió otro medio millón en septiembre de 1965. De esta manera, logró convertirse en el segundo álbum que vendía un millón de copias en el Reino Unido, solamente superado por la banda sonora original de la película South Pacific (1958). Se mantuvo en la cima de la lista durante veintiún semanas, y desplazó a Please Please Me, de manera que los Beatles ocuparon el primer puesto durante cincuenta y un semanas consecutivas entre los dos álbumes.

Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said Monday he is starting to review the mandate for CBC and its French-language service Radio-Canada, and is looking for ways the government can bolster funding to the public broadcaster so that it can rely less on advertising dollars.

He also hinted the Liberal government's proposed online news bill, currently being studied by a Senate committee, could help.

His mandate letter from the prime minister said the goal of providing more money to the CBC and Radio-Canada is to eliminate advertising during news and other public affairs shows.

This would make the CBC similar to the BBC, which does not broadcast ads on its domestic television channels within the United Kingdom. [...]

Fue un poeta, ensayista, biógrafo, crítico literario y lexicógrafo inglés nacido en Lichfield Staffordshire en septiembre de 1709.

Conocido como el Dr. Johnson, es una de las figuras más notables de Inglaterra y conocido como uno de los mejores críticos literarios en el idioma inglés.

Fue autor del primer diccionario de la lengua inglesa, poseedor de un gran talento y una prosa de estilo inigualable.

Estudió en la universidad de Oxford, la cual abandonó debido a problemas económicos. Trabajó en condiciones difíciles como periodista y traductor en Birmingham y como maestro de escuela en su ciudad natal.

En 1737 se trasladó a Londres en donde comenzó a escribir para una revista literaria. En 1755 tras nueve años de esfuerzo publicó el primer diccionario de la lengua inglesa. El Diccionario de Johnson fue muy importante en su tiempo y hoy en día es aclamado como “uno de los mayores logros de la erudición”.

Escribió numerosos ensayos y críticas literarias a la obra de William Shakespeare.

De carácter brusco, de estatura alta, de complexión robusta y un tanto desarreglado y afectado de tics y de gesticulaciones nerviosas, a veces desconcertaban a los que lo conocían. A raíz de la publicación de su diccionario, se convirtió en una celebridad y le fue concedido el título de Doctor, por parte del Trinity College de Dublín.

Su personalidad contrastaba con su profunda erudición, su brillante conversación y su aparente conservadurismo.

Jamás hizo fortuna, y vivió la mayor parte de su vida en precarias condiciones, fracasó en su intento de ser director de una escuela y fundó su propia escuela en Edial, a las afueras de Lichfield. El colegio fue un fracaso y le costó buena parte de sus ahorros, dedicándose a la escritura.

Como crítico literario, Johnson tuvo una influencia duradera, aunque no todo el mundo lo veía con buenos ojos. Sentó las bases del debate literario en lo concerniente a las figuras de Shakespeare, Milton, Dryden, McPherson y Gray. Durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX la literatura secundaria empezó a ignorar los escritos de Johnson, y no fue que a partir de finales del siglo XIX que su figura como escritor y crítico literario comenzó a revitalizarse.

En el Reino Unido, la figura de Johnson sigue causando profunda admiración, y existen numerosas sociedades formadas en torno a su figura y legado, dedicadas al disfrute de su vida y obra. En 1999, el canal de television BBC Four, puso en marcha el premio Samuel Johnson como galardón de obras de no ficción.

Johnson cuenta con dos museos en el Reino Unido. El principal en su casa natal en Lichfield y alberga numerosos objetos personales, correspondencia y escritos. El segundo museo está en la casa en la que vivió entre 1748 y 1759 en Gough Square en Londres, así también hay un monumento en su honor en la Catedral de San Pablo en Londres.

Small Axe (issue #1) YEAR: 1978 CREATED BY: Ray Hurford LOCATION: London SIZE: A5 WHAT'S INSIDE.... Small Axe was a zine created by Ray Hurford in 1978 with the aim of promoting reggae music, and the first issue features lengthy articles about Gregory Isaacs and Augustus Pablo, as well as reviews of recent releases by Bob Andy, Enos McCloud, Ken Boothe, The Heptones and The Meditations. The Augustus Pablo article raves about the groundbreaking "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown" album (produced by Pablo and engineered by the legendary King Tubby in Tubby’s own studio), which was released in 1976. I can still remember hearing the title track for the first time on John Peel's evening show on BBC Radio 1 all those years ago, and decades later I still use a sample of it as the ringtone on my mobile phone.... Using very basic equipment, Jamaican dub pioneers like King Tubby, Lee Perry, Errol Thompson and others somehow managed to invent the art of remixing by deconstructing existing reggae tracks - stripping out most of the vocals, boosting the bass and drums, applying echo and reverb, bringing individual instruments in and out of the mix and sometimes adding various sound effects on top. These dub “versions” initially just appeared on the B sides of reggae singles - for example, "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown" was originally the B side of a single by Jacob Miller (featuring Augustus Pablo’s Rockers Allstars) and is King Tubby’s masterful remix of the song on the A side, which is called "Baby I Love You So". However, dub soon became a vibrant sub-genre of reggae in its own right, and by turning their mixing desks into instruments, King Tubby and his peers also became artists in their own right. Removing most of the vocals meant that DJs could talk and sing over the B sides of popular tracks – adding their own unique take on the song - which led to the rise of what became known as “toasting”. To say that dub has been a big influence on hip hop, techno, EDM, drum & bass, trip hop, dubstep and other genres of music would be an understatement.... Back in the late 1970s there was also a natural affinity between reggae and punk rock. Bands like The Clash, The Ruts, The Slits and Stiff Little Fingers played reggae covers or incorporated elements of reggae into their sound (with varying success) and when London’s first punk venue, The Roxy, opened in December 1976, house DJ Don Letts mainly played dub and roots reggae records in between band sets. From 1976 onwards, the Rock Against Racism organisation promoted gigs, carnivals and national tours all across the UK that featured punk, post-punk, reggae and ska bands, and brought black and white musicians and fans together with the explicit aim of discouraging young people from embracing racism. Bob Marley even wrote a song called "Punky Reggae Party".... On the other hand, issue #1 of Small Axe also includes some scathing criticism of the BBC for its lack of coverage of reggae. It was very rare to hear reggae - or punk - records during prime time, even though John Peel did play a significant role in popularising both genres. Another source of discontent was that reggae records were mainly sold via specialist shops and often didn't make it into the BBC's official music charts even when they sold more copies than some of the records that did. And as the punk rock explosion inspired the creation of independent record labels, shops and distribution channels, the same became true of many punk, post-punk and indie records.
