So in this verse, Tsunade never ends up teaching Sakura- as that role is fulfilled by Chiyo. (But she DOES return to Konoha eventually).
And Chiyo's first rule (for everything lol) is: Nothing is Free.
Chiyo always demanded something in return for healing, and unlike Tsunade, she considered medical jutsu a part of her arsenal. If it could kill, then it was always an option.
So Sakura learned from that mindset, trading her services and using her rare skillet as a powerful negotiating tactic, especially during Tea Country's civil war. Her healing effectively kept her, Enji, and Saeko in relative safety and provided her a card to play when she needed.
And, while Sakura is nowhere near as jaded as Chiyo is, and often enough of a bleeding heart to help people for damn near free, (a place to stay, food for the night, a new holster for her kunai), she is also VERY pragmatic about her skillset. The civil war taught her that sometimes, letting someone die is better. This puts her at odds with Tsunade, who has a very different mindset (and was, historically, bitter enemies with Chiyo).
Another issue that arises with Tsunade, is that the Godaime is a doctor- while Chiyo is more of a healer. Their understanding of the human body comes from a different place.
Tsunade can name every bone and muscle and perform open-heart surgeries. Sakura can heal bone and stitch back together muscles and flesh on a very basic level, but she's never going to be able to open up a human body and revolutionize medical history like she does in canon. (In canon, Sakura creates a Jutsu that allows her to do a four-man surgery alone; she can't do that here.)
However, she can do some stuff that Tsunade claims is impossible—like reconstructing/altering someone's chakra network, unblocking tenketsu, sometimes turning off someone's dojutsu from a distance, and lite-healing remotely (Tsunade is very upset about this one specifically). A lot of it comes from her mastery of Genjutsu.
Genjutsu, as I reworked in my comic, requires a complete understanding of someone's chakra network to control ALL their senses. Sakura's understanding and control are so prodigious that she can almost autonomously control people's bodily functions (a skillset that is GREATLY aided by training with Chiyo's puppet mastery).
She uses Genjutsu as a tool to understand the body and employs it as both support (helping an ally maintain a sense of gravity as they're pulled underground or flung in the air, etc) and offense.
And that's it for the wall of text! Once again, thank you SO much for the amazingly kind words and all the interest in this AU! <3

So... about the "Ironwood Was Right" thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I recently saw this resurface a bit, in the context of Ruby's regrets in Volume 9. Basically, taking the fact that she felt like she'd failed as the show saying that yes, actually, she was wrong to go against Ironwood's plan in Volume 7.
I feel like I went into thinking about this trying to debunk it on a logical level. Like, is it actually a good idea to fly off into the sky in one big long stalling measure when your opponent is literally immortal? What's stopping Salem from grabbing all the rest of the relics and then just waiting as many generations as it takes, until the people of Atlas forget why they came up there in the first place and return to Remnant out of curiosity?
The thing is, treating it as an argument about what's the more "rational" choice is missing the point that like. We're talking about a story. We don't know exactly how many people are in Atlas and in Mantle and where they are and how many more trips they'd have to take to finish the evacuation, because details like that would just bog things down.
This is not a trolley problem with x number of people from Mantle on one side and y number of people from Atlas on the other. This is a trolley problem with a wealthy and powerful person on one track, and a disadvantaged person an alternate track, and Ironwood choosing to pull the lever instead of trying to stop the trolley. The point is not "how many." It's not about math. The point is that there is a fundamental difference between dying in the central location while a bunch of Huntresses and Huntsmen do absolutely everything in their power to protect you, and dying abandoned in the mines you used to work while the city built off of your labor flies away to safety.
The question this conflict is asking is about whether or not other people can be sacrifices. Ironwood says yes—team RWBY disagree. That's the actual crux of this argument. Does Ironwood have the right to decide who deserves protection and who isn't worth the risk? Do we get to give up on other people before we've even tried to save them? It's about the idea of certain people being disposable. Mantle's wall isn't important, Amity is. Amity will protect all of Atlas, and that wall will only help the people in Mantle. It implies that their safety is an acceptable sacrifice for the greater good. It treats them as disposable.
There's a reason it was Nora who spoke up and pointed out that it's always Mantle being asked to bear the burden for the greater good. Nora has been a disposable person before. Hell, Cinder has been a disposable person! The way Atlas (through the madame) treated a living person as a resource to be exploited or sacrificed is the entire reason that Cinder is trying to burn the kingdom down. Thematically, Atlas cannot escape the danger she poses by sacrificing more disposable people.
One of the biggest themes of this show is cooperation. It's all about how Salem can only be defeated by working together. But working together is not possible if certain people are taking on all of the risk, all of the sacrifice. Everyone has to be willing to put some skin in the game. Like, imagine trying to do a group project if you knew half of you were guaranteed to get an A no matter what and the other half weren't.
So the idea that Volume 9 is supposed to come back around and say that actually, that plan that would have literally divided a city in half and cut loose the poorer half like fucking ballast, that was the right thing all along and Ruby Rose was wrong to challenge it... that would be an absolute disaster of a thematic statement.
This is not a show about hard military men making hard military choices. It's not going to contrive a situation where cold-blooded calculation determines that the right thing to do is to pull up the ladder. Because outside of weird philosophical experiments about trolleys, the right thing to do usually has more to do with empathy. Compassion. Cooperation. All that gay shit.

" just...come here. just sit here with me" (...that one scene from princess momonoke, click for better resolution)
#tw death mentioned for the tag rambles!! (sorry)#meme redraw gone wrong (high effort). don't ask me how i did this- i don't know either. consider this perhaps an AU of the pyre scene?#or more accurately just my internal wonderings visualised. sometimes the vibes from the implications don't pan out the same way#i also lost the original sketch somewhere in my papers. alas. i vaguely recall thinking this would be haha funny and then somewhere down#the line it turned to angst. other quotes that inspired this from the show were 'ily. i'm sorry' and 'i will always be so proud of you'.#smth smth they met on the roof!! vincent stops quincy from jumping off and then. vincent tries to die + eventually quincy kills him on the#very same roof. anyway the quincent death scene was spinning around for a bit in my head and out of the miscellaneous sketches this won out#wanted to play w the strong blue lighting + bg + silhouette things that you get w stage lighting // replaced the knife w vincent's scalpel#quincy is kneeling bc poses + idk why it's fun staging for him ;-; // also the proximity + intimacy.. // the pyre is also in the bg#but it's silhouetted behind quincy. i think the last quincy post made me associate symbolism (help??) bc as i was painting i was thinking o#angel wings ksdjfh // not to mention the halos. halos are always fun to paint.. shiny stuff...#and from the last vincent art. i guess the star and eye imagery carried over. hm. tried to get the quincy halo to match so its like a#rounder less spiky star? which hehe aligns w the sun vibes (that i??can't explain??) but more importantly here i was thinking about#binary stars for the glowy parts. two in orbit in pull to one another.. tension.. ue. also the glow for vincent goes to stabby eye so like#behind the face shown to viewer. meanwhile for quincy it goes in front of the face#and of course u have the downward linking implied line from quincy's tears +scalpel + glowy eye.#this is supposed to be rotatable.. in landscape form u can have either quincy or vincent upright (pov) + it should work both ways#//bonus stuff is vincent holding the skask w bloody hands + shadow looks like blood spatters. like it would if quincy did the stabby.#hhhh this is the most. confused i have been making a piece lately.. just toss in a lot of fun visual stuff and mix..#if the rambling analysis here seems pointless and confused i think that's why. this is why u should plan out your essays o.O..#oh. stuff i just remembered: the whole impetus for vincent planning his own death was so quincy would be happy / it's already#mentioned before quincy kills vincent that he's severely injured- vincent says it's fine- ig u could intepret it as a finishing blow?#hastened over the phaethon announcement- when they make the second announcement quincy looks up smiling until the admin gives it to#beatrix-he didn't know.. // <- so for this it's possible to infer that vincent wasn't very attached to living anymore.. hence why they look#more accepting above. while quincy is looking very angsty and conflicted. yeah.. // tldr! don't look into it too deeply it's a meme redraw#adamandi#quincy cynthius martin#vincent aurelius lin#tw knife

No but the sunbae characters acting in that final sunken place scene (in which he's wearing white). We've seen myungha, many call him the ideal protagonist. One who possesses all the characters you could want in a lead. Now imagine knowing tae myungha irl, being a friend or simply an acquaintance. Seeing how quickly yeowoon and sangwon got attached, it would probably take less than a week of knowing him, to get attached. Then, out of nowhere (from the outside at least, doesn't look like he had anyone to confide in) he passes. You get to know he walked into the sea. Gently and quietly. What kind of insurmountable inexplicable daunting grief would that invoke? Even if there wasn’t much of a ‘relationship’ in the sense of the word, how shaken up would you be? It would be hard to gauge for an outsider. The tremors will course through you, like the silent waves myungha was surrounded by, in his last moments. So, you decide to give him a happy ending. Through writing. Through art. It was that look. Senior's last look and final wish for myungha. To find happiness.
I'm sorry if this was too much cause writing it did make my heart tear itself into pieces as well edit: there was the sound of waves when mh woke in the game world? the bubbles?? i,

Okay, in my Star's Rebirth AU, Kenjaku is technically still alive, but Yuji keeps their brain in a jar (just like the Death Paintings) and for whatever reason, the thought that popped in my head is Yuji telling Shoko about it but it goes like this.
Yuji: I have my mom's brain.
Shoko: What?
Yuji: Kenjaku. Have their brain. *shows a jar he's keep said brain in*
Shoko: ... can I ask why?
Yuji: They kept my brothers in jars, right? As long as they have no body, they can't do anything.
Shoko: Okay. I see your point. Where are you keeping that thing?
Yuji: In my chambers. (Note: just read the AU)
Shoko: Ah. Anyways, why are you telling me this?
Yuji: Wanna study it?
Shoko: ...
Yuji: ...
Shoko: You are a weird kid, but you speak my language.
I can see Yuji slowly getting into that area of science, more so because... well, for one... someone had to be like Kenjaku (they would be proud... probably)! And two, I think that Yuji is "dumb" (by what he believes) because he doesn't learn due to the people who teaches him and how he is being taught. Think about how quickly he learns to use cursed energy. It's a hands on experience for him and the methods use do hold his attention (example, the movie watching and that stuck with him).
Shoko, I think she could hold Yuji's attention because she comes off as someone who uses visuals to teach. I mean, someone had to teach Yuji RCT and honestly? I say it's Shoko.
I think of how Satoru tried to teach Yuji how to use cursed energy the first time. Satoru just went straight into saying "This is cursed energy, this is a cursed technique". And Yuji didn't get it until he used the example of electricity, creating that visual.
It reminds me of how Shoko tried to teach Satoru and Suguru the opposite way about RCT. Moving her hands and making sound effects to recreate a visual for them to understand how RCT works.

the liver thing isn't like a disease or a disorder or anything it's just genetic variance and can go either way. it's that guy who needs 2 paracetamol instead of 1, or that absolute bastard who only has to take half a pill
it becomes a Fucking Annoyance when you're far enough away from the bell curve that shit just doesn't work, or doesn't work enough to warrant taking. it is extra a Fucking Annoyance because you will go your whole life wondering why things simply don't affect you whilst doctors repeatedly either accuse you of lying because they don't know it can be a thing, or go through drug after drug after drug all metabolised the same way and which naturally don't work before giving up.
the fact it's considerably more common in people with chronic pain conditions (for reasons), and people with chronic pain being labelled drug seekers, are probably related.
the fact that ultra-rapid metabolisation on typically the most annoying pathway is most common in people from the middle east and... i think north africa? but very rare in white people (without chronic pain) is also for sure something ain't it (actually it's way more common in painless white people to go the other way and need less drugs. 7-10%. if you were wondering. you weren't)

Conducting a casual poll because why not
In your opinion, which is/are the most iconic Choices quote(s)? Not your favorites, but the ones that are such standouts that they are immediately recognizable to players as long as they've read the book (or even so legendary that they're recognizable regardless)?
