For kid crafts at Dinosaur Weekend at my Trolley Museum, I designed some little standee figures of historical paleontologists from New England. I made it so that they could fit in a little papecraft trolley as passengers.
Here are some brief details about each figure:
Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864) A geologist and president of Amherst College in Massachusetts. Hitchcock was the first person to study the different types of fossil footprints of the Connecticut Valley. Since dinosaurs had not yet been discovered and named, he thought the tracks had been made by giant ancient birds.
Orra White Hitchcock (1796-1863) Wife of Edward Hitchcok. She created many scientific watercolor paintings of flora, geology and other natural subjects of the Connecticut Valley. She also painted numerous illustrations for her husband’s geology lectures and public talks.
Joseph Barratt (1796-1882) A doctor and naturalist from Middletown, Connecticut. He studied many subjects including botany, geology, and Native American languages. He was also interested in the fossil footprints of the Connecticut Valley and gave several good quality specimens to Edward Hitchcock, with whom he was friends.
Mignon Talbot (1869-1950) A geology and geography professor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She regularly collected fossils, minerals and other specimens for the College’s Geology Department. She also discovered the bones of Massachusetts’ state dinosaur, Podokesaurus.
