Decided I wanted to try buying the Beyblade manga. Saw how expensive it was how rare the volumes are and now… I want to give up. Yikes.

How to Enchant Your Tarot Decks
This spell was originally intended for traveling fortunetellers who often came across thieves and other villainous strangers.
1) Wait for the witching hour on the same day as when you were born.
If you were born a Wednesday, perform this spell on a Wednesday.
The chanting must begin at exactly three o’ clock in the morning. Prepare everything else before then.
2) Place all your tarot decks on a glass, wooden or metal table.
They must “stand at attention”.
Make sure they are enclosed in the container they came with when you first touched them, whether that is their original cardboard box, a wooden box or a velvet pouch.
3) Knock on each tarot deck three times to awaken it.
Do it for all of them, one after the other.
Do it forcefully enough that you hear a thud with every knock you make. It is important that an audible sound is made.
4) Chant this incantation three times to weaponize your decks.
“Asmot. Deo. Vir. Birtir. Ligete in omnibus membris tujs quia te corumpere volo.”
This orison must be memorized beforehand. It cannot be written down to be read. And one cannot stumble upon the words.
It must be pronounced correctly for it to work. Speak it phonetically, saying it exactly as it is spelled. As Spanish is today’s most widespread phonetic language, you may consult a Spanish speaker for guidance.
5) Shuffle every one of your decks to lock in the spell.
Take them out of their container, and shuffle them once before putting them back inside.
Store them together in a drawer or a shelf.
For the next two weeks, perform the spell again. On the coming Wednesday, and on the one after that, always at exactly three o’ clock. Only then will the magic be potent enough.
Anyone with a pinch of malice against you who touches your cards or their container will suffer a bout of illness no medicine can cure.

Tag Game: 9 Favorite Characters
I was tagged by @anyboli, @asha-mage, and @spectrum-color (Stop! stop! I’m already tagged!)
Aladdin (Disney’s Aladdin)
Tumblr media
This is definitely where my love of the rogue-with-a-heart-of-gold archetype started. Lay the blame squarely at his bare feet. I watched all the sequels including the direct-to-VHS Aladdin and the King of Thieves.
2. Mat Cauthon (the Wheel of Time series)
Tumblr media
He’s 12 different literary/historical/mythological references slapped together, chained to a lovable rogue archetype, rolled in accessories, doused in foreshadowing, and given #vampireproblems. He probably has ADHD and dyslexia and definitely has anxiety. I’m obsessed with him and I have the essays to prove it.
3. Fortuona Athaem Devi Paendrag (the Wheel of Time series)
Tumblr media
Liking Mat is the gateway drug to liking Tuon, at least in my case. She’s so fucking weird and mysterious and infuriating and I really wanted to understand her and her role in the story. Then I wanted to figure out how to fix her. Now I still want all that but also I want to make her worse, make her make other people worse, and just generally Put Her In Situations. She is endlessly fascinating to me and I want to chew on her until I rip out her squeaker. Then I will put in another squeaker and the process will begin again. My username, originally chosen because somebody else snagged matrimonycauthon, has very appropriately become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
4. Ael i'Mhessian t'Rllalielu (the Rihannsu series)
Tumblr media
No one should be surprised that I love Diane Duane’s take on the Romulans, and Ael is the archetypal honorable Romulan type that Star Trek originally introduced. As the aunt of the Romulan Commander in the Enterprise Incident (the Federation steals technology from the Romulans) she has good reasons to hate Captain Kirk and the Federation personally- but as the tagline says, when there is no help from her friends, she turns to her enemies. She’s the star of the Rihannsu Star Trek novels: start with either My Enemy, My Ally for the first book or the omnibus Rihannsu: The Bloodwing Voyages.
5. Tertius Lydgate (Middlemarch)
Tumblr media
I was trying to sum up what I like about him and I think it’s something about the quiet tragedy of good intentions and ambition getting banally corrupted by unquestioned systems, practical considerations, and bad but personally inevitable choices. If you’ve ever worked in nonprofits or a b-corp, you may recognize yourself in Lydgate in a way that will make you uncomfortable. Or maybe it’s just me? Anyway, go read Middlemarch. It is always the right time in your life to read Middlemarch.
6. Tau-Indi Bosoka (The Masquerade series)
Tumblr media
I’m love them! Tau-Indi is such a sweet person, and they follow a favorite character arc of mine: characters whose assigned or chosen role is to be the best representative & highest expression of their specific ethical and political milieu, and then they experience or learn something that forever disqualifies them from their former role, and then they have to keep on existing and build their sense of morality and place in the world from the ground up, on firmer foundations than the ones they started with. Also an excellent foil to Baru.
7. Miriam Beckstein (the Merchant Princes series)
Tumblr media
Merchant Princes is basically an isekai story where a biotech journalist finds out she’s a long-lost heir to a group of alternate-universe-teleporting refugees. It’s not actually very fun for her at first, but she’s making it work. I love competence porn and she definitely delivers, and there’s also a very sweet slow-burn romance tied up with her funding and leading the socialist revolution of yet another alternate universe.
8. Glimmer (new She-Ra)
Tumblr media
Glimmer? She’s just my bisexual teleporting deeply morally questionable power fantasy, it’s not that deep. Also she’s hot and I love her hair.
9. Mark Pierre Vorkosigan (Vorkosigan series)
Tumblr media
What an incredible foil! Every time I read him I’m so impressed by how fucked up he is and how hard he’s working to figure out who he is and develop in a direction he chooses. Control issues, daddy issues, sexuality issues, identity issues… he’s an entire wall of magazines and I think he’s just great.
Tagging: @unmarkedcards @veliseraptor @ameliarating @gunkreads @liesmyth and anyone else who wants to do it

Ok hi dgs trial 3 part 2
Megundal is constantly doing the 🤨 emoji its killing me....
AND HE SAID QUARE 😭😭 SOBBBB oh I feel like every time this man opens his mouth I'm going to take psychic damage because all I can hear is my father
Also I cant be having conversations in this antechamber all I can think of is the 'losing lawyer has to suck off their opponent' fic
EEJIT 😭 he sounds like he came from a roddy doyle book I read as a child
Ok actually itd b more expedient to just name every piece of Irish slang megundal says that makes me die so thatll be at the end of the post
I chose the 'ja you're guilty' option n ryuu autist... call a spade a spade he does indeed
Man 'the reaper of the old bailey' is such a cool concept but it sucks that the only thing I know abt bvz is 'racist' and 'sucks off ryuu after losing court cases'. Yeah that's right I've had mid-post character development. I've decided that the thing about losing lawyers blowing each other after trials is canon
Also I hate megundal's hat it annoys me. Couldnt he just have been short
The thing abt going into the trial knowing fuck all is fun tho. Very the lost turnabout
Also I do like the idea of 'I don't even know if the client is guilty or not, dont even know anything about the case, but everyone deserves a defense' too bad iirc that doesnt reach its logical conclusion of 'even people you know to be guilty are worth defending' given the whole combatative relationship between defense and prosecution these games have going on. And like obvi I get why its always the prosecution ceding the defense's arguments but it does get to feel a bit lopsided despite all the nattering abt working together to find the truth
OMG ITS JUROR 3 FROM TUMBLR POSTS WHO HATES THE POLICE AND RICH PEOPLE!!!! Its like meeting a celebrity....
Not bvz with the vampire cloak opening sprite 😭😭😭😭
Also. Bvz 🤝 saïx. Bigoted antagonists who turn good at the end of the story who have the same scar
'Is it not the British way to be chivalrous and kind and give opportunities to foreigners at expense to yourself' megundal you're Irish you cannot be serious. Istg this fucking accent will be the death of me I cannot imagine him as saying anything to that effect and entirely believing it even tho logically I know there were Irish 'I got mine' gobshites... (autism symptom bullet point that reads 'difficulty comprehending different perspectives' appears over my head)
Oh that's right the jury thing... this is awesome
Also regrettably I have to say that bvz is hot. If he was a woman and not racist? Awooga. However he has to get there first before I get him any leeway
Also I've just realised that 'zieks' is probs pronounced more like 'zeeks' than 'zikes'. Huh that's gonna be difficult to adjust to
Also I like juror 4.... typing :)
Also I wanna do voices reading out all the dialogue but that means I have to find like 8 distinct British voices. Bvz is a brummy now
. Why is it the Phoenix wright omnibus
Oh the stained glass eye things before the cross examination are really cool
See my main quibble rn is that the skylight is only clearly visible from one angle when sitting on top of the omnibus, so unless both were sitting together on the same bench for some reason despite seeming perfect strangers, both couldnt have seen it
'I dont like blades' 'then why do you have that katana' 'that's not a blade that's asougis soul' wahhh...
Bvz's wine makes an appearance... love his little scythe wine bottle
BOOO DONT COMMENT ON THE DISPOSITION OF WOMEN FROM THE EAST AGAIN OR I KILL U DEAD !!!
Also I continue to enjoy ryuu's eyeliner
love ryuu pushing up his armband after leaving his sweaty sprite... nice little detail
Omg ryuu pacing once he puts this together ... yesss walk little gayboy
Why did they give juror 3 a sprite where hes licking the knife. Dont like that
Oh boo bvz took off his cloak... he looks less cool now
Omg perjury is a thing in this game you love to see it
Also can we get beppo a blanket or something
Halp me 'could he have just happened to see the exact moment the crime was committed? Some days are just like that'... ryuu pls tell us abt yr day to day
Fairplay keeps eating his cane... boy get some chewlery
I do like that juror 3 getting his knife stuck in the bench is worked into the dialogue. Even the people reading the transcript know that you're shit at knife wielding
Omg ryuu drew the little diagram of the view from the omnibus? That's so cute... artist man
Love it when they object back and forth... fuck yes the girls are fighting
Also it mihjt jusr have been a while since I've aced my attorneys but I feel like the witnesses jn this game are a lot more deliberately deceitful and guilty of other crimes and it's awesome. Yes boy withhold information for malicious reasons
Omg Gina? Is it Gina time?
GINAAAAAAAA YES I SEE HER!!!!!! HIIIII HI GINA!!!!!!!
DONT JUST OUT GINA AS A PICKPOCKET U LITTLE FUCK! could've just said she was a beggar or something
Omg Gina dialogue and theme yayyyyy love her... I enjoy her slight :3 mouth
MEGUNDAL LIST
Also this cockney transliteration is awful
Small detail but I love how Gina is introduce as 15 but the court record says shes 17. Yes girl lie about your age for fun and profit
BVZ LEGSLAM!!
Also 'iron-heeled Wellington' please dear God tell me this man is not wearing metal wellies
Omg the evidence suddenly changing midtrial....yessss that's so awesome
Accidentally pressed twice on one of Gina's statements and only the second time does megundal have anything to say on it.... huh
OPEN AND FAIR COMPETITION IS WHAT A CAPITALIST SOCIETY IS ALL ABOUTTHHWNWJWJAKWQJNQAKKA
Arrived at the first thing that's proper stumped me :( accusing fairplay and furst... girl what do u present I dont wanna have to turn on story mode
Ok I had to look up a walkthru before I realised u had to examine the skylight from the interior... eye see
RYUU TURNING THE LEARNED FRIEND NAME ON BVZ YES GET HIM
Oh this music as we close the trial and ryuu fruitlessly objects is banging
Also as much as hes a lying rich cunt I do like megundal I think his influence over the trial is rlly interesting
WEVE UPGRADED TO FIREWORKS UPON A NOT GUILTYY???? THAT CANT BE OSHA APPROVED (osha does not exist yet)
'Gina really does take forever to load that gun' I AAS THINKING THR SAMS THING.... ryuu you're a man of the people
IRIIIIIIIIIIIS IRIS IRIS IRIS IRIS IRIS IRIS IRIS SHES HEEEEERE IRIS IRIS IRIS! AW HER THEME IS SO CUTE
HELP ME SUSATO HAS A PLEADING EMOJI SPRITE???? NDNSKWKQOQ I HAD NOT SEEN THIS BEFORE
GREGSON SPOTTED
Also the burning carriage... eyes emojiiiii that was cool... magundal you daft cunt
That was a fun case and rlly interesting.... it's taking a while to get the pieces together for the status quo but they're keeping things interesting while they set it up so I dont mind as much
I'll try for the fourth case tomorrow but according to the longplay I've been basing my guesstimates off of, it's long as shit and I have a 2 hour driving lesson in the middle of the day... might try wake super early or something and get done the first section and then marathon it noon til night. The last trial is for sure gonna take me two days, rlly hope mam's fine with taking me back to the city on Sunday instead of Saturday
Chancer
Blackguard (still fucks me to know its spelt like that and not blaggard)

Book Review: Stephen McCranie's Space Boy Omnibus, Volume 3 (2022)
Tumblr media
(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Edelweiss. Minor/vague spoilers ahead.)
I've been an on-and-off reader of Stephen McCranie's Space Boy for a few years now. Though the single episodes are available for free on Webtoon, I tend to wait for the collected editions. Never mind that these are a few years behind the strip and contravene my impatience when it comes to waiting for new installments of my favorite media. Idk, blame the poor wifi in my house (Webtoon is slow af on my iPad).
The third SPACE BOY omnibus - which collects Volumes 7 though 9 of the trade paperbacks - finally reveals Oliver's BIG SECRET, which I won't divulge here. Suffice to say, Amy's suspicions and persistence finally pay off in a reveal of epic proportions. So many mysterious threads come together to form a narrative that's both satisfying and compelling.
Volume 7 - 3.5/5 stars
When Amy discovers that Dr. Kim and Oliver are moving out of Kokomo - hastily, with little warning, and seemingly with a military escort - she borrows Tammie's drone to spy on them. The drone is shot down, but not before Amy spots a cybernetic man in Dr. Kim's dungeon basement. (The plot thickens!) Weirder still, that night she dreams of an alien being with a purported connection to Oliver.
Oh, and she finally shoots down poor Zeph. And it's still Spirit Week!
Volume 8 - 4/5 stars
The military, led by the increasingly erratic Commander Saito, puts a hit out on Amy, who they've mistakenly identified as a spy. We learn that Oliver is their connection to the Artifact and thus instrumental to the First Contact Project.
Volume 9 - 4/5 stars
Saito's story line wraps up, and then we're treated to a flashback of the Arno six years ago, not long before its fateful accident in the Aquarii Beta system. The volume ends with a few super-cute Little Amy strips, for both balance and levity.
As always, the art in SPACE BOY is lovely, with an almost disconcerting juxtaposition of adorable (the people and nonhuman animals; the many Jetson-esque space gadgets) and bleak (the cold Nothing of space). The narrative is still moving at the speed of molasses (did I mention that it's still Spirit Week!?), though the story gets super interesting in Volume 8, once Oliver's past/present/future is finally revealed. (If you're sticking with SPACE BOY for the scifi elements, you will LOVE Volumes 8-9.)
Continuing with my habit of critiquing the speciesism in this series - Amy enjoys a lobster dinner with nary a mention of her so-called vegetarianism, so I guess the Agricultural Club hasn't started raising baby lobsters yet, either.

86/120
I picked this one on my own, I felt like reading a horror book and I heard bout this one on TikTok and saw it was on KU. So I grabbed it.
Overall: 4/5
The Moving House: 3/5
Ghostland: 5/5
Afterlife: 4/5
Infinite: 3/5
Tumblr media
When I was doing the tags- I just noticed this is written by the same author as Woom. I was able to grab the Ghost Hunter Omnibus edition off of KU, so I did get to read the prequel and the main trilogy all in one. It also has pictures. I had meant to start The Fireman, but I found myself gravitating towards this instead.
The writing is third person, but I didn’t find it odd or out of place. The writing style was really good. It was different from Woom, I felt like it was more put together and fine tuned. Even though I enjoyed it overall, I did have to struggle though it because I just couldn’t get immersed into it,
As someone who plays video games, I really did enjoy the little references to them as they popped up. Not many of them did but they were very well thought out and placed. And while I would say that this author is very knowledgeable in the paranormal world as evidenced by the Guide to Ghost Hunting that is included- I would say that they most likely just researched and moved on. They did reference the Dybbuk box, which has been disputed and said to be a hoax even as a very controversial topic. Though I don’t have much of a problem as I only had found one small, insignificant reference to it. (Just wanted to mention it as the topic has been sensitive to some audiences).
The reason the prequel got a rating of 3. I found it clunky and too short for any type of attachment to anyone. It did serve as an introduction, but the length needed to be a bit longer if it was supposed to help build up the series. It should have just been included in the first book instead of being separate.

The Great Ace Attorney Playthrough: The Adventure of the Runaway Room (Part 1b)
Last time: We (and by we I mean Ryunosuke and Susato) arrived in England, and were almost immediately sent to play lawyer by Daemon Gant’s ancestor, who is definitely going to either die or kill someone later. Despite our client being only the richest of able bodied white men, we quickly found ourselves on the ropes thanks to the worlds least impartial jury. Fortunately we now get to put the buggers on the spot and demand they give us their reasons for convicting my client (and boy had they better be good).
Tumblr media
Ryunosuke, the more we learn about that man the more of a cad he becomes. I say we should be very thankful we aren’t doing that.
Tumblr media
Let me get this straight, instead of smashing their half baked ideas to smithereens and laughing as I go, I have to use the worlds weakest bricks to build my argument.
Tumblr media
Susato, one of them knows one of the witnesses.
Tumblr media
Oh, so that’s what we’re doing.
Ok, Ryunosuke, lets get shit stirring!
Tumblr media
Well firstly, either the drunk juror’s wrong or Beppo’s overcharging people, so jot that down.
Tumblr media
Ooh, we’re pacing!
(Also, I’d like to thank Juror No.4 for backing me up, ma’am you are the only member of this group bothering to make even the slightest bit of effort. For this I thank you.)
Tumblr media
Of course! Thank you for putting two and two together like that for me!
(Wait a second, I’ve just realized that we’ve got the KBS slung on our hip! That’s amazing!)
Tumblr media
And this lady’s and gentleman, is why we don’t let people who know those involved stand on the Jury.
Tumblr media
GET HIS ASS JUROR NO.4!
(You are my favourite juror, you can tell the others if you’d like.)
Tumblr media
Excellent work Ryunosuke!
Tumblr media
Have you not even been listening?
(Susato is explaining the last ten minutes to him because she has more patience than I ever will.)
Tumblr media
>:D
And Juror No.2’s crossed over to our side as well!
Tumblr media
>:D
And she’s doing it for much better reasons than Juror No.5!
Juror No.2 you’re winning me back!
Just two more jurors to convince now, so let’s go on to the discrepancy about how the victim was stabbed, and maybe point out that the body was left in the seat it was stabbed it.
Tumblr media
Old Lady vs Jack the Ripper, here we go!
(Ten guineas on the granny!)
Tumblr media
Haha! His knife got stuck in the table!
Tumblr media
(I put it again that this man should have that knife taken away from him.)
Tumblr media
Yes judge, and if we’d been allowed to go through the whole trial before the jurors jumped the gun, you’d have known that already.
Tumblr media
Yay! We’ve won Granny Thickle back!
Tumblr media
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE JURY IS SUPPOSED TO DO YOU NINCOMPOOP?!?
And he’s being really racist now.
Fortunately he’s also rubbing the rest of the jury up the wrong way!
Tumblr media
Well I consider this to have been a success Ryunosuke.
Tumblr media
Well given that the body was found on the seat and there was no blood on the floor... I’m going to say no.
He wants evidence.
Ok then.
As a wise man with a cool sword once said: I will shove it down your throat and make you choke on it.
(Yeah, we should really have seen Kazuma’s moral dubiousness coming...)
Anyways, let’s show him the crime scene photo then.
WRONG???
Of course! The autopsy report shows he was only stabbed once!!!
Meaning that there was only one incident where the witness was stabbed!
Tumblr media
VICTORY VICTORY VICTORY!!!
YEAH!!!
Tumblr media
Yes, kill each other!
Tumblr media
My Lord, Juror No.3 has started licking his knife and threatening the witnesses now...
I’m a little bummed we didn’t get to convince Juror No.4 seeing as she’s the one putting in the hours up there, but never mind. We’re back on track baby!
Tumblr media
HE CRUSHED IT!
Tumblr media
Oh my god Ryunosuke, we’ve got a prosecution shut up button!
Tumblr media
HE THREW OF HIS DRACULA CLOAK!
Tumblr media
Oh please, we all know perjury doesn’t exist in this here!
Oho, so apparently Beppo’s been overcharging his customers. Given the conditions he’s been working in I can’t exactly blame him though.
Unfortunately that does kind of rule out the possibility of an extra passenger though, so I’m not sure it helped us much.
Tumblr media
Damn right I do!
‘Absolutely’ Ryunosuke and I share one mind.
Now let’s see if we can clear up that whole ‘I saw the victim stabbed on the floor’ bs.
Tumblr media
You know, I’m rapidly warming to Mr Furst. Unlike the other witnesses and the god damn jury, he’s not telling lies, or overinflated by his own self importance. He’s actually taking it seriously and doing his best to be as clear and close to factual as he can.
I mean he could well be the killer for all I know, but right now I’m just enjoying him as a nice gentle guy who’s trying his best. It’s refreshing.
Barok’s trying to point out that we still have one witness who saw the stabbing, to which I say: Yeah, a witness with a reason to lie!
Still, Beppo’s the one I should probably be focusing on here, as he’s saying he saw the victim stabbed in places he couldn’t have been.
Tumblr media
Well that was easy.
Mr Fairplay on the other hand is going absolutely ham on his cane.
What’s the matter Mr Fairplay?
Got something to say?
Tumblr media
Again Mr Fairplay, being a banker in an Ace Attorney Game is not the commending statement you think it is.
Anyways new statement time!
And what’s this I see? Both his hands were covered in blood? That looks like a new contradiction to me!
Tumblr media
You know he’s weirdly insistent about this, and I can’t work out why?
Like, regardless of whether or not he committed the murder, he’s clearly hoping that Mr McGilded’s going to be taken out of the picture as a result.
But if he wants that to happen then this is such a weird thing to lie about. It doesn’t add in any way to Mr McGilded’s ‘guilt’, in fact thanks to his gloves it kind of does the opposite.
But if he’s not lying then he has to be mistaken and I don’t understand what that would mean either.
Tumblr media
Wow, Juror No.6 is ready to throw down!
(Juror No.3’s going off as well, but I don’t think that’s anything to write home about.)
Tumblr media
NOT IN THE WAY HE REPEATEDLY SAID IT WAS!
Tumblr media
I’m no longer so sure. After all, if he was it would be far more in his interest to keep quiet about it or say he was mistaken as soon as we bought the gloves out.
What I’m beginning to wonder though, is if there was a mysterious fifth passenger after all, and their hands were the ones Mr Fairplay saw covered in blood.
Come to think of it, he did say that he didn’t see the victim or killers faces, so that’s a good chance, and one that actually gives some hint as to what our suspect looks like: i.e. small.
Tumblr media
Debt time.
Tumblr media
IT’S A HUGE DEBT!!!
Tumblr media
Good to get proper conformation on that theory then.
Tumblr media
ORDAAR!
(If you don’t know about the House of Commons cry of Order you should look it up on YouTube. It’s basically the one good thing to have come out of that place.)
So he did lie about seeing the moment the victim was stabbed then. I guess that leave more room for the idea that the fifth passenger did it.
Actually, come to think of it did Mr McGilded ever tell us where he went to sit in the carriage? Could he have been on the open side, the one Mr Fairplay and Mr Furst couldn’t see from where they were?
Tumblr media
Huh, he’s still doubling down.
Again I really don’t think he’s lying here, but I do think he’s mistaken about who’s hands he could see.
Also given how much this statement relies on him being a witness I should probably rule him out of my enquires.
I’m rapidly going back over my notes to see if I ever accused him, but let’s be honest here I did. The False Accusations counter is up to a nice healthy 5/5.
Tumblr media
Of course Mr Furst, you’re an angle and we’re all thrilled you’re here.
Tumblr media
Ok, well now any doubts I had that Mr Fairplay was telling the truth have been put to rest, thank you Mr Furst. You, me and Susato should form our own breakaway courtroom, Juror No.4 can come if she likes.
Anyway time for more testimony.
Tumblr media
Certainly looks that way doesn’t it My Lord?
Now Barok want’s to examine the Omnibus again.
You know what, sure Barok, knock yourself out.
Tumblr media
Barok, keep up. It literally a huge contradiction sitting right there.
Tumblr media
YES IT MATTERS!!!
Well thanks to Mr Furst, the one good witness, we know that the real killer wasn’t wearing any gloves. Again Mr Furst I thank you.
Wait a second, there was a space under the seat opposite the victim wasn’t there. I know it was full of stuff but was there any room for someone to fit themselves?
Barok’s telling me that there was no trace of blood on Mr McGilded’s actual hands. I’m glad you’ve finally caught up Barok but stop talking now so I can examine the omnibus again.
Tumblr media
Yes! A space!
And whoever it was who could fit inside there definitely fits the category of small!
Tumblr media
And right on cue it’s time to bring their blind spot to light.
Now, I need to work out if they want to know about the space under the seats or if they just want the seats themselves, because from where Mr Furst and Mr Fairplay were sitting they couldn’t see either.
Fuck it, I’ll just put my cursor half way between the two and hopefully it’ll except whichever one it wants.
Tumblr media
Haha, yes... exactly what I was going to say...
Tumblr media
MY EVIDENCE IS THE FUCKING BLOODIED GLOVES!!!
Anyways, given that the killer was by all accounts sitting next to the victim with no gloves and bloodied hands, the only person who could have been in the concealed seat was Mr McGilded. Again, did anyone actually bother to check which seat he sat in?
Tumblr media
Well done Judge. Still as sharp as ever I see.
Tumblr media
Wow, that one hit the light!
Barok, that’s alcohol. If you start a fire in here I’m not going to put you out.
Oh he’s being racist again.
Tumblr media
Racist stuff Ryunosuke.
Tumblr media
Ok, well let me brake this down into words that a stuck up prick like you would understand. The witnesses never saw the attackers face, but they did see his hands and all agree that they were covered in blood. My clients hands were not covered in blood, and therefor he doesn’t fit the one thing we know about the killer. However we know he was on the omnibus, and the only place he could have been is in the seat that can’t be seen.
Tumblr media
... you guys, I think this man might be the OG “protégé” prosecutor. Hugh O’Connor and Sebastian Debeste were simply trending in this mans footsteps.
Tumblr media
I’m not really sure how much clearer you want me to be My Lord!
(Also ORDAAAAR!)
Van Zieks is still crawling blindly towards the light, and I suggest we just move on without him.
I know (or at least I hope) he’s just deliberately putting up barriers as the prosecution, but the way he’s doing it really looks like he’s packing his intelligence onto a bus and sending it out to destinations unknown.
(Credit to Ryunosuke for spelling it out for him though.)
Tumblr media
Thank you Mr Furst, I knew you’d have my back.
Tumblr media
THEN LET’S BRING HIM INTO COURT!!!
(ORDAAARR!!!)
Tumblr media
Yeah on what grounds?
I mean this is literally the solution to all our problems.
Tumblr media
Yeah, well he probably lied (though I can’t work out why).
Tumblr media
Excellent point Ryunosuke!
Now Van Zieks is pointing out that if Mr McGilded lied in his statement there would have been a deliberate reason for doing so. To be honest, as the prosecution, this seems like all the more reason to bring him in.
Anyway we’re demanding his testimony.
Tumblr media
WHY THE HELL ARE WE ASKING THEM?!?
Well luckily for us the jury seems to finally be getting its arse in gear and has agreed (fairly unanimously) to let the god damn defendant make a statement in his own murder trial.
Tumblr media
Nothing to say here. This just feels like a meme.
Tumblr media
HAHA!!! THERE WAS SOMEONE!!!
EAT MY SHIT BAROK!!!
Tumblr media
Wait an urchin?
Ace Attorney, I’ve already had a ‘don’t feel good’ case regarding who I’m accusing, don’t make me do that again.
STOP MAKING ME ACCUSE POOR AND FRIGHTENED CHILDREN!
Tumblr media
Yeah, they probably would have done, and unlike you I don’t think she’d have been able to pull the ‘I donated a park to this city you know’ trick to win hearts and minds.
I wonder if she was there as a passenger or as a stowaway? Because I’d say that gap under the seat could fit a child pretty easily.
Now Barok’s saying we have no reason to believe Mr McGilded. And he’s right except for, you know, all the evidence...
Tumblr media
Wait what.
Tumblr media
A smoke bomb just went off!
I really don’t like the face Mr McGilded pulled just then, and he definitely gave a signal for it to be dropped.
...Ah fuck, he’s guilty isn’t he.
And he’s using some kid to cover it up.
Well shit...

Thoughts on (the apparently rushed) DC solicits?
Yeah, apparently Diamond used to put them together and now it's just some guy in the DC offices, hence why they've been screwy since the changeover.
Tumblr media
I Am Batman #1: "In the throes of Future State" just means those events coming about rather than this being set in the future, right? My impression is this is very much in the here-and-now, and I think this is gonna be really enjoyable with no more teasing out aspects of the premise and Coipel steadily on art. Killer title too. You're really gonna open this with the 'Anti-Oracle' though?
Batman #112-113: Glad to see Brandon Thomas but already miss the Ghostmaker backup.
Batman: Urban Legends #7: THE BOYS ARE BACK
Batman--Knightwatch: Bat-Tech Special Edition: I'm...not clear what this is?
Deathstroke Inc. #1: lol
Aquaman: The Becoming #1: shit I'm gonna like an Aquaman comic, and about a character who debuted on Young Justice no less, this sucks
Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang. Kill Tour #1: Zero interest but glad to see Max Sarin getting work.
Suicide Squad: King Shark #1: Ditto except replace Max Sarin with the Defacer.
Are You Afraid of Darkseid? #1: This one's a maybe.
Tumblr media
Action Comics #1035: Excited for this, especially with the fairly long-teased 'event' arc with Janin starting in the next issue, but I can't help but laugh looking at that cover because it absolutely looks like Superman's doing a Brandon Routh to his poor family.
Batman '89 #2: Ah, so this and '78 are still miniseries, somehow missed that before.
Batman: Reptilian #4: The preview for the first issue was definitely not what I expected coming from Ennis's interview; I'm curious how he'll square apparently doing the "Punisher MAX but it's Batman" approach so many people will want with the comedy he inherently sees in the character and his world.
Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #4: I had thought I was probably out but dammit if you're bringing the Gray Ghost in you've got my attention.
Batman/Superman #22: This is ending to be relaunched to focus on Jace and Jon, right? Between it doing steadily sales-wise and the acclaim I can't fathom a reason to dump Yang the same month King Shark is getting a mini.
(My worst fear is that DC floated this as a test - put a dynamite creative team on their two biggest characters, but without any sense of 'importance', and see how much readers gravitate towards it relative to crap that's central to the sacred Continuity - and feels it got an answer.)
Hardware: Season One #2: Probably still getting this.
Infinite Frontier #6: Hate when I'm made the new de facto head of the DCU and people are so unenthused about the prospect of this that the solicit for the last issue of my event mini isn't even listed at the front among the 'big' books of the month, when the first issue hasn't even hit the stands yet.
Justice League #68: This is where Jon joins, right? Conceivably even Jace/Yara/Kaldur, though I think that full changeover will be the marker of the next 'proper' relaunch.
Tumblr media
Justice League Infinity #3: Moraaaaa. The premise of 'what if the Justice League cartoon did all the cool stuff?' loses something when it isn't actually the cartoon anymore - we're already used to seeing the cool stuff in this format - but I'm not gonna turn down good Justice League comics.
Legends of the Dark Knight #5: Cool, I'll get this.
Mister Miracle: The Source of Freedom #5: Orion still looks like that?
Rorschach #12: Hurm.
RWBY/Justice League #6: I guess any plans to sell Rooster Teeth would be on hold what with the move from AT&T to Discovery, so hopefully the chances of a more character-driven sequel aren't 100% dashed.
Strange Adventures #12: So goddamn nervous until the very last moment it's gonna turn out to be "it was his wife all along!"
Tumblr media
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #4: God, what a cover.
Superman '78 #2: Looking forward to seeing that Hitch variant, and Hackman's Luthor should be fun in this context.
Superman and The Authority #4: Right up to the end the solicits for this sound like an event lead-in mini circa 2007 or so except it's Grant Morrison so what is it really??? AND WHY NO QUITELY VARIANT
Superman: Son of Kal-El #3: I don't trust Taylor to do the ideal possible version of 'Jon Kent becomes a leftist in college' but the basic setup of this status quo is great and I think he'll do a fun version of it that's going to satisfy a lot of people.
The Batman & Scooby Doo Mysteries #6: That's MY Scooby-Doo, y'all!
A Nice House On The Lake #4: WHAT SECRET COULD BE MORE TERRIFYING THAN ANYTHING IN THAT FIRST ISSUE
Wonder Woman: Black and Gold #4: God, Lotay.
Batgirl of Burnside Omnibus: I get why this is a collection that basically had to happen but that's not a new cover by Stewart, is that? Somebody please tell me that's something repurposed and they didn't give him new work.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus vol. 2 Reviews (SPOILERS!!!)
A Stake to the Heart
Act 1: Deceit Another layer of Buffy's pre-Sunnydale life, which I utterly adore finding out about. Back to original illustrations, Buffy looks absolutely stunning. Wow we have a cold open to Buffy's parents' separation, very accurately dimming their voices, because kids rarely hear anything besides ''our family is falling apart'' (''The words blur together.''). Ahahaha Buffy almost stakes Dawn and then the little monster of a sister FINALLY gets that everything she'd previously read in Buffy's diary was reality. Whistler raises an excellent point and it almost makes me tolerate him – Buffy being a few centuries too young for Angel. Aaaaaaand! Giles complains about the sunny weather in Sunnydale ahaha! I love everything Giles does. Librarians being smart and ridiculously hot, of course. And some of them have vampire calendars on their walls. LoL, Rupert! This weird-looking demon (''a malignancy spirit'') follows Buffy around, talking about her dad, filling her head with all sorts of bad and heavy imagery, until she eventually sees Hank with some woman – I really love the metaphor for emotions here since I've been through the whole parents separating, dad leaving thing. Act 2: Guilt I really love the creepy imagery that depicts the Summers' sadness and guilt, because that sh** really follows you around like a demon. Also, the parallel to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is quite brilliant here. Principal Fluuuuuutiiiiie! What a guy. What a soon-to-be-eaten-by-hyenas guy! Cordy and Harmony sighting! Cordy being witty as ever. God, I love Cordy!! Oh, and something else: Jesse is here and I'm really glad we get to see him... well, anywhere, since he was apparently a big part of the pilot Scoobies but they never mention him again after being turned and staked. Things get really ugly in this act and some of the best horror elements are on display here. This issue may be my favorite of all. Oh, and Dawn disappears for a moment. Just a moment, though. Act 3: Abandonment Well, this is another depressing entry with Buffy and Dawn lamenting their parents' divorce and the demon getting a grip on Dawn because of her sadness. But theeeen Buffy goes wild on the demon, apparently she can see her. Also, oddly, getting into a ''pure state of being'' means getting naked. Oh, Angel! This scene is huuuuugely weird tbh. Also, the part where the demon literally pulls Buffy inside of her? Yeah, awkward and creepy. But then we finally get into this other (dark) dimension we've been seeing from the beginning. Abandonment Dimension? Whatever, it's all spooks. It turns out, this malignancy spirit Angel brought on actually trying to help Buffy, is the very reason evil forces converge onto Sunnydale. Performing this ''naked'' spell, Angel somehow screws up AGAIN and points the malignancy towards Sunnydale. La boca del infierno, as Whistler puts it. There's this funny scene where Giles is settling into Sunnydale High library and talks on the phone to his mother - wtf, never heard of her before - and then the malignant demons show up and he's all like ah... mmm... I have to ... go. Joyce picks out four cities for where they would move and Buffy pulls a name out of a hat. And THAT is the only reason they go to live in Sunnydale. I'm loving this Omnibus vol 2 more and more. Act 4: Trepidation Buffy and Dawn sleep at their dad's and it's really sucky to see him reassuring them they're still gonna be a family knowing what I know from the series. Best quote ever: ''Everything will be fine once we get to Sunnydale.'' I wish these Angel and Whistler scenes would stop, we get almost no exposition whatsoever. I gotta say, they are the one minus in an otherwise excellent issue. We're finally in Sunnydale and trouble immediately ensues because another malignant demon is roaming the town, some creepy moth-lady provoking people into being indecisive and acting all tired and cranky. After some decent horror imagery, Buffy gets rid of the demon. This issue is mostly just about how Summers women settle into Sunnydale and Angelus decides he needs a new name.

Do you have any headcanons for Gina Lestrade and Roly Beate/Patrick "Pat' O'Malley?
Alright, I’m gonna start with Pat, since there are a few Gina headcanons that are about DGS2 and I wanna put those under the read more tag!
 Pat:
He first met Rola while she was lost and he showed her the way. From then on, she showed up again and again and always managed to get herself lost. Or that’s what Pat thought. It took him a while to figure out that she did it on purpose - though she really is bad at directions - so she had an excuse to talk to him.
He went to see Viridian in the hospital and personally apologized to her for everything he did. I feel like there could be a friendship starting between him and Viridian, or maybe between Viridian and Rola too, because of course Rola also comes along and apologises too - she could have checked if Viridian is dead too after all.
He hates conflict of any kind. He and Rola don’t fight, but (sometimes before 1-4) he could sense how unhappy she was about how little they could be together. Maybe his parents got divorced when he was young and/or he had witnessed them fighting all the time and that’s why he swore himself to not let the same thing happen to him and Rola.
He didn’t do everything he did in 1-4 just for Rola, though that was the main reason. He was just so very tired and the thought of having to stay up and investigate was unbearable. He just wished to rest for one night.
Rola made the scarf they both wear. Though Pat loves it (as he loves everything Rola does and makes) it’s itchy as hell. He pretends it’s fine however. He also has a similar one he wears on patrol (for luck, as Rola says). He’s not so sure about the luck, but it does help him stay awake, since it’s so scratchy.
Gina
She and her street family kept some books - as long as they could afford keeping them, because sometimes they just needed the money more. Gina loved them very much even though she couldn’t read. Some had very beautiful illustrations and she could stare at them for hours. She and the other kids would make up stories which were based on the pictures inside. They made a game out of it and would do the same with all pictures they found - like in newspaper articles for example.
She’s generally a light sleeper. She has to be, living on the streets and all. But she also has nightmares. She must have lost some of her street siblings- either because they died or had betrayed her in some way (those trust issues must come from somewhere) - so before 1-3 she mainly dreamt about them. Ever since 1-3 her nightmares have changed and have become worse and worse. She often finds herself back in the omnibus. Sometimes it’s just reliving what had happened, at other times it’s about Megundal killing her as well or instead of Mortar.
Though Gina says that she likes her life on the streets, it’s not completely true. She does love her family and she is happy around them, but she has also just given up. She doesn’t think that she’ll ever be anything more than a pickpocket on the streets. So in a way Gina telling everybody she’s fine is also her telling herself that it’s fine and that that’s just what it is. It could be worse - maybe it had been worse when she was younger.
I’m gonna ignore canon here, but as part of the Egg Cult™, I’m just gonna pretend that Rupert taught Gina how to read in jail. I’m also 100% convinced that Rupert was the first one calling her Inspector Lestrade (maybe as a joke, maybe as some sort of farewell who knows). I just have a lot of thoughts about these two…
Spoilers for DGS 2 following!!
After DGS1 she still visits her street family very often. She tries her best to help them in some way and she also pretends to not see them steal, because she knows how hard life on the streets is. In turn they help her in her investigations and gather information.
To be honest, I’m still not sure how to feel about the whole Gregson/Gina relationship in DGS2… Him being her mentor/father figure is cute, but it also comes a bit out of nowhere? Like the guy was going to get Gina convicted and likely sentenced to death?! I’d have a hard time forgiving someone like that. Granted he did give her Toby, so that’s something, but still. Oh, well, I’m just gonna use this to my advantage :D Gina (apparently) forgives easily - especially after 1-5. It does take some time for her to trust people again who have wronged her. But she also understands how cruel life can be. She has made mistakes as well and she’s also still in the process of forgiving herself for her part in 1-3, so she can’t stay eternally mad at others who have also made mistakes.
After DGS2 she often falls asleep to the the sound of Gregson’s clock. It helps with the nightmares and generally calms her down. Whenever she doubts her choice to become an inspector, she looks at it and it gives her strength. Gregson wasn’t perfect, far from it, so it’s alright if she isn’t perfect as well. It makes her realise it’s important to move forward, because time doesn't stand still.

MUST-READ FYI, from AMAC website:
1. Donald Trump is legally the president until his term expires at noon on Jan. 20, 2021. Nothing that happened last week or will happen until Jan. 20 will affect his position or authority in any way.
2. Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. is neither the president nor the president-elect.
3. There is no such thing as the “office of the president-elect.” Barack Obama invented this phantom unconstitutional position back in 2008. It didn’t matter then and it doesn’t matter now, except in the minds of the media.
4. Biden will not be president-elect until the Electoral College meets on Dec. 14, if then. However …
5. Dec. 8 is the so-called “safe harbor” date, by which the states, under federal law, must have resolved any and all controversies regarding a disputed election, and their governors must so certify, in order for the names of the actual electors to be reported to the national archivist.
6. Neither state governors nor courts, including their high courts, have any authority over how federal elections are conducted in their states.
7. If the election results are still in doubt by Dec. 8—as they might well be—the Trump campaign could ask the state legislatures in the disputed battleground to set aside the tainted tallies and use their plenary powers under Article 1, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution to appoint and certify slates of electors favorable to the GOP.
8. Republicans now fully control 24 states, in which they have both houses of the legislature and the state house, including the battleground states of Arizona and Florida. Meanwhile, in Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, they control the legislatures, but the governors are Democrats. All six of those states could send Trump slates to the feds by Dec. 8, if they wish. Whether their Democratic governors would certify the slates is, of course, another matter. By contrast, the Democrats control only one current battleground state in which the vote is in dispute, Nevada, with a majority in the legislature and a Democrat as governor.
9. Should the election be thrown into the House of Representatives—as it was in 1800 and 1824—each state delegation gets one vote for president, and Trump would win, 31–18. For those scoring at home, that would mean 185,895,957 Americans, voting via their congressional delegations, would outvote 133,888,565 people living in Democrat states.
10. At the moment, the key state is also the Keystone State, whose 20 electoral votes would put Biden over the top, along with Arizona should they withstand legal challenges. Highly partisan Democratic control of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the governor’s mansion, however, has thus far ensured the state will remain contentious to the end. Reverse those votes, however, and then the quest for the White House all comes down to Georgia.
11. There can be no doubt that in several states, the results have been highly questionable, including Michigan and Wisconsin, in which mysterious tranches of votes—in some cases 100 percent for Biden—arrived in the dead of night during a “lull” in the counting, allowing the Democrats to figure out how many votes they needed for the former veep to pull ahead.
12. Elsewhere, electronic “glitches” have been reported, switching Trump votes to Biden, although rarely if ever the other way around. But this is par for the course regarding important elections, in which the Democrats somehow pull off amazing statistical improbabilities/impossibilities and nip the Republican candidate at the wire every time. Only once in recent history has it been stopped: in Florida in 2000, and there, they fumbled by asking for recounts in only three, heavily Democrat counties.
13. We can thank the weaponization of the CCP virus, in the guise of the overwhelmingly non-lethal COVID-19 disease, for much of the chaos. The Democrats have been pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a free and fair election, bulldozing constitutional and social norms in order to remove as many protections against arrant fraud as they possibly could, all in the name of “fairness.” The virus gave them the excuse to liberalize “early voting” and thus trash law and custom for our own “safety.”
14. During one of his few campaign appearances, the bumbling Biden made the following unconditional statement: “We have put together, I think, the most extensive and inclusive voter fraud organization in the history of American politics.” Imagine the howling on the left had Trump said something like that. And yet fraud and the Democratic Party have gone hand-in-hand at least since Tammany Hall in the 19th century. Indeed, it has become the punchline of a joke everybody knows, including Democrats. Except, they’re proud of it.
15. Some conservative commentators, among them lawyers, have tried to make the point that, yes, there’s fraud, but it really doesn’t matter unless it materially affects the outcome of the election. These are the same lawyers, by the way, who employ the doctrine of “falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus” (false in one detail, false in all) to discredit eyewitness testimony in big trials.
16. But fraud is fraud, and therefore its presence should rightfully invalidate the entire election, at least within each state where it provably occurs. It ought not to matter whether it involves outright ballot theft, forged ballots, illegal-alien ballots, fake “early voting” ballots, or obviously manufactured ballots delivered days after the nominal end of Election Day.
17. There was a time, perhaps, when a Richard Nixon—who knew he’d been cheated in Illinois by Chicago’s Mayor Richard Daley out of the 1960 election—could put country before party and refuse to challenge JFK’s hairsbreadth victory. But those days are long gone; the stakes are simply too high.
18. Everybody back then knew the Nixon and Kennedy differed in policy, not in love of country. Today’s critical-theory Democrats don’t love the country as founded, they love it for the kind of socialist utopia into which they’d like to fundamentally transform it. Don’t be fooled by their expressions of “patriotism.”
19. It’s time to rein in the media. Nobody—not even they themselves—views them as impartial reporters and fact-finders any more. Overwhelmingly leftist in outlook, today’s “reporters” prefer to think of themselves as social-justice warriors, effecting “change” by any means necessary. But members of the media should undergo the same scrutiny they apply to their political enemies, and be held liable under the same laws the rest of the population must abide by.
20. It’s also long past time to strip the “social media” companies and internet giants of the federal protection, specifically section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, that shelters them from liability actions on the grounds that they are “platforms,” not publishers. But as 2020 has shown, they were and are active partisans on the leftist side, slanting and shading the news—and even, in the case of the Hunter Biden laptop bombshell—suppressing it altogether.
In sum, we appear to be in uncharted waters. But as the elections of 1800, 1824, 1876, and 2000 have shown, we generally find a way to muddle through. Let the constitutional processes play out, and let’s see who takes the oath of office come January.

Help me, Doctor- Part 1
This is a new AU! Doctor! Ben hardy mini-series I am going to be working on which will have 3-4 parts. I hope you will all enjoy it, it is based on the book/ movie ‘Brain on fire’.
Taglist: @lunaticspoem @butlegendsneverdie @langdonzvoid @jennyggggrrr @luvborhap @radiob-l-a-hblah @rogertaylorsbitontheside @chlobo6 @rogertaylors-lipgloss @sj-thefan @omgitsearly @luckytrashgooprebel @scarsout @deaky-with-a-c @killer-queen-ofrhye @bluutac @vousmemanqueez @jonesyaddiction @rogahs-drowse @milanosaurus
Ben Hardy masterlist
Summary: (Y/n) is referred to Ben when her other doctors don’t know what’s wrong with her. Ben is one of the best doctors to treat her... but the problem is that he already knows (Y/n) and has slept with her before.
Part 2
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The end of her pen started to tap quietly but rapidly against the corner of the paper as she chewed on her lower lip. Why were there so many questions that needed answering? They should have most of her notes on file, there was no need for this which was simply going to go into a filing cabinet and be forgotten about.
Irritation flowed through (Y/n) as she felt her foot beginning to bounce up and down on the polished tiled floor that she guessed was cleaned every night since this was a hospital, after all.
This was the third time she had come here and it was the third questionnaire the snotty receptionist had made her fill out which was almost virtually the same as the other two she completed when she came. But this was a different department in the hospital, she figured that they didn't share patient files across departments since they clearly didn't communicate as much. At least if anything happened she would be covered since she had three of these questionnaires filled out.
(Y/n) began to mumble under her breath as she leaned her head to the left, her pen hovering over the box before she ticked no. About ninety percent of these questions were no. She wasn't pregnant, she hadn't been admitted to hospital for any illnesses or injuries in the past three months. She didn't have any of the illnesses it stated and neither did her family. Yes, she was up to date with all of her vaccinations.
Tipping her head back, (Y/n) raked her fingers through her hair as she crossed one leg over the other, the words dancing in front of her eyes as she felt a headache forming behind her eyes.
Dr Hardy.
This man better be good or else (Y/n) was going to be signing fifty complaint forms after this.
But Dr Mazzello said that he was the best and that he was good in his field of work. Even Dr Lee had said she may have to be referred to Hardy if her symptoms persisted and nothing happened with the meds both doctors had put her on. Everyone in the hospital seemed to hold this Dr Hardy in the highest regards but (Y/n) wasn't holding her breath.
For claiming to have the best doctors at this hospital, they sure didn't know what they were doing when it came to (Y/n). They had given her shitty diagnoses and sent her away only to have her come back again and again and be referred down the line. They had clearly been saving the best for last if they thought that Hardy was the God of doctors. (Y/n) should have gone to him in the first place and cut out the past two months of Mazzello and Lee both telling her she was fine.
The waiting room was rather large and for a moment (Y/n) wondered just how many of the other ten people were here to see Hardy. But there were two other offices on this ward so she guessed they were all split between the three.
"(Y/n) (Y/L/n)."
A sigh of relief passed through (Y/n)'s lips as she glanced to the large clock on the boring cream coloured wall above the reception desk. Huh, her appointment was actually on time today.
(Y/n) plastered a smile on her face as she handed the clipboard back over to the receptionist to stuff into the filing cabinet behind her before she turned around and looked at the doors. She turned right and wandered a few paces down the small corridor before knocking on the door to her left with the name tag 'B. Hardy' engraved in silver.
"Come in." Upon his words, (Y/n) pushed the door open as she suddenly felt a bundle of nerves igniting in her stomach.
What if he too couldn't find anything wrong with her? (Y/n) wasn't a hypochondriac, she knew there was something wrong and it had been going on for two months now, this wasn't fair anymore. She needed a diagnosis that was accurate and a treatment that was going to help. If this guy couldn't help her, she didn't know what she would do.
After (Y/n) shut the door behind her and turned to see the omnibus Dr Hardy, she choked on air when her eyes landed on him.
This couldn't be right.
When she heard about him and thought of him, with how good he seemed to be and how highly people spoke of him, (Y/n) assumed that he would be an older man. Most doctors had to gain a lot of experience before they were considered to be great at their job or highly recognised but this man was barely in his thirties, if that.
He had rather light blond hair that was waving into curls and folded back on his head with the sides shaved very short. He had piercing emerald green eyes that she could never forget and his lips were very dark fuschia pink.
This was the guy she slept with last week.
This was Ben.
He never told her he was a doctor, he never said what he did for a living come to mention it and he certainly never said his last name was Hardy. If (Y/n) remembered correctly he spun her some line about his last name being Jones, he clearly hadn't meant to see her again then. He was the guy that she had met in the bar not far from her house. He had been charming if a bit reserved but he had charming eyes that drew her in from the start.
(Y/n) had gone back to his place that night and she had been back two times since, the last time she saw him being last Thursday. He said he would call and if she was honest she had been slightly disappointed since it was now Wednesday and he hadn't called.
"(Y/n)." Ben's eyes widened as he felt his jaw dropping.
She couldn't be the patient that both Gwil and Joe had seen and couldn't treat. She couldn't be the reoccurring patient that his fellow workers were getting worried about. They never said her first name, they simply used her last name and Ben didn't question it because that was how they referred to most of their patients.
"So, you're Dr Hardy... or are you that Jones guy that never called me back?" (Y/n) managed a smile as she sat down on the chair on the other side of his desk. Watching as Ben stood to his feet as he tangled one hand in his curls as if he was trying to pull them from their roots.
"Hey, I've had a few emergencies this week, I was always gonna call you. I- professionally I'm Hardy but... I'll refer you to someone else, okay? I should have realised-"
"What?" (Y/n) narrowed her eyes as she shook her head, not wanting him to ramble excuses to her because that wasn't why she was here. She was here as a patient, not as someone who had caught up with him after clearly being dumped after a few one night stands. She didn't care about him not calling anymore and as for his name, it didn't really matter either way. She wanted to be diagnosed and he was not sending her away.
Ben seemed to take a moment to collect himself as he sat back down in his chair before he tried to gather himself. He straightened up in his chair and pushed his sleeves past his elbows. He was wearing plain black trousers and a white button-up shirt which seemed to be a rather good look on him.
"I'll get you an appointment with another colleague... I, love, I can't consult with you. I've slept with you, that's a compromise for us both I can't get involved with patients." Ben tried to smile but he stopped when (Y/n)'s expression showed him she wasn't having it.
Ben was clearly the guy that the other doctors had spoken so highly of and she had been passed around like a party favour up to now. He was not making her wait another two or three weeks for an appointment with someone who didn't know their head from their feet. (Y/n) had been told Ben was the best and she had been told he would help her so that was what he was going to do. She was here as a patient, not someone he fucked before. She wanted this to be over with so Ben had to help her.
"No. They told me you were the best and I've been passed around like a party favour up to now. Don't pass me on again, they said you would be able to help me so please, just help me." (Y/n) pleaded as she tried to refrain from either hitting his desk or crying in frustration. It was worrying to know that something was clearly wrong but no one knew what it was and to be passed around either meant that no one wanted to deal with her or they really didn't know what it could be. Ben had to help her.
She saw the contemplation in his eyes as he clung tighter to his hair before he sighed. No one knew they had slept together and it wasn't as if he had slept with her after treating her. He hadn't taken advantage of a patient, he was treating someone he knew. It wasn't going to affect his judgement and he didn't have feelings for her that were going to get in the way.
"I... okay. What's the problem, Mazzello and Lee said they've both treated you for about two months, and nothing's worked, right?" Ben opened the grey file in front of him and had a scan through the information set out in front of him. He had been shocked that both his colleagues had passed this case over to him because it wasn't like them not to find the problem but he had been happy to help.
"I've been losing time."
"What do you mean?" Ben leaned his head to the side as he looked over at her in confusion. A spark of worry igniting in his chest when he noticed she was rubbing at her eyes as if she couldn't see properly or that the light was affecting her.
"Missing hours, sometimes days. I think it's Tuesday but it's Thursday, that's why I missed my first appointment with Dr Mazzello. Then I had horrible headaches that made me feel faint. Mazzello said I was just partying and drinking too much but I don't hardly drink." (Y/n) had been rather rude with Dr Mazzello since he first dismissed her case by telling her that since she was still young, she was simply partying too hard.
He had told her to lay off the alcohol and try and calm down for a while and that she would be fine. (Y/n) tried telling him she didn't go to parties and she didn't drink enough to cause herself to have blackouts at random times during the day but he thought he knew best. (Y/n) stopped drinking for the first month altogether but it did nothing as she still seemed to lose time and the headaches were so awful that she couldn't get herself out of bed when they appeared.
"Dr Lee said that you had mood swings, like, sudden bursts of anger or happiness?" Ben scanned through the notes and the symptoms but they seemed rather random and none of them seemed to be consistent, they came and went and some of them had gone completely by now.
"Yes, but not really anymore..."
"Have you got any new symptoms?" Ben's tone was gentle and understanding as he closed the file and clasped his hands together, resting them on the desk. There was clearly something worrying or upsetting (Y/n) and he had to know so he could help her.
"I, I'm a journalist. I was writing an article, and I thought it was fine... but my boss couldn't read it. I'd jumbled up words and missed out letters b-but I didn't see it when I wrote it." (Y/n) didn't know how to explain it without sounding like she was either crazy or had in fact been drunk whilst she was at work. But when she wrote the article she read through it and thought that it was okay. Then when she gave it to her boss to check, she couldn't read it because it was incoherent. There were words that were mushed together, words missing letters and sentences that were missing words and didn't make sense.
When she read through it again (Y/n) realised all the mistakes, but she didn't when she first wrote it and kept looking through it.
"How many times has that happened?" Ben looked rather alarmed by that symptom as it made him get out of his seat and move so he was sitting in front of her instead. He grabbed a small light from his top pocket before gently pulling her eyelid higher so he could shine the light in her pupils.
Her pupils weren't constricting as fastly or effectively as they should be which was a bad sign.
"Just once, last week. That's why I asked for another appointment, and they referred me to you." (Y/n) had gone through everything she had written three times since then and everything had been fine but it had scared her. The moment it happened she called Dr Lee and explained it to him and he promised to get her an appointment with Ben as soon as he could because he didn't know how to treat her.
"Okay... hold your arms out straight towards me if you can." Ben moved his chair back a little and motioned with his hands for her to reach out to him.
He observed her holding her arms out which were subtly shaking. Reaching out, Ben took her hands in his own and looked at them as they were shaking as well but her nerves seemed to be reacting slower and she didn't realise it.
(Y/n) followed him with her eyes as he got to his feet and leaned over the desk, one hand pressed to the desk to keep himself upright as he grabbed his desk phone with the other. He pressed the phone between his ear and shoulder so he could tap in a few numbers before he gripped the phone again. (Y/n) didn't know who he was calling or why but she knew something clearly was wrong for him to just stop and make a phone call like this to who she guessed must be a colleague or someone in the hospital.
"I need an MRI booked now... yep, ten minutes and I'll be down thank you."
Ben moved to sit back down in front of (Y/n) as she looked a mix between scared and confused. What was he calling for an MRI for? What was wrong with her that he needed one now and not one booked for in a week's time or even longer?
"Love, I don't want you panicking but whatever is wrong is happening in your brain which is what I specialise in. Your responses are slower than they should be and I could be wrong, but you might be having some kind of stroke or something in the blood vessels. I need you to have an MRI to get this checked out now."
All of her symptoms, no matter how random they were or how quickly they disappeared, were things to do with the brain but Ben couldn't work out if they were to do with her blood vessels or her nerves. Either way, she was responding slower than she should be and it could be a stroke. If that was the case, Ben had to have it checked out now because if this was a stroke, the longer it was left untreated the worse it would be for (Y/n).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I'm guessing it wasn't a stroke, then?" (Y/n) spoke quietly as she clasped her hands together in her lap. Somehow, she felt stupid even though she wasn't the one who had suggested it. She felt as if she had somehow led him on or done something wrong because Ben had clearly been panicked by his suspicions that turned out to be a false alarm.
"No... I sat in on the results, there's no anomalies or blockages in your blood vessels and nothing wrong with your nerves. It has to be something in your brain causing this." Ben had sat in and watched the images of the MRI pop up on the screen. He had scanned through those images and conferred with the two doctors performing the MRI and none of them could find anything wrong.
There was no blockage in any blood vessel causing a stroke, all the vessels were working fine, none were too narrow or had an aneurysm leading off of them. And her nerves seemed to be fine as well. But it had to be something in her brain causing these problems. Ben was going to have to look at the neurological side of this to try and find the answer.
"Do you have any idea what it is?"
"I know where it is, that's a start. I want you to come in tomorrow and I'll take a few blood tests and do some examinations. I'm gonna find out what's wrong, I promise." Ben wasn't going to pass (Y/n) on to someone else or dismiss her and act like nothing was wrong because he had seen the signs today. There was evidently something happening and he knew it was happening in or around her brain.
It was a good start that all the signs pointed to her brain because it narrowed down the options and made the tests more specific. He wanted to do some tests as soon as possible because he didn't like the thought of what would happen if he left this any longer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I shouldn't be doing this." Ben whispered the words quietly to himself as he rested his arm over his eyes as he bit down on his lip. Mentally scolding himself for what he was now doing.
(Y/n) was a patient, she was someone who was meant to be under his care right now because it had been two weeks since she came to him at the hospital and he still didn't know what the problem was. And yet here he was, laid in bed with her.
He knew that it would be a bit complicated since they had slept together before she became his patient but he definitely should not have brought her home and he shouldn't have had sex with her. It complicated things and it made it unethical because she was his patient. Ben couldn't take advantage of his patients and he had been on courses to state all the reasons why he should never get personally involved with his patients. This was crossing a line but he had done this willingly.
He wasn't even sure if he regretted sleeping with her or if this was just his nerves and the good side of him wanting to play by the rules.
Removing his arm from over his eyes, Ben shook his head as if he was trying to shake the negative thoughts out of his head before he turned on his side so he was facing (Y/n). He already knew she didn't have a problem with this because they had hooked up before she had been referred to him. Ben wasn't doing anything wrong because right now his thoughts or any feelings towards her weren't compromising his judgement on how to treat her and she didn't see this as something wrong.
Ben knew he simply panicked too much because he had never gone against the rules before.
He'd never slept with a patient before.
Laying his arm over (Y/n)'s waist, Ben pressed his face into the crook of her neck as he closed his eyes, trying to shut his mind down so he could go to sleep. It was late and for once he wasn't at work in the morning, he had a lot of sleep to catch up on.
The doctor just found himself dulling his thoughts down enough so that he was able to slip into a state of sleep when he found himself waking up again. Tiredly opening his eyes, Ben lifted his head when he realised it was (Y/n) mumbling something that had caught his attention. He didn't remember her sleep talking the other few times he had slept with her and he knew she hadn't said anything about it before.
Looking at her, Ben tried to look at her properly through the darkness but when his eyes seemed to focus, he pushed himself up so he was resting on his elbow and looking at her. She wasn't sleep talking because she had her eyes open, she was alert and she seemed to be awake.
Unravelling his arm from around her waist, Ben rested his hand delicately to the side of her face, brushing his thumb over her cheek as he wondered what was happening.
"Love, you okay?"
(Y/n)'s eyes found his own very quickly but she didn't move a muscle. Another noise left her slightly parted lips but it wasn't words, it was a strained sound like she was quietly moaning or screaming. When Ben felt her shaking beneath him he wondered if she was experiencing sleep paralysis. He had seen patients with this, they couldn't talk because their throat muscles tightened up and they could be awake whilst experiencing this.
"Look at me love, okay? It's okay you just need to breathe slowly and calmly." Ben kept his words steady and calm as he reached out and turned the bedside lamp on so he could see her better. She did look like she was experiencing sleep paralysis and Ben knew it never lasted long, only a minute or two, if that.
Ben felt his chest tightening when (Y/n)'s eyes that had been piercing his own suddenly seemed to become drowsy before they rolled to the back of her head. As soon as her eyelids dropped, her chest arched up as every muscle seemed to tighten and her limbs started to jerk and tremble. Ben leaned back so he was out of the firing line when her arm started to spasm as the sudden muffled noises completely stopped.
She wasn't having paralysis, she was having a seizure.
"Shit, shit shit! Keep breathing for me (Y/n), you're okay." Ben swiped the pillow from beneath her head and threw it to the floor so she was laying flat before he held onto her arm and her waist. He turned her so she was laying on her right side facing away from him before he moved one hand to her neck to check that her airways had stayed open and not seized up or that she wasn't choking on anything.
He nodded to himself when he felt that she was still breathing properly, if rather quickly but she wasn't choking. He tipped her head down and held his hand to the back of her head as she continued to seize. He started to hum a random tune because he didn't know if she was unconscious or if she was awake and able to feel and hear anything.
Ben couldn't leave her laying on her back in case she started to vomit or she choked on anything so he had to keep her in the recovery position without hurting her head or neck.
"You're gonna be okay."
Tumblr media
I had report on the Loveless final compiled together from way back on March 28th 2019, so I’ll post it here again to give a small taste....!
●The stage lighting for Namid[A]me was apparently breathtaking, they made it look like it was actually raining, ●Yumao used a real gong for Social Clock. ●During Senseless Wonder yg went all the way over to snd’s side of the stage, stuck his body against his, and they played it out together. Then came the encore MC break.
●Yu started cheering himself on, while making flamboyant poses: "Yumaooooo!!  Oooh~!  WOooooOOah *rough voice* !!💪( >ω <💪)” Crowd: “You’re so cool~!” Yu: “Thank goo~ *Goes to a cutesy voice*” “You’re so cute~!” “Thank goo. Thank you!” SND: “Hey dude, they’re all callin’ ya cute and cool y’know.” Yu: “…(short pause) Thank goooo~~~”
wowaka: (laughing) We’re done, that's all we need for MC ahahaa.
●Leaving members stuck on what to ramble about, they’ve already talked so much throughout the whole tour, what’s left? So wo suggested that they do a re-cap on all those fun boring discussions they’ve had. Omnibus time.
●Back when the Japan was collectively swept off their feet by the Olympic ice skater Yuzuru Hanyu-kun and his performance, wo had also praised him during MC.  Yet just thinking about him puts pressure on Yumao, it inspired Yumao to do his best. And as the next song on Rie’s set list was the inspirational Memai, he concentrated so hard, poured himself in and played super neatly, “Oh shit oh no oh shit, Hanyu-kun makes me nervous.” Yumao explained.
●During the span of the tour SND fell off the stage way more then once... SND: “The skin on my back peeled off once too.” Yu “Eeeh?!” SND “Saying it peeeled all the way off is an overstatement but..” ”Well then the scab ripped off.” “Seriously?!” “But it healed nicely.” “Ahh” “After that, in Niigata, when I went to brandish my guitar up with a “pwooosh” towards the roof, it went bonking into my forehead.” ●SND’s middle finger had also stopped moving, (nerve palsy maybe??) During Talkie Dance there’s the “piropiropiro” where a “pero, pero” bit comes in between (Queue SND and Yuma singing the riff together), which is very straining. He has to press his fingers against the strings one by one to play it, he was scared but nonetheless. So Yuma watched him at the piropero part wondering “Oh no oh no is it gonna move? Is it moving today??””
When it came down to it his middle finger moved for him so thank goodness... (Manju comment: SND is this karma for all the times you gave the crowd the middle finger when they cheered your name,,, or flipped off girls who waved at you, or giving wo the middle finger a lot? God I love you)
●Yumao “Also ygarshy laughed ONCE!” “There was the one time I was talking nonstop (queue SND and Yumao making “blaghblergh” noises together to imitate him). When yga let out a chuckle, which made me super proud in front of everyone… I went Wahooo!!! but turns out it wasn’t because my story was funny or anything.  It was because yga was off on his own! Testing how many candies he could eat before we would shut up!” SND: “Did you chuckle because you finished the third candy?” yg: “Uhhh” SND: “Well tell us about it.” wowaka: “Is this the first time he’s talking?” yga: “See, I always think our encore MCs are… long. So I feel like having some candy. I was originally worried I wouldn’t be able to finish eating one in time, the song would start and turn into a problem, but.... it turned out that day’s had become the longest MC yet. I lost my inner bet, damn it, I thought. You guys really can talk. Three whole candies worth of talk! So I laughed, and Yumao thought I was laughing at hims story”
Yu: “Yeah yeah!! Honestly the story I had been telling didn’t have a punchline, so I just used your laugh as an escape.”
SND “Foolish” Yu “Yep” wowaka “Well that day the most” Crowd “laughing” Yumao “...Thank goo~ (laughing)” (Yumao you never have a punchline I swear to God I love you too)
●wowaka talked about the story from back when he used to be so so scared of standing in front of people. In middle school his teacher chose him to represent his class in the English speaking competition, yet he was so afraid that he just, went out to the podium crying hysterically. “I can’t talk English in front of everyone waghhh....”
But now he’s able to do >this<. He’s become such an adult.
SND “I bet there wasn’t even as many people at the competition as there is people here today, haha and you’re able to even talk naturally here, eh, look at you.”
Yu: “Ahh even SND’s such a big boy now~.” SND: “Well we all have.” ●They announced the next nexUs tour at the Loveless tour final. “We just love doing shows”
●Also Pre- Little Cry Baby emotional speech from wowaka.   “In living we find cool things and sparkling things, yet there’s moments when we betray those things, we worry if ahhh was I wrong with that, there’s so much of this, in actuality that’s all I do, yet still we’re made out of things we can’t throw away, that’s what I think, what is it! Like those sorta texture that have a paint dried over them, like things that are just superficial just… Those are things that I have NO FUCKING  interest in! Like it’s that, c’mON, with music, people are just humans!! trying to be, they’re trying to do what they can do! I have interest in things that only humans can do, some things that can even surpass human, and that’s what fuels me to do music. As long as you follow me, I feel like ,, I could go anywhere!!!!! thank you always, thank you for making me!! Thank you for being here!!!”
This was also the showing they used during the Memorial Service on June 1st… STAFF WE ARE GOING TO CRY “Thank you we were Hitorie, let’s definitely! *through deep breaths* definitely! Meet again!”
Tumblr media
Also some from IKI
●wowaka’s mother came to this show.... As divulged in this interview. THE ORAL CIGARETTES had sent Rie flowers in celebration of the event, which were on display at the venue.... Shiohigari SND’s good friend went, also the Synth player of the band “the telephones” who took the picture that’s featured on this blog) went also! ●Before Shutter Doll Yumao did his signature, Yumao! Yumao! Yumao! cheer on rhythm with the familiar intro, but with “Final! Final! instead. Along with We’re ●Hagure no Color had snazzy band introductions molded in between it. ●wowaka had actually cried during Little Cry Baby..... It really is a song that’s so important to him.... I’m anxious to see the video... ●MC: One was wowaka talking about how thankful he is for everyone and everything about this IKI tour. wowaka “I don’t want it to to enddd!” SND “We’re been on this tour for 4 months, it’s been a long time though, it’s amazing, it’s a new record for us.” wowaka “Now what am I going to do with myself tomorrow.“ SND “Go back to our dark dark life...” wo “Why”
SND “You guys had been waiting outside all this time, how was it, was it cold, are you okay? Further crowd: “We were okay-! Closer crowed “(less voices) We were okay.” SND “So you guys were okay and you were cold, okay (laughing). Well if you were cold, then see this sweatshirt Leader is wearing.. please wear one too That thing is perf.  Crowd: “Woooah!!” SND: “Why the fuck ‘Woah.’ Even if you said you’re okay then still go buy one alright. Thanks..”
Lobster Johnson: A Chain Forged in Life - “The Forgotten Man”
Story: Mike Mignola & John Arcudi | Art: Peter Snejbjerg | Colours: Dave Stewart | Letters: Clem Robins
Originally published by Dark Horse in Lobster Johnson: The Forgotten Man | April 2016
Collected in Lobster Johnson - Volume 6: A Chain Forged in Life
Plot Summary:
Homeless men are going missing from their tent city within New York. As an army vet attempts to get help from the Lobster, he discovers that their disappearance is tied to something more horrific than he could have imagined.
Reading Notes:
(Note: Pagination is in reference to the chapter itself and is not indicative of anything found in the issue or collections.)
Tumblr media
pg. 1 - Peter Snejbjerg artwork throughout the Hellboy universe is always a treat. The feel of the the shanty town here is haunting, especially with the grey pall of Dave Stewart’s colours. It’s very gloomy.
Also, I love that visually it seems to be placing this one at Riverside Park, even before the location is named. What with the placement of where the Empire State Building happens to be in the background. Nice attention to detail.
Tumblr media
pg. 3 - This is disappointing, but definitely an accurate depiction of how many people see, or don’t see as it were, the homeless. No longer as people.
pg. 4 - This is Proverbs 19:21. I quite like the rather insidious seeds being planted here about controlling people. It pretty much immediately sets up the preacher guy as someone suspicious.
pg. 5 - And it’s made even creepier when Isaiah finds his friend’s university ring. This soup kitchen is serving people!
Tumblr media
pg. 7 - It’s kind of funny as to how many times these cannibals are going to show up in one form or another in Lobster Johnson. The idea of New York City having a sewer cannibal plague is right up there with alligators and the midnight meat train.
pg. 8 - Great hero reveal with Lobster Johnson’s appearance.
Tumblr media
pg. 9 - It’s disturbing as to how this stew was put together. That just the bones, buttons, and viscera would be thrown together is horrifying. Not that a tidy stew would make it any better, but it just shows the bad cooking as well. Horrifying on multiple levels.
pg. 10 - I like this touchstone for Harry and Cindy’s relationship.
Tumblr media
pg. 11 - Preacher guy’s definitely a little batty.
pg. 12-14 - Wonderful action here. I also love how as the fight gets more and more dire for Lobster and his team the shadows get darker and the light in the colour starts going out.
Tumblr media
pg. 15 - It’s great to see the homeless men arrive as back-up.
Tumblr media
pg. 17 - Like with the cannibals, we’re really getting another callback here. Frank previously was in Get the Lobster! I quite like the shift for the flashbacks.
Tumblr media
pg. 20 - This ties back to both what was going on in Get the Lobster! with the radio controls that were being planted in the heavies’ brains and the earlier bit from Proverbs this issue. It’s about as disturbing as the people stew.
Tumblr media
pg. 21 - This is kind of chilling.
pg. 22 - And we get a hint of what was to come for Cindy.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
Though a great little story in its own right, with some gorgeous artwork from Peter Snejbjerg and Dave Stewart, this is one of the single issue stories that gets lost in the collected format. In that I mean that while it works well standing on its own, the elements through the story serve as a connective tissue through the Get the Lobster! arc and planting the seeds for Cindy Tynan’s career change in Metal Monsters of Midtown. It’s only a little thing, but it’s different reading it after the fact rather than in individual issue publication order. Similar things happen in Abe Sapien. This is something, however, that’s often fixed when reading in an omnibus.
Week of Bookblr - Top 5 Best Books of 2018
So, while I did read some really bad books there were also some really great books this year. I actually narrowed my list down to the top five books that I thought were really great. So without further ado let’s get into my top 5 books of 2018
#5 Scythe by Neal Shusterman
Tumblr media
Shusterman always has these great premises and this book is no exception. In this world humanity has basically cured death. The only threat is overpopulation so you have these people called Scythes who’s job it is to maintain the population. Shusterman some how figured out my greatest irrational fear is immortality so that’s terrifying. Along with a creepy AI, some really great characters, and an appropriately asshole-ish villain this book deserves the number five spot. Rest in peace Shawn Dobson.
#4 Fullmetal Alchemist Vol. 8 by Hiromu Arakawa:
Tumblr media
Words cannot describe how much I love Fullmetal Alchemist the series. It probably the closest thing to a perfect series. I absolutely adored it and my favorite volume of this series was the penultimate Volume 8 (the omnibus version). First of all the van Hohenheim and Father stuff was amazing. I love seeing Mustang’s crew and the Briggs troops take over the city. It is so cool how clever these characters are. Mustang going absolutely nuts with Envy and that talk was so beautiful. Then when Mustang apologizes to Riza, I just teared up. It had my second favorite fight scene with Greed and Wrath. So awesome to see Greed and Ling work together. But it also had the best fight scene in the entire series which is when the Armstrong siblings and Curtis couple fight against Sloth. I did not know I wanted to see these four characters fight together but it was the most epic thing I have ever seen. I loved it so much. It was bad ass and powerful and SO AMAZING! I loved it.
#3 The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick:
I read and listened to this on audiobook and it was unbelievable. It was a mixture of the wonderful writing and the sound design that made this story come to life. Selznick was a new to me author and I so happy that I found his books. This one especially was whimsical and charming. It had beautiful artwork. The characters felt so real and it was so heartwarming. This is something that you need to read when you’re feeling down and need to put a smile on your face. It’s a classic in the making.
#2 Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
Yeah, yeah I have to put Brandon Sanderson on this list. I think the real shocker is that he isn’t number one on this list. Nothing this year really felt like it deserved the number one spot. Legion and White Sand Vol. 2 were both five star stories but I think Skyward is the best that he published this year.
The reason that this book does deserve to be on this list is the characters, especially Spensa. If you saw my Top 5 Worst of the year list you’ll see that I hate overly aggressive main characters. When I first read this book, I had the kneejerk reaction to hate Spensa. She was aggressive and violent. However, I actually really liked Spensa. I cannot believe it. Brandon Sanderson took the trope that I hate the most and made it something I liked. I’ve talked with other people who HATE this trope as well and they were shocked at how well Spensa’s character was handled.
I think there are three reasons why Spensa works. First is that she is given a logical reason for acting this way. First when she’s young it’s more child-like and then as she gets older it’s because she’s an outcast in this society for what her father did. Second, it’s a lot of talk. She generally never really physically hurts anyone. She’s never really mean. There’s no mean-spirited-ness to her. Third, and this is the most important thing: she is not automatically great at flying. Spensa loves flying and wants to do it more than anything in this world. But she is not automatically amazing at it. She has to work her butt off to become great. Which not only ties into the theme of meritocracy but also shows a character having to work for things.
I also really loved most of the side characters. Jorgen was a tad bland for me, I hope that we get to see a little more of him, maybe even add his own POV chapters. I was really sad when someone either left flight school or died (and man do a lot of characters die in this). The story is portrayed very realistically to how you’d think flight school would work. It also gave Spensa a chance to grow and realize how dangerous this path could be. M-Bot is obviously the best character. He funny, sarcastic and an obvious self-insert.
#1 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Tumblr media
I am so mad at myself for waiting so long to read this absolutely brilliant book. This book is about a girl living in Nazi Germany where her adoptive family hides a Jewish man in their basement. I know, so uplifting! This story is absolutely heartbreaking (no surprise there). Towards the end I was just crying nonstop at everything that happened.
First of all Zusak really humanizes the Germans, even those who belong to the Nazi party. He doesn’t make them all evil and cruel. All of these characters are human beings. These are people who are just trying to survive and you really feel for all of them. This plays into the Death being the narrator. Death does not discriminate and thus he can have an objective point of view when it comes to what is going on. He is so alien yet relatable. Despite being Death he brings some light heartedness to this story. Zusak pulls no punches. When Liesels parents die it is the saddest thing imaginable. I am tearing up right now as I write this. Zusak made me feel like I too had lost someone. It is so heartbreaking. I am glad that Max had lived and found Liesel. It was the most beautiful thing.
This book is truly a classic. A book that will never leave me and that why it deserves the number one spot.
