#RIP to the legacy post editor. you will be missed. while queueing this post and the last one it's removed the option for me to switch to the#old one and is making me use the new one. which is like not bad. it's not a bad editor. i just don't like change as most tumblr users don't#it also just appends the post you make directly to the top of the currently-displayed posts behind it even if it's not meant to go there#which is a little bit scary when i'm on the queue page and i click “add to queue” for a post that's supposed to go up on august 18th#to see it immediately appear above mega metagross. the legacy post editor didn't do that. it made you refresh the page if you wanted to see#your own new post on the dashboard. which i think was better!! honestly!! i've never Made a post using the new editor to see how it behaves#only ever queued up FFP using this thang. but that's also bc i feel like i don't post very much. i need smth Interesting to say when i post#on my main blog i mean. i don't make extraneous posts on here (usually) unless i'm answering an ask or something. which. still have yet to#miss one to this day. going strong#bibarel#can you tell idk what to say about this guy. what are they‚ water-type? big chance i'm fucking wrong and they're just pure normal#OKAY i was right. normal/water. semi-interesting typing and i get why they're a water-type. but. i never use. bibarel. even as a kid who#didn't understand or care about competitive. i knew bibarel was not very strong. it's a route 1 normal-type fucker. and maybe it's like#better than i think or something but tbqh it's a sinnoh 'mon and i already have another sinnoh water-type that has my heart. buizel#so bibarel was not so much in the cards for me. bro i should do like. a mono-type run of a pokémon game one day. that would be fu#do folks do that? is that a challenge run that actually exists? nuzlockes exist so i don't see why not. okay i'm doing it. my next replay o#any pokémon game is hereby decreed to be a water-type mono-type run. i may or may not liveblog it on my main blog#and it may or may not be nuzlocke. we shall see#hell maybe i'll stream it. maybe that could be fun. i don't know of *anyone* who would be interested in that but it tends to help me#actually go about completing games when i have someone there like. waiting for me to do so

normal-type pokemon pantheon
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
for an introduction, how i have decided to split this up is into major deities, minor deities, major spirits, and minor spirits. i will not be creating anything in-depth in terms of the actual spirits in question, as this is not a correspondence list but rather just a loose guide for constructing a pantheon. this will involve a few concepts to get you started in working with certain pokemon, but again, it is not extensive.
in my personal belief, these spirits are standalone and evolution is completely within the pokemon universe, as opposed to our universe - however, you are free to experiment as you like, and even work with multiple pokemon of an evolutionary tree. this will also be put under a cut for length.
Tumblr media
definitions:
the "major" deities would be equated to the legendary pokemon; the ones with more inherent strength and govern over more powerful concepts that we encounter in the universe (such as governing over the sea as opposed to water). they are less involved in our personal lives, but are still worth reaching out to.
the "minor" deities would be equated to the non-legendary, but still significantly powerful pokemon within the type. they are usually fully evolved. while they do not govern over powerful concepts such as the major deities, they are still powerful enough to be considered a deity as opposed to a spirit. there is a sense of stronger importance with minor deities than major and minor spirits. they are more involved in our personal lives than major deities, but are still less involved than major and minor spirits.
the "major" spirits would be equated with non-fully evolved pokemon, usually a middle evolution. what they govern over is less powerful than the major and minor deities, but are still stronger than the minor spirits. they are more involved in our lives than the major and minor deities, but less so than minor spirits.
the "minor" spirits would be equated with base-level pokemon. what they govern over is the least powerful of all, but are the most approachable and workable spirits to involve yourself with. they are very involved in our personal lives.

Translator's Notes:
[1] lit. “Bidoof Gang”. Pokemon games feature antagonistic groups known as “[noun]-dan” (“noun-gang”), translated as “Team [noun]” in the English localization [2] lit. “madly in love”, a status condition known as Infatuation in English [3] lit. “always B”, pressing B while a Pokemon evolves cancels the evolution. I felt that “mash” best portrayed the enthusiasm displayed here lol [4] lit. “underlings”, a group of NPC trainers that are the lowest members of the evil team, translated as “Grunt” in the localization [5] lit. “airhead”, one of the three Abilities Bidoof can have along with Simple and Moody [6] From what I can tell this is online slang telling other fans of a character to not interact with you? [7] Referring to Rock Climb, which Bidoof can’t learn while Bibarel can [8] It seems “kenmai” is a Japanese fandom abbreviation for Swords Dance based off its kanji (tsurugi -> ken, both meaning sword) [9] As in, Bidoof's strength isp in the number of HMs it learns lol [10] Honestly I’m going by the PV here, it seems to indicate the distorted voice through Miku’s Rotom Phone is the Boss of Team Bidoof

Work in progress
so I figure I'd post a little work in progress here since this chapter has had a rough start.
also, I wanted to post a little fluffy moment with Lampent, cause it's been a hot minute. might do more of these, depending on how I feel.
warning this has not been proofread yet so there are probably a few mistakes.
-
Lampent hovered close to her trainer as he slept, her eyes closed as she ignored the world around her and focused solely on her partner.
His breathing
His Heart beat
And his soul
That was all she needed, to know he was going to be okay.
Lampent was honestly surprised that she had not been kicked out. Had this been Unova, they would have recalled her back into her Pokeball and given it to Drayden, and she would not have seen her trainer until after he was better.
In fact, she had been shocked when Calaba had ejected a group of humans what had tried to remove her, claiming she was ‘one of Almighty Sinnoh’s creations and deserved to be with her partner as much as Calaba’s Bibarel deserved to be with her.’ a kind sentiment that Lampent appreciated, even if the old woman still kept a close untrusting eye on her.
She had escaped her Pokeball the moment she’d been able to, distressed to find that her trainer and his family had been harmed and she had been unable to help. And Since, had refused to leave him, only moving aside so that the old human Calaba could tend to him.
Ingo had been hit in the head rather head during the Avalanche, and had been left with a minor fractures in his skull and knee and a concussion good measure.
Lampent had to admit she had panicked a bit when she first escaped her Pokeball and saw
Trainer looking like he had just lost a fight with a Mow rotom.
But now that the blood had been cleaned off and bandages had been applied, he was looking much more lively. Even if he was sleeping a lot.
She drifted closer to him, resting an arm on his head as gently as she could. He would be fine, she would make sure of it, even if she forced herself to learn Pain split to do it.
Behind her she could hear Eelektrik’s Pokeball rattling on the floor next to his trainer. The eel pokemon clearly trying to break free.
Poor Eelektrik, he never did get the hang of opening his Pokeball from the inside. As much as she disliked Zoroark for being a jerk to his trainer, the two often teased Eelektrik on his inability to exit his Pokeball on his own. Chalking it up to his lack of arms.
Normally she would have let him out by now, but she figure she’d let him struggle for a little bit longer. Besides she wanted to see the look on his face when she told him Emmet het been curled up with another Pokemon. Even if it was just a Bergmite given to him to help with thepain and swelling in his shoulder.
Though she was honestly surprised that she’d been allow to stay and yet Eelektrik had not been let out. Then again, it might have been because she was already out, and they didn’t want to risk releasing some of the bigger Pokemon the twins had caught during their time.
She had heard the Palina human warning the others about Gyarados, and Lampent had to agree with that. If she had panicked over Ingo when she had first seen him, she did not want to see how the quick tempered motherly water-type would have reacted.
Or maybe the humans of the Pearl clan were a lot like Eelektrik and just didn’t know how to the Pokeball.
The world may never know.
Once more Lampent shut her eyes once more, feeling that urge to sifin off some of the life energy from the occupants within the room, and pushed it back down. The urge successfully squashed, she flew over to Ingo’s satchel and opened it, removing one of the treats she knew Ingo in there and consuming it, before returning to her trainer’s side.
Ever since the battle with the Abomasnow, and her cowardly attempt to runaway, Lampent had been trainig in secert when her Trainer was sleeping or otherwise distracted. All under the direction and watchful eye of both Lady Sneasler and Gliscor.
The two older pokemon instructing her on the best way to push herself. How to use less energy with her attacks and how to best suppress the natural urges that would hurt her partner.
And it was working.
Day by day her attacks were hitting harder without the need to repleshise herself constantly, and Ingo was no longer dragging his feet after an hour of spending time with her.
Sure after her little training sessions, she was normally tired but it was nothing that one of the Warden’s muffins couldn’t take care of.
It was worth it just to be able to coexist with her trainer for more then a hour.
Sure, the longer she spent with him the more of a test it was to keep herself in. but for him she was willing to step up to the challenge.
If the story Ingo’s dad had told her was correct, then the man had once had a Chandelure for a partner and they had been able to make it work. If Warden Ingo was able to become so close with his partner he was able to remember them even with his amnesia, then she could do the same for her trainer.
His breathing
His heart beat
And His Soul
That was all she needed to know that he was going to be okay.
And even if things started to look dark for him, she would be his guiding light.

I never noticed until now that Lian, Ingo, Melli, and arguably Sabi all have type advantages over their nobles. Huh. In which case, yeah, giving Arezu the cyndaquil would be the best lol! My best guess as to how it happened is that Laventon tried to plead with Cyllene to take one because she doesn't have a pokemon other than abra who isn't a fighter, and eventually she gave in and chose the oshawott because Ingo offhandly remembered and mentioned that they turn out to be good sword fighters like her, after she's like why do I even need a baby pokemon when I have a sword. Then I guess cyndaquil didn't want to be left behind and just kinda left with them where it then bonded with Arezu. Good idea with Laventon just switching out with Cyllene though! That does make the most logistical sense.
Ingo is polite and friendly, but on the long term he's exhausted and a bit checked out so he's kind of the middle ground between Arezu and Cyllene. I bet he could turn them all into crazy strong trainers too, although I'm not sure how into it Arezu would be since she's got a strong passion for being a hair dresser. Then again, Ingo has a strong passion for trains and he just combined the two lol. Maybe she becomes the first person in Hisui who professionally grooms pokemon on top of giving people hair cuts, since you can find people to do that in other games and it raises friendship.
One of my favorite tropes is Sneasler following Ingo back to Unova, so yes, I am all for this interpretation of her lol. It'd be an interesting dynamic if both her and the more responsible Lilligant were on the team together. I could see her being kind of like Ingo before the fall; responsible, well-mannered, energetic, and talkative.
Huh, I suppose if we wanted to keep kinda close to canon, they all get frenzied from the start but it doesn't originally seem like every area had a noble that got hit? Coastlands clearly didn't get one, Arezu was hiding Lilligant's, and Melli didn't think it was a problem so he didn't report it right away. That'd leave just the fieldlands and the icelands as ones they knew about. So Arezu sits on it the whole way through Kleavor, which would probably make her feel worse and worse the longer she does, because she was only just handed this big important duty, Adaman trusts her, and she doesn't like lying to him or her new friends even if it's just by omission. But once they get Kleavor back to normal she realizes that she kind of has to speak up now. And afterward maybe Lilligant joins them, if not to other areas then at least every time they're in the mirelands doing survey work.
The other idea is interesting too though. With so many of them they might be able to stop the growlithe from getting kidnapped too, which would stop both Lilligant and Arcanine from getting frenzied, though it'd make going through the highlands a nightmare if they can't use Sneasler. I'm not sure if stopping them from hit would actually change anything. Although, it'd also be kind of interesting if they were playing with fire, and being so close to Lilligant when she was hit while they were traveling together set off Sneasler getting frenzied too. It wasn't a direct hit, but if she was close enough it could branch off to her or travel as a ground current into her or another of their pokemon.
also calaba has a bibarel, which is a water type and so SE against ursaluna, and if you think that iscan has a qwilfish/overqwil, which is something that's been thrown around before, that also beats his ghost fish noble. AND palina has a growlithe as a partner, and technically that's SE against itself and arcanine by extension, though that's more of a wash since they're... the same species. AND if you fight her in the path of tenacity (which i think those pokemon are dubiously canon, but anyway) arezu herself gets a bronzor, which beats lilligant! i think the only two with partners you fight that aren't effective against their nobles are mai and gaeric. it's a really funny trend lmao. and aww, yeah, laventon talked cyllene into taking at least one of them, and ingo mentioned the oshawott thing so she was like fine i guess that works, and then cyndaquil just didn't want to get left behind while its starter buddies had adventures. also, arezu's lived her whole life in the mirelands, the warmest region in hisui, so when their group starts going up to the colder areas she is going to be Suffering. so having a portable heater partner will def help there, too
arezu as the first ever pokemon salon... i love that SO MUCH omg. i mean, there are probably others in the world who've done something similar maybe, but she'd def be the earliest in the game timeline. that's SO perfect. she starts by branching out from hairstyling to attempt to give ingo a hand combing out lady sneasler's winter coat once spring comes around (which is really a two and a half person job and results in a mountain of undercoat big enough to make another sneasler out of) and that's the gateway, now she's off. she's doing pokemon spas, massages, fertilizer for grass types, you name it, she's trying it. between the salon, the move tutor, and the totally-not-a-battle-facility ingo's running, jubilife is gonna be the top destination for people trying out this new "training" thing within the year (much to kamado's endless torment)
oh no lilligant being really similar to pre-fall ingo is too good... that's so cute and such an unlikely duo i love it. meanwhile arezu and sneasler are more different but sympathize with each others' desires to just kind of, like, Not. they have a big job and they don't rrreally want to do it that much but they gotta, the other two are herding them. Bonding. plus as mentioned above arezu gives really good brushies and sneasler is a noble of simple wants
yeah they're both really good and fun options is the thing. the idea of frenzy being, like... contagious is REALLY interesting though. like, not even as part of this au, just like... in general. the idea of it behaving less like a magic switch-flip and more like some kind of gradual disease? i mean, i've already made the comparison between the alpha frenzy and a cognitive-affecting disease, but i don't think i ever went quite that step. that's really interesting. it opens up the possibility for the frenzy as a whole to be like this, zombie virus type of thing, that volo unleashed on hisui entirely by accident and now can't stop. but now we're getting off topic shksjhsjkh
but anyway. where were we. yes. i almost feel like we could take the opportunity of having two wardens accompanying the protag and do something really different from canon? like, flip the entire game order on its head. plus there's the added complication of whatever ingo's potentially seeing, if he at any point gains extra insight into what's causing this, or predicts something like the red sky. though i think his predictions are extremely scattershot on account of being entirely incidental and not actually targeted at anything. so maybe instead of, or in addition to, curing the frenzy, they're also working on some other mission? to hunt down information, or seal the distortions as they open or something? idk, i'm thinking out loud

Helena's journal: Turnback Cave.
Hey, everyone! Me and the rest of the group are on the way to Veilstone's airport for our flight to Unova, bus ride has been slow so Lena asked me to share this here so we could get some opinions once the flight is done.
That place was... Scary, to put it in some way. Confusing, I hope someone can tell us what it was all about because it legit was one of the most terrifying things I've ever done.
._._._._
We are approaching what seems to be Sendoff Spring, if the directions we got at town are correct.
The path so far has been rather calm, with no complications to speak of, and if this were a normal day I wouldn't complain but coupled with the warnings of only 8 badge trainers being able to handle it... Something is not right.
_._.
The rumors about a hidden fourth lake were true, in a way.
The terrain turned difficult as we went higher up the mountains, in the end we needed help from our pokemon to reach it, the access turned out to be a steep slope, almost too vertical to climb safely.
And calling it "the fourth lake" would be a stretch, in my opinion. Sendoff Spring is almost a crater that was filled with water, which is several meters down another slope.
The pokemon population was nothing unusual in terms of composition at first, Staravia, Bibarel, and some Graveler. That was before Luke's Luxio spotted the Dusclops lurking in the shadows of the trees.
And then there's the noise, or lack thereof to be exact. The surrounding forest is way too quiet for the many pokemon living there, to a degree a concentration of ghost types cannot explain.
We'll enter the cave at the bottom of the lake next.
_._._.
It's no mere cave. The very first thing we encountered was a mural, it's old and dilapidated, the imagery crumbled a long time ago, the words weren't even legible.
We are flying blind, and I don't like it. The fog doesn't help matters.
We'll pick a direction and start exploring, hopefully no teleports we'll be needed to bail us out.
_._._.
It's been about an hour and the layout doesn't make any sense, the rooms seem to be looping and lead back into each other despite the fact we went in the complete opposite direction, it makes no sense at all.
Jack spotted a Ghastly a few minutes before, they are very likely the culprits of this confusion...
_._._._
Hour and a half after entering, I got separated from the group.
I started following a line of murals and before I noticed it everyone else was gone.
It lead me to a room with a single pillar, the images are less faded, still mostly illegible but they seem to depict some sort of prayer or ritual.
The age matches what I read about old Celestica temples that worshipped legendary pokemon, the question is which one?
Something moved nearby. My whole team is out as a precaution.
._._._.
Something is watching me, not the ghost types, it's too heavy a presence for it to be ghost aura concentration.
The paths keep leading to the pillar room, it knows I'm here, it keeps making me come here. Why?
._._._
I found Sharia just as I was about to give up reaching the center, her experience was much the same as mine, except she stirred the local Solrock and Lunatone quarry on accident.
The words at the entrance are bothering me, could it be we had to find the pillars before we walked past 30 rooms? Before 30 minutes passed?
None of it makes sense.
._._._.
Jack showed up, he apparently couldn't reach a pillar room period.
Luke is still missing.
_._._._._
We spent some more time before arriving at the entrance again, Luke showed up through one of the side doors, pale.
Apparently he found three rooms with pillars and managed to catch a glimpse of the central room at the end of a corridor, some sort of amphitheater.
But the way he described it... The moment he tried to approach it some sort of strange feeling overcame him.
In his own words "If I went in there, I don't think I would've come back here" wether he means back alive or something else, he doesn't know.
I'm inclined to believe him, space doesn't seem to work right in here, and this presence... The fact that only one of us caught a look at the center of the labyrinth, it all feels like it was toying with us the entire time, we were allowed to see it and now it's allowing us to leave.
We'll be taking it, ASAP.

>>>>> evolves into Flying/Ghost 'Strigowl'. Vampiric, long neck and clawed wings.
Natu. Xatu with an alternate form. Xatu is much taller than those in other parts of the world.
Teddiursa, Ursarang.

Sableye
Volbeat/Illumise
Cacnea, Cacturne
Seviper variant. Poison/Ground. No scars, tail ends in a club that is hollow and filled with shed scales to make a rattle.

The Bidoof Family
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember when Bidoof was treated as THE most detestable and stupid design in all of Pokemon?? Thankfully, those days seem long gone, and good thing too since Bidoof always seemed pretty cute to me. Bidoof is just a dopey beaver who hasn’t grown in a flat tail yet. It almost resembles a hamster, actually. How can you look at that face and call it the worst thing in this series?? Have some heart.
Bidoof is said to gnaw on wood and even rocks to keep its teeth sharp, fitting with its ability to learn several obstacle-clearing moves like Cut and Rock Smash. The Pokedex even mentions that Bidoof can be described as having ‘nerves of steel,’ and that nothing can perturb it. The description doesn’t clarify this as being due to Bidoof’s ignorance or anything, so the little beaver is really just that courageous. Bidoof deserves more credit than it gets!
youtube
I think some special mention goes to this little official animation made in Bidoof’s honor, giving one member of the species a fun little character arc about wanting to grow stronger and get some recognition as a proper team member. It’s a fun way to give the critter some extra character, as well as being a fun play on how Bidoof is often used by players just to clear overworld obstacles rather than participating in battles.
Tumblr media
Bidoof becomes a proper beaver once it evolves into Bibarel, actually becoming a Normal/Water type. It’s pretty charming if you ask me, and is the first proper evolution to these early game Normal types since Raticate. The only thing that’s off about it is how it gets cartoony white eyes rather than the glassy black ones Bidoof had. I suppose it does make Bibarel look more dopey, but it does unfortunately remove a bit of cutesy charm it would’ve had otherwise.
Something else of note is that the Pokedex describes Bibarel as being pretty sluggish on land, but fast in the water, comparable to that of… Feebas? Was Feebas described as being fast before?? That’s uh, an interesting choice for a comparison.
Score: 3.5/5
Tumblr media
Overall, not a bad pair of beavers by any means.

Distorted Reflections Chapter 3
Ao3 link
1 | 2 | 4 | 5
Chapter text and accompanying pictures are under the cut.
After much delay I have finally updated this
Astrid was sure to never miss any of Cynthia’s broadcast matches, even if it was one where she gave her opponent a massive handicap. For this match, Cynthia was going against someone going for the position of Sinnoh’s junior champion, a position only given to a child who could clear the Elite Four using a designated secondary team not made up entirely of their aces. But, Cynthia used an absolutely brutal strategy of leading with a Bibarel of all things, and then straight in to the one carry over from her real team, Garchomp. The high stamina normal/water type was a truly devious lead, because it often baited the opponent into using an electric type. Astrid couldn’t help but think as she watched the battle how she would use such counters if she was battling her. She cursed the fact that she didn’t try to become a Pokémon trainer sooner, and wished that one day she could be the kind of trainer that could put up a real fight against her, too. But as things stood, she’d never catch up to the literal children who had a good 10 years on her to grow even more.
When Astrid woke up in a bed in the Medical Corps’ office, many people rushed in to see how she was doing and congratulate her on successfully quelling the rampaging noble. Apparently, Kleavor was doing fine now, and the Pearl Clan was very grateful for her assistance. She was a bit shocked to find out it was apparently Volo of all people who had come to her rescue after passing out, treating her wounds and carrying her back to the camp. Maybe she had him all wrong. She'd have to thank him the next time she saw him.
She still felt like shit though, and it would probably be awhile before she could go back out for survey work. While her compensation for the task was generous, she would probably burn through it while recovering. Even her old job would have been less stressful on her body. She wondered if the Construction Corps had any need for an elaborate painting of the things they were constructing.
Lian came in person to thank her, and a similar conversation as with Mai came up about "almighty Sinnoh", and she once again showed a picture on her phone, this time of Palkia. He reacted with similar delight and it gave her a somewhat devious idea. She went to work making woodcuts for prints of images of the gods of Sinnoh. She made one for each of the creation trio and Arceus, mostly making prints for Dialga and Palkia, then set up a booth with a sign that said "Images of the almighty Sinnoh for sale" outside her house, but not putting the images on display until someone asked for one. The Pearl and Diamond Clan members flocked to her, and she handed out the appropriate god to each. Everyone loved them. Astrid wasn't just selling art, she was selling validation and was absolutely making a killing doing so. She'd feel bad about the manipulation, but hey, everyone was happy, so what was there to feel bad about.
“What is this? Do I have some competition in sales now?”
Volo once again had managed to sneak up on her.
“I don't think the Gingko Guild sells art, do they? I don't think I'll affect your income,” she teased.
“Why the art shop?” he asked.
“Well, as you apparently are aware, thank you very much for your assistance by the way, I was injured quite badly in the process of quelling the noble, and as a result have to find some less exertive work to do in the meantime.”
“It was no trouble at all; I’m glad you are recovering well.”
Another customer came up, this time from the Diamond Clan, and she handed him a Dialga print for 500p.
“Interesting little hussle you have here. You made two different prints for maximum customer satisfaction.”
“Yup, do you want in? I could give you some stuff in your bag and mark up for a profit. Or maybe you'd like a print for yourself?”
He laughed. “But I am not from a clan, how will you know which to hand me?”
“Well, for those cases, I have been asking people to tell me about their image of the almighty Sinnoh first... Buuut, I have a different offer for you. If I guess correctly, you have to drop your fake retail personality when we're alone. How about it?”
Volo contemplated that for a minute. She'd get it wrong no matter which of the two he was handed. He smirked. “Well, I came to check on you and hopefully discuss the plates you seem to have obtained from your trials, but I suppose I can play along with your little game first.”
“Excellent. I look forward to having a not fake conversation with you.” She flipped through the prints under the booth.
“You're quite confident you'll guess right.”
“I am.” At least if the resemblance to Cynthia isn't a coincidence. She thought. The champion had infodumped a great deal about her family history and the town of her residence over the years, and Astrid absorbed what she would excitedly tell her about history far more than any school lesson.
If Volo was the ancestor…
He raised an eyebrow suspiciously. “You, Volvo , strike me as a man of higher tastes—”
Astrid pulled out one of the dozen or so prints she made of Arceus. Volo's mask slipped in surprise, betraying what she had in fact picked correctly.
“I got it right, didn't I?” She clapped her hands together gleefully. “I didn't make too many of them because I knew they'd be less popular, but figured a couple people would actually know which Pokémon the almighty Sinnoh actually is.”
It was a bit distressing to Volo she had picked right at all, but even moreso that combined with her "related to a clan" line. “How did you know I would know who Arceus is?”
“Well, for one, you just said you wanted to talk about the plates, which are related to Arceus and not the other three options, so there was a good chance that you knew about it. But, mostly you bear a striking resemblance to someone I knew who was a descendant of the Celestica people who worshipped it.”
Well, she had certainly succeeded in breaking his facade, deal or not. His brain was a bit short-circuited from that revelation, and it took a minute for him to form a response. “Even then, that doesn’t mean I still would be devoted to Arceus.”
“WELL, if you’re disappointed in your god and you’re in need of a god who is more likely to listen…” Astrid went through her prints again and handed him one. “I actually do have a good suggestion for that: my personal preference.”
He probably shouldn’t be surprised after the jacket, to be handed an image of Giratina, but it felt no less ironic for it to be suggested he turn to it in frustration over Arceus when that was exactly what he had done.
“When I was a kid, the Sunnyshore Shinx baseball team hadn’t won in 86 years, so as a joke I asked Giratina to make them win because like, chaos and stuff. And then they won. It granted my stupid request. Honestly I think it’s mostly just bored and lonely and happy for the attention, but having Giratina’s blessing has brought about most of my good fortune! Its protection is why I was able to get away with not having my own Pokémon until recently. “ Astrid said brightly, only for her smile to fade to a dejected frown.
“The tattoos on my arm are supposed to channel its power, and up until the moment before I was brought here it was working well. But since then I haven’t been able to feel its presence at all. When I call out to it now, there’s no response. It wasn’t scary to rush in and stand up to alpha Pokémon, because I thought I would be able to avoid damage due to its support, but no amount of praying has helped, and facing Kleavor was absolutely terrifying. It seems Arceus can grant me the same protection now, but it didn’t freely give it until I cried out that I would fail if it didn’t. Even if I have its blessing instead now, it still feels like Giratina has rejected and abandoned me, and I don’t know why.”
Volo was caught completely off guard by the painfully relatable confession. Especially since he could guess the reason why; he was the one being supported by Giratina. It couldn’t come to her aid because it was with him. This woman he was bitterly jealous of having Arceus’ favor didn’t even appreciate it because in some twisted reflection, wanted the blessing he had instead.
Astrid rummaged through her bag and pulled the plates out so he could look at them. He was jogged from his thoughts by the faint clunk of them being placed on the booth in front of him. “Anyway, you said you wanted to discuss the plates I got right?”
“I see…” he mumbled after picking them up. “There are some letters carved into them. This one says “Where all creation was born, that is the being's place of origin.” It seems to be a phrase from a very old myth. And you got these from the Lords?”
“Yeah, for clearing the alpha out in Deertrack Heights and calming Kleavor’s frenzy.”
“Certainly tasks worthy of recognition!” he said with his usual smile. She gave him a blank look, reminding him that she wouldn't be tolerating his hollow perky attitude anymore. “... Sorry, habit.”
“Regardless, this is very exciting! It’s my guess that you will find more plates like these scattered across Hisui if you continue like this. If we gather them all and decipher the scripts on them, we may uncover something absolutely amazing!” Unlike the last smile, this one seemed to be sincere; it reminded her of Cynthia’s excitement over discovering things about Sinnoh’s history. It was familiar and comforting. Arceus didn’t specifically ask for her to gather the plates, but they seemed to make Volo happy, and she liked seeing authentic smiles from him.
“I’ll get right to work on that then.” She winked at him. “Enjoy your prints!” Volo walked off, still trying to process everything she had just said to him.
Once far outside the village, Volo let the remainder of his fake persona fall and started to laugh hysterically at the absurdity. Giratina curiously crawled out from a small rift to see what he was up to. He faced the draconian spector.
“It seems Arceus’ choice in a chosen one may come back to bite it, because it seems she is quite fond of you.” He handed the print over to the huge Pokémon, who took it from him with its clawed tentacles. She wasn’t wrong about it getting little attention, and depictions of it were rare, it seemed to be pleased by her artwork of it. “I may have to revise our plan for revenge. It seems like a waste to simply use and dispose of her when there is the far more delicious option of turning her against Arceus is on the table. If I’m patient, there’s sure to be an opportunity to take advantage of this.”
Volo still didn’t like her much. Even if the sentiment was similar to his own feelings, he couldn’t help but be angry that she didn’t appreciate Arceus’ gifts he so desperately wanted, and he certainly was not any less jealous then he was before. But it was also true that she essentially was paying for them by suffering the same cursed existence as him, and that was enough he could probably tolerate her enough to interact with her without fake smiles at least. He contemplated the best way to make use of her.
Tumblr media
Once Astrid was healed up enough to get back to business, it wasn’t long before the next major mission fell at her feet. A cute redhead greeted her as she left her house and introduced herself as Arezu of the Diamond Clan. Apparently Ursaluna, another Lord, was frenzied. The warden for it wasn’t present for the meeting with Kamado; she would be meeting with Calaba, Ursaluna’s warden, once she got to the Crimson Mirelands. Rei gave her a quick rundown of the area, and he directed her to the nearby Solaceon Ruins. She immediately noticed the area was a bit of a pain to traverse due to the mucky nature of the swampy ground. Even Wyrdeer was slowed by the poor terrain, which, combined with the lack of cover, was a massive pain for avoiding wild Pokémon.
She entered the dimly lit structure, which was noticeably less ruin-like than the area outside and was littered with broken pillars being swallowed by the mud. She spoke to Calaba, and apparently the reason why she wasn’t in attendance for the meeting was because she didn’t want her help. The old woman didn’t seem to trust her, or the Galaxy Team in general. Once again, she was simply an “outsider”.
‘What am I even here for then? ’ she thought with a sigh. She turned to leave, only to bump right into Volo. He always seemed to suddenly appear near her, just out of nowhere. “I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised to run into you in some ruins huh, Volvo?”
“Ah, smartass! Taking the ‘running into’ part a bit literally, are we?” he said with a smirk that seemed to say ‘ this is the honesty you asked for isn’t it’? Honestly, the snark was still better than the blatant fakeness. “How about you show me the strength that could quell even a frenzied lord?”
“Well, I left the torque wrench at home, so you’ll have to settle for a Pokémon battle.”
Volo’s Togepi had gotten quite a bit stronger, and he had the new addition of a Gible (the realization that she would in the future likely be facing a Garchomp as formidable as Cynthia’s made Astrid sweat a bit). But she had spent weeks preparing for Kleavor, truly putting that backstrike to good use on Alpha Pokémon and taking out ones a good ten or more levels above her team to gain experience rapidly. The Gible did successfully defeat her Quilava, but was subsequently 1HKO’d by the Alpha Bibarel she caught.
“Still no match for you, it seems…” Volo said with a sigh, seemingly a bit disappointed. “Such prodigious strength. Now, let me just heal up your Pokémon… Now, I think that settles it. I must ask your help in retrieving the stolen Wall Fragment. With your skill, it should be a cinch!”
“Stolen Wall Fragment?”
“Yes, exactly! Some bandits pillaged the Solaceon Ruins and made off with a fragment of the wall engravings! Have you not heard of the notorious Miss Fortunes? They’re a trio of bandits that have even hit us Ginkgo Guild merchants more than a few times! Not the kind of regulars I like to have, let me tell you! Mistress Cabala is doing everything she can to regain the fragment, but at 99 years old... It's a bit hard for her to chase leads all over the place. So what do you say, kind madam? Why not help find the fragment for the Warden? Oh—naturally I’ll be happy to lend you a hand! Those sisters swiped my wares, too, and I’m no Ginkgo Guild merchant if I take that lying down! And far be it from me to let them just get away with vandalizing the precious ruins of this region! You know, I did see the remains of a campfire near the Mirelands camp. Perhaps worth checking out?”
Ninety nine? Geez, given that, she was in amazing shape. Astrid had run out of grandparents by her mid-teens and couldn’t even imagine lasting that long, nevermind being able to hold a position like Clan Warden in the harsh environment of Hisui. She glanced over at the fractured wall. “Sounds good, let's go.”
He blinked in surprise. “Both of us?”
“You said they took stuff from you too, right? Why wouldn’t you come? You want them back, right?”
“Ah yes, I suppose…” Volo wasn’t actually expecting to be invited, but he couldn’t really think of an excuse not to go with her. He was planning on just having her do the dirty work for him, and sitting back and waiting for her to bring it back.
“So, what does this Wall Fragment look like?”
“Just a chunk of stone with some ancient writing on it. Without it the plaque is incomplete and illegible.” Astrid thought about flipping through textbooks full of images of damaged unreadable ruins. Yeah, probably would cause a lot of future frustration. “Is something like that really even valuable to anyone but the keeper of the ruins?”
“Well, I’d say all ruins are valuable!” he said with a cheery look, this time seemingly authentic. “But yes, it’s written in ancient language, so even if they had managed to take the whole thing, it’s likely to be indecipherable to most people. A small chunk of the greater message wouldn’t be terribly valuable for a collector of such things.” He stopped, then motioned over to a stretch of land between the nearby river bank and the base camp. “The camp was up ahead here.”
They walked up to the campfire to look around.
“Now who might you be? Not some stray travelers, from the looks of you.”
They turned around to see three women in torn clothing. “There’s only one reason people go poking around here in the middle of nowhere. You’re after us three, aren’t you?!” said one that bore a striking resemblance to a gym leader from Astrid’s time.
They introduced themselves as Charm, Clover, and Coin. Coin and Clover sent out their Pokémon, a Toxicroak and Abomasnow respectively.
“You take the Toxicroak and I’ll take the Abomasnow?” “A double battle? How unconventional...” Volo said with a smirk. “Not where I’m from.” Astrid grinned back.
It seemed that the technique-based moves used here made it easier to avoid splash damage to a teammate. Cynder and Gible easily dispatched both enemy Pokémon with solid Flame Wheel and Bulldoze attacks.
“Hmph; the Galaxy Team continues to spoil things for me, even after I’ve left. Take the blasted fragment and go. Just leave us alone!” Coin said with a huff.
“The weird writing on it made us think the stupid thing was some kind of treasure. But it turned out to be a worthless slab of junk. Tch! All that effort for nothing!” Clover added in a spitting tone, clearly annoyed.
“Tell me— why were you even seeking us out? What sent you on this path?” Charm asked Astrid.
“Because trust is something earned through action, not simply through promises that could come up empty.” Her answer seemed to surprise everyone, even Volo.
“Goodness, how selfless of you — to go so far out of your way for the sake of another. Not all of us have the luxury of offering such unrelenting kindness to strangers. For some of us, simply surviving another day takes all that we have. And I’ve got scores to settle with the Galaxy Team… Which now includes you! Remember what those ancient verses tell us… ’Why is it, on days of spring, beneath the soft caress of the sun, the blossoms tremble and fall, spirits lashed by uncertainty?’ Your days are numbered, Galaxy fool.” And with that the three of them ran off.
“Ancient verses?” Astrid asked quizzically.
“Ah, yes — there are a series of old poems that have been occasionally unearthed about Hisui; that may possibly be what she refers to?” Volo replied. He seemed to know more than he was saying, but she decided not to pick at that for now.
“Oh, interesting. Maybe I’ll come across them at some point.” Astrid picked up the Wall Fragment and looked at the engraving. “‘OUCH LIVES.’ Wow, profound. Also, really appropriate thing to be carried around by people called the ‘Miss Fortunes’ I guess.”
“...You can read the ancient language?” He had not been expecting that.
“Passably. I struggle with remembering a couple of letters, but can generally guess based on context.”
“You sure are full of surprises.”
“I try not to be too boring.” Astrid stuffed the fragment back in her bag. “Time to head back and give this to Calaba.”
“Good luck. I’m well aware of Calaba’s reputation—they say she’s stubborn, too old-fashioned and so on…But she’s given the Pearl Clan all she has, ever since she was young. She lived her prime years here in the Hisui region, trusting in the guidance of the almighty Sinnoh. I don’t think she hates the Diamond Clan or the Galaxy Team—rather, I think she simply loves the Pearl Clan very, very much.”
It felt inappropriate to outright ask, but she wondered if Volo had similar feelings about the clans in Hisui himself. “It’s hard to trust the guidance of a god that never actually gives you meaningful feedback, but I guess that’s something we all have in common huh?”
“I suppose so. Anyway, I do hope you’re able to calm Ursaluna’s frenzy, Astrid! A raging Pokémon in the area definitely isn’t good for business, I assure you.”
“See you around! It was fun. We make a good team, don’t you think? I’m lucky to have such a reliable rival.” She said with a smile. “I’ll tell you if I come across anything else interesting.”
“Thank you; it’s been a pleasure.” That was surprisingly not a lie. He didn’t get a chance to simply chat about his interests much like today. We make a good team don’t you think? Yes, they did. Perhaps a team to bring the world to its knees in the future. All he had to do was wield her like his Pokémon. He was delighted by the thought. First he must find more Pokémon, though. With her vast selection, he needed a full, strong team to hold his own against her own might. Otherwise, he may end up the one being controlled, and that simply would not do.
Astrid returned to Calaba to give her the fragment, the old woman was surprised and asked why she’d go out of the way for a stranger, and honestly she didn’t have a good answer, just that it felt like the right thing to do. It hardly felt like “out of the way” when her main overall job was meticulously searching for and cataloging Pokémon.
Calaba returned the fragment to the wall. “Let me read what it says. ‘All lives touch other lives to create something anew and alive..’”
“That makes so much more sense than ‘ouch lives’”
Calaba laughed. “Oh you can read it too? I guess the small piece made its own message. ‘Ouch’ indeed. I suppose it means people helping each other, like you helped retrieve the fragment. I’ve read this passage many, many times, but this is the first time I’ve really understood what it means. Maybe this is the almighty Sinnoh’s guidance?”
She asked Astrid her name, and asked her to help with Ursaluna, telling her to meet her at the sludge mound when ready.
Calaba was waiting in the center of the arena with her biberal, and pulled out her flute to summon Ursaluna. Astrid was surprised when it waited patiently for her to send out her Pokémon, then engaged in a fairly normal battle. Calaba gave it some foul smelling medication and it seemed fine.
But it was strange, he didn’t seem frenzied to begin with, maybe just a bit agitated, no glow or anything. Had Arezu been deceiving them somehow? Calaba had Astrid play her flute for Ursaluna to allow it to come when called as well, and was gifted the earth plate. Ursaluna was a lot slower than Wyrdeer, but could find buried objects underground.
When Astrid got back to the village, Adaman and Beni were waiting in Kamado’s office discussing the other lord of the mirlands, Lilligant, also being frenzied, and Arezu hiding it.It was decided she should search for Arezu with Ursaluna, and then deal with Lilligant as with kleavor. Apparently she should follow the smell of Beni’s cooking to her.
It took a bit of time to catch her scent, but eventually Astrid was able to track her down near the Diamond settlement. It was a good thing she was easy to track, as she was injured while trying to make balms for Lilligant. She confessed that Ursaluna had gotten some pollen from Lilligant on it, which was the cause of the not quite frenzied state it was in. Calaba took the job of caring for her as Astrid went to face the lord.
Lilligant was tough, sending out waves of energy that could knock you off your feet, but with Arceus’ protection it wasn’t nearly as bad as dealing with kleavor. Astrid was able to keep her distance until openings to send her Pokémon in. She only ended up taking minor damage that would probably only require a day or two of recovery. She started heading towards camp. It was a nice night, a full moon lighting the sky. The stars here with no light pollution were beautiful, an endless expanse of twinkling pinpricks against the deep black backdrop… She would have to keep her eye out for murkrow in the area though, given they’d blend right into it.
“I see you managed to stay conscious this time.”
Astrid spun around to see Volo. “Did you come to rescue me again? How sweet.”
“I couldn’t just let my favorite customer be stomped to death now could I?”
“You know you haven’t even sold me anything before.” She teased.
“We still don’t know what’s causing the lightning that frenzies these Pokémon… But you just keep rescuing them, without even a hint of trepidation despite being so badly injured last time!”
She snorted. “It helped I wasn’t taking direct hits this time. It felt a lot easier.”
“At this rate you might even change the entire course of history here in Hisui…I definitely want to be in the good books of someone like that.”
Her mind went to Cynthia and wondered how much her interactions with Volo would effect her… Monopolizing too much of his attention might threaten her existence entirely. But honestly now that he had dropped the fake smiles she enjoyed spending time with him enough that it would be hard to resist taking opportunities to capture it.
“I’m guessing you want to see the plate I just got” He nodded eagerly and she handed it over.
“The power of the Plates are shared among Pokémon.” He read. “I wonder if this refers to Pokémon typing.”
“It could also be that they are literally sharing the plates the way they are with me, but I think you’re right about that and that carrying these plates probably enhance those abilities.” She was pretty sure Cynthia had at least one and gave it to her Pokémon as a hold item for that reason.
“Well if it was literal then would that make you a Pokémon?”
“Yeah actually, I’ve been meaning to tell you, I’m actually a Zoroark in disguise. Don’t tell anyone, they might fire me from the corps and take my Pokémon license away.”
Volo smirked wickedly.. “Maybe I should try to catch you in a ball and add you to my team so I can just collect the Plates myself.”
“Oh? So you'll fight the nobles yourse-” Astrid responded in a laughing tone before grabbing Volo and pulling him behind some bushes. “PINK!”
He was utterly confused by her exclamation until she motioned for him to turn around. Cloudpool Ridge had a dense enough population of murkrow to often have an alpha present, and today was no different… Except this Honchkrow was a brilliant shade of pink instead of the usual black, standing out in jarring contrast to the more muted hues of the foliage around it. He was vaguely aware of alternative colorization in Pokémon, but never saw something so drastic before.
“I am going to catch it.”
“You’re going to catch the alpha? Just like that?”
“YES.”
Volo sighed. “You’re insane, and I’m not going near the thing, my Pokémon can’t handle it. Can yours even?”
Astrid rolled her eyes. “It’s fine, I will just use-” She mimicked him and wagged her finger in his face. “Your special backstrike technique.”
Volo gave her an annoyed glare. “Arceus clearly has questionable judgment granting its blessing to you.”
She waved him off to go sneak up on the Honchkrow. “Sure does! It might end up having regrets about that.”
He took a moment to process the exchange. He really shouldn’t have said that outloud. He could potentially pass it off as being excessively belligerent in response to her demanding he stop forcing politeness, but there was still a major risk that if she was seeing through his smile that she could also recognize his sincere distaste of her. But he never expected her to agree .
He watched as Astrid threw some berries out from a hiding place in the grass, luring the Pokémon over. Closer, closer, she waited for it to turn to head back to its original position before nailing it with a pokeball.
“Lev! Thunder wave!” The luxray obliged, the stunned bird staggered in midair. “Thunder fang!” The honchkrow shook itself from the initial stunning from the backstrike, but the paralysis effectively clipped its wings enough to make it too slow to react. “One more time! Agile style!” The second the attack landed Astrid threw the ball, the puff of smoke came out to signal the successful capture.
“Who’s my little catch MVP, That’s right! It’s you!” She said fluffing up Lev’s mane. The Pokémon purred and nuzzled her. “You did great buddy!”
Volo walked up to them. “Congratulations, you caught your fluorescent bird, are you satisfied?”
She beamed brighter than the Honchkrow. “Yes, thank you.” She returned Lev to his ball and got up and brushed herself off.  “Ok lets go.”
He looked back at her. Behind her the sun was rising casting the sky in color similar to the freshly caught Pokémon. Then the flowering bush behind her moved… and stood up. It wasn’t a bush after all, but a groggy alpha roserade. He went pale.
Astrid noticed his face. “What’s wrong?” The Pokémon behind her roared, knocking her off her feet to the ground stunning her. Volo grabbed her, she wasn’t exactly light, but far less to carry then his stupid merchant’s bag. He scooped her up and ran towards the diamond settlement.
Once they were safely away, Volo slumped down to the ground and groaned. He let her slip from his arms into his lap and pushed his already half falling off hat off his head as he raked his fingers through his hair before holding his head in his hand and exasperatedly saying. “I can’t believe there were two alphas there. You’ll be the death of me with these antics.”
“Weren’t you literally saying you were going to shove me in a pokeball and collect the plates yourself when I spotted the Honchkrow? How were you planning to get them from the lords if you can’t handle normal alphas?” She teased.
He glared again. “Not everyone is granted Arceus’ blessing and protection.” He spat out angrily.
It was becoming pretty obvious what the source of the negative feelings he had been hiding behind that smile of his were, that was the second time he snapped at her over Arceus’s blessing. It reminded her of a wounded animal, lashing out when someone got too close to its injury. She couldn’t really blame him for being jealous, even with said blessing she still couldn’t help but feel hurt by Giratina’s silence. Was there anything she could do to help him?
“Aww, don’t be like that. Why don’t I draw the runes onto your arm too and see if it works for you too?”
This suggestion seemed to knock him senseless for a moment, dispelling his bitterness with shock, before he attempted to laugh it off. “I doubt Arceus would have any interest in helping me, so I’d probably just die.”
“Come on, let’s give it a shot. We’ll test first with something less dangerous like one of our own Pokémon” She picked up his hat and put it back on him lightly, taking the excuse to run her thumb over his cheek. “I won’t let you get hurt, I promise.”
Volo didn’t understand. His mask was off, He was responding to her with snark. Why was she still acting this way? If anything she was acting kinder than she had before it had been dropped. Was she that dense? Was this a trap? Had she figured out his long term ill intentions and was trying to get rid of him? No, that really didn’t make sense. All he had let slip so far was his jealousy. Maybe she was trying to butter him up for her to try to manipulate him .
He averted his eyes before mumbling. “I’ll think about it…” She smiled in response, before slipping off his lap and holding her hand out to help him up. He took it.
“Well, I should get going and report my success to the Professor back at the base camp. Sorry for putting you in danger again…” She said with a bit of guilt.
He sighed. “Well, I suppose I’d want to be in the good books of someone crazy enough to take such actions anyway.” He smiled a bit, looking more tired than happy. “Stay in touch, friend.” He gave a light tap of his fist on her arm before leaving again.
As she watched him go, Astrid couldn’t help but wish just a bit, that she could have him along for the ride more often.

This is the second time I’ve speculated about Pachirisu’s typing :3 was it going to be Electric-Ice? Sinnoh really loved it’s Ice types! Snover and Abomasnow are, in my opinion, really iconic Pokémon of Sinnoh. They don’t showcase the introduction of variants like Shellos, or the new evolutions such as Togekiss and Roserade.
But the snowy parts of Sinnoh were very important! I don’t remember snow in any previous games. And there was a large part of the map dedicated to snow. Multiple routes, and an entire town!
Future games sometimes attempt to imitate the sincere biome, but they always feel cramped. Examples found in Kalos: the two icy towns, one of which seems very out of place at the same altitude and latitude as the desert; the other literally just a product of the ice gym producing so much coldness that the town froze.
I’m addition to Snover’s line, we also see a new Ice-type eevolution, Sneasel’s evolution Weavil, Snorunt’s evolution Froslass, and Piloswine’s evolution Mamoswine!
Sinnoh also featured several other distinct biomes. The swamp is very memorable! The coasts were highlighted by several port cities. And the center mountain range played an important role in the plot and the development of location-based variants.
The first most iconic biome is surely the mountain. It plays too critical of a role in the main storyline. The altitude introduced fog. The height difference among routes allowed for stunning visuals and novel route design. The swamp and coasts are tied, and come after the snowy lands. The swamp was a uniquely fun and treacherous biome, reminiscent of the Hoenn Desert with it’s biome-specific hazards and combination of the feel of an open-world area with a winding, labyrinthine pacing.
Many of Sinnoh’s new Pokémon are featured here, including Croagunk, Shellos, Krikitune, Buizel, Bibarel, Burmy, Cherubi, and Combee. Unlike the coastal towns, an appropriate focus is given to the swamps. The coasts of Sinnoh feel underwhelming, compared to the vast coastal region of Hoenn, and the expansion of Kanto coastal regions of the Sevii Islands. Compared to the ferry rides of other regions, Sinnoh’s coasts are not quite as memorable.
Thus! I think maybe Pachirisu was intended to be part Ice! It could have had a Pokédex entry such as, “It forwent hibernation in order to survive the endless snow of northern Sinnoh. It’s Ice-typing let’s it stay active in even the coldest temperatures.”
My only real argument is: it is white and blue! :0 Is that a bad argument? Maybe! Yellow is the most remembered color for Electric types, but plenty have been blue.
Magnemite (originally only Electric type) set the standard for including white/grey/blue tones in electric types. Chinchou’s blueness could be attributed to its water typing, though Plusle and Manectric firmly add blue to the electric color pallet. Pokémon such as Mareep, Flaffy, and Rotom exhibit the way blue is a common accent color. Shinx’s line firmly establishes blue as an electric color, more than any other Pokémon.
However, there’s hardly an ice type without blue. And there isnt a single Ice-Electric type by then. You know they love added new pairings! And pairing it with a Pikachu-esque rodent/lagomorph? The squirrel a great choice! I mean, voles are an option… But those aren’t Pikachu-esque enough, yknow?
Anyways! It’s also white! That’s uncommon in electric types. Voltorb, Electrode, and Flaffy have important uses of the color white. But otherwise, the color is used more in Normal types, Ice types, and even Water types.
I’m just sayin. Imagine you are headed to the snowy city. You headbutt a tree. And a Pachirisu falls out! Hah. Adorable. It’s got moves like Discharge, Charm, Icy Wind, and Double Team. It can take out Flying, Ground, Water, Dragon, and Grass! It could feature in Double Battles with Helping Hand and Thunderbolt. Or, paired with a Pokémon with Rain Dance, it could have 100 accuracy with Thunder while still countering Ground, Grass, and Dragon due to the Ice typing.
:3 I had a lot of fun pondering over this! It was inspired by a color-swap I did with Pikachu and Pachirisu that made me realize it was rather wintery-themed for an Electric. :)

Yo
So uh
A few weeks ago me and my friend made a pokemon au thing for Sv and uh
my friend suggested for Sv it could be 2 different routes (one route is the Svs the other route is the Eves)
Here's the gym leaders with the teams bc idk what else to post-
Some of these pokemon choices are a little weird mainly because we thought it'd be funny and some choices were made bc of other characters/past/detail about character/ect.
The (e) stands for evolution (like the battles in Sword and Shield so like they have full teams [which also is connected to "|" that separates the pokemon] so yeah-)
So
Yeah
Choice 1
The Ghost Gym Leader: Kuro
Team: Mimikyu and Froslass | Gendar, Chandelure, Dragapult and Hisuian Zoroark
Reasoning: Mimikyu bc I personally think they'd be good friends, Froslass bc my friend suggested it-, Gengar I forgot why-, Chandelure for... Obvious reasons.... (I'm sorry Kuro that was my fault-), Dragapult I don't remember-, and Hisuian Zoroark I also don't remember-
The Flying Gym Leader: Hugh
Team: Noibat(e) and Zubat(e) | Noctowl, Corviknight, Staraptor and Gyarados
Reasoning: both bats are obvious, Noctowl idk my friend said so-, the rest because I think it's funny to give him massive ass pokemon
The Dark Gym Leader: JeJe
Team: Seviper, Houndoom and Umbreon | Mighteyena, Midnight Lycanroc and Garchomp
reasoning: IK SEVIPER ISN'T DARK IT'S POISON BUT ME AND MY FRIEND SAID "no one's gonna know" (but now I'm posting this onto the internet for people to see so-) SO HUSH, Houndoom I don't remember-, Umbreon was bc of me-, and the rest were bc of my friend-
The Psychic Gym Leader: Freya
Team: Gardevoir, Espeon and Female Meowstic | Alakazam, Delphox and Persian
Reasoning: Gardevoir because I said so, Espeon bc purple and I wanted to give all of them Eeveelutions-, Meowstic just fit her look, Alakazam bc I don't remember-, Delphox is a witch(I'm pretty sure it is-), and Persian bc Persian is pretty
The Electric Gym Leader: Hyde
Team: Boltund, Jolteon, Luxray, and Raichu | Togedemaru and Manectric
reasoning: energetic/rude at first/emo/hj pokemon oh also Togedemaru is a hedgehog
The Fighting Gym Leader: Ildio
Team: Machomp, Hawlucha, Hitmonchan and Pangoro | Lucario and Blaziken
reasoning: they're buff/strong pokemon (I don't know why Hawlucha is there-)
The Fairy Gym Leader: Lily
Team: Sylveon, Florges, Hatterene and Alcremie | Gardevoir and Clefable
Reasoning: slyveon is pretty explainable (from what I said last time), and most of the pokemon are pretty or sweet (literally or like personality wise-)
The Grass Gym Leader: Tsubaki
Team: Sudowoodo, Venusaur, Phantump (e), Lilligant and Leafeon | Gourgeist
Reasoning: Sudowoodo because we thought it was fucking hilarious, Venusaur because flower, Phantump bc dead ghost child, Lilligant bc flower, Leafeon because Sakuya (just turn the leaf hair to the side and it Sakuya but as a Pokemon-) and Gourgeist because ghost plant and like it curses people (doesn't Tsubaki say he was gonna curse everyone and like does that spell thing with the lanterns-)
Choice 2
The Normal Gym Leader: Mahiru
Team: Buneary(e) and Skitty(e) | Kangskhan, Snorlax, Furret, and Furfrou
Reasoning: because my friend said so- , Kangskhan bc it's a mom, Snorlax bc Kuro, and the rest bc my friend said so-
The Water Gym Leader: Tetsu
Team: Feebas(e) and Wailmer(e) | Bibarel, Vaporeon, Floatzel and Gastradon (East)
Reasoning: he works at a hotsprings what do you expect?
The Ground Gym Leader: Mikuni
Team: Lycanroc, Diglett(e) and Stunfisk | Sandaconda, Sandslash and Marowak
Reasoning: I don't remember why tf we gave him ground
The Electric Gym Leader: Izuna
Team: Dedenne, Charjabug(e) and Manectric | Ampharos, Electivire, Rotom
Reasoning: she's an inventor Dedenne bc it's small and cute and could probably help her, Charjabug bc charge, Manectric bc Freya, and the other 2 I don't know-, and Rotom bc it posses stuff
The Fighting Gym Leader: Licht
Team: Lucario, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop | Primeape and Bewear
Reasoning: first 4 I don't remember know aside from Hitmonlee bc kicking, Primeape bc it's always angry (idk aside from that and I'm the one who added it-) and Bewear bc it's cute and deadly
The Fire Gym Leader: Niccolo
Team: Hisuian Arcanine, Ninetales, Rapidash and Talonflame | Emboar and Turtonator
Reasoning: I don't know why we gave him fire H Arcanine bc it's cool and fits Nicco's aesthetic (sorta-), Rapidash bc my friend suggested it-, Talonflame fits (sorta-), Emboar bc Ildio, and Turtonator because my friend suggested it again-
The Psychic Gym Leader: Misono
Team: Galarian Rapidash, Galarian Slowking, Male Indeedee and Female Indeedee | Reuniclus and Exeggutor
Reasoning: psychic just fits Galarian Rapidash looks regale (is that the right word?) and just fits, G Slowking also fit with the whole king and purple thing, both Indeedees bc Lily and he's rich- the last two was you guessed it.. My friend suggested it-
The Dark Gym Leader: Sakuya
ik he's not an eve but SHHHHH
Team: Midnight Lycanroc, Absol, Zoroark, Thievul and Weavile | Honchkrow
Reasoning: M Lycanroc bc Sakuya's emo/hj, Absol bc he told Misono about Tsubaki's plan (also just bc it fits-) , and the rest I honestly don't remember and my friend suggested it too-
Yeah
There's alot more characters added but I only finished typing out the gym leaders so there will probably be a part 2-

any tips on raising a bidoof or a spheal?
Hi!
Both of those Pokémon are very easy to raise and keep, as they are very simple little critters that don't require nearly as much as others would. On top of that, neither of them are very intelligent, so there's not a lot to worry about with them either. I know that sounds mean, but it's the truth! Anyways.
Bidoof can be fed most normal type feeds, as they are not picky about what enters their stomachs as long as it's nutritous and helps them feel full. You can also feed them plant based water-type feed as they grow, due to the fact that they evolve into Bibarel.
One of the big things about Bidoof, and Bibarel by extension, is that they will constantly need things to chew on because their teeth are constantly growing. I advise getting firewood from the market for them to chew on so they don't turn their gnawing teeth onto your furniture, or worse, your home's support beams.
When it comes to grooming a Bidoof, there really aren't any methods that are simpler. Just use a soft bristle brush to brush out any dirt or debris that the Bidoof can't get off itself when in water. They are typically hygenic Pokémon, so you really don't need to step in to bathe them more than once every two weeks or so. When you do bathe them, though, use gentle Pokémon Approved shampoo. (We have some in the Daycare that you can buy for 10 dollars.)
Spheal, on the other hand, is a lot less structurally dangerous. The only risk is that they roll everywhere they go, and they may bump into walls or shins, causing very minor impact damage at best to whatever they hit. I wouldn't worry though, they're very soft and squishy.
As Spheal, and their subsequent evolutions, are all Ice and Water type, they do need certain accomodations to live happily. They need cool air and colder water to remain comfortable, and too much heat can result in injury to them. I suggest always keeping a few gallons of water in your fridge and a few trays of ice in your freezer if you live in semi-warm environments. You can also keep their fish based ice-type feed in your freezer, or their fish based water-type feed in your fridge.
For enrichment, Spheal enjoy rolling, so I would suggest taking a Spheal out to a tall hill during the winter months and just letting the little orb roll down it. Or, you could allow children to roll it around like a snowball in the snow, since Spheal are good with kids.
Finally; grooming Spheals. It's easy. The have special coats that sort of wick away dirt and dust, keeping their skin clean and free from irritants. Worst case scenario, use a soft bristle brush and very gently brush away anything that the Spheal can't get off itself, but don't use soap or shampoo, as it could mess up the special waterproofing oils that Spheals produce naturally.

Somehow I had forgotten that bibarel was a water type and not just a normal one. I do like the idea that Iscan has an qwilfish, the fact that it has such a prickly body and personality matches the irony of him having a ghost type noble when he's scared of them. Cyndaquil being used as a portable heater, probably pretty much from the start since nights seem like they'd be colder in the fieldlands than they are in the mirelands, is so cute. It's gonna be a lifesaver once she gets up where it's cold. The real reason the go to the icelands last and the highlands second to last is that she wants to put off being that cold for as long as possible and they have no reason not to accommodate her lol.
She's so eager to do hair care for pretty much anyone that when she sees him start brushing Sneasler, who is very happy to sit there and let him groom her, she offers to help. She's surprised by how much she likes it, and how much the all of the pokemon like it because so few people are willing to let her play with their hair. Lol, the Ginkgo Guild spreads the word about all the neat things they're doing in this place called Jubilife and suddenly they've got an influx of tourists and have to expand.
Makes me wonder if being around Lilligant would make him feel a kind of loss and nostalgia, or if he'd unconsciously start to mirror that, becoming a bit more talkative and getting a little of his pep back. I've seen it a lot before where people have Sneasler as not really being interested in battling, so I think it'd be fun if Lilligant loved fighting, but because she's a noble she doesn't really get to. But Ingo and his team are more than happy to! And as that's the time when he's at his most lively I can see that being when they most mirror and feed off each other's enthusiasm.
Pokemon rabies! Good going Volo, you introduced rabies into Hisui. That'd actually be kinda cool to explore as part of the whole "seek out all pokemon" thing, since the one surefire way to break it is to catch them. Arceus was being literal, seek out and capture all of the pokemon in Hisui in order to break any traces of the frenzy "virus" growing in them. It'd be very catch-and-release, like feral cat neutering programs lol, though they'd have to find a way to tag them to know they were already caught before.
From the original premise you wrote, Giratina tearing rifts open all over the place is continually breaking the hall of origin, which sounds really bad. It probably means that Arceus couldn't leave even if it wanted to, because it has to be there it mend things as they break. So stopping the distortions would be a priority, but the problem is how they would know that. Ingo also needs to go to the hall of origin to retrieve the part of him that's stuck there lol. So in order of urgency: 1. Close the distortions and find out what's causing them to stop them for good, 2. Catch all pokemon to stop the spread of the frenzy (if we go that route). 3. Get Ingo and the protag into the hall of origin to fight Arceus, get Ingo's missing piece back, and secure them a way back home. Not sure how we could fit the massive mass outbreaks into this, though it'd be nice if we could. If we wanted to deviate even more from canon, we could also say that the distortion bubbles, while not as common as they are in the game, are worse because not all of the pokemon leave when it closes, so now you have disoriented, violent, infected, potentially non-native pokemon running around wherever they were. But that might be too much.
YEAH shkjshjkh everyone else is like no offense ingo but your home/clan's home is too cold and it sucks and we don't want to go there until we absolutely have to. and he's like no that's fair i get it it's my least favorite thing about it also. and yeah, i think even the fieldlands are fairly chilly depending on the season so arezu Will very much appreciate cyndaquil. maybe that's even why she was given it in the first place? bc she's just like, cold constantly?
kamado's so mad he's like STOP BRINGING POKEMON INTO THE VILLAGE but nobody else is listening, sorry, they've been lured by the siren song of income. jubilife is The pokemon destination now and he can't stop it. but yeah, pokemon do probably enjoy being groomed i think! especially ones who can't do it as well themselves and don't already have a trainer/warden to baby them. so arezu will have plenty of happy customers
i wonder if it's more like, seeing her like that suddenly makes him hyperaware/self-conscious of how much he's changed? bc like, yeah, a lot of it was in that initial fall, but then a lot of it is also just from existing in hisui and being like... adrift without much human contact and vaguely purposeless. and also the decay from the hall of origin, that's not helping. but then he sees lilligant and has that moment of oh, that used to be me, and now has to confront that he's... not. anymore. and that's probably not a great sign. sneasler not being into battle is, interesting? if anything i feel like it'd be the opposite and battling is like, the only part of being a noble she is vaguely interested in. but still, i think calaba says lilligant's been looking forward to another battle if you rechallenge her in the postgame (i think?) so it would make sense that she enjoys battling, too
yeah lol. and then it's not even that the nobles are specially targeted, it's just that they're susceptible, so all it takes is a bad exposure and suddenly they're falling prey to it, too... mmm i do like that, just vibeswise. and then lol, yeah. have them wear the pokeballs like the bell collars for cats
ooh, what if, to expand on what you said—the distortions aren't just leaving pokemon behind, but they actually won't close at all until the protagonist does something to them? maybe they need to catch all the pokemon inside them or like. point the arc phone at it. or something. point is, it mirrors the breaking/mending of the hall of origin bc hisui itself is also getting the constant rift cracks. and maybe part of the protag's job here was to fix them, bc if they accumulate too long, reality will start to fray and it'll mirror into the hall of origin and the whole edifice will start to collapse. so instead of just defrenzying the noble of a region and leaving, job done, they're constantly running around between all the regions as the rifts appear and resealing them? idk, it's a thought

Saiki K x Pokemon AU
(A compilation post)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These designs are free real estate if anyone wants to play with them!
And of course after posting all of these, I realized which Pokemon would fit well for Hii and Satou:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of the species explanations under the cut:
There aren't many luck-themed Pokemon, so the pickings were slim for Hii. While Togepi is generally known to be happy and give good luck, there is an evil Togepi in the anime, so it's not inconceivable for there to be Togepi with bad luck in their shell for some reason. Along with the ability "Super (Bad) Luck", a prematurely cracked shell, and some warning symbol markings, poor Togehii is doing her best in a tough world!
Satou was surprisingly tricky to decide, but I finally settled on Bidoof. The most common types of Pokemon, by number of species, are water and normal, and Bidoof evolves into the normal/water type Bibarel. Picking a water type would have made Satou stand out in a land-based Pokemon school, and honestly I would feel bad about making him Rattata. Bidoof is the sort of "Route 1", very boring Pokemon that is a capable HM user but not interesting for anything else. Satou's design is so unremarkable that it doesn't even make sense to try to draw a special Satou Bidoof, so I just slapped some official artwork on there as a joke.
While the Pokemon that comes to mind first for Saiki is definitely Mewtwo, after looking on Bulbapedia at the lore, I thought Type:Null and Silvally fit the bill a little better. In the anime, Gladion's Silvally was fitted with the restricting helmet after wildly attacking an Ultra Beast to protect his sister. Similarly, Saiki was at full strength as a child, lost control when protecting Akechi from the bullies, has his powers reduced with the limiters and glasses, and then accepts his full power in the post canon chapters, specifically for protecting all of his family and friends from the meteor. Also, the plethora of abilities enabled by the RKS memory system is a good analogue for Saiki's many, many powers.
Kaido's chihuahua guardian means that his Pokemon form absolutely has to be some sort of small, yappy dog. Rockruff fits the bill as one of the weakest rock types in the game, and it's described as being easy-going at first, then becoming hard-to-handle as it grows up. Its messy fur and potential to grow up into an edgy-looking wolf makes it spot-on for our favorite chuuni!
Akechi is a tough one, because he's not actually psychic. I thought maybe he ought to be a normal type, but then I remembered how many dark type moves involve yelling at the opponent, thinking lots of thoughts at the opponent, and otherwise being aggressively wordy. Absol has the unfortunate reputation of causing disasters even though it really just has good intuition. Similarly, Akechi was incorrectly believed to have psychic powers.
For Kusuke, I thought another artificially-created Pokemon would be appropriate, and the corrupted and powerful Porygon-Z is a good match. It's supposed to have dimension-hopping abilities, and Kusuke was able to create a time machine in at least one timeline, as well as a warp portal in the manga.
Nendo matches easily with Skuntank in terms of looks, since it has a built-in mohawk and its face is already butt-like and unpleasant to look at. This is certainly a Pokemon anyone would immediately think is up to no good. And Skuntank aren't very intelligent either, since their Pokedex entry states that they're confounded by attacks from above.
For Aiura, I initially thought of Lucario because of its connection with auras. But it's not a psychic type, even though it clearly has a lot of psychic abilities, so it wasn't quite right. Gardevoir is the obvious "girly psychic" choice but Aiura's bright and bubbly vibe doesn't quite match. Meloetta is an obscure choice, but the typing fits, the look matches, and she both dances and doles out furious kicks as needed, just like Aiura.
Toritsuka has ghost powers and is a toxic problematic fave, so clearly the poison/ghost Gengar is the perfect choice.
Mera as a Morpeko is an easy match, considering that she can chew through metal bars, goes feral at a moment's notice, and is always hungry.
Teruhashi is a tough one. Gardevoir jumps to mind again, and Teruhashi does project that sort of serene grace. However, the fact that she literally has what could be described as a cult following points to a mythical Pokemon at the least. And Diancie has the fairy typing that matches Teruhashi's personality, plus it literally sparkles with diamonds. Diancie is also essentially a special version of the mundane Carbink, so it matches Teruhashi being an extraordinarily beautiful and talented but otherwise ordinary girl. And Diancie's mega evolution looks a lot like Teruhashi's Otohime costume in the school play!
Chiyo is definitely one of the normal and or fairy "pink and girly" Pokemon. Clefairy fits extra well because of its weird moon rituals, which calls back to Chiyo's later interest in the occult. Funnily enough, Clefairy's Japanese name is "Pippi" and Aiura's nickname for Chiyo is "Chiyopipi"!
Aren is another tough one to pick. He's definitely some sort of dark and/or fighting Pokemon. I picked Pangoro for him because in order for Pancham to evolve, it has to train with other dark types, and Aren came from a family of delinquents. The twig of bamboo in Pangoro's mouth also helps it sense the presence of enemies, which Aren is an expert at. So I drew a Pangoro with its fur smoothed down in an attempt to look at respectable and non-threatening as possible.
Saiko as an Alolan Meowth is an easy one as well.
A lot of fire types would match well with Hairo. I thought of Darmanitan and how it would be funny if Hairo switched to "Zen Mode" at exactly 8 pm. But I liked that Blaziken looks commanding and doesn't have any sleeves, so it visually matches Hairo a little better.

A few weeks back Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, in their irritatingly faithful form, told us we still have field moves, but we summon wild Pokémon to do them for us so we don’t use a move slot. This only kinda sorta solves the problem? So let’s talk about Field Moves in Pokémon, aka Hidden Machines, aka HMs.
So I still don’t care for HMs in Pokemon games. I’ve heard arguments for them. I understand the pro-HM side conceptually but don’t vibe with it per se.
I am able to get my own vibe out of their reasoning though. See, one of the views is that players are doing things wrong by having HM slaves and that part of the fun and challenge should be about having HMs in your team’s move pools and figuring out how to make that work.
See, were it not for the obvious fact that “Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game”, that would make sense.
But Game Freak has not designed the game in a way to incentivize this behavior. Instead they gave us the ability to optimize this potential “fun(?)” out of the game:
Each Pokémon only has 4 move slots so those are very precious to people trying to maximize their potential from a limited active kit.
There are non-field moves that, in-battle, usually do the same thing as most of these field moves but better.
For example why would I give a Pokémon the 50 damage, 95% accurate, Normal-type field move Cut, when there’s Slash. Slash is 70 damage, 100% accurate, has a high critical hit ratio, is also a Normal type move like, and the Pokémon is performing the same physical action with the same anatomy!
And finally Game Freak made Pokémon that are able to learn nearly every field move at once, thus enabling HM slaves.
Everyone’s familiar with Bibarel that can learn 6 of 8 vital HMs in Generation 4. Pelliper can do 3 of 8, covering 2 Bibarel can’t do, covering you for Gen 4. I recently opened up my old Pokémon Emerald and was surprised to see young me figured out the whole HM slave system because in my PC box, I had a Linoone and a Wailmer covering all the needed HMs sans Fly.
But anyway, the thing I am able to vibe out of the pro-HM side was my own subtle reasoning: encouraging coverage.
I mentioned there are moves that are like field moves but better. But for me there are two field moves that are still great for battle and so vital for traversal that it makes more sense to have them in your team constantly: Surf and Fly.
Because you’re almost always going to need water travel and fast travel, I pretty much always had a Water Pokémon and a Flying Pokémon in every team and every generation.
Until I played Pokémon Moon. I got to the Pokémon League and realized after accruing a gang of my favorites that I didn’t have a single Flying type.
I wouldn’t necessarily call Flying a necessity for Pokémon teams but it has its uses. But because ride Pokémon exist, I didn’t need a Flying type, so I wasn’t forced to branch out that way. My team comp is still hella diverse but there could always be a moment in the future where we still have ride Pokémon and I accidentally forego a Water type which is arguably more useful.
However looking at my incomplete UltraSun game, it’s all starting to hit me. I have only 5 Pokémon on my UltraSun team. Because I cannot find a 6th one that I like that is also from the same generation and also doesn’t mess with my team balance.
Team UltraSun’s got a Decidueye, Vikavolt, Araquinid, Salazzle, and Alolan Ninetales. Nearly all the Pokémon I like of this Gen I used up for my Moon team. And the ones I was considering like Alolan Marowak has too much type overlap in a team that already has too many type overlaps.
Now imagine, if you will, if we didn’t have ride Pokémon. By my own play style I would be obligated to always have a Flying type with me. Given that necessity, I would have to branch out and go out of my way to find Flying Pokémon I could enjoy or warm up to.
Like I don’t think I would’ve actively chosen Archeops in Pokémon Black were it not for the fact I needed a unique Flying type. But when you look at it it’s actually a really cool Pokémon and I was glad to have it around.
It’s a stupid point of view and it’s built entirely out of my weirdly specific play style. However, if people do value having readily available transport at all time, then HMs could, in theory, bring value by encouraging you to branch out and try Pokémon you might’ve not considered as you’re trying to cover your HM bases.
But at the end of the day they’re still kinda stupid.
Like I get it, they’re progression tools so that you can control how far your player is able to go at any one time. It makes sense. And conceptually it is really cool to have your Pokémon be able to affect the world.
But the execution just does not live up to the fantasy of having your Pokémon affect the world. Especially since they use abstract shapes and time consuming cutscenes.
What we have here is a series of needs conflicting with experience. And there are many proposed solutions, most I’ve cribbed from other people.
My favorite solution is that instead of there being a specific move in a pokemon’s move pool, there are just Pokémon that are capable of using these abilities inherently and as long as you have one of these Pokémon in your party you’ll be able to overcome those obstacles.
Like, instead of teaching a Pokémon Cut, you just have Pokémon that could cut stuff down because they inherently have sharp claws or something and that just bypasses the whole thing. Oh, and it just happens automatically when you press A. That way we’re not wasting move slots and we can still have our Pokémon affect the world. And they just don’t have access to the ability until badge because yadda yadda.
My other favorite solution is that Pokémon remember ALL their moves, but can only use 4 in battle and you have to just set them outside of battles. That way a Pokémon can still have HM moves but they don’t effect your battle tactics unless you want them to.
But also, when you have a Pokémon use a field move, let us see them do it. Actually live up that fantasy and experience you’re to provide.
