Creator Spotlight #21: hanyolo

Welcome back to the TWW Creator Spotlight! For every spotlight, we’ll ask each featured author or artist the same ten questions (as well as questions you submitted on Twitter!). This week we are so pleased to be chatting with the wonderful hanyolo (on ao3)/@tonysstrk (on twitter).

1) What are your top 5 desert island fics by other authors?

Number one is 100000% the girl dad josh little women fic that my wife wrote for me. It is beautiful and wonderful, I am truly obsessed and I cry every single time.

Number two is the fic that B (joshatella) wrote for me last christmas. I gave so many ridiculously specific prompts and she absolutely nailed it. Just a lot of season four romcom goodness with the best kinda of canon divergence

2) Do you have a favorite character to write? Favorite ship(s) to write? Are there characters or ships you'd like to write more of?

My favourite character to write is 100% donna moss, with josh a close second. And because i am predictable my favourite ship to write is always gonna be donna and josh. I would really like to write more cjtoby at some point but i am waiting for my muse to return from war before i explore this one further.

3) Tell us about your writing process (setup/location? Night or day? Snacks/beverages? Computer/phone/notebook? Music or silence? Anything else you want to share is welcome!)

I simply write wherever and whenever the mood strikes. I used to exclusively write on my phone (notes app girlies rise) but now i definitely prefer writing on my laptop. I usually have a pepsi max on hand but that has nothing to do with my writing process and everything to do with my inability to get through the day without drinking soda. Sometimes i like to have music on, especially if i am in a busy/loud place, but usually silence works best for me. Also writing club, which i do with my friends and is super encouraging! Even though it’s usually just me and sam facetime and getting no writing done our bad

4) What writing advice do you have for others who may be reading this?

I feel like a fraud answering this because literally what do i know? But i guess my advice would be:

If the words aren’t coming, don’t beat yourself up over it. Move onto something new, even just prompts or drabbles, and come back to it later.

Write with friends!! On facetime, in person, whatever. It’s super encouraging and a great space to share ideas. Sprints are also good!!

Reread your older work. I do this when I’m doubting my writing abilities and it serves as a great reminder that I actually can write and that people enjoy what I put into the fandom no matter how I feel about it.

Write for yourself. Who cares if there are people out there that don’t write what you like? You think I wrote Donna pegging Josh for other people? Absolutely not. I wrote that because it was something I wanted to read and because it was a story that meant a lot to me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You can’t please everyone, but you can do what works for yourself and tell the stories that you want told.

5) From where do you usually draw your inspiration? (Other forms of media, music, tropes, etc?)

I’m all about the tropes and the canon divergence but i am also a big fan of watching things and asking myself: how can i make this about joshdonna? Have also been known to use a prompt generator a time or two

6) What is the fic you've written that you're most proud of and why?

Probably sad josh fic (sorrow found me when i was young) because it started as a tiny idea and an even tinier drabble and ended up as 40k words of sad angsty character exploration. It was definitely challenging at times, and I upset myself writing it more than once, but I’m really pleased with how it turned out, particularly the noel chapter which was so different to anything i’d ever written before.

Also my good place au because I worked really hard to make a good place universe for the west wing characters and I really love how it’s turning out.

(Special mention to kinktober because we really managed to post 31 days of smut and I got a girlfriend out of it???? thanks josh and donna ur h0rniness has done so much for me xx)

7) What's the fic trope/concept/AU you'd read 1000 of? What's the fic trope/concept/AU you'd write 1000 of?

DONNA DESERVED A POST-GAZA PTSD ARC AS WELL AS HER OWN NOEL MOMENT AND THIS IS THE HILL UPON WHICH I WILL D*E i could spend the rest of my life reading/writing fics about this and never get bored

8) Is there anything you'd like to try writing-wise that you haven't yet?

This is a really good question and i am afraid i’m not sure i have an answer for it? Something i’ve vaguely outlined and kinda started is a character exploration of donna but it goes from donna at 5 all the way up to present day donna. And i have a vague idea of how i want it to turn out stylistically but i won’t know if it’s going to work until i actually make a decent amount of progress

9) What's your go-to Starbucks/coffee shop/other drink order?

So my go-to is some kinda of coffee caramelly frappuccino, but i am also partial to a seasonal drink. See: pumpkin spice latte, and briefly a soy peppermint mocha before I got like five terrible ones in a row. Basically anything with sugar, syrup, and whipped cream.

10) Do you have any current projects you'd like to promote or anything upcoming you'd like to tell us about?

I am slowly but surely churning out the next chapter of my good place au. Also keep an eye out for the donna fic i mentioned above, as well as you guessed it a post-gaza ptsd arc fic that i have maybe 1000 words of so far

Obviously I pick 17 people because of the hijinks, the drama, and the joshdonna of it all. Picture present day Josh and Donna flirting, present day Josh with those big brown eyes like a baby cow, present day Donna telling present day Josh “if you were in an accident I wouldn’t stop for red lights” I WOULD SIMPLY PASS AWAY. also I think the toby/bartlet scenes would be Exquisite.

From @softxsurrera: who was your favorite tww character when you started the show and when you ended the show?

I started watching tww after seeing gifs and edits on twitter (all joshdonna, of course) so I went into it with the knowledge that Donna would immediately be my best gal, and seven seasons later she is still the best person I know and my all time favourite person.

From @softxsurrera: what is your all time favorite ep of tww that you could watch over and over again?

NOEL!!!!! But also is it cheating if i have more than one? I’m just gonna go ahead and name some of my comfort episodes: 17 people, stackhouse filibuster, 20 hours in america, arctic radar, dead irish writers, somebody’s going to emergency

From @kennysroys: If you could get advice from any two characters? Who would it be and why? What would you want them to give you advice on?

Margaret because I 100% believe that she holds all the universe’s knowledge. And Toby because he would give it to me straight and tell me what I need to hear.

Obviously it would be transition so i could see sexy stressed unhinged Josh in person and also so I could see Josh and Donna SMOOCHING in person i am nothing if not a voyeur (of joshdonna)

Donnatella Moss and Donnatella Moss only. We would discuss everything and nothing and mostly just anything she wants to talk about and I will simply listen. Y’all know that video of kathryn hahn watching rachel weisz speak?? that’s what this would be.

Stealing this straight from community but jed loses his favourite pen and doesn’t let anyone leave the oval office until it’s found. Drama ensues, sides are chosen, secrets are spilled. Just a whole lot of hijinks, shenanigans, tomfoolery.

But also me and kate watched ben and leslie’s wedding today (that’s love, bitch) and i would love to see tww characters going through some kind of disaster preparedness drill which, of course, ends up being a disaster in itself (but in a super fun way)

I spent the first year of the pandemic exclusively watching the newsroom so that was both my gateway to s0rkin and remains my favourite non-ww s0rkin project,, and also molly’s game because i forking love that movie !!!!!!

From @sam_writes_fics: do you have any fun/favorite/niche headcanons for any of the characters and/or ships?

Oh boy where do i start? I will preface this by saying that 80% of my headcanons are to do with donnatella moss best girl ever. So i love the hc that donna has three older brothers, and she was wilder than all three of them combined but she got away with everything because she was just a teeny tiny baby and her brothers should have been a better influence (“mom, she’s twenty-two” “she’s just a BABY”). Donna loves romcoms, like she is just such a sweet sappy romantic, and all she wants is for that One grand gesture of love (josh gives her this in hawaii). If hiring herself on the campaign hadn’t worked it, she would have gone into teaching. Either an english teacher or a kindergarten teacher, she hadn’t decided yet. It took donna a long time to admit she needed help after gaza because she knew that when she let herself fall apart, there wouldn’t be anyone around to pick up the pieces and she didn’t want to have to go through this alone – not quite accepting that the breakdown was inevitable. GIRLDAD JOSH!!!!! Three moss-lyman daughters and they are the absolute best of friends and josh is the best dad ever and donna is softest mom ever. Both josh and donna are equally soft with their girls but neither of them will admit it and loves to tease the other about how easily they give in to the girls pleas and pouts.

My all time favourite j/d fix it is, of course, post-gaza realisations, but i also love canon divergence around the time of the season four romcom episodes.

My favourite minor character to write is margaret, particularly in my good place au. She was also the best part of shrek fic imo. I just love to give her a random lil oneliner that is so ridiculous but also so undeniably margaret.

Okay i would love to expand my joanie fic (the past she is haunted (the future is laced)) because i have so many thoughts on josh and joanie and how this impacts josh as a father and there is just so much angst and pain and also softness to explore!!!!!

So i actually wrote part of this in my fic i don’t know anything (but i know i miss you), and i 100% believe that cj goes to la with danny because she’s convinced herself it’s what she wants, and after a few months realises she’s made a mistake. It’s all very amicable and cj flies back to dc and turns up at toby’s door. They stumble through the first month of coffee dates and dinner dates until one day something just clicks and they know This is it. They move in together, they discuss marriage but it’s not really something either of them needs because they Know how committed they both are to this relationship. They don’t have kids but cj is best stepmom ever to huck and molly, and also they somehow end up with like three dogs that never feels like a conscious decision but just kinda happens and it Works. CJ ends up finding part-time work at a non-profit and it was supposed to be temporary but she actually really loves it and it is exactly what she needs after eight years in the white house, and this is never in a million years where she thought her life would end up but it’s also the happiest she’s ever been.

From @JessBakesCakes: Is there a fic you’ve written that started out in one place when you were planning it and ended up in an entirely different one when it was published? If so, which one and how did it change?

My forever winter fic was never supposed to be as long as it was - it was only supposed to be the third chapter because the lyrics fit so perfectly!!! But as i was writing, i realised that the lyrics also perfectly fit post-noel and post-gaza, so i had to write chapters for those too!!

I think as well that there’s quite a lot i write that starts purely as vibes and then i kinda figure out where it’s going as i’m writing. The fic i wrote for jess in an exchange (say you’ll never let them tear us apart) was definitely one of these fics, where i had my prompts and a few snippets of dialogue i wanted to include, and then everything else just kind of worked around that and it ended up being super long because there was simply so much more to say than i first thought

I managed to survive another day of work though for a while there I wasn't sure that was going to happen. I also discovered this sizeable fraud trend with this fraudster submitting the same docs across different accts with hi same but differing SSN's. I am not kidding when I said I had to go through like 20+ orders checking if the ID submitted as the same one. Thankfully most were marked for fraud due to the correlated fraud on the name but four absolute braintrust agents signed off on that shit and I had to close 4 accts at like 9:30. So I didn't get off till like 10:15.

Bro these meds are fucking with me so hard. Today I've had blurry vision all day long. Which is apparently a known side effect of the meds. Combine that with my weird balance issues, the bought of random dizziness and light-headedness and I'm just ready to throw in the towel and request my doc sends a different script with hopefully less side effects.

Which at this point I feel like a record on repeat with my whinging.

In other news I got approved for a Playstation credit card so I'm going to purchase the MWII PS5 when it comes in the mail. I was TRYING to get it taken care of now because PlayStation has this amazing special of them giving a 125 account credit if you spend 500+ but that special is expiring today which is sad cause that was a nice little rebate. But....it is what it is. I just hope the MWII bundle doesn't go up in price. I'm mainly getting that because it has the game and that's like what? 65 bucks?

I'm high key hoping the games I bought through the PlayStation store on my PS4 will transfer to the PS5 but I'm not too hopeful. I know my Borderlands 3 copy will. Not sure about Tiny Tina's assault on dragon keep.

A part of me is concerned about getting a new credit card but I COULD have used affirm and paid out over 6 months but those loans always stress me out. I did it for my last two Hot Toys purchases and was able to make the payments on time but I just stress all the same.

And this playstation card is only being used for this purchase. I might add Jedi Survivor since I don't think it's going on sale any time soon and holy shit the second market on PS5 games is a scam. A used MWII was like 55 bucks so ten dollars off the new version of the game. Ya'll are tripping.

And in other, other news I am still super bored with my hair. I've been watching too many Brad Mando videos and this one DIY YTber who has the most gorgeous hair that kinda ranges from a super pale gray with a hint of lavender to a more steel lavender color. It's gorgeous. I have also never bleached my hair aside from getting some highlights.

But I was kinda pinteresting and found a couple of stunning examples that I kinda want to try out

This is like a silvery ashy gray but there's a dark purple shadow root which looks awesome but I'd prolly be better off going to something closer to my natural color.

Not to that extreme and I'm not even sure a shadow root is a thing you can do on a pixie like mine. But it definitely evokes something in me.

It's not so extreme either though a lot of work places don't care about crazy hair color, especially call centers and if I had to in a pinch I'm sure I could go to the hair dresser and just have them tone to a pale ash gray. And honestly? I've never seen myself as a blonde. I'll prolly have to go see Juan about the vinyl decals so I might stop my old boss's sister's hair salon which is attached to the shop Juan took over.

I am not in a rust to get this done but I am super strongly considering it.

Okay I am closing out tumblr and I'm going to work on this damned fic. Not chance in hell it gets finished tonight but any progress I can make is something that inches me closer to completion.

Not a Duo

Summary: Aizawa informs Midoriya and Bakugou that the paperwork Bakugou submitted for their hero duo partnership is wrong. Midoriya's reaction surprises him. More so when more is revealed.

When Shouta got the papers, he had simply accepted them without much thought. Much like many others in UA, he had figured that Bakugou and Midoriya would eventually form a hero duo. Bakugou had taken the news that he was weaker in winter hard when they had figured it out, more so the news that he probably would have to be part of a duo given the volatile nature of his Quirk. Exploding hands weren’t great for rescues or apprehension.

Everyone also knew that Bakugou had a thing for the green-haired girl. He certainly warded off any boys who might go near her but seemed to want to focus on his own school before asking her out. Shouta had figured eventually he would hear about them finally getting together, even as Nemuri argued that Midoriya wasn’t interested in Bakugou at all.

When Shouta looked through the papers later though, he noticed that Bakugou had written independent on the papers as their agency, plus a few other minor things. It somewhat struck him as odd, that he would get it wrong, but as Midoriya had only haded in her signed copy of an acceptance to an agency across the country a day before Bakugou handed these forms in, perhaps they hadn’t had time to talk.

The papers did need to be fixed, and so the next day during homeroom he brought it up.

“By the way, Bakugou, Midoriya. You need to fix your hero duo papers- you put independent instead of the Kingsman Agency.”

“...What the fuck?!” Midoriya asked and suddenly Shouta was staring down an angry teenage girl.

Well… someone was dead.

Izumi stared at her teacher in shock and horror, before looking to Kacchan who looked annoyed and looked back at her.

“What the fuck?” she repeated just ask he asked her,

“You fucking signed a contract shitty Deku?!”

“Yeah!” she said staring at him. “The Kingsman Agency is one of the top agencies in the country, plus it’s far away from you which was my plan.”

“...What?” Kacchan asked.

“I know that no agency other than some local ones wanted to sign you on. So I decided to get to the other side of the country so I could avoid you.” Izumi told him bluntly, glaring at him.

“...What the fuck, is it because I haven’t asked you out yet?”

Izumi jerked back, feeling very confused as she stared at him. Kacchan scoffed at her.

“Of course it was. Look, Deku, my plan was to give you the papers so we could form a hero duo team and be independent together, and then ask you out.” He rolled his eyes. “Kingsman contract can’t be hard to break right? So-”

“What the fuck!?” Izumi burst into loud laughter, slightly hunched over her desk, her laughter continuing as Hitoshi snickered along with Ochako.

“I… doesn’t he know?” Tenya asked Yuuga who shrugged in answer from what she saw.

“Oh god, my sides.” Izumi snickered. “What the fuck Kacchan?”

The look on his face had her howling in laughter again, clutching her desk and wheezing.

“What’s so funny?” he demanded angrily.

“...She’s dating me.” Hanata voiced, the other girl lifting a hand and waving it. Izumi cackled again, laying her head on the desk.

“Oh fuck this is good.”

“WHAT?!” Kacchan shouted. “When the fuck did you start dating?”

“Like second year?” Izumi snickered. “We just… haven’t said anything cause mom is homophobic as fuck.”

“What?” Kacchan asked, glaring. “Auntie Inko?”

“Yeah, god she hates anyone gay. I was like very in the closet for a long ass time Kacchan. I got lucky when I discovered that UA takes over part of the guardianship duties and I got confirmation she couldn’t like force me into an arranged marriage I was really worried about that.” Izumi felt a stab of pain in her chest.

She loved her mom, she really did but she was very set in her ways and very firm. She had an idea of what life should be like for Izumi and would get upset when she even thought of altering it. Izumi was also aware that her mom would love for her to marry Kacchan which made her want to puke at the idea.

Even if she wasn’t very gay, she would rather die.

“Or well, hate is strong. Dislike yeah. Toshinori…” Izumi looked down, feeling very tired.

All Might’s death had been a shock to everyone. He just didn’t wake up one day. His injuries finally caught up to him in the end.

“Toshinori left me all his money so I can finish UA without worrying mom would stop paying for the schooling.” Izumi finally said. “I finally told her last month I was dating Hanata, reminded her she can’t sign any contracts for me not only because UA is in charge of that but also I am 18 now and left. I haven’t spoken to her since. I tried, she didn’t answer.” Izumi felt that pain hard.

She wished her mom would talk to her.

“How didn’t you know Bakubro?” Kirishima asked in confusion. “Sero like told us all when they got together.”

“I told my friends,” Hanata corrected him shrugging. She reached out to grab Izumi’s hand and Izumi copied her, squeezing her hand. “Bakugou isn’t my friend. I’m friendly with him but like… gave up on ever considering him a friend when he kept calling me awful nicknames and treating me like shit.”

“Yeah,” Kaminari admitted. “I kinda… I kinda just hang out with him cause you do Kirishima. I don’t like him all that much.”

“Same,” Ashido said, rolling her eyes at the yelling that sparked in Kacchan until Aizawa flared his Quirk.

“To simplify, Midoriya. You do NOT want to be a hero duo and Kacchan submitted false paperwork.” He asked.

“Correct,” Izumi said. Kacchan shot her a look and she frowned. “Why are you so obsessed with the idea anyway? I mean… now I know apparently you want to date me which eww I am way too gay for that.” snickers came from everyone at that. “But like… why? I had no clue you even liked me. I sure as hell don’t like you at all.”

“You call him Kacchan?” Sato asked in confusion. Izumi shrugged.

“Because when we were kids he hated it? It’s a habit now. I just said it to piss him off like he used Deku to actually mean useless.”

Her words had the class shifting slightly, looking to each other confused.

“Hey, Kacchan,” Hitoshi spoke up then.

“Don’t call me-” Kacchan stopped and Hitoshi asked before Aizawa could erase his Quirk,

“Why do you want to be a hero duo with Izumi so much?”

“None of the agencies who want to hire me plan on letting me do much. I wanted to use the money All Might left Deku and do heroing my way without having to listen to an agency. I also know the nerd won’t rise that far without me, she’s to useless-” Kacchan’s reply was cut off by a punch in the face from Izumi.

“Are you fucking KIDDING ME?!” she screamed at him. “You… I knew you were low. I’ve known it since you told me to go fucking kill myself but this?!”

“He what?” Hanata asked, raising from her seat herself. Izumi ignored her, glaring.

“Fuck, well it’s fucking true! I’m going to be number one-” Kacchan started but she laughed in his face, hard.

“Momo! We looked at the projection made by several different companies, right?” Izumi asked. Momo nodded, her face disgusted as she looked at Kacchan.

“We did. All of them project that Midoriya Izumi, the hero Dekiru, would be in the top hundred within the next five years. Dynamight would only be in the two hundred at best.” Momo announced.

“What?!” Kacchan cried but something about his tone had Izumi baring her teeth.

“Liar. You knew this, you just don’t want to fucking admit you’re not as great as you claim, so you pretend it’s to help me.” She snapped. “Why am I not surprised, you always prefer burying your head in the sand than actually stepping up and admitting you did wrong. You did it when we were kids and you do it now.” She laughed bitterly. “I’m glad I’m getting the fuck away from you.”

“You’ll have to deal with me sometimes,” he threatened. “We’re to good a team to-”

“Are you trying to threaten me with requesting team-ups with me?” Izumi asked. He sneered at her. “Oh buddy, you do not want to go there.” she pulled out her phone and pulled up an audio file and pressed play.

“Take a swan dive off a roof and pray for a Quirk in your next life.”

“Oi, Deku.”

“Kacchan, give me back my homework.” The sound of an explosion echoed. “Kacchan!”

“Ha! Serves you right fucking nerd. You didn’t deserve that mark on our last test.”

Izumi stared down Kacchan who went paler and paler as the audio went on. She finally stopped it after another verbal threat, well aware of the classroom.

“I planned for years to release that after high school graduation. To watch you get what you wanted and then have it ripped away from you.” Izumi snorted, shaking her head. “I decided against it for a simple reason. I’ve met too many villains like you to think you would stay on a civilian path.”

“I’m no villain!” he shouted.

“You’re sure acting like one.” she shot back.

“Agreed,” Aizawa spoke then, his voice cold. Izumi glanced around the room. Hanata looked pissed, about to do something to Kacchan by how her hands were clenched. Kirishima looked heartbroken. The rest of the class stared in disgust but truly not much shock.

The shine of Bakugou had worn off years ago. He was nothing to them now.

“Bakugou, we will be going to the principal’s office right now with the evidence Midoriya has offered. Not only are you in trouble for fraud given you attempted to sign hero duo papers without her permission, but due to the bullying you have heaped upon her…” he jerked his head to the door and Kacchan opened his mouth but closed it at the looks he got. He looked around, lost but no one looked at him.

Izumi hugged Hanata back, burrowing her face into her shoulder and let out a sob.

I forgot to send on my voting story. Ok so my brother and I both got mail in ballots, and let me tell you how we both forgot to mail it in so we just thought to bring them to our voting location. The lady there kinda yelled at us? She was confused and didn't know how to go about it. And honestly I just took it because we were the idiots who didn't mail in our ballots. We had to rip them up and they just us new ones to fill out in person and submit. Not exciting, but a story for void snippet. 👀

When you wake up in the morning, there are still no signed HR forms in your messages. Had you been a fool to think they were interested? How much time does it take to decide such a thing? Perhaps just by putting the idea out there explicitly, it had lost all of its taboo appeal.

There is a calendar reminder waiting for you: Today is chili pepper pollinating day. At least this gives you an excuse to talk to Hoseok.

You find the science officer in the lab as always, sitting with his knee up against his chest. Hoseok doesn’t look well. He’s got dark circles under his eyes.

“Hey, um…” You shuffle your feet. Want to fuck me? No wait…“You don’t look good. Were you here all night?” you ask.

He blinks at you, bleary-eyed. “Um, was I? Yeah.. I suppose. Lost track of time.” He rubs his eyes, before looking you up and down, then casting his gaze back to the floor.

All you want to do is ask about the forms. Or the meeting. Or what he thinks of you now. But you don’t. “I need to pollinate the chili peppers today.” Usually Hoseok is the person who assists with that. “But I can get one of the other guys to do it if you need the sleep.”

“No!” Hoseok lurches forward, standing up a bit to rapidly and needing to put his hand back on the bench to steady himself. “I mean, I’m fine.”

You should disgaree with him. He is exhausted. But you’d like more time to talk to him.

Pollinating the chili peppers is both time-sensitive and time-consuming, hence why it took two of you to get the job done. There were no insects on your ship to do the job for you and if they didn’t get pollinated, they wouldn’t bear any fruit. Your chili peppers were your favorite crop. Not only a vital source of Vitamin C, but all your food benefitted from having a bit of spice added to it.

You and Hoseok head for the greenhouse together. The intital set-up gives you something to talk about in the beginning. Hoseok gathers the pollen from one flower onto a paintbrush, then hands it over to you to paint onto the stigmas of each little flower on the next plant in the line.

Slowly the conversation dries up as you fall into a silent rhythm. Other than just enjoying the chili peppers, you must admit that this was one of your favorite tasks on the ship because of the high likelihood that the two of you would brush hands peridically. Always gave you butterflies. But today he seems extra intent on keeping his distance from you. Was he disgusted by you now? His hands are trembling.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

His hand twitches so hard that a little rain of yellow pollen cascades onto the floor. He curses in frustration before turning to face you. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Um, yes, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“This, um, plan of yours…” he gestures to the vague tension in the air. “It doesn’t feel like you.”

“I’m trying to save the mission. That has always been my top priority.”

“Yeah, I’m still not clear on how this benefits the mission.”

“Yoongi said…” you start to say, but are cut off my Hoseok’s derisive snort.

“Look, if you’re in love with Yoongi, just go date him, okay? Don’t feel obligated to include the rest of us out of pity.”

You frown. “I’m not… I’m not in love with him. It’s just sex. Just biology.”

“This isn’t you!” Hoseok argues back. “You hated the idea of anyone of us ever treating you that way. And now you just want all of us to… to… use you like that?” He splutters out the end of the sentence.

“No one is using me! This is my plan! I’m in charge!”

He sighs. “Well, I can’t be a part of it. Excuse me.”

Taehyung finds you in the gym. It’s good to see him up and about, even if his arm is still in a sling.

“Hey, so I need to talk to you about this, um, ape sex thing.” He fishes awkwardly into his pockets and pulls out his tablet. Maybe Jimin was right. Is Taehyung going to be the first to take you up on your offer?

You pause your jog on the elliptical machine. You wish you weren’t so sweaty and gross for this conversation. Taehyung is such an intimidatingly attractive man with those strong eyebrows and that perfect skin.

Taehyung opens up the tablet and flips to the form. It’s happening. He’s going to sign the form. Shit. Then what will you do? It’s one thing to say you want to have sex with your whole crew, but what if he’s hoping to go right now? You need a shower.

Taehyung has really nice hands. Long strong fingers delicately navigating the touch screen. It seems totally improbable that a man this attractive would be into you, even if you were the only woman in the universe. It just adds to your suspicions that hormones are driving everyone crazy. Perhaps if you slept with him once, he’d lose all interest.

He finds the form and then turns his gaze up to you, staring you down with those eyes. It’s a good thing that Taehyung rarely turns his full gaze on you, because it is almost too much to bear. Shit, is he just going to sign it? Is he waiting for you to give him some sort of signal?

“You can’t do this to Jimin,” he says.

“What?” Not what you were expecting. “Do what to Jimin?”

“This.” He gestures over the HR form. “Signing these forms with everyone. Having sex with everyone. You’re going to destroy Jimin.”

“Jimin’s the one who suggested this whole thing in the first place.” It’s a lie. You know its a lie. Or at least a gross exaggeration. But Jimin was the one who first brought up the idea of sharing. All for the benefit of the man in front of you now.

“No way.” Taehyung scoffs, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow. “No way was it Jimin’s idea that you sleep with the whole crew.”

“Well…” You can’t bear his gaze anymore and look down at the floor. “He wanted me to sleep with you.”

That surprises Taehyung. He puts down the tablet. “What? Why would he want that?”

This is awkward. “He, um, thinks you’re in love with me.”

“What?” There is only surprise on Taehyung’s face. It’s actually a relief to see that Taehyung is just as shocked by that idea as you were. “Why does he think that?”

“I don’t know…” You feel kind of dumb now. Of course, Taehyung doesn’t feel that way about you. Look at him. “Cause you told him you were jealous. Cause you can’t stand to be in the same room as us…”

Taehyung bites his lip. “Oh, um, shit, sorry, that’s not what I meant.”

If Taehyung isn’t jealous of Jimin...

“Taehyung…” He looks up, biting his lip. “What did you mean? Who are you jealous of?”

Taehyung’s eyes widen, but he doesn’t say anything. Instead he reaches for his microphone and mutes it. Out of respect, you mute yours as well. He glances toward the camera in the corner of the room, then stands up and begins unzipping his jumpsuit.

“Um…” You are distracted by the golden arms that peak from either side of the tank top as the zipper reaches his groin. “What are you doing?”

“Need something to block the camera.”

“We have towels,” you mutter. But he’s already stripping out of his shirt. The musculature of his back ripples. He hangs the shirt off of the camera to block the rest of the room from view.

“Yeah, but this way anyone watching will think we’re having sex.” His chest is just as attractive as his back and you flush at the sight of it. Mercifully, he zips back into his jumpsuit as he returns to his position in front of the exercise machine.

“You want them to think we’re having sex?”

“Don’t you? It plays right into your whole save the mission with bonobo sex plan.”

“I suppose.” Though the plan was also supposed to be that there would be no more secrets between the crew. “What plan of yours does it play into?”

“The one where Jimin doesn’t realize I’m in love with him.”

“You’ve never tried to tell him?”

Taehyung laughs wryly and shakes his head. “How would that conversation go? Hey man, I know we’ve known each other for years and I’ve already seen you naked and that you just think of me as a friend, but I’m in love with you. I know that’s awkward but now you have to spend the next twelve years with me, knowing that I’m attracted to you when you don’t feel the same way.” Taehyung sighs. “Doesn’t sound like a good plan to me. If he doesn’t feel the same way, I’ve just ruined the friendship for nothing and then I don’t even have that.”

“Yeah… I get that.” There’s something touching about realizing that Taehyung has been fighting the same battle as you for the last two years.

“I couldn’t tell anyone before launch because what if they wouldn’t let me go then? You know?”

“Yeah, the director wasn’t big on sending anyone who might ‘complicate’ the mission.” The two of you share a sad knowing smile.

“Yeah… And I thought it would be fine, you know? I like women too. I’d just date women until launch and no one would know. I wasn’t planning on falling in love with my roommate.”

“I don’t think any of us really knew what this would be like.”

“I knew it was going to be a problem. I should have pulled out…”

Your mind flashes back to that moment of doubt when Hoseok talked you into still coming on the mission.

“But I couldn’t just let him go off into space without me. Even if he’d never feel the same way, at least he’d still be in my life.”

The emotion in Taehyung’s words makes your eyes begin to mist. “You really do love him.”

“Yeah,” Taehyung sighs again. “But he’s in love with you.”

“Well, he thinks he is.”

“What does that mean?”

“He only feels like that about me cause he thinks I’m the only option.” You wonder if maybe he would feel differently if he knew about Taehyung’s feelings.

Taehyung frowns and shakes his head. “You don’t give him enough credit.”

“Oh come on, you know him. How many women did he date while we were in training?”

“A few…”

“And how many of them was he in love with before he found the next one?”

Taehyung bites his lip. He can’t really argue with that. “So why are you with him then, if you don’t think it’s real?”

You shrug, rubbing your arm. “He wants me. It’s nice to feel wanted, I guess.”

“You know you could have that with any man on this ship right?”

You scoff. “They’re all suffering the same delusion. It’s only-available-vagina syndrome. I just want us all to fuck and get it out in the open. Maybe if we could get it out of our system, they would see I’m nothing special. And then we can get back to the mission.”

Taehyung eyes you up and down. “You don’t give yourself enough credit either.”

You shrug. “You wait and see. Jimin will get bored of me. They all will.”

The two of you both slump backwards in your seats, mulling over your shared woes. Taehyung bends down and picks up the tablet again. “So what should I do with this?”

“Obivously, you don’t have to sign it. I should have realized that not everyone would be interested.”

“Jimin thinks I’m in love with you?”

“Yeah…”

“Is it okay if we let him think that for now? At least until I figure out how to tell him the truth?”

“Okay.”

Taehyung smiles and signs the bottom of the form, then sends it to you. Your phone lights up with a message. “Thank you,” he murmurs before he leaves.

this is a weird af question i'm sure but what would the avatar kids be like if they hadn't ran away to the institute/not realized how messed up their upbringings were?

Oooooooo, now THIS will be fun to answer ((tbh, this has been on my mind for awhile now, so thanks for the excuse to infodump))!!! I’m gonna try doing stuff for ALL the kids, but it’ll be a bit hard considering the fact that most of them are so unlikely to actually submit to their avatardom.

Jonathan Sims: His destiny is a bit of a toss-up, since it depends on which of his parents’ teachings he would end up following. If he takes more after Elias, he’ll end up becoming the perfect Eye avatar anyone could ask for; an endless slew of information and knowledge, not to mention loyal to his patron and his father. If he ends up following in Gertrude’s footsteps though, he’ll use his powers much more sparingly as he grows older and be about 40% more likely to get arrested for arson.

Martin Blackwood: This is going off of the idea that the Lonely’s first big ritual involving him actually worked, otherwise the only other option would’ve been Peter not rescuing him, in which case he would’ve disappeared forever into the fog. In this scenario however, the Lonely accepts Martin as a more physical vessel for itself, and he continues on as a more or less lifeless husk that just swallows everything in it’s sight. Very sad all around.

Tim Stoker: In the event that he never runs away, Tim would complete his training as a dancer and allow the circus to change him into something barely resembling a human anymore (I haven’t actually listened to much of The Mechanisms, but maybe he’d look something like the Tim toy soldier guy??? I like him). He's Danny’s right hand man, as well as the circus’ muscle when things get particularly dicey.

Danny Stoker: He would’ve ended up very spoiled and damn near as conniving as Sasha; takes a lot after Nikola and makes her proud at every opportunity, making him a bit of a mama’s boy. Would be an incredible ringmaster, praying primarily on those attending the circus with their family members (especially sets of siblings). Becomes much more powerful overtime, almost completely growing into a monster in the process.

Sasha James: An absolute master of manipulation and trickery, using her hacking skills to start the Web down a path of internet fraud and impersonation on a massive scale. Ends up being rivals with Eye!Jon, leading to them having a very Spy vs Spy dynamic that’s this close to them becoming friends, but alas, their parents hate each other and they know it. Ten times smarter than anyone else belonging to the Web.

Melanie King: Say hello to Grifter’s Bone’s new lead bassist and singer! She takes up the mantle by the time she’s thirteen or so, putting a more young punk spin on the band’s music, which draws in younger victims for the Slaughter’s influence. Has a thousand something knives on her at one time, and has a hard time not joining in on the riots the band starts.

Julia Montauk: In the event that Trevor can’t keep her from succumbing to the Hunt’s influence, she becomes a brutal, violent creature that stays primarily in her Hunt form, only turning human when she wants to draw out a hunt/trick people into thinking she’s one of them. If things go really bad, she ends up killing Trevor at some point to prove she’s stronger than him (and immediately regretting it).

Alice “Daisy” Tonner: I feel like her fall would be similar to canon, with either Trevor never finding her, which leads her to follow her canon path, or she joins Julia in fighting back against Trevor’s desire to save them, eventually running away to hunt on her own and become a fully fledged werewolf. Unlike Julia, she never turns human after a certain point, and eventually she goes on to kill Julia after she crosses into her territory.

Oliver Banks: I honestly have very few ideas on how he would end up in this sort of AU, seeing as he’s kinda already on a path that’s very aligned with the End’s influence, but if he completely gave in and did whatever it wanted, he’d probably become something akin to a grim reaper, stalking people in their dreams and making sure they’ll die the way they’re fated to. Might take an apprenticeship under Nathaniel Throp.

Georgie Barker: Similar to Oliver, I’m not 100% sure what to do for her. I feel like the Admiral is what’s keeping her from falling, so without him she’d definitely become a completely fearless and relentless avatar of the End, carrying out similar death sentences to Oliver, except she actually makes more people die than is necessary. If Jon follows Gertrude’s teachings in this scenario, then he starts trying to help her escape her powers.

Mike Crew: He’s kinda already becoming a fully fledged avatar of the Vast, but like Oliver, I can see him going further than he has. He’d be almost exactly like his canon self, except he’d have a much harder time blending in with modern society, relying on his connection to Simon and the rest of the Fairchild family for help getting by. If he ended up getting abandoned though, he might become more lonely over time... 👀👀👀 Martin could certainly use a “friend”

Helen Richardson: Seeing as Michael and Gertrude finding her is what’s essentially saved her already (I imagine she’ll still have Spiral powers for the rest of her life, but she could never become an avatar later on in the CA AU while she’s being raised by Michael), in this scenario she’s never rescued, and she either dies in the Spiral due to neglect, or she becomes similar to Martin, acting as a mere vessel for her patron.

Jane Prentiss: I’m still a bit iffy on how to write Jane, seeing as I added her after the AU was already kinda started (and also because I don’t remember much about her from S1), but I imagine without Adelard saving her, she would’ve eventually left Amherst to be raised by the Corruption in a more direct fashion, making her like Helen and Martin, but with more free will than them.

So all in all, Jon vs Sasha would be a big conflict with the Stoker Brothers occasionally getting involved just so they can Cause Problems On Purpose, Martin, Helen, and Jane are the resident “ghosts” that haunt everyone, Julia and Daisy are feral, Mike can’t cope with this shit, Georgie and Oliver are essentially grim reapers, and Melanie is the only motherfucker having any fun.

These are some very sad/unfortunate scenarios, huh? At least this is all speculative and in no way canon to the CA AU as a whole; it’s just a fun lil’ idea to think about! Thanks so much for the ask, Anon!

Mustang

Anon: Hi! It’s the anon who was asking about the Cassius/Mustang plot point! Thank you for answering my question so throughly and thoughtfully! I was kinda nervous to post anything and I thought your answer was really kind. And I hope you do like debates because I have an almost embarrassing amount of thoughts lol (it’s why I did the “submit a post” thing).

I’ve read Golden Son a billion times — it’s one of my top 5 favorite books. It never occurred to me until after I wrote that first ask that Mustang might have been spying. I wish that was clearer in the book (if that is what Pierce intended). But if she was spying, it seems she missed a vital piece of intelligence; it didn’t seem like she knew the Bellona were going to murder her family at the gala. She clearly knew something was up, but there didn’t seem to be a plan in place to defend her family during the gala. Yes, the Howlers are on Luna, but it’s not clear to me if they were literally hovering outside the gala waiting for Mustang’s signal? I’d also argue that a lot of what she needed to know about the Bellona (you mentioned Julia’s hunger strike and Karnus killing Claudius) was public knowledge. I don’t think it’s clear whether she gained any key knowledge by dating Cassius. Also, I would argue that she does let her emotions overrule her logic, based on this line: “I felt a fraud. A wicked girl who’d contrived a reason to do something stupid.” I’ve always read that as her admitting, yeah, this whole thing wasn’t my best idea. (How do you read that line?)

And I agree she seems to feel guilt over using Cassius based on that scene, but in her future interactions with him she’s pretty stone cold. I would think if she felt guilty she might want to at least tell him the truth about how she viewed their relationship? But she avoids talking to him until after he’s almost hanged (I wish we knew how that conversation went!).

Here’s the thing. I think it’s fine if she made a bit of an error in judgement. In fact, I’d like her character more if this Cassius thing had been framed/viewed more as a mistake. She can still be brilliant and a genius and powerful and also mess up sometimes.

One of the reasons I love the Red Rising series is all of the character arcs. Sevro struggles but eventually grows into his role as a leader. So does Darrow. Victra sees herself as a destructive monster but eventually realizes she can change and she deserves love. Cassius realizes he’s on the wrong side.

I never felt that same type of arc with Mustang. In the book and in the fandom she seems to be viewed as beyond reproach. And that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with perfect characters. But I think it’s the reason I never really connected with Mustang. I love the conversation you quoted from Golden Son. I think it’s one of the few times Mustang lets her guard down a little. I wish there was more of that. And I wish we could see her struggle and overcome something on a personal level. Like, I’ve always thought it would have been cool of Darrow’s mother was the one person in the whole book who didn’t immediately like Mustang, but then eventually Mustang wins her over by saving Darrow on the ice or something.

I’m not here to hate on Mustang. I think she’s smart. I think she’s loyal. I think if she wanted to keep Pax from Darrow that’s her business and it’s not a betrayal. I like her and Darrow together. I don’t think she necessarily owes Cassius an explanation about anything. I just wish we got more insight into her character. Her getting a POV in Dark Age is super exciting to me for this reason. I want to know if she ever has doubts. I want to see her mess up. I want to see her put her trust in someone only to have it bite in her the butt (but then get out of the jam).

Do you think Mustang has any character flaws? What do you hope to see from her in Dark Age? (I’m so sorry this ended up being a billion words long!)

Astrea: Hi! Great thinking with the submission thing. Keep the debates going!

I’m happy to know your insights on Mustang more. I love it when people have different opinions on things, but debate about it friendly. The hate isn’t necessary at all and since I’ve been on the receiving end of hate in some fandoms for loving a character or the series as a whole, I’m sick of it and glad this fandom, with all its imperfection, has people like you. Though have to mention that Virginia is my favorite female character so there is some bias to what I say even if I try not to be biased.

Now, I think that people interpret some things in certain ways. That is especially a thing since Darrow’s pov is subjective. We see the things his way so we make our own opinions about what is one and said. These are mine:

I know that I always reiterate how perfect Virginia au Augustus is, but to be honest, she is not. She just seems like she is. Look, there is a quote by Nietsche I adore that goes like this: “what is done for love is beyond good and evil”. What Virginia au Augustus did with the whole “dating Cassius” thing was beyond good and evil. She tried to keep her enemies closer to protect her father…now, Nero isn’t the most deserving guy to protect. She forgives a lot of things from her family and her self sacrificing isn’t a quality in this case. There is also the fact that she loses at Deimos and she gets desperate, anything to protect her child, which again, is justifyable and understable, but it walks that thin line. Add to that her political mistakes as Sovereign: she is a fair ruler, but thing is…she doesn’t rule anymore. The separation of power was done too fast, she gave up too much power and the Senate doesn’t have any kind of stop sign now (look at what they did with the immigration laws, the fact that hate speech is a normal occurance and they have no legislation to stop it or punish it etc.), Pax got kidnapped because she is seen as too weak and people-pleaser to crush the Syndicate, the fact that Sefi didn’t get punished for what happened on Luna when the Obsidians attacked innocents with her leading them is not ok and compromise or not. Her fight with Darrow before he left…he was wrong, but she wasn’t right either. You can’t force your beliefs on someone, you can’t force someone to not do something even if it’s for their own good. They have to choose.

Again, no one is perfect and Virginia fits in that category too. Pierce Brown’s characters are very human and made of shades of grey. And he wrote Virginia like that too.

Getting back to GS, yes, she knew her father wasn’t seen in a bright light by Octavia, but it wasn’t common knowledge that she wanted him dead or that the gala was made to kill Nero. We find that out later. Virginia au Augustus might be strong, but the Sovereign was stronger, she ruled over the entire Milky Way with an iron fist. She needed to be sure before going against her, that’s why I believe she waited for Octavia to confirm the assassination plot. You can’t go against the Sovereign just on assumptions. Sevro confirms that he was brought back to the Core by Mustang. Kavax congratulated her on her plan of staying in Octavia’s graces. Yes, you might think that she didn’t gain much out of it, but she learnt a lot about Octavia, politics, Board of Quality Control, the law system. She knew how to bait her father into accepting her and Darrow’s plan (the one with taking Institute and Academy students) because she knew how to react to Octavia’s plans. Remember also that she kidnapped Lysander which isn’t at all a small feat to do.

I don’t think it’s fair to say that she didn’t evolve at all, she’s just flat character. She is a Reformer, but she defends her father who is a tyrant. She believes that Colors deserve basic human rights and interColor relationships legal and protected by law, she believes in another way than that of the Society, yet, she does what she does for her family. She does walk a line of rights and wrongs. Put in a position where she has to choose between what is right and her family it took awhile until she made up her mind. But she did. She chose what was right. She sentenced Adrius to the gallows. She fought for what was right. She, who was raised to choose her family above all else. It’s not a thing easy to brush off, because, she didn’t do it because she loved Darrow, she did it because she acknowledged that her family is wrong, that they are the enemy, that she can’t keep jumping to help them and step on her principles when people are dying and her loved ones are suffering.

When she says she felt like a fraud? My interpretation:She said it about herself in the context she was finding herself in that relationship. She told herself she could go on in a loveless relationship for the sake of the people she loves (she admits she didn’t love Cassius and I believe her), but when she saw Darrow again she felt like a fraud, a wicked girl. Why? Because she is using Cassius for her own interests. Because she isn’t like her father, she isn’t proud that she manipulates a good man and his family like that. Because she doesn’t love Cassius like he deserves to be loved, she still feels for Darrow. Because as much of a Pixie Cassius was for a time (a long time), he isn’t a bad person.

Because the whole thing is presented from Darrow’s point of view it seems like Mustang’s plan wasn’t the smartest tool in the box, but there is no way Darrow, Nero, Adrius and the rest would have gotten out of Luna alive. Ever! So it wasn’t that bad, not really a mistake. She isn’t really happy with what happened if that makes things right in your view. But it is what it is. I think Pierce wrote her outside of Darrow to show her moral lines, views and character unattached to his. Imagine that she and Darrow never broke up before he went to the academy. That means she might never have gone to Luna to be a political genius and make a career for herself (she led the Telemanuses, the Arcoses and allied with the Moon Lords and had their respect in MS and the Reformists looked up to her in GS so I think her work on Luna helped her achieve those), she might have never learn things about herself or experience a relationship or become a Reformist. She would have been another love interest, a character created just for the protagonist. Now that’s a stretch, but that’s the idea - she needed to be on her own. She needed to be written away from Darrow in a way or another. The way it was done is filled with drama, but if you look at the details of it, it isn’t that bad.

As for the whole ‘not talking to Cassius’? Honestly, I didn’t give a fuck about that. I was on Sevro’s side, Cassius was a Pixie in my eyes. He started to get likable towards the end of Morning Star. And I agree with the whole Virginia doesn’t owe Cassius shite, because she doesn’t. Cassius killed Fitchner, helped the Sovereign and the Jackal kill her father. She didn’t even love him…thank u, next! Now my pettiness aside, because Cassie is part of the top 10, thank u Iron Gold! She talked to him when she felt like it. There is nothing wrong with that. I think it was after Darrow showed Cassius that holo of his family getting killed at Octavia’s orders. (and yes, after he was hanged) I think it was to partially tell him the plan and partially to tell him the truth about their relationship, why she shot an arrow through his neck with no hesitation, because she owed him that much.

We’ll get probably more info in her pov, but we can give her a break on this subject because 1. she never got the chance to talk to him again in GS with war and Triumphs and being pregnant and 2. they only re-met at the Peace Treaty, they talked only business and the whole thing got blown up by the Howlers before something could come of it.

Virginia au Augustus is an acquired taste really, so it just depends on how you read in between the lines Darrow’s pov. For me, she is a well written character. The amount of self-control, intelligence, kindness, teasing and confidence and vulnerability (it’s rare, but it’s more special for it, like that moment after Darrow and she talked to Adrius, when she cried and let herself be fragile in Darrow’s arms) she displays are very beautiful for me, especially after having a father like Nero (who had more mood swings than me on my period) and a brother like Adrius…and losing her mother and her best friend - Pax.

I am not trying to convince anyone to like her as much as I do. I’m just explaining how I see her…so these are my views.

7/21/2021: Trang at 48.2 years old seeking for job at Social Security Administration

July 20th, 2021

Dear Honorable Judge Michaud:

Remember moi, Mai-Trang Thi Nguyen ( social security number: ______________________________)? I came in for a review to fight for the reversal of an amateur reviewer’s decision of my case to reactivate my disability status after I submitted myself into a mental hospital for severe anger that I wanted death to that particular amateur by abruptly shutting down my disability. It has been nearly 7 years since you reactivated my disability with my submission of the mental report from that hospital. Anyhow, I am still disabled with crippled back pain that forces me to lie down parallel to the hard floor for at least an hour every hour my body is vertically up. My mental illness of anger and revenge is still strongly prominent; however, I can reduce that by jailing myself at home to avoid the public as much as possible or I’ll become cracky and jumpy with nervous that will endanger my life and others if I were to be driving or even walking in downtown crossing 2nd street nearly got hit by the transit the last time I left the social security office fighting with a rude and unprofessional social security agent at the window.

So, judge, I have a proposal with a win-win solution: I get off disability while disability gives me a job. While laying crippled parallel to the floor thinking of revengeful plan, I was able to develop homemade physical therapy and psychological ways to prevent myself from acting out in violent against those homosexual bosses at gay Starbucks in gay San Francisco and their followers who crippled me almost to death by failing to report my work injury of a back strain coupled with the mental anguish of mental illness of revenge, hate, depressed, etc. of being bullied, intimidated, harassed, and even sexually harassed in a minor form (a new dyke-lesbo boss swiftly brushed her breast against mine 4-6 times in a month every time she walked passed me behind the counter. Before my menstruation, I finally found the courage to retaliated by purposedly pulled myself back she walked by to hint to her to stop. I don’t get this breast-brushing feeling with other female baristas, but only her and only during first month since she started working. Then I learned that a homo-male can make sexual advancement to a single female with no children by insinuating that they should make a baby after he exploded in a gay annoying but cute way by saying this at work, “Why don’t you want to make a baby with me?” Anyhow, my mental-illness against the homos at Starbucks was released after I sued them. Even though I never won, since then, I have sued Worker’s Compensation for failing to include mental illness in my Starbucks injury and a Chinese-American male doctor claiming my back sprain is only 20% disabled. I moved out of gay San Francisco since, but found myself getting harassed and intimidated by more homo (this time, a full little dyke, and a large obese female) working at Google as security guards while I was standing next to my car in a public street with no parking restricting signs or painting which happened to be across the Google building (there were other companies on that street, too). I sued Google, too. I am now suing the United States for trump’s recount-recheck of the coronavirus-infected 2020 election by stating the government committed treason when they said the coronavirus-infected 2020 election was 100% secure, had very little frauds and no massive frauds.

I would like to propose a new kind of job for me in the social security office to reduce the mass-violence in America involving mental illness by creating a new division to combat this disease using me as an example: received disability to stay home avoid causing problems in public (driving, work, college, army, even high school or under), got fee waiver to file lawsuits to release my violence (I developed arthritis at 36 because my violence against them homos and their hetero buds at Starbucks subconsciously made me punched the computer’s key pads so hard into lawsuits), got free physical therapy sessions (I got some but the rest was my desperate-broke-homemade-semi-homeless-homeless-in-car-parked-in-dirty garage invention), free psychiatrist sessions (I got none because the worker’s comp psychiatrist in ga San Francisco closed to that Starbucks in pacific heights area failed me miserably, and of course a female Vietnamese psychiatrist down in San Jose failed me too. The rest I had to invent on my own by pulling things together), got free healthy meals coupons during the time of pain I charged my credit cards to debt to pay for yummy but kinda healthy food to calm down my pain and anger instead of pills, etc.) What do you think judge?

I gotta tell you guys a funny story. I’m going to put it under the cut because it’s long and also probably not of any interest to anyone who hasn’t sold on eB*y before, but it’s a followup to something I posted back in October and the ending is kinda epic:

Okay, so back sometime around the end of October I posted about a buyer that was giving me trouble. She had filed for a return label to send back something she bought from me, due to the fact that she’d found it cheaper someplace else after she’d paid for mine. Which isn’t allowed - the only valid reason eBay allows for requesting a refund is if the item isn’t as described. Which mine was. So I politely told her her request wasn’t valid and as per eBay’s rules I was under no obligation to let her send it back or issue her a refund.

She fired back a rant telling me that I should read the rules because she was ABSOLUTELY allowed to get a refund for that reason if she wanted to (yes, she did actually use the term “if I want to”). So I pulled up the easily accessible Rules For Buying page, copied and pasted the paragraph where it’s clearly stated that the only situation in which a seller is required to issue a refund is the one situation that ours clearly wasn’t, and sent it to her with a “thank you, have a wonderful weekend” because that should have ended it right there.

She threw an ungodly SHIT.FIT. Told me I didn’t know what the hell I was talking about and she was gonna get me kicked off eBay AND get her money back. Oh and for my information, the “real” reason she actually wanted a refund was because the item wasn’t as described (which is, coincidentally, the rule that I had copied and pasted to her in my previous reply, which she vehemently denied was anywhere in the rules). I laughed hard at that...like, pants pissing hard. She hadn’t even known about that rule until I told her, and then she immediately changed her story to fit it.

BUT - she’d already filed her complaint under the category of “found item cheaper somewhere else”, which in eBay speak = shit out of luck. You can only file once and you can’t change anything once you’ve submitted it. She filed with an invalid reason, the first one they immediately disallow straight across the board - Buyer’s Remorse.

She blew her load in her own damn face.

Cue multiple more emails threatening me, telling me I have no idea what I’m talking about (I’ve been selling there for 20 years this Autumn, she’s been registered for less than 2 years) and insisting that I do what she says and give her her damn money back NOW. I say sorry, but no. But I still have to take some sort of action on the filed complaint, because that’s just how it works (a seller can lose a case that they’re clearly in the right on just by failing to respond to it officially). That plus the nutbag had added more details to her side of the case, stating now that the item wasn’t as described (despite having officially filed it as Found It Cheaper Elsewhere).

So now she’s got two conflicting reasons listed for wanting a refund, but since she filed it under the first one, she’s screwed and there’s no unscrewing her. But still I gotta do something official from my end, I’m just not sure what.

So I called eBay and asked if I should ignore the request or decline it. The rep got the details from me, read all the emails between myself and Nutbag, reviewed the case notes, and came back to the phone LAUGHING HER ASS OFF. Decline it right now, she told me in between choking sobs. So I hit the decline button while the rep tried to get herself under control (and failed, because yeah, Nutbag’s emails were amusingly unhinged and ridiculous as hell) and we chatted for a minute because this was apparently the best thing that had happened to her all day and she was grateful to me for calling. So I ask her what Nutbag can do next. “Absolutely nothing” she assures me. “Block her unless you just really enjoy being harassed, though from the looks of it you were having a great time.”

Yeah, I admit I was :)

But to avoid any more wasted time and energy, I go ahead and block her, meaning she can never contact me again because all of our correspondence has been through the eBay messaging system and she doesn’t have my email address. It also means she can’t bid, buy, or send offers on any of my things ever again. I’m shut of her. Good riddance. Ebay rep assures me that if Nutbag strikes back with negative feedback, all I have to do is call again and they’ll remove it and give her a strike for abuse of the feedback system. Everything is in my favor and there’s absolutely nothing for me to worry about.

Ebay rep thanks me again for the good time and we say goodbye.

I keep an eye on my feedback for a few days, but nothing happens, and after about a week I stop even checking it.

And then about two weeks later I get a notice from PayPal. Nutbag has filed a chargeback on the transaction. She has filed a claim that her credit card was stolen and the purchase wasn’t made by her.

This is conflicting lie #3 on this purchase, and they’re just getting more hilarious as she gets more desperate to win. The big gaping obvious hole in her claim this time? The item was shipped to her home address, addressed to her, and the USPS tracking that PayPal had access to showed it was delivered to her at that address. Why would someone steal her card and make purchases on it, only to have them delivered to her, the card owner?

So I called PayPal and pointed this out. Another rep got the opportunity to laugh their ass off, and laugh he did. I had already called eBay and requested permission to share with PayPal all the correspondence that took place through their system, so the PP guy read it all and just fell apart. He counted the lies and I could all but see him shaking his head in disbelief. And then the big whammy happened, and my faith in the entire universe was completely, unequivocally restored (with the exception of the rock Nutbag lives under).

PP rep informs me that not one penny will be taken from my account, because I’m covered by PP’s insurance and the case OBVIOUSLY is fraudulent...and then he tells me the really good part. Because she filed the chargeback through her credit card company instead of through PP themselves, according to PP policy her account with them would be closed permanently. As in, no more PP for Nutbag. EVER.

I about choke on my tongue. Every crooked thing this woman has done has backfired on her SO EPICALLY that it’s starting to border on unbelievable. It’s like the two bank robbers in Raising Arizona who ended up just breaking back into jail at the end because everything they did blew up in their faces.

So PP rep guy (still laughing) tells me not to worry about anything, there’s nothing I need to do, even if her credit card company goes ahead and grants her the chargeback (which wasn’t likely because PP rep guy was typing notes about the fraud into the claim page as we were speaking) that PP would pay it through their insurance and not a penny of mine would ever be touched. The claim wouldn’t count against me and absolutely nothing was going to happen to me.

But Nutbag was about to get a very upsetting email from PP, and dear god in heaven I wish I could have been there when she got it.

So PP rep guy and I bid each other good day, he thanks me for the funsies, and I spend the rest of the day giggling because omg it feels so good when lying dishonest assholes get what’s coming to them.

She lost, completely and ignominiously, at both eBay AND PayPal (and probably her own bank as well) - and all her frothing at the mouth to get even with me had failed embarrassingly.

So...all of this wrapped up a couple of weeks ago, and earlier tonight it crossed my mind to check my feedback at eBay, because I’d sort of forgotten about Nutbag. Still no bad feedback, which is really surprising based on her previous refusal to back the hell off no matter how many times she was proven wrong. But hey, I’m not complaining, that’s one less phone call I have to make.

And then out of curiosity I click on her ID and look at her purchase list on her feedback page. There’s been no transactions since her run-in with me. Not one. And then I realize...without a PayPal account, her eBay account is basically useless, because a good 99% of all sellers there require PayPal as their only accepted payment method. Some will take credit cards, but after PP reported her attempted fraud to them, they probably canceled her card as well.

Nutbag can’t buy on eBay anymore :D

I kept my hard earned money and my good selling reputation and got a good jolly giggle out of the whole thing. And somewhere in New York, a failed fraud with the worst lying skills in the history of dishonesty is probably still trying to figure out how to get that $18 back from me.

And that’s the story of how I saved the rest of the eBay selling community from ever having to deal with Nutbag. You’re welcome.

No sports, no fun

Good bye, maybe.

I’m afraid I won’t ever feel again the way I did on Nov. 4, 2000, when I was not yet 13 years old and the pain was new and all-consuming. I loved sports so much it hurt, and that love bore bitter fruit when Anthony Thomas fumbled a football for no good reason, and Michigan lost to Northwestern, 54-51, in the most stunning game I can remember.

I couldn’t question the feeling, nor did I think it could be questioned; my amygdala pulled its trigger and I buried my face as deeply as I could into our cold, wave-patterned couch in the next room. My shock even erased the memory of the steps I took. I remember the twin feelings of a cold couch on my face and injustice. Or maybe not quite injustice, but something unfair. It didn’t feel targeted. For the first time maybe, I felt impersonal, unmotivated and heavy cruelty.

Thomas was a football player of mythic proportions, a torso of concrete and legs made thick just from making sure his upper half didn’t topple over. He was marvelous, and at all times mildly disappointing, a perfect picture of inefficient smashmouth football just before the sport discovered better ideas. Thomas carried the ball 37 times for 199 yards, but he was outdone by Damien Anderson, who rushed for 268 yards on 31 carries in a Randy Walker offense that was one of the first examples of spread football on a big stage.

That game would come to be known as one of the most influential in college football history because of the way an underpowered team shocked another team of Thomas-ian proportions. But lost in the final score is the way Thomas fumbled. He broke through the line for what should have been a game-winning first down, then he simply dropped the ball.

There was and is nothing to be learned from that. The whole was instructive; the details were not. Michigan would have won but Thomas dropped the ball, and then I hurt and I couldn’t make it stop.

I obsessed over that play. At the time, I obsessed over every aspect of Michigan football. I remember falling asleep thinking about Michigan’s ongoing high school recruiting class, its deficiencies and how the current commitments might shape the team. I used to take a football out to our front lawn and play out the upcoming games drive by drive, hucking the ball up in the air and running under it to make a big catch. If I was feeling generous, I’d give the opposition a rare interception. On a related note, I was a pretty lonely kid.

Before I developed a better relationship with sports, I approached them almost exclusively as something my team either won or lost. I decided I ought to take them very seriously, to the extent that everyone should think of me as a person who knew sports. I wanted to have the best answer to every question; I wanted to be a vessel of knowledge that others would rather submit to than challenge.

At the time, it seemed like a hobby. Now I know I was compensating for being a pipsqueak in every other regard. The problem, either way, was how much I had staked my confidence in being right.

I wondered if I could say I loved sports like I used to, or if I ever loved them to begin with. That period showed me a couple things: 1) That I could bull shit anything in writing, and 2) maybe I should readjust my relationship with sports.

I never stopped wanting to be a sportswriter, which I’ve wanted to be my whole life. But I also picked up a knack for editing, the process of turning your first thought into your best thought, of shaping and shielding and censoring an unvarnished self. That unvarnished self was often a truer self, perhaps. But it didn’t sing, and it never won.

I consider SB Nation my first real job, though when I started it only paid $1 more per hour than the fantasy gig. The difference was at SB Nation I saw a path to who I newly wanted to be. Which is to say, I started chasing a sense of superiority on moral grounds.

Working here has forced me to look back and figure out what I truly loved about sports. So far I’ve found two things: Charles Woodson, and the way sports helped a shy kid introduce himself. For me, sports’ best utility has been the way they facilitate genuine connection. Which is almost funny, because we know now the extent that sports are artificial by how easily they’ve disappeared.

But to know that sports have had some importance in one’s life is proof they can’t be trivial. They are real in the fact that we choose to empower them. The score has never mattered. Sports live because we give them life.

I don’t always feel good about that fact. Although I’ve come to terms with being mildly stupid, and I’ve gotten better at appreciating things intrinsically, I still often hate that sports are integral to me and that I’ll leave this mortal coil defined by something that never gave me agency.

There’s an image I’ll never shake. My last visit with my grandfather as he lay on the bed he’d die on. He was person I’ve perhaps wanted to emulate most in this world. A French history professor. The funniest, most considerate person I knew. He made everyone feel heard. I said this at his funeral:

He always paused before he laughed, turning over what you said and taking even the bad jokes and finding their point of redemption. Funny enough, this was a sign that he took you seriously, that he thought what you said mattered, even if you were five years old and nothing you had ever said to that point had ever been important. And because he laughed with you, you couldn’t help but laugh along side.

Just a month or two before I saw him among his final days, prostrate, suffering terribly from dementia and barely able to speak. He no longer embodied the self he had curated over 85 years. I talked to him about Michigan football because that had been the thing we talked about the most. He responded only in smiles and hmphs. I didn’t know if he retained anything I said until I started to leave the room. He said the last words I’d ever hear him say: “Go Blue.”

The image that haunts me isn’t my grandfather: Every memory of him makes me love him more, and I’m more grateful than words can say that in our last interaction we felt connected and happy.

Rather it’s my imagination, seeing myself dissolved layer by layer, body and soul disappearing. What would be left in a reduction of my experiences, love, regrets and relationships that I cultivated or destroyed? It might be sports’ afterimage, an outline of Anthony Thomas.

I feel sports’ absence. Maybe I’ve become accustomed to a constant hum of play, or maybe this pandemic has, in a terrible roundabout way, helped us see what is intrinsic.

But I do miss sports, even if that feeling is a byproduct of muscle memory. I miss fun, and sports have been the best outlet I’ve even known to find it. I’ve had a hard time not seeing this period as an attack on fun, that, more and more, the world is becoming something I don’t want to go back to: stodgy and bitter, a self-perpetuating game to see who’s winning at any moment. It feels like there’s no room left to be quiet and gentle.

I don’t know when fun will come back, and it feels fair to ask if it can. There has never been a good answer whether dumb anger is simply the natural state of things, or something we’ve reinforced on one another. There’s only the imprint that anger has left, deep with slippery walls.

The only thing I know is we all want to belong; that at the root of every fight is ostensibly the same impetus — to be full of love and free of worry once again, to feel complete and want for nothing. We just can’t agree on terms.

But I believe there is a healthy definition of belonging. One that does not subsume you, but lets you position yourself amongst the world, and create your own space as opposed to being dictated its rules. A way of editing that doesn’t entrench self, but amplifies it.

The end of the world is demanding, but we have options. And when I close my eyes, I can still see the world I want.

Just wanted to come here to ask a question. My car is an '03 model and was caught in a hail storm a few weeks ago. Hello all, i'm looking for car insurance on gocompare.com site and if i'm taking the insurance on my own name, the price comes up at 1,200 for a 1995 Ford Fiesta LX 1.2. I am 20 years old, male and held the licence for 1 year (1 year and 6 months to be exact) and have 0 NCB. Now, here is where the 'cheap' part comes in. Hi, I've had insurance in CA for 2 years and moved to Oregon recently. I had my insurance tranferred with an useless Farmers Agent in OR. The thing is I already paid my 6 months premium in CA which is covered me until 06/2009. I paid nearly $450 for until 06/29. I've had quite a few discounts in CA but the jug-head agent in Oregon, not shifted any discounts to Oregon automatically.
