temp explanation and tag sorting thing
hi! name's mick, but you can call me artemis or porpoise! my pronouns are she/he/they.
i made this account as a way to sort my enjoyment of marine stuff (my main is @cielosphere , which is a mess of reblogs) and quickly escalated to include practically all bodies of water and rain and even a little bit outside of that. i just like water!! and glowy things. below is my tag list and how it operates.
side note: i do want to put scientific names, atleast genus or family, in the tag of the post said marine life appears on (along with its layman name), but i am not very good at this atm. if you know the scientific name of the creature in question, pls point it out in the notes or as an ask, thank you!
#not water ~~~ anything that is not water! more broadly speaking, other things i may reblog to here that don't fit the "water aesthetic" or aim or aren't related to water at all (such as rebloggin info about pngs)
#on porpoise ~~~ this is gonna be my own self tag for when i make original posts, or am just talking. works like a .txt tag i suppose
#not reely but ~~~ this is for posts that do not outright contain or depict water (such as these two) but fit the "water aesthetic" i aim for
#landscape ~~~ no obvious animals in image, just plants or sea or what have you. some subtags of this will include #aquarium and #cave
#scenery ~~~ similar to the above, but the area is manmade (such as gardens) might remove if unhelpful
#marine life ~~~ catch all tag for any creatures in a post, usually followed up by specific tags for that creature (such as #jellyfish or #ctenophera), and possibly a full scientific name if i can find it. yes sponges and maybe coral will be included in this but flora such as kelp won't be-
#plants ~~~ cause thats what this tag is for!
#art ~~~ self explanatory. subtags of this will say what type and the medium used is (the difference between illustration and painting)
while i have no exact tags for this, i also try to tag for location (countries, oceans, biomes, if its a park or aquarium, etc)
Tumblr media
everything is a bit of a wip at the moment as i try to make an organization system im satisfied with while actively reblogging and posting things (not to mention figuring out how themes on desktop work), so thanks for reading!

“Famous more as a cultural feature than as a natural one, the pace at which the River Mersey is recovering to a fishy wonderland has ecologists stunned.
Splitting The Beatles’ home city of Liverpool in two, a recent survey found 37 different species of fish, more than two-and-a-half-times as many as were found in the previous survey 20 years ago.
Five different species of sharks were also found, along with huge eels and sea scorpions. ‘Holiday species’ as one local fishermen called them, like turbot, smelt, and cod, have also been caught.
Scientists at the Mersey Rivers Trust, a public/private charity-driven partnership for nature in the area believe that these species are breeding in the 3 mile-wide estuary.
The Liverpool Docks—the largest enclosed dock system in the world, were described by Herman Melville as comparable to the Pyramids in size and construction. As a result, industrialization heavily polluted the river. In 2009 however it was announced that the river was “cleaner than at any time since the industrial revolution” and is “now considered one of the cleanest [rivers] in the UK.”
“Over the last 30 years, there’s been this tremendous regeneration, this renewal of the River Mersey that started slowly but is now picking up pace. I still think we’re right at the beginning of something special,” said Mike Duddy at the Mersey Rivers Trust, who spoke to the Wirral Globe about the restoration...
Humpback whales were recently seen in Liverpool Bay for the first time since 1938, while the Mersey itself has also welcomed back otters, salmon, octopus, porpoises, and seals.
The Trust is currently compiling a species list, and is holding a competition with local fishermen to see how many can be recorded. Duddy expects to raise the count of 37 fish species to 50 next year.”

The pixel artist Neorice (https://twitter.com/Neoriceisgood) is making an enormous collection of pixel art marine creatures. I sent him an email asking if I could upload some of his art to my blog and he said I could; so here are a few of my favourites. I might update this post if there are new ones I'm quite fond of.

What color are orcas' eyes?
In short, mostly brown. In long, it's a bit complicated as Killer whales (and for that matter, all cetaceans) have multi coloured eyes! Unlike us humans, who have a singular coloured iris and a white sclera, cetacean eyes come in more flavours. Their iris is circled by a pale ring of varying colour, and the surrounding sclera is more often than not coloured too, sometimes even bi-colored. I have actually been working on a cetacean eye-colour-chart thing so I have some neat illustrations ready.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the components that make up a cetacean's eye. It should be noted though that when relaxed, the eyelids cover much of it, leaving almost only the iris visible. As an example: a Harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). On the left a clear view of the eye in its totality; on the right as visible in life.
Tumblr media
Onto the whale in question. All cetaceans have beautiful brown irises: in many it is an unbelievably rich reddish hue when sunlight hits it directly. In shadow or underwater it looks more subdued though. Then comes the pale ring which in Killer whales is quite variable: in some animals it is very pale, almost white, while others have beautiful bright blue rings. The sclera appears two-toned in blackfish as far as I've seen. Killer whales have a rather modest dark brown area of sclera around the iris-pale-ring-combo, with the surrounding "base" sclera reddish pink. For comparison, False killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) have a bit more substantive dark brown sclera area, with the surrounding sclera a striking bright red.
I hope this answers your question! This makes me want to finish this chart haha so maybe that'll come soon-ish in its totality.

A close encounter with a very scarred individual! This is potentially a male, evidenced by the heavy rake marks down his body (it is often assumed more heavily scarred dolphins are male due to mating competitions), though it is possible these scars were caused by his environment at some point. Also of note are his parasites - if you look closely at the edges of his pectoral and caudal (tail) fin, you can see what almost looks like fringe. These are actually dangling parasites, likely Xenobalanus globicipitis, which is actually a kind of elongate barnacle!
Bonus: if you look closely, a black manta makes a low fly-by in the background

they'll make the drivers -who's voices always go unheard especially on matters regarding safety- gather around for a minute of silence, they'll make them put their helmets in the middle, it'll be a wonderful spectacle of solidarity and then they'll do nothing. If spa is so important to the DNA of motorsport then just change it. but the spectacle is more sacred than life.
