Forecasting Love and Weather didn’t need to give me the most heartwarming tertiary couple I’ve ever witnessed to date, but they did and I love that for me!
Tae-Kyung, the older sister of the main female lead, and Seok-Ho, the subordinate and coincidentally the neighbour of said-sister, meet by chance in the elevator of his apartment building. Seok-Ho is a mysophobic, introverted workaholic with no social life who likes his privacy and Tae-Kyung is an intrusive but well-meaning big sister, a divorcee and an aspiring children’s book author. These two have seemingly nothing in common but keep running into each other by random chance and eventually strike up an unlikely acquaintanceship. Seok-Ho has extensive knowledge about animals as a special interest of his and Tae-Kyung seeks out his help to do research for her future books.
Seok-Ho has never had someone who is actually interested in hearing him talk about his interests and is genuinely fascinated and impressed by his knowledge. Tae-Kyung has never had someone honestly critique her books in a constructive way or volunteer to negotiate her contracts because they believe her work deserves more than what her publishers are offering her. And most of all, neither of them were looking for love when they met. Seok-ho dedicated his life to his job and never experienced romance or love at all, and Tae-Kyung had given up on love due to her failed marriage of less than a year.
They are both in their forties. They fall in love like teenagers and value each other like no one ever has before. Seok-Ho dates her with the intention of marrying her because she is his first love and he couldn’t care less that she’s already been divorced once. Tae-Kyung cannot even wrap her head around the idea that someone would actually want to marry her again when she’s already failed at marriage once and is past the “marrying age”.
This couple filled a need in me that I didn’t even know I had! Give me more older couples falling in love for the first time. Give me characters who spent their youth pursuing something else or who’s earlier relationships didn’t worked out, but who were able to find true love later in life. So much media is only representative of youth and it sends the message that if you don’t fall in love in early adulthood then you never will. But life doesn’t end at 30, or 40, and you’re never too old to find your person. I want more media that represents that.
