Finally gaining approval and popularity in a world you always craved being a part of vs. watching the other person enjoying the very thing you're trying to escape

One difference:

Why is anyone surprised that Stede has a bloodthirsty streak? This isn't OOC or out of nowhere, people!

The man fantasized about PIRACY.

He brained Nigel for talking shit.

He burned a ship full of people alive just for hurting Ed's feelings last season.

He participated in god knows how many raids with Ed while he was "learning" with him, and wasn't put off by all the maiming at all.

He nearly slit Doug's throat in front of a dozen or more witnesses.

He climbed onto a ship full of bloody bodies and was unphased by it completely.

Also, he's a repressed queer man who spent most of his life being denigrated and bullied for it. You don't think he has pent-up rage? Girl.

Stede doesn't have to be the boy who loved flowers and flinched at the sight of blood OR the steely pirate captain, or throw away one to embrace the other.

People can be more than one thing. Most people ARE more than one thing, many times over. You don't have to kill one part of yourself for another. Stede can have a little violence in defense of those he loves and still be overall very kind, in the show about pirates. As a treat.
