Prompt #145
Rated M!
#145: “Are you okay?” “Why do you ask?” “Because you’re wearing two different shoes.”
The first time it happens, they’re on a case in Gettysburg in the midst of a chilly November the week before Thanksgiving. They get called to a new crime scene in the middle of the night because another body shows up on the battlefield, giving a total count of four murdered college students. It’s after 2 before they can think about leaving, and close to 3 when they begin the thirty minute drive back to the hotel, an almost eerie silence settling in. Gettysburg is beautiful, especially in the fall, but at night it gives her the creeps, thanks to Reid reminding them all it’s one of the most haunted places in Pennsylvania.
Aaron is driving, his eyes flicking between the road and Emily at his side in the passenger seat. She feels his gaze in seventy-second increments that are meant to be discreet, and yet are anything but. There’s chemistry there, something they’ve never acknowledged but never completely denied, either. And in the stillness, without any distractions, it’s undeniable.
“Something on your mind?” she finally asks, wondering just what goes through his head because even after all this time she can’t always figure him out. Aaron’s response is more of a grunt, and Emily isn’t quite certain she even heard one at all. “Care to share?” They are, after all, stuck together for the time being.
This seventy-second increment only lasts forty before Aaron’s eyes are on her again. His voice is low and gravelly, a dangerous mix of steely calm, he says, “Sometimes, I think about what it would be like to fuck you.”
She’s almost surprised.
There’s a familiar flutter in her stomach, an ache between her legs she can’t ignore at his revelation, a thought that mirrors her own from time to time. She gets a touch of satisfaction when his knuckles whiten around the steering wheel, and she has about fifteen seconds to consider a response. “Then pull over,” Emily breathes before she can think too much about it, and her heart nearly beats right out of her chest when he actually veers to the right, the car coming to a full stop along the side of a road.
It’s hurried and frantic; there’s nothing careful about the way her teeth scrape against his jaw or the way he all but tears off the button of her pants, his fingers curving inside of her so perfectly. Emily chokes on air as his thumb hits her clit, the moan that escapes her throat reverberates through the car and he shushes her by wrapping a hand around the back of her neck and pulling her in to cover her lips with his own. The front seat of the car is unforgiving to say the least. Her legs bend at an impossible angle as she sinks down on him; her head falling back when she’s fully seated, her body stretching to accommodate him in a way that makes breathing a concentrated effort. Aaron lifts a hand to her back, pushing her shirt up just enough to touch her spine as her hips rock, curling the other hand around her upper thigh to guide her movements.
It’s breathless, almost desperate, and such a bad idea. But it’s over soon, as quickly as it starts, and the sound of the whimper that punctuates the air as she comes dies on her lips.  “This can’t happen again,” Aaron grunts moments after he finishes, still twitching inside of her as she catches her breath, his hand broad and flat across her bare back.
“You’re right.” Emily is quick to agree, because nothing good can possibly come from this happening again. “It can’t.”
It’s supposed to be a one time thing, never to be spoken of again, but they know better than this. Both of them are completely aware of the complications that could (will) arise if it continues. And yet, it’s solidified in their minds, a fire they can’t help but burn. As they expected, (but would never admit) it quickly becomes more than that, then something else entirely.
...
The second time is in December, in the midst of the holiday season rush. It’s stupid, risky, and worth every second. Aaron is in his office late, wrapping Jack’s Christmas gifts, fumbling with the wrapping paper and ribbons on the floor. It’s his fourth attempt, and soon he’s going to run out of the good tape. The paper is always too long, the ribbon is too short, and he’s been at it for over an hour when a subtle cough makes his head snap up in surprise.
Emily stands in the doorway, a thick folder in her hands. She surveys the scene, eyes widening at the implications of what he’s doing, and why he’s doing it here of all places. It’s not his first Christmas as a single father, but there are some things that never get easier. Wrapping gifts is one of them, the reminder that there are some things he has to go at alone.
“You’re using too much paper,” she says gently, tossing the folder on the couch and closing the door behind her. “And not enough tape.”
He must look pathetic, because her face softens even more as she sits down beside him, cross legged on the floor. “Let me.”
He relents, grateful for the help, and Aaron can’t help but watch the way her fingers move, the tendons in her fine-boned hands neatly folding and precisely cutting, until the contents of Jack’s new lego set is neatly concealed behind Toy story wrapping paper.
“Wrapping your own gifts, I take it?” Emily quips, handing him the perfectly done box.
“Something like that,” Aaron drawls. And damn it, he can’t help himself from cupping her face in his hand, his fingers tightening just enough around her jaw to make her scoot a few inches closer to him. “Thank you,” he says, pushing a piece of hair from her face, pressing his lips to hers before he can think twice.
And that’s how they end up on his desk, Emily’s back flat against the heavy mahogany oak, her head cushioned by his suit jacket and his button down shirt. She smells like pine needles and peppermint, his face buried in her shoulder, her legs wrapped around his waist as he thrusts into her relentlessly. This time they come together, wrapped around each other in his fucking office, and she’s almost ashamed of herself for giving in so easily. It can only get worse from here.
“This can’t happen again,” Emily tells him, her voice still thick with lust, an arm around his neck to keep him close for just a few more moments. By now the sun has set, the sky is dark, and soon enough the night custodians will start their rounds. “I should go,” she adds for good measure, shifting beneath him impatiently.
“RIght,” Aaron nods stiffly, pulling out of her carefully and noting the way her hips stutter at the loss of him. Nothing good can possibly come of this, he thinks with regret, a thumb brushing over the soft skin of her lips. “I’ll see you tomorrow,” he says with an air that sounds final, like the closing of a door not to be opened again.
But it’s only a matter of time.
It happens again, like they know it would, eight weeks later in February. Except this time, it’s nothing like the first or second. Aaron shows up at her door with a bag of takeout under his arm after he gets off the phone with the Italian Consulate yet again that night. The priest, Father Silvano will be extradited back to Italy to stand trial, but the damage is already done. It’s been a hellish few days, it hasn’t stopped storming and now the rain has turned to snow, the flakes dusting over his shoulders as he raps his knuckles three times.
Aaron doesn’t even know if she’ll be there - he all but reamed out Dave for not driving her back home earlier that night instead leaving her to walk in the snow. She needed space, was Dave’s argument, and Aaron half considers going back to look for her if she doesn’t answer.
But Emily opens the door, wearing a sweatshirt that has seen better days, her damp hair starting to frizz at the ends. Her eyes are red; it doesn’t take an idiot to know she’s been crying. There are tear stains on her cheeks he pretends not to see, and instead offers an awkward smile.
“What are you doing here?” She questions, not out of anger but mild surprise, not missing the bag in his hands. “You … you didn’t have to do that.”
“Thought you’d appreciate a free dinner.” He shifts the bag to the other arm, the scent of Italian wafting around them. Only then does he recognize the irony of his choice of cuisine, and hopes she doesn’t make the ill-timed connection. But of course she does.
“Really, Aaron? Italian. Is that supposed to be some kind of joke?”
“Poor planning on my end,” he manages, looking slightly regretful. “For what it’s worth, the pasta is good.”
“And the company?” She lifts an eyebrow and studies him carefully. “Does that come with the free dinner?”
“Added bonus,” Aaron quips. “Unless you want me to leave the food and go.”
Against her better judgement, Emily laughs softly and holds the door open, meeting his concerned eyes for a brief moment as she lets him slide past her. He’s been to her apartment only once before, in a desperate attempt to get her back on their team, but he correctly guesses the cabinet with plates on his first try. If she has reservations about any of this she doesn’t show it, and simply sinks onto the couch as he brings her a plate, settling beside her with his own.
They sit on opposite ends of her couch with plates in their laps, making light small talk about everything but the situations staring them right in the face - the one from before, and one they’ve been tap dancing around for several months. He has questions yet she owes him nothing; just because they fucked a few times doesn’t give him the right to her secrets. She’s always kept things close to the vest. He knows there are things that lie beyond the carefully curated facade she’d initially presented when she started on the team. This is very much one of those things.
Emily sees right through this, and yet, she still can’t help but question his intentions. “Why are you really here, Aaron?”
“I was worried,” he tells her after a long pause. “And,” he says, choosing his words carefully. “I owe you an apology.”
His admission, along with his vulnerability breaks a wall that went up that first night in Gettysburg in November a few months prior. It’s how he learns one of her most guarded truths, told with careful delineation of facts from emotions, and the gap between them closes with each layer that peels away from her. It’s clear she’s lived with it for a long time, maybe not fully processed it, but it’s part of her and she holds no shame. Emily keeps her chin high as she tells him, her fingers twisting the hem of her sweatshirt, her legs curled to her chest.
Aaron spends the night, not because she asks but she doesn’t have to. Emily falls asleep on the couch, her head resting on his shoulder, his hand on her knee. He doesn’t have the heart to wake her so instead he carries her to her room, making sure she’s fully covered with the layers of blankets before settling beside her.
The morning after is the third time. Emily awakens in his arms, her back against his chest, an arm tucked around her waist. “You stayed,” is all she says before she pushes him onto his back and pulls her shirt from her body, swinging a leg over his hip.
Hell of a way to wake up, he thinks as his hands slide up to her waist. It’s the most normal of encounters they’ve had, and that’s saying something given the circumstances of how he got there in the first place.
...
The days multiply into a familiar pattern of here and there. He comes to her place more often than she goes to his - it feels invasive to be there. He’s a father first, and somewhere in the boundaries of what they are and aren’t, dragging Jack into things still doesn’t feel right. But it’s becoming harder and harder to hide the fact that this extends beyond casual.
As she sleeps soundly beside him, he makes the decision that tomorrow will be the day they have the conversation that is so desperately needed. He hardly sleeps a wink, tossing and turning into the early hours of the morning.
“We need to talk,” Aaron says mere hours later, in a tone that carries more weight than just the excuse of not enough sleep or something equally unconvincing. “About … this.” The flick of his hand between them tells her exactly what he means. “About us,” he adds, albeit unnecessarily.
“Are you okay?” Emily stares at him from over her coffee mug, an amused smirk twisting on her face. He’s nervous, as she anticipated he would be, yet it’s still endearing, and she lifts the mug to her lips to hide the grin that’s spreading across her face. “You probably shouldn’t leave the house like that, you know.”
“Why do you ask?” He fixes his tie with a slightly shaking hand, wondering just how she can be so cavalier about all of this. He isn’t sure when or how his feelings got to this point, but something about all of this feels so final, as if he might scare her away. “I’m fine.”
Emily breaks into a fit of laughter, choking on her coffee as it sprays halfway across the room. She points to his feet, still coughing and sputtering. “Because you’re wearing two different shoes.”
Aaron blinks, and follows to where she’s pointing, seeing that she’s entirely correct. In his moments of utter distraction, he’d put on two different shoes, two completely different colors and styles. But that’s the least of his concerns as the words he’s been meaning to tell her for months now fall from his lips, completely unchecked.
Only after he changes his shoes, and double checks them in the mirror, she gives him a shy yet brilliant smile, coupled with a nod of her head and a resounding yes falling from her lips.

Need You Now
Summary: You never expected a break up to hit you this hard. Now its the middle of the night and you’re making a phone call that you know you shouldn’t.
Player: Colton Parayko
Word Count: 2k
*Inspired by Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now*
Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor
Reaching for the phone 'cause I can't fight it anymore
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind?
For me it happens all the time
You were officially declaring yourself mentally incompetent. This was it. You had finally lost your mind. Here you were, two months out from the break up, sitting on the floor of your living room with a bottle of wine in your hand and pictures of the two of you spread out in a massive circle around you as NHL.TV played the most recent Blues game that you had already watched live.
You were pathetic.
This was pathetic.
You had ended relationships before, but never, ever, had you been in this much pain. You’d cried for a few days and moved on with your life. This time around, you hadn’t done your makeup since the day you’d moved out of Colton’s house and back in with your parents. You’d continued to go to work, barely scraping by with polite smiles to your co-workers. The most productive you had been was moving into your new apartment and that was mostly your sister. You still hadn’t unpacked anything that your sister and friends hadn’t unboxed with you the day you’d moved in.
Again, pathetic.
Acceptance was the first step to recovery, right?
Your only hope was that he was just as miserable as you were. Maybe not. You wouldn’t wish that on anyone, and he hadn’t even done this to your relationship. You had. You were the one who had broken things.
You were so stupid that you had to decide you couldn’t deal with his crazy schedule and the women falling at his feet and his being away all the time anymore. Now instead of getting to have him a quarter of the time you got to have him none of the time.
Smart.
You took a long drink from the bottle in your hand and picked up a picture of you and Colton, taken just after the blues had won the second round of the playoffs. He looked so happy. But he wasn’t looking at the camera like you were, he was looking at you. It was hard to find a picture of you together where he was looking at the camera, because his eyes were always on you.
It made your heart hurt.
You glanced over at the clock on the wall, your brother in law had hung it. It was a present from them, to make the place feel homier. But this apartment would never feel like home because Colton wasn’t here.
It was just after midnight. There was no way he was asleep. He was either out with the guys or he was at home relaxing after the game. He took a nap before games, so he usually didn’t go to bed as soon as he got home.
You knew you shouldn’t. You knew it would just rub salt in the wound, especially if he didn’t answer, or god forbid he did answer, and you could hear a girl in the background. But something drew you to the phone. Like you had no control over your actions, maybe it was the nearly full bottle of wine you’d had in the past hour. Maybe it was all these perfect memories of the two of you all over the floor, reduced to nothing because of your stupidity. Or maybe you were dehydrated and delirious from all the tears you’d shed in the past two months. All were possibilities.
He was still the number one favorite in your phone, you could never bring yourself to change it. You expected it to go to voicemail. Really. So, when he picked up on the first ring, you didn’t know exactly what you planned to say to him and your drunk brain wasn’t working properly.
“(Y/N)?” He said softly, and if you weren’t mistaken there was a bit of hope under the confusion in his voice. When you didn’t say anything he asked, “(Y/N), did you mean to call me?”
That you could answer, “Yes.”
He paused for a long moment and you just listened to each other breathe. Finally, he asked, “Why did you call?” There was no malice, he wasn’t asking you because he wanted you to hang up, at least that’s what you hoped, it sounded like he was prodding for an answer that he wanted to hear.
“Do you miss me?” You asked, “Do you still think about me?” Then you shook your head, immediately breaking through the haze of your wine and sadness and realizing the weight of the mistake you had just made, “Colton, I’m sorry. I’m drunk-.”
“I think about you nonstop, (Y/N).” He said, his voice quiet. You could hear him shifting on his end of the phone. “I miss you all the time. I have to stop myself from calling you every five minutes I have free time because I remind myself that you don’t want to be with… with me.”
“That isn’t true,” You said softly. “That isn’t true at all.”
“Don’t say things like that if you can’t follow through with them.” He said, and his voice sounded so… broken. “Please.”
“I…”
“I need to go. Call me whenever you want, I’ll answer whenever I can.”
Then the line went dead, and you were left sitting in a pile of memories with the realization that you could fix this. You had the power to fix this.
Another shot of whiskey, can't stop looking at the door
Wishing you'd come sweeping in the way you did before
Colton wouldn’t exactly know what words to use to describe what he was feeling at the moment that he got off the phone with you, but the closest he could think of was fucking miserable. He was glad he’d been able to hear your voice for the first time in two… long… long months but now he was about ready to crawl out of his fucking skin.
Because here were the facts: He loved you. He loved you more than anything in the world. However, you flat out said you couldn’t be with a professional athlete anymore and no matter how much he loved you, he could never give up his dream. He’d worked too damn hard to get to where he was to walk away. There were too many people counting on him to pull through. He couldn’t retire at twenty-six.
So, he did the most logical thing that one does after receiving a phone call from the girl you dated for two years and planned on marrying but instead had walked out your door with all her stuff in tow. He headed for the whiskey.
He wasn’t a light weight and it took a lot to get him drunk. Hell, it took quite a bit to even make him feel the alcohol. Side effect of being fucking huge and a professional athlete who’d done his fair share of partying since his early twenties. Sometimes it was a blessing, sometimes it was a curse.
He was leaning towards curse for tonight when he heard a knock on his front door.
It's a quarter after one, I'm all alone and I need you now
And I said I wouldn't call but I'm a little drunk and I need you now
And I don't know how I can do without
I just need you now
I just need you now
Oh, baby, I need you now
Who the fuck was knocking on his door at one o’clock in the morning?
He decided that he was going to ignore it and poured himself another shot, but the knocking grew louder. Finally, he threw back the shot and headed into the entry way not bothering to put on a shirt. Fuck whoever thought they could barge into his house in the middle of the night and expect fucking St. Albert hospitality. Take the hint when he didn’t answer the first three knocks.
He swung the door open and his eyes went wide. There you were, standing out in the cold December air. Your hair thrown up in a messy bun like you didn’t care how you looked but this was in stark contrast to your perfectly done makeup and the outfit that you were wearing that he recognized as one of his favorites. Tight in all the right places and the color of the shirt made your eyes stand out in all the right ways.
But you weren’t wearing a coat and it was twenty degrees outside. “Why aren’t you wearing a coat?” He asked.
You frowned, “I was in a rush?”
“Aren’t you drunk?” He asked as he pulled you inside and closed the door behind you, “How did you get here?”
“Uber. And no, I’m just a little tipsy now.” You stood a few feet away from him.
He nodded, “Okay, and what are you doing here?”
“I needed to see you.” You said.
He would swear that his heart skipped a beat when he heard those words leave the lips he’d kissed more times than he could count but were now off limits. “Why?” He asked, forcing himself to keep his distance from you. As much of a distance as he was capable of.
“I wanted to fix the mess I made,” You said, fiddling with the strap of the Michael Koras purse he’d bought you just a month before you’d split.
For a minute he forgot how to breathe. He’d imagined it so many times, you standing here saying that you wanted him again, but he never thought it would happen. “But you said you weren’t happy. I want you to be happy (Y/N), more than I care about making myself happy.”
You shook your head quickly, tears springing to your eyes. Afraid for the first time since you’d decided to come over to his house that this wasn’t going to go the way you had imagined. “I never said I wasn’t happy with you. I love you more than I have ever loved anyone in my entire life. I thought it was too much for me, only having you around a quarter of the year but not having you at all is so much worse.”
You paused, swiping your hand at a tear that was falling down your cheek, “I love you. I need you. You made me happier then I can ever remember being in my life. I just hated that you were never around. I hated worrying about other girls. I hated going months without seeing you during the summer when all of our friends got to spend actual time together for the first time in a year.” You looked up into his eyes, a feat in and of itself and finished your speech, hoping against all odds that it would be enough to convince him that he was what you really wanted. “But it’s worth it. It's all worth it if I can have you even if it's just phone calls and text messages most of the time. It's worth it and I’m sorry it took all of this for me to realize that.”
He was a big man, a big hockey playing man who had taken pucks to the mouth and sticks to his jaw and barely flinched but god damn if he wasn’t as stubborn as he was he may have actually cried. His eyes were watering when you finished your speech, but he didn’t let the tears fall, instead he took the two steps forward that would close the gap between you and wrapped you in his arms. He lifted you into the air and your legs wrapped around his waist as he guided you in for a kiss.
When you pulled back, you looked at him still blinking back tears and asked, “So will you give me another chance?”
“Do you even need to ask?” He smiled down at you and with the hand that wasn’t holding you up and against him, he brushed your hair back out of your face, “I’ve been dreaming of this since the minute you walked out that door.”

the people of 2019.
For the struggling heart thrown in the middle of a bustling city with no particular idea on how to survive, July breathes for you. The promise of a land filled with overflowing milk and honey but all that was received were buckets of sand and piles of rocks.
You came to the city with a hopeful heart and a duffel bag full of star studded dreams. You were told that the city is where dreamers come to live; this is where a dreamer’s journey begins. But I guess people didn’t want to tell that the city is also where you come to forget – identity. This city will strip you of your being and you begin to forget what you like – mirrors will not display a reflection, rather, someone you don’t remember or someone who’s oddly familiar, either way, it’s not you. This reflection will feel like flashbacks of the past staring right at you but you can’t seem to grasp the idea of who this person is. The city will wear you down like your favourite denim pants or your most worn Chuck Taylor’s – raw.
The city is where you will experience getting caught in crossfire – you versus you. Mismatching ideals and colliding thoughts. Your toughest critic will always be you and let me just say, nothing will be enough for you. This is a series of gunshot wounds that go right through the heart, and when you look for the shooter, you will realize that the gun was always in your hand.
August is one too many orders of café Americano at a local coffee shop for a burgeoning writer wanting to bleed out more words – wanting to prove something. Your mom phones you to ask how you’re doing and your dad says hello at the same time. You tell them about how this process is turning out to be harder than expected and the pressure feels like worlds upon worlds stacked on your shoulders – they are speechless, but that’s alright you know that they try to care, at least they try.
You prop yourself up once more and grab that pen and paper – write, like your life depended on it. One day, you hope everything will just fall into place, that this will all just make sense.
September is for the girl who breathes out smoke rings and wannabe halos. You still have your heart upon your sleeve – don’t worry, it will be okay. The bitter sting of heartbreak is a reminder that you are alive and the tears are assurance that you are still human despite the inhumanity amongst us.
This is for the lingering moments you cannot leave behind too easily – hands held, foreheads touching, and her lips. The acrid smell of rum attached to her breath but oh how you would love to bask in it again – one more, one more. Another rounds of lips locked, slurred conversations, and hazy looks. You think, “I hope she remembers; I hope she knows my name," but you're sure enough that she won’t, that this will all be faded in the morning, or probably right after. But right now, this is yours – claim it. The burning cigarette in your hand and heat from her body – feel it. The night is younger than you are, so live in this puerile moment – hold it the way your hands would want to grasp her being. Remember it the way you crave for her tongue dancing on your salty skin – flesh on flesh. Little girl, this is yours.
Cheers to the galleries and museums that have chanced upon the soles of your feet, to the busy market street and busy market vendors that has witnessed your scraped knees and wrong directions, and to the mugs of draft beer and one too many cigarettes that have kissed your unholy lips – October.
This is for the young boy with shaggy hair and grandfather glasses that managed to pull you miles away from home to walk down the halls of a musty gallery with old paintings that speak a language more familiar than you think. Listen to the eyes, they’re talking. Don’t whisper to the walls, they might be listening.
Young boy, so handsome yet naïve, I wonder why you chose to ignore the warning signs? I wonder if the blaring alarms were not enough to tell you that destruction was ahead. This was not your average girl fitted for the average boy – chaos. But then again, there is a certain beauty to this unorganized flurry of person. Young boy, I wonder what you see?
This is for the moments spent getting lost in old china town under the gaze of broad daylight – asphalt worn shoes and dusty fingertips. Let me hold your hand as our feet navigate us through this untimely maze; do not let go. Market streets and vendor eyes are watching, they silently tell us: “get out,” that we do not belong here; more reason to not be careful, more reason to wake the sleeping spirits of this old temple.
We will raise a revolution – allow me to usher you into the twenty first century: girls kiss girls and boys do the same with boys. This tongue has danced with many and written words on temporarily owned skin. These hands are soiled with prints from yesterday’s lover and are preparing to be held by a new one tonight. We will shake old china town with magnitudes that will make your knees weak. So, allow me to wear this baseball cap like the tiara you want it to be but will never be. I will smudge the red lipstick you want me to my paint on my lips and instead, streak them on my cheeks like war paint because this is war.
Let me spill your mugs of draft beer and crush your cigarettes because this is our turn. We will raise a revolution that will echo through the ages – you wonder why we do this. You wonder what we see.
November is a rollercoaster ride of emotions; up and down the belly of the beast we call life. This is for the girls who tried more than once, more than twice. This is for the girls who put their hearts on their sleeves and allowed the world to feel each beat – loud and clear. I see the effort marked on your palms and the sweat beading on your forehead – you have tried fixing the unfixable. My dear, let me tell you, not everything that’s broken needs to be fixed – shattered glass shines brighter than its whole. Wash your hands, wipe your tears, you have done well.
This is for the tiger stripes, bruised knuckles, and puddles of blood in pooling beneath your feet – I wonder if you knew that was blood? Or, were you too busy admiring the colour red? Beautiful, isn’t it? The stains on the bathroom floor would like to agree, they’d like to thank you for the splash of colour. Grime and plaster white were getting too old.
The coils of rope in the corner of your room would also like to say thank you; the feel of your skin on the abaca twine was home – you are home. They have never been held like that – fervent want exceeded by need. They thank you for needing them. They would like to say they miss you, that your skin is something they crave for, after all, you did spend a bit of time contemplating when you’d use the pretty necklace you forged them to be.
This is for you. Thank you for the vulnerability, not many are proud to talk about it, not many are proud to show. Thank you for the stories you’ve planted on your arm; I’m sure you don’t see the blooming flowers, so allow me to tell you that they are there – roses, daisies, and pink peonies. I will marvel at the garden you have made from your flesh and revel in the seeds budding in your heart. My dear, not everyone can do what you did. Rest – you have done well.
December is for the boy who slept with his jacket still on, wet hair, and shoes caked with mud – adventure. He will wake up to blurry memories and trying to remember what happened last night. What was her name? Where was I? What did we do? Your face turns a familiar colour of pink when it finally hits you, “Ah, yes.” Another beautiful story has been written. In the same manner, you lay on your bed, jacket, already dried hair, same shoes, and a smile.
It is slow mornings accompanied with a cup of hot coffee, two creams and two sugars, for the province girl who has just who has spent the last six months journeying through the iron clad and concrete city of the north. It is steam fogging up your glasses while you watch the two creams swirl into a small galaxy of milky brown while you sink deeper in your duyan. You insert through the casual conversations and laugh at the thought of some – home. This is what actual rest feels like, chirping birds and the sway of giant trees among you, not four corners of a barely filled smaller than small room and screaming cars outside your window. This is more than just the coffee, you think. This is more than just the conversations. You feel the breeze through your hair and warm sunlight glazes your cheeks with a soft yellow – my dear, the universe agrees.
This is for you – for everyone who has struggled through the year but has somehow managed to carry their burdens and finally lay it down. Rest, you have done well.
This is for you – the ones still carrying their burdens and is wondering when it’s all going to end or if it will ever end. You have been numbed by the circumstances.
This is for you – for the people who didn’t make it through. The world pushed you to your limits but do not worry, despite the pain, we will try to understand. You are made of stardust and galaxies that are bigger than what your body can handle; you were not built for this physicality.
We have been bruised, bloodied, and broken – this is part of us but do not begin to believe that this defines us because this is the world’s doing; this is what happens when world doesn’t understand who it’s dealing with. But do not worry, do not fret, we are meant for this world. We now lay to sleep the yesterday of good and bad which is 2019 and open our eyes to the endless possibilities and chances of the tomorrow we call 2020.
This is the beginning of our year, cheers to you!

~~~Friday 21st December 2018~~~
The end of term buzz around school was evidently pouring through the corridors, warming the smiles of every child here and brightening the teaching of every professor. You weren't surprised in the slightest that it wasn't mirrored in your own classroom. The hostile nature still hadn't left since the events of three weeks ago. Imogen's family were still investigating the robbery but were no closer to finding a suspect. Harrison had been forcing himself to act normal, slowly but surely distancing himself from the clutches of Imogen. Sam and Noah had still kept things private, only being seen together when you were at Tom's house and only together at all when they knew prying eyes weren't near. Lily had resulted to being a typical bitch, finding aquaintances with some people from the year below that were happy to follow her around like puppies and even managing to pick up a boyfriend at a local bar, a University student as you'd been told. Everyone was settling into this negative energy like it was nothing.
"Are you coming round tonight?" Tom asks, a question that had started to become a regular occurrence. You had managed to avoid the questions from your Dads by always telling them you were studying with Noah, or at gym, or trying out for the team, or sitting an out of hours test. There was always a reason and none of those reasons were ever true.
"I'd love to," You sigh, "But I need to go home before we leave for my grandparents. I brought your present to school though,"
"Then it's a good job I have yours too," He grins, patting the bulky shape of his rucksack.
It felt strange to be leaving for an entire month. You wouldn't be seeing the confines of these walls or the confines of this group for a full thirty days. How much would change by the time you returned?
"Who's excited for break mother fuckers?" Z grins as she walks into the room with more of a skip to her step than usual.
This was thankfully your last period of the day, one more hour and then you'd be leaving with certain cheers to signify the moment.
"Okay, folks," Mr Fitz calls order to the class, "It's time for your projects. Something about you, and something about someone else,"
"It's exposing time, boys," Harry laughs, flopping back in his chair.
"Well, Harry, would you like to begin?"
The first few are typical. Harry and Sam both say the same things about themselves and each other and have the same PowerPoint slides to back up their words. Noah and Zendaya speak about each other too, both exposing a definitely fake fact about the other. Harrison doesn't even have one completed - but he just claims it is down to special measures. Nobody questions it.
"Lily?" Mr Fitz calls and her heels click against the floor like the ticking down of a dreaded clock.
"Well, what don't you already know about me? I'm going to graduate at the top of this class, and I'm going to be more successful than all of you," Lily grins, shrugging her shoulders with oozing confidence, "Now, (Y/N), what don't they know about you?"
You see the way Tom clenches his jaw and the way fear courses through his veins for a lingering second.
"How about yours and Tom's pathetic relationship?" She cocks a brow, "Or what about this little gem,"
What she lifts out of her bag next makes you go weak.
"Why on earth would you have any use for a, pregnancy test, little miss perfect?" She chuckles, waving the empty box around, "Go on then, tell us the result,"
You see that Tom's eyes are on you and they're full of a mix of worry, panic and annoyance. Words fail you completely.
"That's enough now Lily, please sit down," Mr Fitz waves her off and she gladly takes her seat, "(Y/N), would you like to follow on from that?"
You look to Tom for a split second who is clearly hoping for a bit of an explanation but gets nothing as your chair scrapes against the cold tiles and you make the walk up to the front of the class. Everything had been prepared for yours. Down to the clicking of your presentation and the tone of your voice - it was when your perfectionism became too much.
"I guess I did have something planned but I can't really speak too much about that now," You begin, setting the papers down on the desk, "Lily, you're right. That was in my bag and I did take the test. If that's exposing something about myself then I'll take it. But, if I've learnt anything in the past months here, it's that all you care about is the face value. That's all this school runs off of. That test could be positive, negative or a completely false result. And it wouldn't change anything. You crave that single moment where you think you're better than me and the rest doesn't matter. So, Lily, what do you want me to say? I think you've already said enough,"
The silence settling over the group gives you an insentive to return to your seat, knowing your piece had been said already.
Tom doesn't even manage to say anything after that, but you know he wants you to feel his reassurance in in the way his hand squeezes yours under the table. Explanations could come later.
"Well, now that's over!" Imogen chirps, jumping up and spinning to face you all at the front of the room, "I don't really care for exposing myself but I do certainly have something I think you'd all be very excited to hear about,"
She clicks over the slide and shows a photo of Sam, laughing at his brother behind the camera.
"About six months ago, little Sammy here got himself into some trouble," She begins to explain, "What happened, kiddo?"
Sam is frozen in his spot. As are Tom and Harry.
"I'll proceed," She rolls her eyes, "You, mister, got yourself involved with a gang and..." The photo switches to one of a young boy, about your age with an innocence already echoing in his unknown features, "Wh-"
"You fucking bitch!" Tom yells, slamming his hand on the desk and standing up, "How is this any of your fucking business?"
"Mr Holland, please sit down," Mr Fitz begins and it is almost humorous that he thinks it is going to have any impact.
"I'm gonna fucking kill you!" Tom continues, "Keep your mouth shut and keep your ass out of our business!"
Imogen lets out a laugh and flicks her hair over her shoulder, everyone else stunned to a deathly silence.
Who was that boy?
"That's it, class dismissed," Mr Fitzgerald confirms, "Imogen, Sam and Tom, please stay behind,"
You all uncomfortably rise in the drastic turn of events and take your bags to leave. It takes more courage than necessary for you to glance back at Tom before you exit, whose eyes are still flaring with a built up anger you were fearful to see escape.
"(Y/N)," Harry starts when you walk away from the room, "It was Imogen who found that test. I saw her take it from your locker when you were in class. Before she gave it to Lily, I took out the actual test so they haven't seen the result," He takes it, wrapped in tissue, out of his bag, "I promise I didn't look,"
You can't help but release a fraction of the tension on your shoulders, "Thank you Harry,"
"And about that boy?" He begins, clearly questioning whether you wanted to know anymore, "Sam got himself involved in that same gang as Harrison. He tried using it as an escape when he felt really alone. And he became one of them,"
You stop in your tracks when you two reach the stairs, taking a seat on one of the lower ones.
"That boy was someone that that gang didn't like. They forced Sam into helping them finally give him 'justice'. And, one night, they jumped him when he was coming back from work," Harry continues, completely transparent with you now, "And they just attacked him, it was brutal and pure evil. Sam promises me he never laid a finger on him, but he's never forgiven himself for walking away,"
"How did Imogen know about that?" You frown, feeling a shudder cross your spine as you pictured that young face that had been on the screen.
"I don't know, that girl knows far too much than is good for her," Harry sighs, dragging a hand through his untamed curls, "I should go, they're just coming out,"
You glance up and notice Imogen, Tom and Sam all leaving the class. Tom has clearly relaxed but still doesn't look himself, Sam looks like a rabbit in headlights and Imogen shows no sign of remorse for what she'd just done. It made your blood boil.
"Is this seat taken?" Tom's voice is croaky and far from the warm tone you were falling in love with.
"It is now," You smile, watching as he sits down in the empty shadow where his brother had just been, "Are you-"
"Okay?" He smirks, "God no. But Sam's just thankful nobody heard anything more so that's good,"
"Harry told me what happened," You admit. Would he be annoyed for you getting involved in their business?
"It saves me the trouble. I was going to tell you, it's just not the best conversation to start having," He admits, dragging a hand over his face.
"I guess that's what it was like with the test," You mumble, your fingers brushing over the rough ply of the tissue that concealed it, "I didn't know when I could ever start to bring something like that up,"
"You know whatever it says, I'll be-"
"T," You stop him, placing your hand over his, "I didn't even take the test. I know I'm not pregnant. After we, you know, I started overthinking it all and so I bought a test. But I know I'm not pregnant,"
Tom visibly relaxes and lets out a slight laugh, "Well, that class was a complete disaster then,"
You chuckle with him, "What a way to end the term,"
"No," Tom stops you, "We don't even know if you're coming back next term, so I don't want that to be your last memory of this place."
He rummages in his bag and pulls out your present, you following suit and grabbing his too. Your hands found the clearly hand wrapped present and he did the same to the box you'd given him. Watching to see his reaction, you're thankful when you see him pull out the pair of boxing gloves with a beaming smile on his face.
"(y/n) these are amazing!" He exclaims, turning them round to see the artistic doodles that all had some small relation to him, "Where did you even get these?"
"Well, I designed them myself and then my Dad knew someone and they made them properly," You explain, a weight releasing as you see the excitement on his face, "Can I open mine now?"
Tom nods, less eager than before as he watches you with a bubbling anxiety, "If you don't like it I ca-"
You bring your hands up and hold up the glistening piece in the catching sunlight echoing in quiet corridors. In your view, dangles a petite silver chain, decorated by a small pendant of two boxing gloves wrapped around each other that swung gently in your released breath.
"T, this is-" You begin but the teats pooling in your eyes erase all focus from your words, "It's perfect, thank you,"
You see him visibly relax and he reaches out to clip it around your neck, his fingers grazing gently over your skin, "Since you're not going to see me for a month, I figured you'd need something to remember me by,"
"We're not dying Thomas," You laugh, easing the romantic tension, "I'm sure you could live without me for that long,"
"Are you kidding?" He chuckles, "You don't even know if you're coming back here after Christmas!"
You look down for a moment to your hands and focus on the wrapping paper that had fallen to Tom's feet.
"God, if Imogen wasn't here, everything would be a damn sight easier, right?" He shakes his head and you realise how much of an impact that girl had on him.
From his brother, to someone who might as well be his brother, to you; she'd affected you all. And, in turn, she'd left a deep set hatred for her in Tom's heart.
"Don't think about that, or her, or anything," You nudge him, finding comfort in the way his arm rises instinctively to wrap around you, "Let me just enjoy this school for another few minutes,"
He squeezes you towards him and the two of you stare out at the dead corridors, with their fallen air and settled distress.
And, for a moment, you forget all of the lies and deceit that they hold. Only for a moment.
~~~Wednesday 30th January 2019~~~
"You learnt a very important story during your time away at Christmas, Miss (y/l/n), what was that?" The woman asks and you were sure you'd been in this room for hours on end by now.
"My Dads always told me that, when I felt ready, they would tell me about my mum and the family I had before they adopted me," You begin, your hand instinctively reaching for the boxing glove pendant around your neck, fiddling with it across the cold metal chain, "So, when we were away for the holidays, I decided to finally ask them more about it. I wanted to know who my mum was,"
"And can you confirm what they told you?" She raises her brows and you know she's thankful for this twist in events.
"They told me that my mum was young when she had me. And, when I was born, her other daughter wasn't even a year old. In fact, we would've been in the same school year,"
"Even more important, you were in the same school year, weren't you (Y/N)?"
"When I asked about my half sister, they told me her name was Imogen. And she was the reason they wanted me out of that school," You confirm, the thought still forcing goose pimples onto your skin, "That's why I couldn't hate her. She was my fucking sister,"
You see the woman wince at your words, "Why are you so angry about that? She's family, no?"
"I was born into a life that I wasn't wanted in at all. I was a complete accident and my own mother dreaded the thought of having me," You snap, gripping onto your necklace with whitening knuckles, "Imogen grew up with a life that I was completely dismissed from. I didn't hate her, but I couldn't just accept that,"
"When did Imogen learn of this news? Did you contact her over the break?"
"I didn't speak to her," You shake your head, "Not until the night of the winter ball,"
"And by the night of the winter ball, you mean the night that Imogen, your own recently-discovered sister, was murdered?"
"Yes."

Laurie Lee Memoir
Tumblr media
Overview
A memoir of the Spanish Civil War with “the plainness of Orwell but the metaphorical soaring of a poem . . . An extraordinary book” (The New York Times Book Review). In December 1937 I crossed the Pyrenees from France—two days on foot through the snow. I don’t know why I chose December; it was just one of a number of idiocies I committed at the time. Such was Laurie Lee’s entry into the Spanish Civil War. Six months after the Nationalist uprising forced him to leave the country he had grown to love, he returned to offer his life for the Republican cause. It seemed as simple as knocking on a farmhouse door in the middle of the night and declaring himself ready to fight. It would not be the last time he was almost executed for being a spy. In that bitter winter in a divided Spain, Lee’s youthful idealism came face to face with the reality of war. The International Brigade he sought to join was not a gallant fighting force, but a collection of misfits without proper leadership or purpose. Boredom and bad food and false alarms were as much a part of the experience of war as actual battle. And when the decisive moment finally came—the moment of him or the enemy—it left Lee feeling the very opposite of heroic. The final volume in Laurie Lee’s acclaimed autobiographical trilogy—preceded by Cider with Rosie and As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning—is a clear-eyed and vital snapshot of a young man, and a proud nation, at a historic crossroads.

As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) is a memoir by Laurie Lee, a British poet.It is a sequel to Cider with Rosie which detailed his early life in Gloucestershire after the First World War.In this sequel Lee leaves the security of his Cotswold village of Slad in Gloucestershire to start a new life, at the same time embarking on an epic journey on foot. At all times wonderfully evocative and poignant, Cider With Rosie is a charming memoir of Laurie Lee's childhood in a remote Cotswold village, a world that is tangibly real and yet reminiscent of a now distant past. In this idyllic pastoral setting, unencumbered by the callous father who so quickly abandoned his family responsibilities, Laurie's adoring mother becomes the c.
It is 1934, and Lee walks to London from his Cotswolds home. He lives by playing the violin and, later, labouring on a building site in London. After this work draws to a finish, and having picked up the Spanish for 'Will you please give me a glass of water?', he decides to go to Spain. He scrapes together a living by playing his violin outside cafés, and sleeps at night in his blanket under the open sky or in cheap, rough posadas. For a year he tramps through Spain, from Vigo in the north to the south coast, where he is trapped by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He is warmly welcomed by the Spaniards he meets and enjoys a generous hospitality even from the poorest villagers he encounters along the way.
Synopsis(edit)
In 1934 Laurie Lee leaves his home in Gloucestershire for London. He visits Southampton and first tries his luck at playing his violin in the street. His apprenticeship proves profitable and he decides to move eastwards. He makes his way along the south coast, and then turns inland and heads north for London. There he meets his half-American girlfriend, Cleo, who is the daughter of an anarchist.
Cleo's father finds him a job as a labourer and he rents a room, but has to move on as the room is taken over by a prostitute. He lives in London for almost a year as a member of a gang of wheelbarrow pushers. Once the building nears completion he knows that his time is up and decides to go to Spain because he knows the Spanish for 'Will you please give me a glass of water?'
He lands in Galicia in July 1935. Joining up with three young German musicians, he accompanies them around Vigo and then they split up outside Zamora. By August 1935 he reaches Toledo, where he has a meeting with the South African poet Roy Campbell and his family, whom he comes across while playing his violin. They invite him to stay in their house.
By the end of September Lee reaches the sea. Then he comes to the Sierra Morena mountains. He decides to turn west and follow the Guadalquivir, adding several months to his journey, and taking him to the sea in a roundabout way. He turns eastwards, heading along the bare coastal shelf of Andalusia. He hears talk of war in Abyssinia. He arrives at Tarifa, making another stop over in Algeciras.

He decides to stick to his plan to follow the coast round Spain, and sets off for Málaga, stopping in Gibraltar. During his last days in Malaga his violin breaks. After his new line of work, acting as a guide to British tourists, is curtailed by local guides, he meets a young German who gives him a violin.
In the winter of 1935 Lee decides to stay in Almuñécar. He manages to get work in a hotel. Lee and his friend Manolo, the hotel's waiter, drink in the local bar alongside the other villagers. Manolo is the leader of a group of fishermen and labourers, and they discuss the expected revolution.
In February 1936 the Socialists win the election and the Popular Front begins. In the spring the villagers burn down the church, but then change their minds. In the middle of May there is a strike and the peasants come in from the countryside to lend their support, as the village splits between Fascists and Communists.

In the middle of July 1936 war breaks out. Manolo helps to organise a militia. Granada is held by the rebels, and so is Almuñécar's neighbour Altofaro. A British destroyer from Gibraltar arrives to pick up any British subjects who might be marooned on the coast and Lee is taken on board.
The epilogue describes Lee's return to his family home in Gloucestershire and his desire to help his comrades in Spain. He finally manages to make his way through France and crosses the Pyrenees into Spain in December 1937.

Laurie Lee Biography
Robert McFarlane(2) compares Lee's travels with those of his contemporary, Patrick Leigh Fermor. Both walked across parts of Europe that were in political turmoil between the world wars. McFarlane praises Lee's use of metaphor and argues that the 'rose-tinted' descriptions in Cider with Rosie are replaced by 'very dark passages'. Sex with several partners is described 'euphemistically'. Life on the road is another key theme. As I Walked Out is about movement, where Cider with Rosie is about staying in one place.

The Chase Files Daily Newscap 3/7/2019
Good MORNING  #realdreamchasers! Here is The Chase Files Daily News Cap for Thursday 7th March 2019. Remember you can read full articles for FREE via Barbados Today (BT) or Barbados Government Information Services (BGIS) OR by purchasing by purchasing a Daily Nation Newspaper (DN).
Tumblr media
‘CLOCKING OUT’ – With central Government’s lifeline to be cut at month-end and no money left to pay the current staff, concerns are mounting at the Transport Board about the pace of negotiations with the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) over a second round of layoffs. A Transport Board source close to the talks has told Barbados TODAY that after two months of meetings, neither the union nor the state-owned bus service was budging from their respective positions. Earlier this week, the Transport Board was barely able to scrape together the funds to pay workers for last month, the source said, adding that management feared that if progress towards reaching middle ground is not made soon, the decision might be out of its hands all together. The source said: “We don’t have a choice but to reach an agreement by March 31 because if there is no agreement with the union, we would have to lay off the people anyway because there would be no money to pay them. You can’t have people working for you if you can’t pay them.” The official said that the workers’ bargaining agent seemed intent on playing hardball although it is aware that job losses are inevitable in the second round of cuts under the IMF-approved Barbados Economic Recovery Transformation (BERT) programme. The source told Barbados TODAY: “The union is not moving and the Transport Board is not moving, and as a result Government has not given a green light in terms of numbers because everyone is playing a cat-and-mouse game. It appears that the union will like the board to continue as is indefinitely but that simply cannot work. “The workers only just got paid for February. Right now, we don’t have the buses on the road, so it is the taxpayers that are paying the workers. “They [BWU] seem to think that the Transport Board holds out its hand to the Ministry of Finance, who then opens the tap and the money comes flowing out.” Noting that time was a luxury that the negotiation process could ill-afford, the source noted: “The curtain is going to come down on March 31 because the budget for next [financial] year does not accommodate 540 people working at the Transport Board. We have to reduce it because we cannot put a burden on the state and taxpayers that is too great for them to bear.” Barbados TODAY made several unsuccessful attempts to reach several senior union officials for comment. It is understood that both entities will again be meeting on Friday, when it is hoped that a deal could be reached on the numbers to go on the breadline. Last November, the Transport Board retrenched 50 of its 600-strong workforce. First to go were those who received permanent appointments just weeks before the May 24 General Election. Then, in December, 50 workers, mainly bus drivers, opted for voluntary separation packages, but those have not yet been finalised. (BT)
DIRTY CLASSROOMS BEFORE LAYOFFS – Long before layoffs in the public service began, schools across Barbados were not being properly cared for. That was revealed by Minister of Labour Colin Jordan, who today said that even when there was a full complement of general workers, schools were still not being thoroughly cleaned. Over 1,000 public servants have already lost their jobs and more job losses are expected as the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme moves into phase three in a few weeks. Yesterday while speaking in Parliament before the Standing Finance Committee, Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw acknowledged that layoffs had affected her ministry’s ability to provide proper maintenance to primary schools across the island. “As a result of the BERT programme we had to remove the general workers from several of the institutions. Currently we are obviously grappling with an issue in terms of human resources within the various school plants,” Bradshaw admitted. However, speaking to the media after a tour of the Barbados Agricultural Development Management Corporation (BADMC), Jordan said based on what his ministry had found when the team went out into the field, some schools had been neglected even before the beginning of Government’s retrenchment exercise. He said simple cleaning procedures such as sweeping, mopping and cobwebbing had not been done. “There are teachers and there are students existing in these spaces, but even before separations from the public service, my ministry’s reports indicate that there were basic cleaning activities that weren’t taking place, so I don’t feel that the separations from the public service would have impacted that which I was specifically referring to. “Those findings pre-date separations from the public service, so that I would have met with officers in my ministry who would have visited schools and this is before the middle of last year, they would have seen situations where there was cobweb that obviously had not been moved in months, there were floors that had not been scrubbed or mopped for a while. It was evident,” the minister said. “That tells me that having full complements of staff does not translate into proper cleaning. And I think the Prime Minister would have hit the nail on the head when she intervened to speak to the whole idea of leadership and I think the issue in schools, which is the issue in many organisations is the matter of leadership, monitoring, follow ups and holding people accountable.” Jordan said it was important for Government to ensure that its services were not compromised as a result of the layoffs. “So while we talk about separations from the public service, we need to make sure that functions do not fall through the cracks,” he maintained. (BT)
‘SIT 11-PLUS, THEN CHOOSE SCHOOLS’ – The process in which high school choices are made before a student sits the common entrance examination ought to be reversed, St George North MP Gline Clarke has suggested. In a bid to prevent numerous transfer requests and minimise the numbers of students commuting from St George to distant rural schools, the backbencher is asking that the examination be taken first and then the school chosen based on the marks earned. He told the House of Assembly: “Do the exam first then choose the schools. That way you chose based on your marks and your community. The common entrance is held in reverse. Once the exam is written parents, students and the ministry would sit down and select the school. If I get below certain marks I go to the school in my zone.” He blamed the current zoning system for putting pressure on the Transport Board which in turn caused students to get to school late on mornings and get home late on evenings. The former transport minister continued: “[Zoning] is causing pressure on the Ministry of Transport and works because they have to ferry children all over the place. It is causing tremendous concern. It is causing problems in the society. You have children getting school at 10 a.m. and getting home at 6 p.m. because they have to traverse from St Lucy to St George to Christ Church. Yes, the education system has helped us, but in these times we need to amend our ways and look at the system.” He argued that the change would stop the numerous requests for transfers the ministry now faces every September. Clarke said: “Parents come in after the exam and ask for transfers. Have you ever asked the question: ‘Why are you asking for transfer?’” They ask for transfers because the child got less marks or more marks. We need to sit down and look at the system. We need fundamental changes to stop parents from coming to ministry demanding: ‘I want a transfer’. You are putting too much strain on the system.” Clarke also recommended curriculum reform, urging more attention be paid to teaching and honing life skills as opposed to the traditional subjects. “We need to have more technical education in the system,” the MP said. “We need to have more skills being taught, rather than teaching like history and the classical subjects.” (BT)
CLOSING THE LOOPHOLE – The Revenue Authority is losing $50 million in Value Added Tax (VAT) returns because it is unable to collect taxes outside of Barbados, senators learned today. Speaking in the Senate today during debate on the Value Added Tax Amendment Bill 2019 Senator Dr Crystal Haynes pointed out that Government was losing a substantial amount of revenue due to BRA’s limitations. The amendment will allow Government to collect VAT on goods and services purchased online from a vendor outside of the island for use here. The legislation also empowers the Government to collect VAT on goods and services purchased online from local vendors for local – even if the transaction is processed outside of Barbados. Senator Haynes told the Upper Chamber: “It has been estimated that we have been losing about $50 million in VAT revenues because the BRA does not have the jurisdiction to operate in terms of tax collection outside of Barbados. So one of the things which this legislation has spoken to is that it makes reference to a tax collecting agent.” She revealed that a proposal had gone out and following applications from several tenders, a company had been selected to act as the Government’s tax collection for these online transactions. Dr Haynes said the technology had been “tried and tested” and was currently being used by 46 US states. But several items purchased online would be exempt from VAT, she told lawmakers. For example, a Barbadian who bought a plane ticket to travel from Barbados would not have to pay the tax, as the service was not being consumed in Barbados, she said. As education had always been a VAT exempt service, it would remain unaffected, and other categories, including pharmaceuticals and hospital supplies, would also be VAT-exempt, she added. Assuring citizens that these new tax collection tentacles would not reach into the pockets of citizens travelling abroad, Senator Haynes said: “This is a tax on online transactions, so I would just like the public to remember that they won’t have to worry that when they travel to New York or travel to see family in England and you use your card that you are going to have this tax applied. It is not a tax on credit cards. It is specifically attached to close the loophole on online transactions.”  (BT)
’SALES TAX INSTEAD OF ONLINE VAT’, URGES DRAKES – Describing the Value Added Tax (VAT) as “regressive”, Opposition Senator Crystal Drakes has suggested that a sales tax on online transactions would be more appropriate. And citing a difficulty in the effective collection of VAT when the supplier is not located in the jurisdiction of taxation, Drakes said it would be much simpler for a sales tax to be applied. Drakes was speaking during debate in Senate this afternoon on the Value Added Tax Amendment Bill 2019, which would empower the Revenue Authority to collect VAT on online purchases from overseas vendors. She told fellow lawmakers in the Upper Chamber: “Even in the EU where they have an economic union, they have difficulties working out these taxation measures, particularly for online services. “So I ask the question again, would it not just be easier to call this a sales tax for administrative purposes, rather than try to tie us in to foreign vendors who now have to register in Barbados? What is that registration process like? And the other issue you have is if that process is not seamless enough, they may just opt not to service the jurisdiction.” The senator called for more discussion as on how the measure is to be implemented. She said she was still unsure how individuals would go about getting tax refunds. Senator Drakes said: “How as a consumer when I ask for a refund but I am not VAT registered, how does that work? I really need someone to flesh out the procedure and the operations of this because I am sure that I am not the only one who is very confused and concerned about this particular measure and the fact that it has the inflationary effect on goods and services, I am hoping that someone on the Government’s side will flesh this out a bit more.” She also raised a concern that the measure was announced in June 2018 and was supposed to start on October 1, but was then pushed back to December 15. The Opposition senator said the delays indicated how complex the measure is. Senator Drakes told fellow lawmakers: “We are now in March 2019 and I can only assume from the outside that there is so much back end work to be done that you couldn’t get it operationalised on October 1. “So even establishing this clearly is a complicated process, complex enough that there were two dates that were missed and the public of Barbados, including myself as the average citizen who uses a lot of online services, would like the Government to have a little more discourse on this matter because there are a lot of questions regarding it”. (BT)
GOVERNMENT ‘TRYING TO SHED PRINTERY JOBS’ – Outspoken trade unionist and Senator Caswell Franklyn has accused Government of moving downsize its official printery through legislation. As the Upper House debated the Interpretation (Amendment) Bill, he claimed that there was a meeting at the Government Printing Department at 3 p.m. on Tuesday during which its staff were given separation option forms. Senator Franklyn told the Chamber: “Civil servants are uneasy. Every day there are being reminded that their jobs are underlined. It is wrong. This is not how we do business in Barbados. When you are going to reorganise a Government department the decent thing to do is talk to the union. Government did not give the people six minutes with the option forms. How can you have laws on the books to tell the private sector how to behave and then ask people to sign off on documents they only had for five minutes? “I am shining the light on Government’s behaviour. These things are not circulated not given with enough discussion. Government is rushing to do everything and doing it badly. These are the people who voted for you. The people who voted for you are now the collateral damage. Labour parties protect labour. Everything this Government has done so far has devasted labour.” He continued: “When you take away a man’s duties and assign them to someone else that is disrespect. This is unfair to the hard working people at Government’s printery. People work through the night to get things done. Instead of following the normal procedure you bring them before Parliament. When I see Government’s hand trying to get rid of civil servants I have to stand up and speak.” But saying she “strongly objected” to his statements, Minister of Information Senator Lucille Moe rose to her feet on three occasions, joined by Senator Lisa Cummins who also interrupted on a point of order. Senator Moe said: “The senator is using the opportunity to malign me imputing improper motives because he is protected by the chamber. These defamatory statements and allegation should not be allowed to continue. I rise to say stop Senator Franklyn from carrying on as if he is in Fairchild Street.”(BT)
ONLINE GAZETTING TO ‘SPEED UP LAWMAKING’ – Proposed changes to the Interpretation Act will speed up the legislative process, Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Public Affairs Senator Lucille Moe has promised, as the Government’s official newspaper heads for cyberspace. The Interpretation (Amendment) Bill is intended to upgrade the manner in which regulations and acts of Parliament are brought into force by  online publishing instead of printing in the Official Gazette. She told the Senate: “It is clear that this methodology that we have found to diminish the amount of time it takes to ensure that something becomes law that can be used in a ready manner. Is a plus to Barbados’ modernisation, it is a plus to our ability to do business, plus it is a plus to Government’s ability to function efficiently. It forestalls all of the waiting and waiting that people encounter because something has not yet be gazetted. “We are moving governance into a modern framework by utilising electronic printing. This gives the public ready access to what Government is doing which allows for greater transparency.” In agreeing with the Government Senator, Deputy President of the Senate Senator Rudolph “Cappy” Greenidge said he saw the move as a change in the right direction. “This young generation, they are not going to look at the printed paper at all,” said Senator Greenidge. “If it is there online I believe from time to time they may very well stumble upon something of extreme importance. I am not advocating that they should do away with the Official Gazette in its printed form forever. We have come to the point where there is a need to broaden the definition of what is meant by publish.” Saying the change would also save the Government money, he added: “Having the Gazette primarily online would be more economical. The move to digital would save Government having to spend busloads of money.”  (BT)
CONSUMERS WARNED: FLOUT THE BAN AND PAY! – Barbadians who fail to comply with the ban on single-use plastics can expect to face stiff penalties when implementation takes effect on April 1st. Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey, who is championing the cause, sounded the warning during a media sensitization workshop at the ministry’s Charnocks, Christ Church headquarters. Humphrey spoke of the coming legislation, to be debated over the next three weeks, which will authorize the imposition of “stiff penalties” for those who violate the environmentally-friendly ban or other environmental laws. The new policy prohibits the use of single-use cups, cutlery, straws, plates, egg trays and styrofoam containers among others. Humphrey promised an aggressive public awareness campaign to better inform Barbadians of the full implications of the ban, after which, he warned that more punitive measures would be instituted. “While I do not wish to say specifically what the penalties are, suffice it to say that these penalties are very stiff,” said Humphrey. He added: “For persons who determine that even though the Government has made a decision that it no longer wishes to engage people supplying single-use plastics, especially in the process of a trade; people who determine that they still want to do it will have to face the penalties.” The minister added that the policy was not intended to be a whip on the backs of Barbadians and expressed hope that society would work hand-in-hand with Government on the critical issue. Humphrey revealed that new legislation would give law enforcement the tools to take a much harsher stance against indiscriminate dumping, littering and even against those who fail to keep their properties up to a certain standard of cleanliness. He also expressed some compassion toward vendors who purchased large amounts of single-use plastic from wholesalers under the impression that they would be allowed to use their remaining stock after the April 1st deadline. “Perhaps we need to have a conversation around how we accommodate them after April 1st . . . because I never wanted to affect people who are on the street trying to make a dollar. It was never my intention to negatively affect them, so perhaps that’s a conversation we’re going to have to have about how best we accommodate them . . . perhaps give them a little more time,” he said. “However the importation [of single use plastics] as of April 1st for wholesale will not be allowed. In fact, for retail purposes it will not be allowed until I come back and say differently.” Humphrey again stressed that Barbadian retailers have already started importing alternative materials to replace the soon to be banned products. He also issued a firm warning to wholesalers and retailers who attempt to exploit consumers by indiscriminately raising their prices. “People who are bringing in these items now have determined perhaps that now there is this immediate market and that because there’s a market due to Government doing the right thing, they have decided to do an evil thing and to raise the prices on people for these products. It will not happen so.” While Humphrey admitted there was very little that could be done to directly stop people from raising their prices, he added: “We will spend so much time and money educating the public as to what these products should cost and to make life difficult for the people who haven’t tried to abide by the rules.” (BT)

AG NOT ALARMED – A United States travel advisory highlighting several of this country’s crime hotspots and which has caused quite a stir on social media, has been dismissed by Attorney General Dale Marshall, as much ado about nothing. The AG explained that the US issues travel advisories for each country as a matter of course, and in fact Barbados still enjoys the USA’s lowest risk assessment. The advisory went viral on social media, but this morning the AG sought to assure Barbadians that the country’s stellar safety record was not in jeopardy. “I have seen the document that has been circulating on social media. The United States issues advisories on every single country in the world and while the term travel advisory connotes some dire warning, it is nothing more than exactly that, a travel advisory. The lowest level of risk is represented by level one and the highest risk is represented by level four, Barbados is in the category of level one. So, we are in the same category as countries like Bermuda, while Jamaica and Trinidad are level two, but more importantly this travel advisory is merely advocating caution. The March 5, 2019 advisory issued on the US Bureau of Consular affairs website urged its citizens not to visit Crab Hill, Ivy, Nelson Street, Wellington Street or Maxwell Coast Road. A local entertainment establishment was also listed on the areas that should be avoided. The notice went onto advise “increased caution” for the St Michael areas of Black Rock, Deacons, Carrington Village, Greenfields, New Orleans and the Pine. Barbados TODAY contacted the US Embassy in Wildey to clarify the rationale for the advisory and the singling out of the above-mentioned areas. Embassy officials promised to respond to queries by tomorrow. However, Marshall contended that the sentiments of the advisory are no different from the cautionary note that he would issue to all Barbadians. “We are becoming alarmed somewhat unnecessarily in this matter. The US issues a travel advisory for every single country in the world. In any country there are going to be places where people would recommend that you do not go. The advisory says to exercise normal precautions in Barbados. It does not say not to go to Barbados nor advise extraordinary precautions. I will also advise Barbadians and residents to exercise normal precautions in Barbados,” he explained, suggesting that he was aware of the issues in the areas mentioned. The AG made it clear that Government’s plans to arrest crime, especially gun violence which accounted for nine of the 14 murders for the year so far, will continue to be rolled out. However, he was adamant that the advisory was not about to escalate the level of urgency. Marshall stressed, “As the Attorney General of Barbados, I will tell you that when someone gets shot and killed it causes me to step up action. The same goes for if somebody is injured or robbed or when firearms come into Barbados. But action is not increased as a result of an advisory from a foreign state.” Within the first month of the year, Barbados had recorded a higher murder rate than that of Trinidad and Tobago. There were eight murders in January which placed the murder rate at 2.8 per 100 thousand, while Trinidad, which has recorded 32 murders for the same period, had a rate of 2.3 per 100 thousand. (BT)
MAGISTRATES’ COURTS OFFICES CLOSED – The offices at the Holetown Magistrates’ Court and the District ‘E’ Magistrates’ Court will be closed today, Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, to facilitate staff training. In addition, the offices at the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court and the Domestic Court District ‘A’ will also be closed for staff training on Friday, March 8. The public is asked to note that the Magistrates will still be sitting during this period. The court offices will reopen to the public on Monday, March 11. Any inconvenience caused is regretted. (BGIS)
‘INTERVENTION NEEDED’ – A 45-year-old man will be assessed at the Psychiatric Hospital over the next three weeks for allegedly following a minor several times to “preach the word”. There were suspicions that Shayne Napolean Carter, of Bank Hall Main Road, St Michael was about to commit the crime of indecent assault when he allegedly loitered on the premises of a woman on March 5. Sergeant St Clair Phillips objected to bail for the accused after he pleaded not guilty to the charge. “Reports are that the accused also targeted other persons on that same day,” said the prosecutor who also revealed that the Carter was an outpatient on the Black Rock, St Michael mental health institution. “He is in need of some intervention. He was apprehended by residents and not the police. Given what is going on in society, we are fearful for his safety and we would not want him to become a statistic,” the prosecutor added. However, in his application for bail Carter stated: “I did not do it. I should go home. Two residents held me.” It was then that the Magistrate Douglas Frederick asked why was it that the accused was suspected for indecent assault. The prosecutor replied: “He was seen by residents following the same girl of a tender age twice. The last time the child’s mother spoke to him and he said he only wanted to speak with the child as he wanted ‘to give her God’s intervention’.” Carter went on to explain his reason for the comment. “I wanted to exchange my number with her to discuss the Word of God over the phone. I am a minister of the Word at the church . . .  in Silver Sands. I was spreading the Word,” a seriously looking Carter stated. However, it was a laughing Carter who asked, “is there a jacuzzi at the hospital”, after he was informed that he would be remanded. “Seriously though I have to go shopping with my wife later as I did not get to go yesterday due to this situation,” Carter stated before he was remanded until March 27.  (BT)
ONE FRAUD ACCUSED BAILED, OTHER REMANDED – Two alleged fraudsters where offered $10,000 bail each today but only one got to go home after the other was unable to find a surety. Hubert Artis Larocque, 29, of Lower Burney, Mapp Hill, St Michael and Alexander Moses Raven, 29, of No 25 George Street, Belleville, St Michael are jointly charged with endeavouring to obtain $19,883.94 from RBC Royal Bank (Barbados) Limited via a cheque drawn on the account of Electric Sales and Service Ltd (ESSL) knowing it to be forged. It is also alleged that Larocque intended to defraud when he gave Raven a forged bill of exchange purporting to be a RBC Royal Bank (Barbados) Limited cheque made payable to him in the sum of $19,883.94 and drawn on the ESSL account while Raven is accused of uttering the forged cheque. The men were not required to plead to the indictable charges, which were allegedly committed on February 21, 2019. There were no objections to bail from the prosecutor Sergeant St Clair Phillips who asked that suitable sureties be produced to the court. Raven was able to post bail and was given a July 24 date to return before Magistrate Douglas Frederick in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court. However, by the end of the day’s sitting Larocque was still unable to make contact with a surety and had to be remanded until April 3. (BT)
NSC REVAMPING SPORTS FACILITIES –The Barbados Lumber Company Centre is the first of several facilities in various communities to be revamped by the National Sports Council [NSC] with assistance from the National Cultural Foundation and construction company Williams Industries. Located at Waterford, St. Michael, the Lumber Company project commenced in early February and is expected to be completed by June this year. Acting director of the NSC, Neil Murrell, explained that work would be done this year on five to ten facilities. However, where the soon to be retrofitted Lumber Company facility was concerned, he added that once finished it would be accessible to persons in the community. “This is the first facility, but we have several other facilities in the pipeline to be executed in this financial year starting in April. We have a number [facilities] that we have identified, but I am not at liberty to let you know before the powers that be,” Murrell said. Despite not being able to disclose the estimated cost for such an undertaking, Murrell quickly pointed out that the sports council did not intend to overspend and said they had so far utilized internal resources to make the project a reality. Additionally, clubs and organizations that utilize the Lumber Company facility were recently informed by the NSC in a meeting that it would be unavailable until the project was completed. “The sports council has a power washer, so we will do that and the cost to paint cannot be in the tens of thousands of dollars. But I wouldn’t be able to pin down a price at this stage because most of that is internal. But so far there has been a regrading of the field to make it level so that activities can take place on a levelled playing field. “It is a four to five-month project which started with the regrading of the area and then we allowed the grass to come through, so that will take four to five months once the rain steps in. There will also be a retrofitting of the pavilion, meaning painting to remove the graffiti, replace the louvres, replace electrical fittings inside, the doors and locks will be changed inside as well. “So, at the end of the four to the five-month period, we would have a total facility which would cater not only to sports but the community where the focus of the sports council in the next couple years will be on integrating young people of the community into sports, education and art. So, the retrofitted community will be able to allow the community to use the centre for homework, dancing and other engagements,” Murrell said. Next door to the Barbados Lumber Company facility is the National Stadium currently undergoing repairs and which is also managed by the NSC management. Work commenced at the start of this year with the removal of the roofs at the 48-year-old stadium and is expected to be completed by year-end according to the Minister of Sports John King. Just last month the VIP section officially named the Louis Lynch stand was on fire. Despite its deplorable state, the facility is still being used to host track and field meets including school sports.  (BT)

BY THE GRACE OF GOD – Centenarian Dorothy Elaine Cumberbatch was the first of ten children, and she is now one of two that are still alive. Today, as she celebrated her 100th birthday with a visit from Governor General Dame Sandra Mason, family and friends, Cumberbatch declared that it was God’s mercy that brought her to this ripened age. The centenarian who is in good health said she was feeling proud with no pain. “I can still make a joke, and still laugh, and have fun,” she said during the celebrations, which took place at her Regency Park, Christ Church home, this morning. The mother of three children, one deceased, said she got married to James in 1945, and he died around 1991. She worked at the popular 5 and 10 department store in The City, in the position as supervisor, before migrating to the United States in 1967, and returned to her land of birth in 1991. Cumberbatch has five grandchildren, and 13 great-grands. The old lady who was born in the Belmont Road, St Michael area, was proud to state that she still attends her St David’s Anglican Church. She said she spends her golden years quietly. “I love reading any paper that I pick up that has writing on it. I used to have a garden, but I don’t have a garden anymore. I like house work, always washing and dusting,” she said. When asked to describe what it was like helping to nurture her nine siblings, Cumberbatch said she had to do it, with assistance from another sister. She recalled that she taught them how to be honest, in addition to warning them to keep their eyes off of other people belongings. “Don’t envy anyone. We used to say grudge in those days. Don’t grudge others for what they have because you don’t know how the parents come by it. So, you be satisfied with what I could provide for you.” Cumberbatch’s ninth sibling is still alive and lives overseas.  (BT)

November One of my goals was to post a story every month, but November sucked balls on a personal and global scale, so I failed. Did work on Yuletide and other fics, just didn’t finish anything, alas.
December Shadowhunters, ever the tears you wept, Alec/Magnus, my take on soulmate fic where one half is immortal Shadowhunters, Armchairs and Paperwork, Alec/Magnus, domestic make-outs on furniture King Arthur (2004), Wild Horses, Bors/Dagonet/Vanora, Dagonet Lives! Other Things I Wrote A weird half fic, half headcanon thing about Alec Following His Heart, Dairy Farmer Level.
So many Dear Author letters for exchanges, I’m always embarrassed about my long-windedness.
Still Stuck In The WIP Folder A treat for Yuletide that I’m only half way in, will probably try and finish it either for NYR, or stalk my recip and see if they request it in another fic exchange to treat them there.
The RomCom I started for Unconvential Courtship, in which Alec and Magnus only get together years later at the Clace Wedding, and need to Fake Date For Political Reasons. Currently at 13k, 5 chapters in, at least 10 to go.
The Cupid AU in which Alec is a cupid who shoots Magnus for someone else in 1700, cue 400 years of pining. 2k in, got boggled down by historical research and magic wordlbuilding.
The Chess Date, sequel to the First Date Fic, 1k so far, but got stuck.
About 5k worth of various outlines and plotideas, including the Phoenix!Alec fic, a bunch of fic ideas for the World Inverted AU, the Izzy and Alec are parabatai fic, more Kate Daniels fusion, and the DragonHeart AU which I plan to co-write with siri.
So much to write and finish!
Overall Thoughts: Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
This year I published more words than in all my other years of fandom combined! Other milestones include: posted over 100k words total to my AO3, posted my first smut (which also was my first PWP), and participated in over 10 challenges. I also think I wrote more this year than I ever did before, but I’m not entirely sure because I didn’t count words for unfinished things in 2015.
Wrote exactly 0 words original work this year, which I didn’t see coming either. Guess the new fandom took it all out of me.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Shadowhunters, the new shiny fandom of my heart. I didn’t expect I’d ever feel about a show like I did about Spartacus, and it’s not completely the same, but fuck I am INVESTED, and I am still super inspired. It’s just a canon with many many hooks for me to grab on to, and I guess I have. Only two more stories to go, and it’s officially the fandom I’ve written most for, never did see that coming.
Did you take any writing risks this year?
I wouldn’t call it risk taking per se, but I did leave my comfort zone and had a bunch of fanfic first times. I wrote Star Wars (which is super intimidating fandom wise for some reason), I actually wrote for a lot of fandoms I hadn’t written for before. I wrote smut and PWP, and I even wrote a fill for a kinkmeme.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year?
Goal for next year is definitely to let my kink flag fly more, and write the things I’d like to see more of. Try my hand at some f/f smut.
I’d really like to keep writing steadily, so I’ve signed up for Get Your Words Out, to keep my output steadily.
I also really want to finish my WIPS, especially the RomCom, because First Chaptered Story if I do.
And I’d like to get back into my Original Work. I actually have a lot of half finished stories and plot outlines lying around, I really want to finish something next year.
On the wishlist is also to participate in NaNoWriMo again next year, but the job might get in the way of that alas.
From my past year of writing, what was...
My favorite story of the year:
Fuck this is hard, because I’m one of those people that writes mostly to still my own hunger, so I tend to really like my own stories (I laugh a lot at my own jokes as well). I guess it would be all that is loved does now glitter, because it gets me right in the id of feelings. It’s the story of myself I’ve reread most. Also, slap fights.
My best story of this year:
I think reeds growing out of my fingertips. I thought if the basic plotline while driving through four european countries at night, and the last image, of the posessed girl diving off the damm was the first thing I came up with. Jukebox is very close to origfic, and I think I really got the creepiness and plot right with this one.
My most popular story of this year:
By hits, kudos, comments and bookmarks all that is loved does now glitter wins by a landslide. I guess because it’s porn with feelings and features Magnus being his magical self.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Sing, Antoninus for the Kubrick Spartacus. I adapted Latin Poetry for this story, yo. I love all things Spartacus, but the Kubrick movie is very precious to me, and I wish more people still felt that way. Alas, there’s not much of a fandom for this movie, so no one thinks of looking up fic for it.
Most fun story to write:
Sometimes I really like cracky fic, and I tend to be the only one who finds myself funny, so probably either the Dairy Farmer Thing, or A Positive Result. The funnest experience was totally working together with Siri and Ray for Podtogether though, nothing beats that.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Alec coming because Magnus’ toe ring scrapes his calf in a little too much could never be enough. Runner up would probably be Alec kissing Magnus’ toe ring in the same story. Magnus and his jewellery is pretty much the sexiest thing in fandom, imo.
Story with single sweetest moment:
If we’re going for sweetest then I’d pick Izzy distracting Alec with fashion choices in Nothing In This World, because all the Sibling Feelings always. If we’re going for sappiest then I’d pick the Beauty & the Beast Library scene from Take My Hand And Close Your Eyes because Magnus being magical with his magical mood lightning and Alec being in awe.
Hardest story to write:
Definitely A Force To Be Reckoned with, because Star Wars is intimidating as fuck to write for if you never have written in that canon before. Plus there was the whole first time smut writing aspect, and the sex with the Force thing, so I struggled a lot. Still super pleased with the end result though.
Easiest story to write: Glitter By The Waterfront practically wrote itself. I just really love writing in the Kate Daniels setting (I wish it took off like Hogwarts AUs, honestly, it's just so fun, and the magic is so awesome), and Alec and Magnus fit so well there. I pretty much wrote it in a day which almost never happens. Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:  Before writing Running Out Of Days, I never really took Ripley's grief for her daughter into account. Or well, I knew she was mourning, but it wasn't part of the emotional impact for me. Writing Amanda as both Ripley's daughter and the Drift Partner she lost really hammered that home for me though, and I now watch Aliens differently.
Favorite Title: all that is loved does now glitter, with miles ahead. I'm just proud of thinking of it, it fits Magnus and the story so well, and it's the only title I ever got a compliment about (and by someone not even into the fandom! although I lured them in by now). I'm just ridiculously fond of it. Favourite Opening Line:  The song of her sisters is sweet and mellow, a brook flowing over pebbles, made round and soft by water and time. (x) Favourite Closing Line: “I don’t need to find them,” he said and kissed Magnus again. “I’m already the happiest I can be. I picked you.” (x)
Favorite Line from Anywhere: Here in this bathroom, while he looks like a disco ball threw up on him, with Magnus standing next to him, looking soft and thoroughly bedded and touching him so tenderly, he truly, finally feels like he belongs. (x)
Fic-writing goals for 2016:
Write a minimum of 75k Post a story every month Finish at least one WIP of over 10k

ITK Newsletter, no. CXI: LUNAR-PICK - Comic Book Reviews on Contagion + Sister Mercy!
Loonies!
Allow me to assault you once again with a fair newsletter for your weekly consumption!
Welcome back to the ITK newsletter which gives you all you need to know for the upcoming episode. This time around, there is of course your usual Moon Knight fare, but things are slightly different this time around as we look towards some creative work done by one of our own Loonies, Corey Hardiman…it’s an independent comic book, ‘Sister Mercy’ which we will ‘review’ (I’m hesitant to ‘review it, as I don’t want to ‘mark’ it) and discuss on the show!
PHASE OF THE MOON: NULL + VOID
LUNAR-PICK REVIEWS - OVERVIEW OF THE CONTAGION SERIES + SISTER MERCY ISSUE #1 by Corey Hardiman
But apart from that, there will be standard Moon Knight goodness with two things of note -
Firstly, we’ll be discussing the recently concluded Contagion event which featured our Fist of Khonshu - and not only was it a fleeting appearance, but Marc actually swung in to save the day! I won’t give much away here as to my thoughts on the series, but needless to say, you’ll want to tune in for this one to gather some…let’s just say, interesting thoughts I had on it all…
Very keen to hear what you thought of it too - I’ve posted up a Spoiler Thread in the FB Group and Page for those who want to drop us a line…we’d love to read out and discuss your thoughts too on the show.
I actually had the honour of guesting also on the Iron Fist podcast, to chat about Contagion too…more on that later down the newsletter in our Collective section…
As you can see, we’ve ignored Khonshu once again with the phases of the Moon…methinks it has to do with the lost Golden Sceptre…remember that? :)
Yes, I’ve not forgotten about our little serial, and you’ll be happy to know that Episode 6 of THE HUNT FOR KHONSHU’S GOLDEN SCEPTRE should drop either this coming episode, or next. I just have to find some time to stitch the episode together, but I have all the material and am keen to keep our serial chugging along!
Aside from the Contagion and Sister Mercy review/discussion on the show, there’s also the ’10 Things you Need to Know about Moon Knight’ initiative that Rebecca and Connor(shu) instigated int heir podcast episode 118 ‘2K Nine-Nine’.
We got heaps of feedback for it, so I’m keen to feature this on the show, however, I’m not really sure what the other High Priests had in mind. Speaking of which, Rebecca will be unavailable this coming episode, and I’m just trying to confirm the availability of young Connor(shu)…what you MIGHT get this coming episode is either a solo from me (which I’d prefer not to, as I’d love to discuss these issues for review with someone else), or a special guest that I may happen to snag.
Just another tiny factor playing into consideration is that my little Khonshu, Finn, has upturned his sleeping pattern and so it’s hard to ascertain when I can actually record. Fear not! I will find a slot somewhere in the day (or night) and be sure to release an ITK episode to keep this show going strong! Only downside is that it’s hard to coordinate co-hosts, as my time availability is at the whim of my 15-month old! :P
I'm even thinking of perhaps taking a short break to record a bunch of pre-recorded shows as an option of keeping the lights on at ITK...I don't know...it's a tricky one, as with pre-recorded shows you can't really do current news or updates...hhhmmmm, I'll have to give it some more thought...
FANTASY COMIC LEAGUE - OCTOBER RESULTS IN!
We have the results for the end of October and geez Louise, call me Mac 'n' Cheese, things are damn well exciting!
It was no surprise that Tommy took out the month with a commanding lead in week three of October, and as seen in the card above, Tommy remains top dog with juuuust under a century to his name. Well done, Tommy! Both The Thing and Miles had a huge month...with ol' Blue eyes in Contagion as well as the various FF books, his points saw him shoot The Man on the Streets up to top billing...
I was fortunate enough to have Cap do very well at the tail end of the month, so I managed to hang onto second place for the second time this season, with a respectable score of 85. I was pretty disappointed with Wolverine's effort and to be honest, I was expecting way more from Iron Fist too, as the weekly Contagion I was sure was going to yield a flurry of points for Danny...but not to be...
This was a clincher! Jason (previous month's leader) scraped into third position this month by one point! Poor Dustin must have been ropable! Still, well done to Jason for again picking a solid draft and making it to third spot. The big standout for Jason was Sue Storm, and I think she'll continue to do well in November, considering her solo title is still going, and she is of course, like The Thing, featured in the numerous FF titles out this month...it truly is a golden era for the FF in comics after a long drought, so expect to see the FF members firing in the FCL...
Cold Case Kurtz comes in at fourth at the end of October, just missing out by a whisker. Doctor Strange seems to have served him well (and I'm pretty sure he'll continue to do so in November) with modest totals from the Hulk and Thor. Dustin has already relinquished She-Hulk for another, so we'l see how his team fares in November...best of luck, Dustin (and Happy Birthday!)
Beloved Loony, The Power of Chad rounds out the division, and for me, the biggest upset here was Venom. With Absolute Carnage in full swing, I would have thought Venom to be cleaning up the points but perhaps with Absolute Carnage wrapping up in November, that may still be the case. Chad really needs more from Doctor Doom...I've not read the title, but with an issue out this month, let's hope for Chad's sake that Victor lays it on thick for his Latverian citizens! Modest totals from Black Panther and Conan provide the meat of Chad's score...again, let's hope there's more activity from T'Challa in both the Avengers book, his solo title and the Agents of Wakanda...! Similarly, Conan has his solo title, potential appearances in the spin off titles, and Savage Avengers...plenty of chances to light up that scoreboard!
So, at the half-way mark of the season, the standings for our Loonies are as follows:
Tommy - 4 points
Rey - 4 points
Jason - 4 points
Dustin - 1 point
Chad - 1 point
It's still anyone's game..if Dustin or Chad dominate in November and December, then they could certainly make a play for the title this season, and walk away with e free trade of their choice...!
In addition to that, Tommy, Jason and myself are in a good position to consolidate and potentially if either of us take out one of the coming months, then it would be hard to beat...
It's all still up for grabs!
I'm hoping to maybe get Brian Bradley and a couple of the Loonies from our division on the show as we get close to the end, to discuss more of the FCL and how things look like panning out...until then, we've got a bit more drafting to do, then it's all systems go!
THE COLLECTIVE, THE SPECTOR-CALL
It's fun being part of The Collective, and in addition to all the podcasts helping each other out...it's fun to listen to them all too! I've been catching up on a few of our colleagues, and as started last week, I'd like to SPECTOR-CALL them out here for your perusal...Give them a go if you're up for alternate things to listen to (but keep listening to us of course! hahaha)
Anyway, here's what's on display at Collective-Mart this week coming....
A shoutout to The Signal of Doom Podcast - Dave is really pumping hard and the Patreon push is in full swing! If you are a listener of the show, please consider being a patron. Dave is recording his first Patreon-exclusive episode and it'll be a review on 'Escape from New York' starring Kurt Russell!! Sounds very cool...
As mentioned earlier in the newsletter, I'll be guesting on the upcoming Sons of the Dragon - An Immortal Iron Fist Podcast, where I chat with host Connor, about Contagion #4 and #5. As I write this it hasn't dropped yet, so I can't give you a link, but it's bound to drop any minute now, so please just check their website for any updates!
CONTACT US!
Again, as mentioned, we'd love to hear your thoughts on Contagion too...I've posted up a Spoiler Thread in the FB Group and Page, so if that makes things easier, please drop your thoughts there...otherwise we have other ways in which you can contact us....
If you DON'T want your comments broadcast, please just add, "(DNB)" at the end of your comment, and we'll be sure not to broadcast it. We'll pick a few comments from here and discuss on the show!

Weekend reading: Can we take back control from Brexit?
[A quick update on Brexit thoughts for those who want to reasonably discuss it. For those who don’t, please feel free to skip to the links.]
Imagine having anticipated something for 30 years, finally getting the freedom to do it, and then making a car crash out of it.
But enough about my life as a mid-life singleton. I’m thinking here of the Eurosceptic wing of the Conservative party.
You know – those 40-odd guys who can’t muster up enough votes to unseat the UK’s most ineffectual leader since Hugh Laurie’s Prince Regent in Blackadder the Third, and yet who’ve somehow managed to send 63 million of us towards an apparently imminent impoverished future.
You might think the World Class farce we’ve endured over the past 30 months would see me smiling.
After all a second referendum is looking ever more likely, if still not odds-on.
But unfortunately, I continue to read and hear abundant evidence that most of the Leave voting contingent still doesn’t get it.
And that means despite the demographic challenges of that faction (i.e. its original margin of victory is literally dying) it’s quite possible Leave could win again.
Especially if the Remain side sticks to the previous policy of dull facts over bus-splattering bullshit fabrications.
No wonder Leave voters seem almost as angry as Remainers:
I’ve seen a parade of #Brexit leaders on news programmes today. Their position boils down to this: We are absolutely sure voters knew exactly what they voted for and, as soon as we manage to agree among ourselves what that was, we will inform voters what it was they voted for.
— Alex Andreou (@sturdyAlex) December 6, 2018
A second referendum is a horrible solution to a stupid problem, with plenty of downsides.
However from my perspective it has the minor virtue of being less terrible than all the other alternatives.
Whose Brexit is it, anyway
Can we not stop this death march? Absolutely no one seems happy with the direction of travel.
Not even the Leave voters, that’s the most galling – if unsurprising – thing.
Blogger Ermine came close to capturing this contradiction at the heart of the Leave vote with a graphic this week. Leavers are represented here by the two Mickey Mouse ears on top of the smug metropolitan elite mug:
What @ermine’s Venn diagram is missing though is the set of people who voted either Leave or Remain to make us poorer.
Perhaps that’s because it doesn’t exist – despite even the Government admitting that’s what we face.
True, a tiny set of Brexiteers have belatedly conceded that a No Deal Brexit will hit us in the national nads.
That, they now say, is a price worth paying for sovereignty / blue passports / the right to negotiate trade deals with Madagascar and Kazakhstan.
But all the leading Leave-supporting players continue to lie to the electorate.
Theresa May herself rounded off her Deal Debate Dodge by harking back to the supposed ability of Brexit to reduce the inequalities and insecurities she spoke of in the aftermath of the vote – despite almost every single analysis of Brexit showing a net negative impact, economically-speaking.1
If you want sovereignty or fewer immigrants from Brexit, fair enough. Own that. Don’t claim the tooth fairy too.
But sadly, the very few Leavers I come across in real-life are still saying things like “The EU needs us more than we need them.”
The same EU that has run rings around us in negotiations.
The EU that has stuck firmly together, despite all forecasts to the contrary, and strangely believes more in its vision of togetherness than in the fantasies of Brexiteers.
The EU that takes 44% of our exports, while we take 8%2 of theirs.
The roughly 450 million of them versus the 63 million of us.
The UK vs the EU is a negotiating position that only looks attractive to Tories of a certain class raised to see greatness in the self-destruction of The Charge Of The Light Brigade.
“C’est magnifique, mais ce n’est pas la guerre; c’est de la folie”.3
Barry Barricades
What I missed when I created Barry Blimp – the archetypal Home Counties Leave voter of not inconsiderable means and more than a few years – was his zealotry.
Because I now see a big chunk of the Leave cohort want Brexit no matter what.
In fact I rather think some would enjoy it if we had ferries piled up outside Dover and food rationing at Tesco.
Obviously I feel vindicated when I think back to the insults hurled at me when I ventured my opinion on my own blog that many Leave voters didn’t know what they’d started, or that this would drag on for years.
But that’s about as satisfying as telling the person in the seat next to you that yes, you were right that the 747’s engine sounded a bit funny as the Captain shouts “Brace, brace!” over the tannoy.
There seems no good solution to this mess now. Revolutions have started over less.
(That may sound melodramatic if you don’t know your history. I suggest you Google the origins of the French Revolution, the English Civil War, or the American War of Independence before you jab your finger in my chest.)
To be clear I’m not predicting revolution – let alone hoping for it, from any perspective – but there’s got to be a non-zero chance.
Currently we are just living through a nationalist coup, and that’s bad enough.
The irony is for many on the right, Jeremy Corbyn is a revolutionary Marxist.
Politics has abandoned the center ground. As a result, lots of people are going to be very unhappy, however this turns out.
Our politicians need to get a grip, fast.

Why is my insurance qoutes so high!?
hey all, I am a 17 year old male, live in cumbria. i realise this is a c rated insurance post code, i understand that. what i do not understand is why when i put in qoutes for the exact same car, exact same details all bar the name, my insurance skyrockets. i get qoutes of 3200 on a corsa 1.0 and the like (small, 1.2 or less cars) whereas friends, even 1 of which lives 5 doors away from me, get qoutes of about 2400. why is this? i understand the post code part, but the thing is all my friends being qouted live in the same area, in the same town, same estate in fact, our first four letters of our postcodes are the same, i thought this was what determined the post code factor. im currently a student, ive put down i have held my license for 4 months, i am the registered owner and keeper of the car, i am the policy holder, even added a parent with 30+ years experience on (which by the way only saved me 100) and i got 3200. my friend on the same street got 2400. why is this? also, can anyone recommend a cheap insurance company, as a young driver? eg. under 19 really, because i know car insurance has almost doubled in like 3 years. no wonder people are illegaly driving with this daylight robbery scam called insurance. thanks""

ok so i was driving my brothers car and i have my g1 i went to money mart and back home about an hour later police came knocking on my door asking if my brother was in a car accident so we went down to the station and the officer asked if i was driving his car i said yes , he then said that the other man that was sitting in the station got my plates and said i hit his car and cracked his bumper (very minor crack) so i said no and then officer assumed i was lying and made me write up an accident report. after when i was leaving the station the other guy asked if we could solving this without going through insurance so we exchanged numbers (their was no damage at all to my brothers car & no paint or anything on their car to prove i hit it) the next day they called and said the want a whole new bumper they dont want it patched up and they would get me a price quote they then got me a quote for $1475 for a while new bumper from ford i told them im not paying that much the only way im replacing the bumper is if my mechanic does it he said ok so i went to my mechanic told him the whole situation and he said i shouldnt be replacing the whole bumper for somthing that small but he still ordered the bumper for me i had to put a $400 down payment for the bumper and $300 after its put on. the bumper came in 2 days later and they brought their car for it to be put on when we got there they got pissed off and said this isnt a bumper straight from ford and they dont want it and left ( the bumper was brand new for the same model car and had the exact paint coat match just that it wasnt from ford) they then call me threating to take it through insurance if we dont get it from ford so i lost the $400 down payment for the bumper because they cant return it after its painted so i told my mechanic to order it from ford. but when he called for they said the dont have bumpers for that model anymore, i then call the people back and told them to take it through insurance because my mechanic cant get that bumper. So what will happen to my brothers insurance hes under 25 with his g2, and i had my g1 but it was on private property where they said the incident occurred the officer even said he cant charged me because its private property PLEASE HELP!""

How to get Health Insurance when you are 17?
My parents are divorced and my sister and I have been living with our mom. However, we received health insurance through our father's place of work. Now he is applying for disability and has quit his job, so currently my sister and I have no health insurance. Because of this, my mom forbids me to take my car or motorcycle out because if my sister or I get hurt, there is no way for us to pay for it (we are suffering financially because my mom's hours at work got cut, and she is still recovering from breast cancer). Anyway, is there any way for me to obtain health insurance (or at least help my mom to) that would be affordable? We live in New York State""

Insurance coverage question?
I was involved in a three car accident, the car that started it came in to main street and got hit by one car, consequently he lost control of his car went across the next lane and hit me. His insurance already told me they are taking liability and will pay both drivers' damages, but he said that California minimum liability is only $5000, so they are planning to divide the $5000 to cover both drivers. However the damage in my car and the other guy's car exceeds $5000. I thought the limit if indeed is $5000 it should be $5000 for each driver and not for both. What do you think? Maybe they're just giving my the short end of the stick or twisting things for their convenience. Anybody knows for sure how it should work?""

Is fully comprehensive insurance worth paying on a 1000 car?
I'm a 39 year old driver who's had a full licence since the age of 17, I have full no claims and although I've been involved in 2 accidents neither of them were my fault (fingers crossed I'm not to speak too soon). I'm only buying a car worth 1000 and the difference in cost between fully comp and 3rd party, fire & theft makes it worth thinking about going for the latter as the fully comp is 609 with 250 excess and TPFT 480 with 250 excess. Does anyone know, if I was involved in an accident cause by a 3rd party driver can I claim from their insurance? I remember on my 2nd accident (about 14 years ago before the recent technology) although I got all the details of the registration and the driver he gave me incorrect details and the DVLA never actually found him as the car had been in between owners. However I was put in contact with a type of agency who assist in these cases and I got reimbursed for my car and neither did it affect my insurance. How am I covered 3rd party if I have an accident that's the fault of the 3rd party? Logically I'm thinking that I can claim for my car from their insurance? Cop Didn't ask for proof of insurance or registration.?
So i got pulled over for going 28 over the speed limit haha..... It was on a highway and the speed limit was 55 i was going 83 ..... Im from florida and my car and license are all registered in florida but im in georgia right now living with a friend trying to attend college (except i cant find a job cause the worlds slowly dieing lol) But anyways so i get pulled over by this state patrol narcotics douche bag who mind you has no teeth to begin with and in my mind either his mom beat his teeth out of his head or hes a recovering crack head who had lost all of his teeth over the years. Either way he pulls me over and says You were going 83 on a 55 , may i see your license I give him my license he goes back in the car and yeh i was thinking he didnt ask for my proof of insurance or registraion. I would think that he would considering im from out of state. **** Im gonna rant on how this narcotics officer frisked me my question will be at the bottom lol***** So yeh he comes back to the car after running my license and tells me to get out of the car..... I was at this point like .... Ok? So i get out go to the back and he says I asked you to get out cause i see your eyes are red I told him ummm it could be the fact that im allergic to dust and pollen and im driving with the windows down, i rub my eyes cause they itch thusly they get irritated. So i said either its that or the fact that i just got no sleep from the night before and drove my friend up to north carolina. And he then proceeded to ask if he could search my car. Im a month from being 20 and never got pulled over before and ofcourse i said yeh w.e. I smoke cigarettes and when he went to go search my car he comes out freaking out. IS THERE ANY DRUGS IN THE CAR OR ALCOHOL i was like no.... and hes like WELL IF I FIND ONE SEED OF MARIJUANA YOUR GETTING LOCKED UP AND CHARGED 1,100$ ... i was like ok go ahead i dont have anything so thusly he didnt find anything cause i didnt have anything . He finds a vitamin water bottle that wasnt even mine it was my friends girlfriends and he smelt it and said there was alcohol in it...... i was tempted to call him a lunatic and a retard but didnt and just said uhh no thats just vitamin water, so he threw it out and then i went on my marry way with a court date and a crazy speed limit infraction lol. ******* heres the question **** Is it mandatory for a cop to ask for proof of insurance and registration or does it even matter? Christmas in Paris....
•*•*• 30th December 2017 •*•*•
23rd December
Our flight was at 7am, so we arrived at the airport two hours early. It took that whole time, which was grating, but it had to be done. When we had to get a train from Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, it was  €20.60 for the two of us, which isn’t that expensive, but it had to be in change, which we weren’t expecting. I was happy to see tram stops named after Ella Fitzgerald and Rosa Parks!
We stayed in Hotel Home Moderne, which was lovely. The bedroom and bathroom were a good size, but the shower cubicle was tiny. The  €12 per person breakfast, which I’d paid for in advance, was just continental (pastries, bread, cereal, cheese, coffee, etc.) and an omelette was the only cooked option, being  €5 extra. It was okay, but I’d hoped for a little more variety on the cooked side, as a “cheese and ham” omelette was a “cheese omelette with cold ham underneath it”. The reception team were always friendly and helpful, so that was nice.
We had planned to go to Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (then quick visit round Notre Dame) after leaving our suitcase at the hotel, but an hour delay with our flight and massive queue for train tickets at the airport meant we didn’t have time. So, we skipped ahead to the Louvre, after finding an SD memory card for the camera (I’d forgotten it and realised when we were on the way to the airport!).
We got into the Louvre for free because we are “18-25 year old residents of the European Economic Area (EU, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein)” and had the ID to prove it. Cameras where allowed, which surprised me a little. We saw the Mona Lisa through a crowd ;) The architecture was incredible and just seeing the different exhibits was awesome.
We ate in a tiny restaurant called L’Avant Premiere. It was a bit of a tight squeeze, but the food was good and the staff were friendly.  €50 covered two dinners, desserts and drinks. Squish was rather surprised when there was only a urinal in the men’s room :P no pooping allowed ;)
Unfortunately, upon getting back to the hotel, we realised that only one of our Euro plug adaptors was the right type, so a big issue over the trip was sharing it. My charger was temperamental anyway, unfortunately, so my phone would be plugged in for hours and either only go up a little (the electrical flow was unreliable) or go down! Squish had to charge his phone and vape, so it was quite stressful to work out a time share with the adaptor, giving us both enough charge on things.
24th December (Christmas Eve!)
We had rough travel routes planned, so we didn’t have to “waste” time deciding on the day, so we headed to the Arc de Triomphe to get cool pictures. We only stayed there for about 30 - 45 minutes, as we just wanted to walk around it, see it up close and then go to the Eiffel Tower. I bought a couple of postcards at a small shed-like stall there. We saw our first ever double-decker train during our stay in Paris and I’m fairly sure it was the one that took us to AdT.
After we finished there, we went to the Eiffel Tower. It cost approximately  €38 for two tickets to walk up the 669 steps(!) and then get a lift to the summit, where you can’t go by stairs. We shared a large doughnut on the first floor and got tap water, as the bottled drinks were  €5 each! We thought it was funny that the gift shop sold “want to see the tower?” condoms next to the pens, magnets, keyrings, etc. :P They did have a couple of cool things to buy, but I was worried about overspending early - not in terms of running out of money, but on buying gifts that were fairly pricey on our second day, then finding something I preferred elsewhere. I do wish I’d bought one of the mugs, though.
My knees struggled with the steps on the way up, but I’m glad we walked it - it was an achievement for both of us. 669 STEPS, PEOPLE! :P Actually kind of proud of myself :)
Once we finished at the Eiffel Tower, it was about 4pm. The last river cruise departure (from the Eiffel Tower) was at 5:30pm. We were quite hungry, but we didn’t want to miss the pre-booked Bateaux Parisien river cruise and do it another day, so we decided to go on the 4:30 one. When we were about to go to the ticket booth, I realised that our printed tickets were in the hotel safe and we’d forgotten to put them in the bag. Luckily, Squish remembered to check the email for electronic barcodes. It worked and we waited for the next cruise.
When planning this, we’d wondered whether to do it in the daylight or night time, but we ended up getting about half of each, as the cruise was an hour and it got dark midway through. We sat on the top deck, to take pictures. Unfortunately, our camera batteries died on the first day, as they’d been in there a while. The spare set drained extremely quickly, though, so we had to turn it off after every picture.
As a side note, it was probably on this day that we realised just how many people wandered the trains for money and the likelihood of being ambushed by the crazy number of street sellers.
25th December (Christmas Day!)
We weren’t sure what would be open on Christmas Day, so I booked Disneyland Paris. Squish was more into going than I was, but it sounded like a good idea, after he suggested it months ago. I’d kept the secret for a few months. A wonderful moment happened the night before, but he didn’t remember.
I’ll get the negative out the way first; it wasn’t what we’d expected, with the hype surrounding it. We thought there would be more rides for teens/adults to enjoy and we’d thought the parks itself would be bigger. Anyway, the overall atmosphere was amazing and magical, as there were Christmas decorations all over the park and the design of the buildings are amazing. Hyperspace Mountain (Star Wars) was the best ride we went on.
In terms of souvenirs, most shops had more or less the same items in them, but it was still fun to look in them all. For Christmas prezzies, I bought my brother an Indiana Jones top (from the ride we went on) and I bought my dad an “I hate mornings” Grumpy (the Dwarf) mug. As all of the spending money was technically “mine”, I had to encourage Squish to buy himself a Stitch mug, as a souvenir. I bought a Mickey Mouse with the Eiffel Tower keyring and an Olaf (Frozen) glass/cup.
It was worth going to for the experience, but we’d anticipated more, so Squish had asked to go early and we were there for 11 hours, when 7 - 9 would have been plenty. We did have a good time together, though. The Christmas tree light-up show was interesting :P
26th December (Boxing Day)
As we’d missed it on the first day, we headed to Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. I’d seen pictures online and it looked incredible, with a suspension bridge, Temple de la Sibylle, man-made waterfall and a lake. I knew it was going to be hilly, based on the reviews, but I didn’t realise how steep the hills were and how difficult the main attraction area would be to find. It turns out, there was a flatter entrance that was on the “doorstep” of the lake, temple, etc., but the route from our hotel hadn’t taken us that way. We got some great photos, though, and we were glad we went.
We ate at a nearby restaurant - I had a burger (no surprise) and Squish had beef bourguignon. We chose that place mostly because I was desperate for the toilet and we were both fairly hungry. We went to a large shopping centre, after that, hoping to find souvenirs for my mum and nan. Unfortunately, we didn’t find any because it was more for the locals, than tourists. That said, I did spot a cool wind chime with 7 mineral stones for the Chakras, so I bought that for our house.
27th December
We got to the airport 5 hours early, as I’d let Squish sleep in (after another lovely middle-of-the-night moment) and we’d missed the hotel breakfast. We had considered going somewhere else first, but had pretty much explored what we’d hoped to and it would have been a bit late, as check out had to be by 12pm and dragging our suitcase would have been annoying.
On our way to the airport, I slipped down several concrete steps at a train station. I had a little scrape on my left arm, my hand was sore from gripping the railing and my upper left thigh hurt. A Parisian man helped me up, which was nice. I cried on the train, though. I wasn’t comforted by Squish (he didn’t know how to?), which was disappointing, but that’s another story.
Anyway, once at the airport, we went to McDonald’s for brunch. We met a French man who was doing a lot of travelling and had just come back from Guadeloupe and waiting for a night flight to Madagascar, where he planned to stay for a long time. He was interesting to talk to, though a bit blunt and crude for what I’m used to! ;)
After eating, we were heading to the toilet when I checked the board for our flight.... CANCELLED. It felt like a dream. I hadn’t prepared for it and wasn’t sure what to do in that situation. As soon as I pointed it out to Squish, his stress levels intensified, as we both had work on 29th and didn’t want to rush a flight and his return train to uni the next day.
We went to the toilet, then to EasyJet customer service. We were one of the first to notice, with only a couple of families in front of us, asking about the same flight. It rippled through the waiting line that no flights would be going to Luton, Gatwick or Stansted for two days. EasyJet offered to pay hotel and food for the extra days, but we couldn’t miss work. I had to get a loan from my parents to pay £412 for Eurostar tickets, then spent extra to get us from London to my hometown. We got home that night, though, so it was the better plan.
Overall
There were some rocky mood swings that were hard to keep up with, but I honestly had a lovely time with someone I care deeply about. We had a great time exploring Paris and going on an adventure we’d talked about for a while. If I hadn’t booked it when I did, before everything got more complicated, I doubt we’d have ever gone on this trip, which would have been unfortunate. We deserved to go on a break and this was a pretty good one. It was most definitely worth it and I’m glad he’s expressed the same.

How the Iconic Wipeout Series Was Born
From Playstation Blog USA
“It’s only really many years later when you have the benefit of hindsight that you look at the idea, the art direction, the soundtrack, the platform… and it’s all just perfect timing. Those moments don’t come along very often.” – Nick Burcombe, co-creator, WipEout (1995)
WipEout hit 1995 with the force of an earthquake. Its sci-fi vision of armed anti-grav craft battling it out at 1,2000kph for gold and glory on twisting, vertigo-inducing race tracks couldn’t have been further removed from the quintessentially English pub in which it was conceived. Yet it felt perfectly in sync with the world it roared into like a supercharged sci-fi colossus.
Birthed in Liverpool, England and deployed on PS One’s bleeding edge tech, WipEout dropped into the eye of a raging cultural storm that was gripping the United Kingdom. Yet while it embodied the zeitgeist of ‘Cool Britannia’ – a celebration of the country’s beautiful collision of movies, music, art, club culture – its impact wasn’t restricted by geography. Cool Britannia’s epicentre was the British Isles. WipEout’s was anywhere a PlayStation was hooked up to a TV.
How the Future of Racing Started in an English Pub
WipEout was the child of a concept pitch and a vivid memory. The two met in a pub just outside Liverpool in the early ’90s, introduced by a pair of Psygnosis developers – designer Nick Burcombe and artist Jim Bowers. The drinking establishment was a regular haunt for studio staff of which Bowers and Burcombe were two. They’d regularly meet and bounce ideas of each other.
Years earlier, Bowers had created a concept movie of two wedged ships dogfighting along a race track, firing missiles at one another before soaring round a huge loop.
He’d showed it to Burcombe, who recalled the footage when regaling Bowers with a story of how he’d overcome a particularly difficult race in Super Mario Kart by turning the TV’s volume off and cranking up a trance track (‘Age of Love’ by Age of Love) on his hi-fi.
“I had a zen moment were everything flowed perfectly,” remembers Burcombe. That sense of exhilaration as the music reached its peak as he crossed the finish line “was the moment I knew I wanted to make a game that did that to you.”
He envisioned doing the same to Bowers’ concept, setting the piece to a Liam Howlett cover of surf track ‘Wipe Out’ that broke out into the Prodigy’s ‘No Good’.
“I think that was the moment we could both see immediately what the game could be,” Nick says. “Even if it was in our slightly sozzled minds’ eye.”
The concept was gold. But there were two other key elements that helped turn the concept into reality.
How the CD-ROM and the Movie Hackers Made WipEout a Reality
In the early ’90s Psygnosis was making inroads in two key areas. Alongside researching CD-ROM technology on the belief it’d soon be the next big shift in the industry, its Advanced Technology Group art team were getting to grips with 3D modelling. The result was a pair of arcade shooters, Microcosm and Novastorm (the latter, designed from scratch by Burcombe, offered a heavier emphasis on sci-fi).
Unbeknownst to Psygnosis, Sony’s PlayStation console would also use the technology. Impressed by the studio’s output, Sony would soon buy the studio outright and put it to work creating a game for its debut games machine.
At the same time, Sony Pictures approached the studio to create a gameplay sequence for a scene in its movie Hackers. Bowers and Burcombe saw their chance to solidify the idea born from their recent pub conversation. A tight deadline meant there couldn’t be any fat, and the pair raced to refine their initial idea. Burcombe focused on vertigo-inducing track design while Bowers added pop-up walls that could be shot to access new sections of the level.
Their work paid off. So impressed by the concept, when the studio took delivery of its first PSone development kits, Burcombe was put in charge of creating its debut title. “I think [my boss John White] and Jimmy knew I had something in my head that I wanted to get out,” Nick theorises.
Tracks, Setting, and the Feel of Anti-grav
Initial focus was on perfecting track design. Trackside details, the game’s overall tone and theme were secondary.
“I was much more concerned with the length of straight, steepness of elevation, frequency of undulations and the tightness or camber of chicanes and corners,” says Burcombe.
The designer also had a clear idea about the weapons pilots could use during the races, stating that everything initially designed made it into the final game.
The 2052 setting was picked because of its relative proximity to the modern day. Close enough to relate to (“it should still be recognisable. An arbitrary date – like 3231AD – would mean nothing to me”) but still offer a tantalising glimpse into future tech such as anti-gravity, which would be the cornerstone of WipEout’s feel.
“For some bizarre reason, I’d use vocal sound effects to really emphasise the weight of something or the inertia and drift,” recalls Burcombe of trying to convey the feeling of anti-grav to the rest of the team. “So I’d have to say it is a testament to the programming team who actually understood what I was trying to achieve.”
How the Iconic Soundtrack Emerged
You can’t talk WipEout without discussing its soundtrack. At a time when licenced music was a rarity in the industry, it was a combination of Sony’s extra marketing heft – specifically tapping into Sony’s music label – and an early demo of the game that secured the title’s first artist. Burcombe headed to London to meet Phil and Paul Hartnol – better known as dance outfit Orbital.
“We got talking about [the demo we showed them] and they were really enthused.They took us down to the studio to play me a track they had called P.ET.R.O.L. After some remixing and reworking – this track actually ended up on the disc. I think once that contact had been made, it was easier to get some others.”
Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers soon followed, and the game’s success greenlit further collaborations in sequels with the likes of FSOL, Fluke, Underworld, Prodigy, Photek and more. “It was a who’s who of the ’90s dance scene,” Nick says as he runs down the artist list.
Restarting the Project and Finishing the Game
Yet despite discussing the initial concept at length and fine-tuning it before full production began, creating a fully textured, real-time 3D game proved challenging, to the point that at one stage, the team had to restart the entire project, rethinking its approach to its production and programming pipeline.
“There was a moment when Ken Kutaragi came to the Liverpool studio and left believing we couldn’t make our launch dates,” Nick reveals. “But that was like a red rag to a bull for a team that had already worked very hard on it. The final few months of WipEout’s development was extraordinary, and I think being there for the European launch was a monumental achievement.”
“Looking back on it now, if it was just reverse psychology – it worked,” Burcombe admits.
Even when discussion shifts to the game’s launch, and acknowledgment of the fact that WipEout was on every early adopters’ wishlist come the PS One launch night at the studio’s local HMV, in typical developer fashion Burcombe mainly remembers the less enthusiastic critical responses.
“We were reading the 7s more than the 9s and nodding about the things that could be improved. It really focused our attention on what we needed to achieve for a sequel.”
After celebrating its success the team rolled up its sleeves and immediately started work on the next entry: WipEout 2097.
The Price of WipEout 2097
In the original game, weapons were deployed only to slow the competition down, give you time to overtake. In 1997 follow-up WipEout 2097, the studio introduced ship energy bars, meaning competitor – and player – ships could be destroyed if you didn’t recharge via trackside pit lanes. It added a new layer of strategy to races; WipEout’s version of F1 tyre changes mid-race.
Ships would now scrape up against walls, sparks flying, rather than coming to abrupt halt. While the original’s difficulty had its fans – including XDev’s John McLaughlin (“This is also why it is loved so much,” he says. “Once mastered you become one with the handling model, zipping through tracks, bounding over boost pads”) – the team wanted to make a more rewarding experience.
But the development turnaround proved creatively tough. Coming directly off finishing the original, the studio now had just less than eight months to develop and release the sequel. Despite 2097 bettering the original in every way, some of the original staff needed a break. As a third game went into production, Burcombe became a bystander to the franchise’s future. Nick eventually left Psygnosis – or Studio Liverpool as it was rebranded – to form his own independent label, PlayRise, and work on mobile turned console racer, Table Top Racing.
“I was able to stand back and watch as WipEout 3 launched, then Fusion on PS2 and then the PSP, PS3 and PS Vita versions.” But he remains upbeat about seeing the series continue without him. “Watching it evolve from afar has been great and I know so many of the people who have worked on all these different versions – improving and building on it each time.”
“I think it’s one of those games that actually conveys something of the team in it. It is a game with a soul and I think people get that,” Burcombe concludes. “The ideas, the graphic design, the music and the PlayStation all combined to make it perfect for that moment in time.”
The Origin of WipEout Omega Collection
“It’s a unique game; there’s nothing else like it. It defined a generation.” – John McLaughlin, XDev, Omega Collection
December 2016, Anaheim, California. A packed auditorium’s roars are only emboldened as the tease of a bass-heavy electronica track kicking in merges with stunning HD visuals to confirm WipEout is returning. The Omega Collection couples PS3’s fan favorite tag-team of WipEout HD and Fury to PS Vita’s WipEout 2048 for an upgraded, remastered package on PlayStation 4.
It’s a welcome surprise for fans. For John XDev’s McLaughlin – one of those lifelong franchise fans and brainchild behind WipEout’s rebirth – “it seemed a simple and obvious choice” to bring the series back.
Though he admits it couldn’t be his decision alone, he made sure he was in the best possible position when pitching the idea.
“I managed to pry [WipEout HD’s] codebase from IT and got it over to Hustle Kings developer EPOS”. Together with CEO and programmer Staffan, McLaughlin worked out how they could conceivably make a PS4 remaster happen and worked up a timeline for development. To achieve it, they’d have to reach out to Clever Beans studio (When Vikings Attack) to partner with. The pitch worked. WipEout was on its way back.
The original plan, according to McLaughlin, was just to work on the HD/Fury package. “But very early on in development we looked at the 2048 code,” he explains. The PS Vita launch title is the most recent entry into the franchise, but its fiction provided a glimpse into an earlier era of the Anti-Grav Racing League. “We thought it would be great to bring all of the tracks and ships from that game too.”
Artwork was reworked, details added. SFX was totally remastered. Split-screen was coded in – a first for the previously handheld only 2048 – and a couple of nods to the classic era added (“we set about bringing back a couple of defunct teams from yesteryear and brought back Tigron and Van Uber teams.”).
And today, some months short of WipEout’s 21st anniversary, the futuristic racing franchise is reborn on PS4.
Back in 1995 there wasn’t anything like WipEout. In 2017, there still isn’t.
Your favorite race track from the franchise…
While Burcombe has the very first WipEout track, Altima VII, as a highlight (“I purposely put it first so you get that “wow” moment from the rollercoaster style downhill section”), it’s pipped by the game’s later course Arridos.
“It has a brilliant flow to it,” he remembers. “There’s some insane airborne shortcutting and great air-brake drift corners too. I also love that it looks carved into the landscape; the location seems plausible.”
For McLaughlin, it’s a pair of Sols – Sol2 from HD and Sol from 2048 – that are closest to his heart. “I love being thousands of feet in the air, zipping along at 1200KPH knowing I can fall off the edge at any moment. Real seat of your pants stuff!”
Your favorite WipEout team…
Maybe because it’s the default team come the ship selection menu of every WipEout, but both Burcombe and McLaughlin favour the Federal European Institute of Science and Research, better known under their acronym, FEISAR.
Though McLaughlin “has some affection” for Triakis, Burcombe points out the story behind FEISAR’s naming may be why it’s his only choice.
“It was a bit of a political joke. The UK had just signed the Maastricht Treaty in ’92 and it was a sort of prediction on where the UK and EU might be heading.”
Your favorite music track…
Despite not making its WipEout debut until 1997 sequel 2097, Prodigy and dance classic Firestarter is what immediately comes to mind for both men.
“It’s embedded in everyone’s brain,” Burcombe sums up simply. “Even though the version in [WipEout 2097] is the instrumental, it’s so engrained in the UK psyche, your mind just fills in Liam’s incredible vocal without even thinking about it.”
Your favorite piece of fan appreciation…
Much as WipEout is a unique melting pot of near-future techand killer tracks, so too is fan love spread across mediums, styles and disciplines. Burcombe points to seeing WipEout tattoos (“it blows my mind that its influence is strong, they felt the need to etch it into their skin forever”) but also that he “still gets regular emails” from fans thanking him for getting them into PlayStation, dance music or becoming DJs themselves. For McLaughlin though, a homage to the in-fiction ships wins out. “I simply love this model.”
